  • Major oil marketers give update on fuel supply

Major oil marketers give update on fuel supply

The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) says the distribution of petroleum motor spirit, commonly known as petrol, has begun from depots to filling stations in Lagos and other states.

Mr Clement Isong, speaking to NAN in Lagos, said this amid the ongoing fuel scarcity in the Lagos metropolis.

Isong said that depots were already receiving petrol supplies from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Trading Ltd., and would continue to do so throughout the weekend.

He emphasised the importance of addressing these issues promptly and transparently to provide clarity to the public.

Isong acknowledged the low stock during the Easter period for some MEMAN members, resulting from inadequate replenishment at depots.

This, he noted, caused outages in retail outlets during the past week.

Isong assured the public that supplies had resumed, with MEMAN members working diligently to expedite the distribution process.

According to him, this include extending hours and weekends at depots, to ensure adequate stocking of retail outlets.

“There was low stock over the Easter weekend for some MEMAN members resulting from truckout to supply stations without replenishment at our depots.

“This has led to outages in some retail outlets during the past week. Moving forward, we want to assure the public that supplies have resumed and all MEMAN members are collaborating closely to expedite the distribution process.

“Members are working tirelessly at our depots, including extended hours and weekends, to ensure that retail outlets are adequately stocked.

“Our collective goal is to eliminate fuel queues and stabilise the supply chain before the upcoming Sallah holidays next week,” he assured.

However, a correspondent, who monitored the situation, reports a resurgence of fuel queues in Lagos as supply diminishes.

Motorists across filling stations in various parts of the state, including Ikorodu Road, Bridge, Anthony, Mayland, Oyingbo, Ogba, Ikeja, Alausa, Oba Akran, Surulere, and Victoria Island, experienced long queues of vehicles.

At the Total Filling Station on Mobalaji Bank Anthony in Ikeja, fuel queues stretched for several kilometers, leading to traffic congestion.

On the bustling Ikorodu Road, the presence of fuel racketeers selling in jerrycans indicated a shortage in supply.

The majority of NNPC filling stations with petrol also had long queues of vehicles, attributed to its lower retail price compared to others.

NNPC retail stations sell at N568 per litre, while other major and independent marketers sell at over N600 per litre.

Moreover, independent filling stations, with a larger share of outlets, have been out of stock for several months.

A marketer who preferred anonymity said that there had been a shortage in supply from the importers of the last resort.

The marketer said that the scarcity was also caused by the delay in the outstanding payment by NNPC Trading Ltd. to international traders.

  • Why we’re strategic in impounding commercial vehicles – LASTMA

Why we’re strategic in impounding commercial vehicles – LASTMA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it impounds commercial vehicles sometimes outside the area where their drivers commit offences as a matter of strategy.

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA Mr Adebayo Taofiq, said this in an interview with NAN on Tuesday, in Lagos.

He said that the belief that commercial buses were ignored many times when committing offences was wrong, as the authorities had strategies to bring them to book.

“The fact remains that at the point few of them are committing these traffic infractions, as noticed by private car owners, they’re not apprehended, does not mean that we don’t have any plan of impounding them.

“For example, if you have a commercial bus coming from like Mile 12 going to Onipanu, if it commits any traffic infraction in Ketu, we have to be strategic if we want to arrest and impound a commercial bus, unlike the car owners.

“They don’t care for their vehicle to be arrested, they even get rid of anything ahead of them just to escape with their bus.

“In such case, our officers have to use their discretion in order not to cause any havoc.

“We use the new system that government gave us, which is the CMS camera, which is the traffic management device, and at times, officers use their phones to capture them,” he said.

Taofiq said that by the time such vehicles are captured while on transit by LASTMA officers ahead, due to the vehicle features taken and forwarded to be looked out for, passengers in the vehicle would not be aware of the driver’s offence.

He urged the public, especially passengers, to understand such situation and not believe such drivers were innocent.

“We see some passengers coming down from the bus and descending on our officers and some of them have been harmed and beaten up in the process.

“The passengers claim that the bus driver had not done anything without them having prior notice that the driver had committed an infraction previously.

“We just don’t pounce on these persons, an infraction had already been committed and we will not continue to tolerate these abuses on our officers, ” he said.

He, however, urged LASTMA officers to apply their discretion wisely in such instances, so that the passengers on board would not suffer unduly.

Taofiq said that discretionary measures could be to ensure that passengers are refunded their transport fares or even taken to the nearest bus stop so as to get buses to their destination.

“Using our discretion is part of training given to LASTMA officers to ensure safety of passengers which is paramount.

“Once a vehicle contravenes any section of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, such vehicle stands to be contravened and be in a position for LASTMA to impound it,” he said.

He said that traffic infractions by commercial buses had to be checked by LASTMA officers.

He urged the public to disregard insinuation in some quarters that LASTMA officers only concentrate on private cars, noting that there was no basic truth in that.

Taofiq said that since the new Area Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare, assumed office on Nov. 20, 2023, there had been a lot of training and retraining of officers for them to be more prudent, civil and be empathetic on the road.

“Equally, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa has been of immense help towards having a new face of LASTMA,” he said.

  • Things very tough, but … — Sanwo-Olu

    Things very tough, but … — Sanwo-Olu

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State says things are presently very tough in the country, but it is no time for blame game.

Sanwo-Olu said this at the 25th State House Ramadan Tafseer Anniversary Prayer, held at the State House Mosque Complex, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday.

The theme of the lecture is: “Allah Will Not Change The Way Of A People, Until They Change What Is In Their Hearts”.

Things are presently very tough, no doubt, but this is the time to come together, proffer solutions and not to blame the government,” Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said.

He charged Nigerians on being patriotic and loyal to the cause of a greater nation.

The governor emphasised increased love among Nigerians and patriotism to the country as part of solutions to the nation’s socio-economic challenges.

He acknowledged that global recession which was not limited to Nigeria, necessitated the current hardships being faced.

Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to return to the way of life where Africans were charitable towards one another.

He stated that it was disheartening that Nigerians no longer lived a communal way of life but now imbibed other people’s culture.

The governor stressed on the need for Nigerians to return to the real African style of living were it took the whole village to raise a child.

Similarly, former Commissioner for Ministry of Home Affairs, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, also enjoined Nigerians to take advantage of the Holy Month of Ramadan to pray more for the country.

He charged them to pray that the country becomes great for the betterment of all.

According to Obanikoro, Nigerians claim to believe in God but their words and ways do not match their deeds to a reasonable extent.

“What we are taught in religion is to do unto others what we want others to do unto us.”

He, therefore, advised the people to love one another and not act in ways that would be detrimental to their fellow human beings.

Obanikoro urged Nigerians to support the government both at the state and federal levels in their quest to lift Nigeria from the current socio-economic downturn.

On his part, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Olanrewaju Layode, said that the Tasfeer, which started 25 years ago, was to bring people together to proffer solutions and pray for the prosperity of the nation.

Speaking on the present economic challenges, Layode implored the people not to castigate one another, especially government but to share good ideas on how to develop the country.

“Let us follow the teachings of Quran as there are a lot of solutions in it.

“Also, l urge Muslims and non-Muslims alike to always pray for their leaders,” he said.
