  • FG confirms three cases of Monkeypox in Bayelsa, declares Lagos virus free

The Federal Government on Monday confirmed three fresh cases of Monkeypox virus insisting that all cases from Lagos tested negative.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole said the three suspected samples of the virus sent to Senegal for testing, have been confirmed.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the samples were sent to the World Health Orgaisation, WHO’s laboratory in Dakar, the Senegalese capital.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that minister had earlier announced on October 11 that the Centre for Disease Control had taken samples for laboratory analysis at the Redeemed University in Ede, Osun State, and in Senegal.

In his words: “As of October 13, 2017, there were 17 SUSPECTED cases reported from Yenagoa LGA in Bayelsa State.

“We have received laboratory confirmation for Monkeypox virus from three of these cases from the WHO Regional Laboratory in Dakar, Senegal. Samples from 12 other cases from Bayelsa were negative.

“With these results, four suspected Monkeypox outbreak in Yenagoa have been confirmed with laboratory evidence. The most likely source of infection is a primary zoonotic transmission, from an animal, with secondary person-to-person transmission.

“Since our initial announcement, a total of 43 other SUSPECTED cases have been reported from eight other States (Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ekiti, Lagos, Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and FCT). Of these, four cases from Lagos have also been tested and confirmed to be negative for the Monkeypox virus.

“We expect that many of these cases being reported from other states in Nigeria are not caused by the Monkeypox virus, but we will continue to investigate all those cases that fit the case definition.

“Further laboratory tests using whole genome sequencing are being carried out by the Africa Centre for Genomics and Infectious Diseases in Redeemers University Ede, Ogun State.”

  • Lagos celebrates Fela’s 79th Posthumous birthday, unveils ‘Liberation stature’

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Sunday unveiled an effigy tagged ‘Liberation Statue’ erected at Allen Roundabout in Ikeja in honour of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony Governor Ambode described Fela as an enigmatic artiste who used the platform of his art to agitate for social and human rights by challenging government and people to explore development through social and economic activities that are rooted in African values.

The governor who said the unveiling of the effigy was as part of activities marking his 79th posthumous birthday and the 20th anniversary of his demise added that aside challenging people to free their minds of all inhibitions and actualise their true potentials, the late music icon also voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege, and took up his saxophone as a weapon to fight for the liberation of the people from neo-colonialism and bad governance.

Stressing that the spirit of Fela was still alive as a movement of social consciousness and justice against oppression, the Governor said the late legend made the world sit up and take notice of the energy of African art and music, adding that he will forever be accorded his position in the global hall of fame of artistes.

According to him, “The phenomenon that the world knows as “Fela” was deeply rooted in the evolution of Lagos State. The story of music, art, entertainment and tourism in Lagos and Nigeria cannot be told without an eloquent mention of the “Abami eda”.

On this day, October 15th, which would have been Fela’s 79th birthday, the government and people of Lagos State celebrate ‘’Fela’’ with the unveiling of this Liberation Statue. It has been 20 years since he passed on but the memories he left us with remain evergreen. Today we celebrate a man who voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege, and took up his saxophone as a weapon to fight for the liberation of our people from neo-colonialism and bad governance.

This “Liberation” statue is not an image of Fela but a symbol of Fela’s philosophy. This artwork was created as a form of respect and remembrance to this legend; what he stood for and fought for with his music; his mythology; struggle for freedom; fight for human dignity; social consciousness; courage and Pan-Africanism.”

He said though Fela was no more, but it was gratifying that he is still alive in his music and in the music of Femi, Seun and other artistes who have followed his style of music, assuring that the unveiled statue would be the first of many to celebrate the Afrobeat icon.

Responding on behalf of the family, Fela’s daughter, Yeni Kuti commended Governor Ambode and the artist for coming up with such a monument to recognize and honour their father in a big way, saying that it was a good representation of their late patriarch.

  • PHOTOS: Army launches ‘Operation Crocodile Smile II’ in Lagos

The Nigerian Army on Friday said the increase in crimes in coastal areas of the country compelled it to step up training and operations in the amphibious environment.

PHOTOS: Army launches ‘Operation Crocodile Smile II’ in Lagos

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, said this at Takwa Bay Island in Lagos State when he launched “Exercise Crocodile Smile II.”

According to him, the ‘Order of Battle’ 2016 provides for the amphibious battalion in the island to keep the coastal area of Lagos State safe.

He said “a detachment of Nigerian Army has since been stationed on the island; more army presence will also be felt soon on the island and other parts of the country in line with the 2016 Order of Battle as fund becomes available.”

The army chief recalled that the first phase of the exercise which took place between August and September 2016 in Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Imo and Rivers states recorded tremendous success.

He said it degraded activities of militants and illegal oil bunkering, destruction of kidnappers’ den and rescue of kidnapped victims, destruction of cultists’ camps, among others.

Buratai, however, said the success of Exercise Crocodile Smile I in those states pushed some criminal elements to other parts of the country, thus necessitating “readjustment” of area of operation of the second phase in 2017.

He added that it was in that regard that the exercise was being conducted in the South-South and South West regions.

He noted that it was being done with sister agencies to sharpen troops’ combat skills on land and amphibious environment and consolidate on gains achieved in the first phase.

  • [Video] Two masquerades arrested for robbery in Lagos

The police in Lagos State have arrested two masquerades in their costumes in Elere, in the Agege area of the state.

The Acting Commissioner of Police in the state, Edgal Imohimi, in a video that trended on the Internet on Wednesday, accused the masqueraders and their handlers of harassing and robbing the residents of the area.

He said the residents made distress calls to the police that some hoodlums were harassing and dispossessing some of them of their valuables, prompting him to call the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Elere division to effect the arrest of the masqueraders and others involved in the alleged crime.

Edgal, in the video, said the masqueraders and others were arrested about 4pm on Tuesday.

“He said, “When I received the complaint against the masqueraders, I called the DPO and some decoy teams were sent to the area and the masquerades and their handlers were all arrested.

“They were only using the masqueraders as a trick to rob some residents of the area. The masqueraders don’t have the permission of any traditional ruler in the community to come out. There is no festival that they are celebrating. Traditionally, masqueraders don’t just come out without a purpose.

“We have warned repeatedly that people without purpose parading themselves as masqueraders on the streets of Lagos will no longer be tolerated.”

Edgal warned that any masquerader who came out without permission would be arrested.

“These ones will be de-robed and charged to court,” he added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, while commenting on the video, said the masquerades were robbing motorists and causing breach of the peace.

He said they would be charged to court after investigation.

He said, “The CP got a distress call that some hoodlums were fighting and almost caused the breakdown of law and order. Operatives of the command were mobilised to the scene, where we saw the masquerades intimidating and robbing passersby and motorists.

“They engaged the police in a fight and we had to call for reinforcement.

“All of them were picked up. They are about seven in number, including their leader.”

  • How Navy uncovered hotel used as ‘base of kidnappers, oil vandals’ in Lagos

    • Policeman, seven other suspects arrested

The operatives of the Nigerian Navy (NN) attached to the Operation Awatse in Lagos on Wednesday uncovered a Lagos hotel where Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was siphoned from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline.

The operatives led by the AWATSE’s Maritime Component Commanding Officer, Commander Chris Akokota also arrested eight suspects including a Police Inspector at the premises, Glonik Hotel situated at 31, Social Club Road, Abule Egba, Lagos.

The suspects arrested were Insp Lukeman Rabiu of the Lagos Police Command X-Squad Unit, the receptionist Gladys Daniel, the waitress Rachael Oludara (22), housekeeper, Adegoke Adetunji (20), tanker driver Waliu Teller (41) Oluwaseun Oguntoyin (20), Victor Vincent (19) and Bobola Kuti (28).

It was gathered that three 33,000 litres tankers were loaded overnight, two left while the third one with registration number EPE367XE developed technical problems and was abandoned at an improvised loading bay beside the hotel.

At the time of visitation alongside some naval officers, there were two other empty tankers on the street while pieces of broken bottles, chattered windscreens, hose and fuel-laden jerry cans were in the hotel. Also, clips used to grip hose on pumping machines were seen in room 209 which was said to have been occupied by another policeman who fled.

A woman believed to have been abducted was said to be found tied up in a room inside the hotel. She was rescued by the operatives.

Policemen attached to Ijaye division also responded to a distress call from the scene which almost led to a rivalry between the security operatives.

The receptionist, Rachel Egbede, told NAN that she started working at the hotel after the previous workers were sacked three weeks ago.

“I observed that some men gather here by 10pm every night claiming they came for a meeting and whenever I challenge them, my manager usually tell me to let them be,” she said.

“Most times I see policemen with them so I never suspected anything until today that I started hearing gunshots in the middle of the night before we were all rounded up.”

Waliu Tella, the arrested tanker driver, told NAN that he brought his vehicle to the location after he was promised N500,000 per trip.

Five tankers and two tanker heads were packed at the scene.

When contacted, Olarinde Famous-Cole, spokesman of the Lagos state police command, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

  • Lagos accounts for over 90 percent of Nigeria’s forex inflows – Finance Commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade has said the state controls over 90 percent of foreign exchange inflows into the country.

Ashade said this in a presentation made to capital market stakeholders in Lagos titled: ‘Funding Lagos State Government’s Economic Agenda through Debt Capital Market’.

The finance commissioner noted that with over 23 million residents, the state is now the most populous city in Africa.

Ashade described the city as Africa’s fastest growing market and the fifth largest economy on the continent, contributing over 30 percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.

“Lagos State accounts for over 90 percent of Nigeria’s forex inflows,” he stated.

He added, “We have explosive increase in population at five percent per annum; 123,000 people migrate to Lagos daily.

“Current demand for trips in Lagos metropolitan area by all modes (including walking) is approximately 18 million per day, with over seven million public transport passenger trips per day.

“The rapid increase in population and standard of living is forecasted to bring the daily demand for trips to approximately 30 million per day by 2020.”

According to him, 10,000 metric tonnes of waste are generated daily in the state, and the state is by far the largest consumer of power in Nigeria as the Ikeja and Eko distribution zones alone account for over 50 percent of the total electricity consumption in the country.

On the immediate financing need of the state, he said Lagos’ 2017 budget had N500bn ($1.6bn) as capital expenditure.

The commissioner explained, “Infrastructure needs analysis shows that over $30bn will be required to achieve the 30 most impactful projects over the next five years (an average of $6bn per annum).”

  • Former PDP House of Reps candidate defects to APC in Lagos

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart in Agege area of Lagos, Mr Raheem Oyeniyi, on Tuesday defected to All Progressives Congress (APC), citing Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s sterling performance as a reason.

Oyeniyi gave notice of his defection in a letter to the APC ward chairman in Orile-Agege area on Tuesday.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Oyeniyi was PDP House of Representatives candidate for Agege constituency in the 2015 general elections.

In the letter titled “Letter of Intention to Return to All Progressives Congress’’, Oyeniyi said that he considered APC as a platform to actualise his dreams for the people.

“I write to inform you of my intention to return to APC henceforth.

“My intention to return is borne out of the belief that the APC today is by far more democratic inclined.

“APC offers the forum of which I can actualise my desire and the aspirations of my people for a better Nigeria,’’ he said.

Oyeniyi said he was a founding member of APC in 2013 but left the party due to internal wrangling and defected to PDP.

“I have always been a progressive since the days of Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Congress (AC) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

“I have contributed in no small measure to the progress of these parties and invariably of my constituency, financially, morally and otherwise.

“I hope that you will use your good office in facilitating the necessary documentation to the effect,’’ Oyeniyi said.

NAN reports that the defector copied the Chairmen of APC in Orile-Agege, Agege, Lagos, National Headquarters, and all stakeholders including Sen. Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the Party.

Several PDP stalwarts, including seven out of eight Lagos State lawmakers elected under the platform of PDP in 2015, have defected to APC.

  • Awolowo statue: Piece of artwork, not photograph – LASG

The Lagos State Government has clarified the ongoing insinuations and diverse interpretations given to the recently unveiled new Awolowo statue claiming that it is a piece of artwork expressing the artist’s impression of the late Sage and not a photograph, adding that it can be subjected to several interpretation.

This clarification was made by Mrs. Adebimpe Akinsola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, who stated that many sculptures had been made to illustrate the other essence of the late sage, particularly the ones that portray him as a ‘dogged fighter’ standing with his popular victory sign, but the new bust, depicting him in an entirely new mode, simply alludes to his multi dimensional standing.

“The reality is that Chief Awolowo was a colossus who cannot be stereotyped. Stereotyping such a highly intriguing personality only exposes the lack of depth of the totality of what the late sage represents,’’ she said.

She stated further that great men all over the World, such as Abraham Lincoln, whose statue was sculpted by Daniel Chester French (1850–1931) and carved by the Piccirilli Brother, had been depicted in a sitting position.

She said that rather than concentrating more on the artistic depiction of the Awolowo bust, what should be considered is the desire of the State Government to inspire the unborn generations about his legacies, adding that immortalizing our heroes was surely one way of spurring present and future generation of Nigerians to effectively connect with our past with a view to committing them to the vision and ideals of our founding fathers.

The Special Adviser explained that the state government unveiled the new statue to celebrate the late sage who has a larger than life image, and whose shoes till date have yet to be filled.

Further reacting to the controversy, the Special Adviser posited that the late sage had become an institution, whose legacies should not be allowed to die, as such it should be daily celebrated to serve as inspiration to the unborn generation, which was why the Lagos State Government, unveiled this new statue in line with the policy of the current administration to immortalize and accord reference to personalities, heroes and heroines who have contributed to the development of the State in particular and the country in general.

She listed such heroes and heroines that had also been recognised and celebrated by the State government as late Chief M.K.O Abiola, Prof. Ayodele Awojobi, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Late Kudirat Abiola, among others.

“Chief Obafemi Awolowo is one of the nation’s nationalists, in which the Lagos State Government believes in his ideologies, policies and programme and as such will consider nothing too much to propagate his ideologies,’’ she said.

Meanwhile, the Awolowo family have applauded the statue and commended the Lagos State Government for the honour done to the family.

Mr. Segun Awolowo (Jnr), in his reaction declared: “I love the statue and I think Hamza (the Sculptor) did justice to his memory.

“As for the large boot, I believe the symbolism is that his shoes are still too big to fill after all this while,’’ he said.

Similarly, Wale Adebanwi, Director African Study Centre, Rhodes Professor of Race Relations, African Studies Centre, Oxford University said, “As an Awo Scholar, particularly one who has written about the politics of Awo statues, I find the statue unveiled by the Governor and his statement during the unveiling very significant.

“In an age in which most of our key players pay lip service to Awo’s ideals as well as the symbolism around his life and service, it is refreshing to find someone in such a critical position as the Governor who not only exemplifies Awo’s commitment to public good, but also recognizes the value of symbolic memory”.
