  • Abducted Lagos school pupils back soon, says Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has assured parents and guardians of the kidnapped Lagos school kids of their safe return.

Osinbajo made the statement while speaking to journalists at the sideline of 60th birthday thanksgiving service of Pastor Salami Ololade in Lagos that the Federal Government was collaborating with the state’s authorities to ensure their safe return.

On May 25, six boys of Model College, Igbonla, Epe, were abducted by gunmen. In the same school, six staff members and four students were kidnapped in October 2016.

The acting president acknowledged that the parents must be going through trauma over the abduction of the children, but said “there should be no doubt at all about the commitment of government in the matter.

“I don’t know how many times the governor has spoken to me about this and the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police, the DSS and even the Armed Forces.

“I am sure these children will return as quickly as possible; so, we look forward to their return,’’ he said.

Osinbajo advised children on holidays to learn something new outside academics, saying “because it is a long holiday, it is a great time to do something new.

“Those who like to learn a skill, whatever skill that may be, should learn it. I wished that when I was growing up I learned even carpentry’’.

He said children could learn something new that would impact on their lives and their communities in new fields of technology.

  • Early morning downpour floods roads, homes in Lagos

An early morning downpour on Saturday in Lagos brought untold hardships to residents of Surulere, and parts of Lekki and Ajah, as some roads and household valuables were submerged in flood.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the torrential rainfall which started around 5:00am in parts of the metropolis left many roads and neighbourhoods flooded.

The flood water also swept some debris in its path, causing some drains and drainage channels to become blocked.

The flooding was noticeable after the rain in areas like Iyana-Ejigbo, NNPC Junction, Ejigbo, Lawanson, Surulere, Isolo Road Junction, Mushin, and at the foot of the Iganmu Interchange, on the Lagos/Badagry expressway.

Miss Mercy Eneli, a resident of Masha, in the Surulere Local Government Area, told the NAN that her entire street was flooded, while some residents watched helplessly as their household items floated in water.

Mr. Nelson Eta, who lives at Lawanson, also told NAN that the level of flooding at Ikate in the Itire area was above the knee.

“I walked from Lawanson to Masha and everywhere was absolutely flooded; people were scooping water and no one was really interested or talking about the election.

“My uncle’s house was also flooded, including the dogs’ shelter, which we have never witnessed before.

“We hope the in-coming council chairman and his councillors will work to resolve the drainage problems in this area,’’ he said.

NAN also observed that some residents of the flood-prone parts of Surulere were more concerned with the task of salvaging some of their submerged valuables, as some of the cars parked on the streets were affected, except those on elevated platforms.

At Lekki, a resident, Mrs. Comfort Wilson, told NAN that “although there is flooding in the area, it is not as serious as that of about two weeks ago, when canoes had to be deployed in some roads to help residents move around.

NAN further reports that the rain delayed the congregation of voters at the various polling units for the 2017 council polls in Lagos State, where accreditation and voting were scheduled to commence simultaneously at 8:00am.

  • Why Lagos LG election was delayed – LASIEC

Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Ayotunde Phillips, has attributed the delayed take off of the voting process in Saturday’s council polls in some parts of the state to heavy downpour.

Speaking with newsmen while monitoring some polling units in Yaba area of the state, she said the downpour affected the movements of electoral materials.

She appealed to those who were yet to vote on the affected area to exercise patience as the commission was addressing the situation.

The chairman assured that all eligible voters would vote, as materials were being deployed to the affected areas.

Philips said the commission would allow some people to vote beyond the 3 pm deadline if there was the need to do so.

“The delay in the delivery of materials in some areas, hence voting, is caused by the heavy downpour.

“However, we are addressing the situation and we are assuring that everybody in the affected areas will vote.

“Once people have been accredited and are on queue, they will be allowed to vote even after 3pm,” she said.

She expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct in most areas.

Phillips said there were few incidences of violence in some areas but said security agents had quelled the situation.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) correspondent who went with the LASIEC boss on the monitoring reports that that the turnout was low in some areas visited.

At polling unit 028,ward G in Yaba, out of the 644 registered voters, only 82 had voted as of 1pm of the visit.

The polling clerk in the unit, Mrs Mosunmola Taiwo, said the downpour contributed to the slow takeoff and low participation.

She, however, expressed hope more people would turn out for the exercise before 3pm deadline.

The situation was however different at polling unit 004 in the same ward as the Presiding Officer, Mr Bishi Usman said the turnout was impressive.

“The exercise is going on fine. People are coming out. I have exhausted the first booklet; I am on the second voting booklet. It is so far, so good,” he said.

  • Lagos LG election: Police deploy sniffer dogs, helicopters, urge electorate to be law abiding

A minimum of three helicopters, dozens of sniffer dogs, anti-bomb experts and thousands of armed policemen are being deployed around Lagos State today as residents go to the polls to elect chairmen and councilors for the 20 local government area and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

Complementing the police to keep trouble makers in check are soldiers drawn from the army, navy and the air force.

The navy and marine police will be keeping an eye on the waterways and coastal areas while army and police personnel will patrol the highways and other strategic areas.

The Commanding Officer of the 9th Brigade -Gen. Adiku Attu and his NNS BEECROFT counterpart, Commodore Maurice Eno, said Friday ahead of the election that every necessary arrangement had been made to ensure maximum security all through the election period.

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni held a separate security meeting with heads of other agencies including the military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), urging them to perfect all security arrangements.

He warned against the use of firearms near polling units by stakeholders, likening such action to a suicide mission. Owoseni gave the warning while candidates and party leaders signed an undertaking towards a violence-free exercise.

He said: “If you want to commit suicide, come out with your firearms. We have profiled you and have taken your biometrics. We have also interfaced with you personally and we will tell you what to expect from us.

“During this election, we don’t want political thuggery like we have witnessed in certain elections from different camps.”

He said some people have already been arrested by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba.

He warned politicians against sponsoring thugs, saying “If any of the hoodlums are traced back to you, it will jeopardise your chances. Talk to your supporters not to be overzealous because we will not hesitate to write an intelligence report to your party and the government.”

Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Ayotunde Phillips pledged a level playing ground for all the parties and asked them not to cast aspersion on the integrity of the commission.

“The Commission shall remain committed to its responsibilities of conducting free, fair and credible elections into the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas,” she told reporters at the Sabo, Yaba, headquarters of LASIEC on Friday.

She added: “Nobody, therefore, has any cause to entertain any fear or doubt on the neutrality of the Commission as an electoral umpire at the Local Government level of Lagos State. We are very much aware of our responsibilities as provided for in the relevant enabling laws.”

She said the Commission had, by Friday, deployed non-sensitive materials to the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas of the State so that “Electoral Officers have adequate time to distribute the materials to locations where they would be used for tomorrow’s (today’s) elections.

“Deployment of sensitive materials to the various Local Government and Local Council Development Areas of the State has also commenced this morning (yesterday) and will be completed in due course. With the early deployment of the materials, I am confident that the elections would be conducted without any hitch whatsoever.

“Accreditation and voting will take place simultaneously between 8.00 and 3.00pm. I want to reiterate that the results of the Chairmanship elections will be declared at the collation centre in each of the Local Governments or Local Council Development Areas while the results for Councillorship elections will be declared at each of the Ward collation centres.

“The only condition that may warrant the declaration of the results outside the collation centres is if it is discovered that the environment is not safe and conducive.”

She appealed to the media to be fair, objective and patriotic in their reportage of the elections.

“As patriotic citizens you owe the nation and the Lagos State the duty of performing your reportorial duties in a most responsible and patriotic manner, devoid of narrow self-centredness that could cast doubt on the electoral process and plunge the state into crises. I need not remind you that pen is mightier than the sword. As holders of the pen, you must be circumspect in the way you use it so that the remaining part of the electoral process can be peaceful and hitch-free,” she said.

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni, who was also at the briefing, said media are the most important unit that would determine the success of the poll.

He appealed to journalists to verify issue before sharing it on social media. This, he said, will go a long way to mitigate the effects of misinformation.

According to him, the police have opened an Investigative Desk to handle cases of crisis during the elections, urging people to call 08063299264 or 08033040870 to report such.

Owoseni warned those who have stockpile ammunitions to surrender them before midnight as police will deal decisively with anyone found with ammunition.

He enjoined the politicians not to sponsor hooligans during the poll, vowing to prosecute them and the hoodlums if caught.

Chairman, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), retired Justice Ayodele Phillips, says Saturday’s councillorship results would be declared at ward collation centres, while results for the chairmanship would be declared at the local government collation centres.

“The only condition that may warrant the declaration of the results outside of the collation centres is if it is discovered that the environment is not safe,” she said at a news conference in Lagos on Friday.

“I wish to reiterate that the commission will provide a level playing field for all political parties and their candidates.

“The commission shall remain committed to its responsibilities of conducting free, fair and credible elections.

“Nobody, therefore, has any cause to entertain any fear or doubt on the neutrality of the commission as an electoral umpire at the local government level of the state.

“We are very much aware of our responsibilities as provided for in the relevant enabling laws”, she added.

Phillips confirmed that LASIEC had already moved all non-sensitive electoral materials to the 20 Local Government Areas and 37Local Council Development Areas.

Philips reiterated that the restriction of movement from 7am to 3pm was to ensure order and impressive participation in the polls.
