  • Kidnappers of four Lagos pupils demand N1bn

Kidnappers of six pupils of Igbonla Model College, Epe, Lagos State, have contacted some parents of the victims, demanding N1bn ransom to release them.

According to Punch, the parents were contacted yesterday and allowed to briefly speak with their children. While two of them were asked to pay N400m each, another two were told to raise N100m per child.

They were reportedly told to meet with the school authorities and the state government to raise the money.

However, details of ransoms demanded from the remaining parents had yet to be ascertained by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report.

The gunmen had gained entry into the school premises at about 6am on Thursday through the creek at the back of the college and headed for the boys’ hostel after breaking the school fence.

They broke the hostel doors, seized 10 senior secondary school pupils and led them to the shore where their boat was parked.

After profiling their family backgrounds, four pupils were released, while the assailants whisked away the remaining six pupils identified as Peter Jonah, Isiaq Rahmon, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf.

It was reported that the gunmen had written the school authorities three days before the incident, informing them of the attack.

They made good their threat in the dawn after policemen and soldiers, who repelled an attack around 8pm on Wednesday, left the school.

In the wake of the abduction, parents and guardians thronged the college to pick their children and wards, blaming the incident on the poor security in the school.

Some parents of the abducted schoolchildren, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers called between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday.

A parent said, “They allowed me to speak with my son. I asked him if he was fine and he said yes. They asked me to meet with the school authorities to raise N400m for my child to be released.”

Another parent of one of the pupils said they begged the kidnappers that they had only menial jobs when they demanded the same amount.

“I said N400m was much, but one of them told me not to worry myself. He said I should meet with the school authorities and the government. I was also allowed to speak with my child. I spoke with two other parents and they said they were asked to pay N100m each,” the parent said.

When contacted on the telephone, the school Vice Principal, Academic, who did not disclose his name, said, “I’m sorry. I cannot volunteer information for you. I’m not permitted to speak to you. Thank you.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the police had yet to be informed about the ransoms, adding that investigations were ongoing.

Meanwhile, a resident of Epe, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said security had also been beefed up around the college, following a clash between the security agents and the suspects.

He explained that the clash forced some residents of Ode village, a riverine community in Ogun State which shares border with Epe, to desert the area.

  • Police inspector, two others killed in Lagos carnival [Photos]

A police inspector and two siblings have lost their lives during a masquerade festival at Ilagbo community, in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State.

According to the state police boss, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, who paid a visit to the communityt, the clash started at a masquerade festival between two youths from different communities. Some youths from Oriyanrin town were alleged to have caused trouble at the festival and the elders of Ilagbo community sent them away.

Out of anger, the Oriyanrin youths who were sent away allegedly laid ambush on some Ilagbo youths who were returning from the festival and hacked one Ismaela to death.

The late Ismaela’ s brother identified as Matanle, who went to evacuate the body of his brother was also hacked to death by the Oriyanrin youths, which angered Ilagbo youths to attack Oriyanrin community at night, burning houses, vehicles and other property worth millions of naira.

A resident, Mr. Moriu Made, described the incident as unfortunate. He said: “Because of my ill health, I could not run when the youths from Ilagbo invaded our community.

“They burnt my house and my younger brother’s house. Some other residents’ houses were also torched. I don’t know where to start from. I also don’t know where my family members fled to. I am the only person left in the community and I have not eaten for three days.”

A 102-year-old man was also seen left in the deserted community. Owoseni, however, warned the residents against communal clashes during a visit to the community.

“We will make sure there is no reprisal attacks in the community but you the traditional heads need to do something except if you are not capable. The elders in this community should be ashamed of themselves. The police helped you to settle clashes but you went ahead to kill an inspector.

“If you are not careful, we will accuse you of using policemen and your community members for rituals and this will discourage investors from investing in your community. Nothing stops you from organizing vigilance groups with the police.

“Instead, your children went behind to kill policemen. Policemen also have families. You know the solution but if you don’t want peace to reign, we will handle it with force,” he warned.Meanwhile, two persons have been arrested over the carnage.

  • Aviation unions cripple NAHCO operations in Lagos

Aviation unions cripple NAHCO operations in Lagos

The unions in the aviation sector on Monday grounded operations at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Plc for several hours over staff welfare issues.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the aggrieved workers staged a rally at the headquarters of the ground handling company at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, temporarily halting operations at the office.

The workers, who carried placards with various inscriptions, accused the company’s management of not negotiating with their unions on the salary increment granted them and being insensitive to their welfare issues.

Mr Olayinka Abioye, General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), told newsmen that the amount approved as increment for the workers was far below what the unions had demanded.

Abioye said, “the workers demanded for 40 per cent salary increase, but the management after the approval from the Board of Directors went ahead to increase their salaries to between seven and 10 per cent without recourse to their unions.”

He alleged that there had not been salary increase in the ground handling company in the past three years, while hundreds of the workers had not been promoted in nine years.

Abioye also debunked the claim that the management had increased workers salaries by 15 per cent for junior staff, eight per cent for middle cadre staff and three per cent for management staff.

He said: “Under the labour practice, the management and the unions ought to have sat together to negotiate what would be the new take home pay of NAHCO staff, but they didn’t do that.

” The management only called the in-house union to inform them that a certain percentage had been approved for them as salary increase.

“These workers have been so pauperised as there was no promotion of hundreds of these workers in the past nine years.

“What was announced was between seven and 10 per cent, which angered the workers because the management never negotiated with the unions before coming out with the salary scale.”

Abioye also accused the company of engaging in casualisation of workers against the labour law.

Mr Tayo Ajakaye, the spokesman of NAHCO, told newsmen that the issues raised by the workers and the unions would be addressed by the management.

He explained that the management would continue to negotiate with the unions and the workers for the benefit of all.” (NAN)

  • Lagosians defy rain to make Eyo festival a grand success

Lagosians defy rain to make Eyo festival a grand success

Lagosians in their thousands on Saturday defied the early morning downpour but trooped out to welcome their own “Adamu Orisa’ popularly called Eyo festival.

The festival is part of the activities to celebrate Lagos @50 marking 50 years after Lagos State was created from the old Western Region on May 27, 1967 by the then Military head of state, general Yakubu Gowon.

He appointed Brig.-Gen. Mobolaji Johnson as the first military governor of Lagos State.

The residents who did not open shops described the rainfall as a sign that the gods of the land were pleased with the celebrations and with the present administration of Lagos state led by Gov. Akinwumi Ambode.

It is also a sign of peace that greeted the popular Eyo festival and our masqueraders as we used the cultural festival to commemorate Lagos @ 50, they said.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that rainfall during “Eyo” masqueraders’ parades was a sign that the heavenly beings or the gods were at peace with the land.

NAN also observed that the masqueraders in their immacualte white regalia and accompanying palm frond and caps to match danced round Lagos island in the downpour that had been drenched and stained from red mud and erosions from floodings.

Mr Jacob Kehinde, an indigene of “Eko’ the Yoruba name for Lagos city, said that the array of white regalia and costumes was a true replica of the culture and traditions of the indigenes of Lagos Island.

From left: National Leader, All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu and Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode at the occasion

According to him, the festival was a theatrical display and pageantry that highlights and showcases the rich indigenous history of the people and Lagos city.

“Every thing done in this festival is showcasing what we have as a people and what our culture entails.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde

“Lagos is a tourist attraction centre and we must use this medium to showcase sites while we celebrate Lagos as a state,’’ he said.

Also, Mr Taofeek Adebisi, a freelance journalist, advised Africans and the general public to seek knowledge rather than attributing Eyo festival to a fetish practice.

“I was born and breed as a Muslim on the mainland of Lagos and over the years I have been made to believe that Eyo masquerade dance is diabolic.

“On the contrary, it is not true because I have been going around town with the guys dancing since 10p.m. on Friday night and I have not seen anyone pouring libations to any deity.

“Eyo is all about fun and nothing else, but, pure fun,’’ he said.

The Festival which started several decades ago was invented as part of the regalia for the purpose of wading off undesirable elements.

From the beginning, the festival depicted by the image of masqueraders in flowing white apparel has grown for a rural festival to an internationally acclaimed event, he said.

  • Stay off Lagos roads permanently, Ambode orders VIO officials

Stay off Lagos roads permanently, Ambode orders VIO officials

…Warns FRSC officials to stay only on fringes of highways

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Tuesday ordered the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) to stay off Lagos roads permanently therefore dispelling earlier information that the officials (VIOs) were due to return on the highways after their one month training.

“Let me reiterate that vehicle inspection officers have been asked to stay off our roads permanently,’’ he affirmed.

Ambode also warned operatives of the Federal Road Safety Commission to henceforth, stay only on fringes of highways, rather than on main Lagos streets.

“It has become evident that these agencies contribute to the traffic challenges on our roads,’’ the governor announced at a ceremony to inaugurate pedestrian bridges, lay-bys and slip roads at Ojodu-Berger, near Lagos.

“We will employ technology to track and monitor vehicle registration and Ministry of Transport (MOT) certifications,” he restated.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the pedestrian bridge inaugurated by the governor is 98 metres long with 150 metres of lay-bys on both sides of the expressway.

The bridge on Ogunnusi Road has two multi-bay bus parks with public toilets.

According to Ambode, the traffic situation at Ojodu Berger has posed challenges to the government, making his administration to give urgent attention to the problem.

“This decision was informed by the strategic importance of this axis being a major gateway into our state.”

The governor described the Ojodu-Berger project as the output of an innovative team of engineers, architects and town planners, who had worked hard to create an innovative solution.

“This is an ongoing process and we are working to create solutions to traffic congestion in every part of the state.

“If your neighbourhood or community is experiencing traffic challenges, be rest assured that we will soon be there.”

He said that the facility was put in place to ensure smooth flow of traffic on the expressway and safeguard the lives of people, who often dash across the expressway.

“Today, we are delighted that we have not only succeeded in transforming the landscape of this axis, we have also given a new and pleasant experience to everyone entering and exiting our state,” Ambode said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Commissioner for Transportation, Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi, last week Wednesday stated that the VIOs only went for training to improve their services in line with global best practices and that they were due to resume duties on the highway after completing the training.
