  • Alaba International Market demolition done to save lives – LASG

Alaba International Market demolition done to save lives – LASG

The Lagos State Government says recent demolition of distressed buildings in Alaba International Market in Ojo Local Council was neither a witch-hunt nor intended to acquire the land but done to protect lives.

Mr Gbolahan Oki, General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, (LABSCA) said this on Saturday during an on-the-spot assessment of the demolition site.

Oki visited the market amid heavy downpour alongside his counterpart in Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), Mr Kehinde Osinaike, and the seven-man committee set up by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the aftermath of the demolition exercise.

They were led on the trip by Mr Oluwole Sotire, Permanent Secretary of their parent parastatal, the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Recalled that South-East traders in the market, led by Imo Governor, Mr Hope Uzodimma, met with Gov. Sanwo-Olu of Lagos to put to rest allegations of tribal bias behind the demolition exercise.

During the on the spot assessment, Oki explained that the demolition was simply to enforce building regulations and laws, to prevent building collapse.

According to him, most of the demolished buildings were without permits, and necessary documentations needed by the state government were also ignored.

“All we are after is that the lives of traders and other Nigerians are extremely important to the Lagos State Government.

“I have seen people painting buildings that are delapidated, that are not good, it is not painting that makes a building new. Our lives are more important,” he said.

Oki urged owners of distressed buildings marked for demolition to remove them within two weeks, to prevent disaster, or else government would move in to take action.

“My mandate is to remove anything that is dilapidated, that is harmful to the people that even owns it,” he said.

The General Manager said Sanwo-Olu set up the seven-man committee to look into the demolition without causing disaffection among the traders at Alaba International Market.

He said LASBCA officials were usually prevented from enforcing laws by people who failed to get building plan approvals or those who did illegal conversion of their properties.

Also recalled that the LASBCA boss waded through flash floods to issue stop work order on a contractor on site from the Ojo Local Government, for amicable resolution of all issues.

He assured protesters carrying placards that government had their interests covered with the appointment of additional 17-man sub-committee compromising their market leadership, for quicker resolution of issues.

Oki explained why distressed buildings were being demolished and the need for some of the traders to do regularisation.

He said this was because of issues of land grabbers selling one land to several people as well as the need to correct haphazard development.

Earlier, the general manager and his team had a meeting with leadership of the Alaba International Market traders at LASBCA head office at Ikeja GRA, before they all embarked on the trip to the market.

During the meeting, the market leaders who are members of the seven-man technical committee set up by to look into the issues of demolition in Alaba International Market discussed the way forward.

The LASBCA boss explained processes and procedures guiding laws on physical developments and what must be done to comply with regulation.

He said that there was no ethnic colouration to the decisions of government, whose only motive was to prevent building collapse, to ensure safety of lives of the traders and other Nigerians.

Mr Chris Maduka, Secretary to the seven-man Technical Committee on Alaba International Demolition, commended action of the government to sanitise the market.

Maduka said it had brought them closer and was in the best interest of everybody, to save traders from touts extorting them with various conflicting taxes and illegal levies.

During the on-the-spot assessment to the market, Maduka appealed for cooperation and understanding of the traders affected by the demolition exercise.

He said that taking to protest or violence would defeat the purpose for which Sanwo-Olu set up the Committee.

Some of the affected traders carrying placards with various inscriptions at the market pleaded with Sanwo-Olu to fast track the assignment of the committee to restore their means of livelihood.

  • LAWMA to seal houses without waste bins

LAWMA to seal houses without waste bins

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says it will begin the sealing of homes without waste bins on Lagos Island and Mainland from July 7.

This is contained in a statement issued by LAWMA Executive Director, Finance, Mr Kunle Adebiyi, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Adebiyi said the decision followed an earlier issuance of abatement notices to the affected areas two months ago.

The authority had earlier issued abatement notices to those areas two months ago.

He urged property owners and residents to procure adequate waste bins for their homes.

“It is crucial for residents to cultivate proper environmental habits and support the efforts of the authority to establish a cleaner and more livable environment.

“By taking action against violations and ensuring compliance, we can create a sustainable environment and help build the Lagos of our dream,” Adebiyi said.

He said that the notice of intention to seal would serve as a final warning to residents who were yet to procure the bins and maintain proper waste management practices.

He added that the enforcement action was aimed at encouraging responsible environmental behavior and to reduce pollution in the city.

“LAWMA’s Enforcement Team will target areas on Lagos Mainland and Island, where violations have been observed.

“The team will carry out thorough inspections to identify individuals, households, or businesses that have consistently neglected waste management guidelines.

“Those found in violation will receive an intention to seal notice, outlining the specific actions required to rectify the situation and avoid further penalties.

“The exercise will be in phases; this is the phase one, and we will visit other areas in the state to ensure full compliance,” Adebiyi said.

He, however, urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for all.

Adebiyi noted that by adhering to waste management regulations, residents could contribute to the overall cleanliness and sustainability of the environment.

“By adhering to government’s directive for tenements to procure standard covered bins would ensure that our wastes are properly containerised.

“This will help save the environment from indiscriminate waste disposal and other hazardous consequences, such as flooding and outbreak of diseases,” Adebiyi said.

He said that LAWMA had been working toward improving waste management through the implementation of various initiatives such as waste sorting campaigns, recycling programmes and public awareness campaigns.

Adebiyi said that these efforts were skewed toward instilling a culture of responsible waste disposal to minimise the adverse impact of wastes on the environment.

He appealed to residents to join hands with the administration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to establish a cleaner and healthier environment.

Adebiyi also enjoined residents to shun indiscriminate waste disposal and take advantage of the waste management services provided by the Private Sector Participants operators.

  • APC chieftain hails Sanwo-Olu, Ambode reconciliation

APC chieftain hails Sanwo-Olu, Ambode reconciliation

Mr. Bola Babarinde, a former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), South Africa Chapter, has commended the reconciliatory effort of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and his immediate past predecessor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Babarinde in a statement on Monday, commended Sanwo-Olu for attending Ambode’s 60th birthday party and praising him for his dedication to serving Lagos state as governor and civil servant.

He said the gesture was a significant step toward rebuilding bridges and fostering unity among political leaders, and peace loving Nigerians.

The relationship between Sanwo-Olu and Ambode collapsed in 2019 over his denial of second term by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, with such attitude, Sanwo-Olu has learnt the importance of forgiveness, togetherness and love from his mentor, President Bola Tinubu.

Babarinde, who noted that the road to the Presidency by Tinubu was rough and tough with many lessons learnt, said Tinubu was never deterred but was determined to achieve his life time ambition.

“He was betrayed, abused, denigrated, unjustly accused and demonised by friends and foes, but he was never deterred and trudged, but rather he was determined to achieve his long time ambition.

“Tinubu have many disciples which failed to measure up to 10 per cent of his political sagacity, humanitarian posture, forgiveness and of course ability to predict the future.

“One of his many mentees is Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who organised a reception for hosting of the Capo di tutti back to his home state.

“Where friends, acquaintances attended and also served as the reunion for the four governors that served Lagos from 1999 till date.

“Sanwo-Olu started the reconciliation move with Ambode, his predecessor when he eulogised him during his 60th birthday with big publicity for such magnanimity and humility,” he said.
