Nigerians will continue to reap the rewards of our administration’s new economic reforms after the time of sacrifice needed to transform the nation.

President Bola Tinubu made this known on Thursday in Lagos at a reception in his honour by the Lagos state government.

He said that these rewards would be replicated in all the states and local governments of the country through the active participation of all the three tiers of government.

He said that the administration would work tirelessly to ensure that the country is brought back from the economic brinks to that of economic resilience.

The president appreciated the governors and the members of the national assembly present at the event, adding that the solidarity must continue for the betterment of Nigerians.

“We will work together in an open door policy that will bring Nigeria from the brinks back to a resilient economy; be ready.

“You governors, I know what I am going to do from Monday, Tuesday, up. I want us to be partners so that we can rescue our country and make it whole again.

“We shall receive the joy of giving, the joy of perseverance, the joy of resilience and endurance. You will see the reward. For this country is going to be prosperous for us.

“I am happy that the legislature, the executive arms of government are here. I appreciate it and I will continue to appreciate it more when we work together to dissect the possible economic prospects of our nation in favour of our children.”

The president said he will not allow the country’s huge population to be disappointed because it was not an alternative for him.

“The reason you voted for me is to see changes that will affect not only you but your children and we are set to realise that by re-engineering the economy to exploit it full potential.”

Gas explosion leaves four critically injured in Lagos

About four persons have sustained varying degrees of injuries after some gas cylinders exploded in the Ijaiye, Agege area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the explosion occurred in the early hours of Monday in a shop stored with gas cylinders.

Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Permanent Secretary confirmed the incident to pressmen.

According to him, one of the gas cylinders exploded as a result of gas leakage and caught fire in the process.

He said no life was lost, adding that the injured victims, which include three females and a male, suffered second-degree burns.

Osanyintolu also disclosed that the victims were immediately attended to by the Agency’s prehospital care, alongside LASAMBUS.

He said, “The victims have also been moved to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.

“The inferno has been completely put out by the combined effort of LASEMA LRT, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

“A post-incident assessment was conducted by the Agency’s LRT alongside LASG Fire. The shop has been cordoned off to avert a secondary incident.”

Petition: U.S. Immigration lawyer testifies against Lagos deputy governor

A U.S. Immigration lawyer, Mrs Olubusayo Fasidi, on Thursday said that Lagos Deputy Gov. Obafemi Hamzat took oath of allegiance in the U.S. to renounce Nigerian citizenship.

Fasidi, a Nigerian, testified before Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal.

She was led in evidence by Dr Olumide Ayeni (SAN), counsel to the petitioner, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party.

The witness told the tribunal that Hamzat, the third respondent in the petition, also applied for naturalisation as contained in Forms 8CFR/337 and N400.

Ayeni tendered the documents to the three-man tribunal but counsel to all the respondents objected, saying that the reason for their objection would be included in their final written addresses.

During cross-examination by Mr Eric Ogiegor, counsel to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the witness said that an individual could enjoy dual citizenship.

She, however, said that she was not aware of the provision of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution that dealt with dual citizenship.

She said that she was subpoenaed before the tribunal to explain U.S. law and not Nigeria’s Constitution.

Mr Bode Olanipekun (SAN), counsel to Hamzat and Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, asked the witness to disclose the jurisdiction and date Hamzat applied for naturalisation but she said she would not, because the information was protected by Privacy Act of 1974.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) counsel,  Mr Norris Quakers, asked the witness if she was aware that Hamzat disclosed his American citizenship.

The witness replied in the affirmative, and Quakers thereafter argued that the witness addressed issues of law and not those of facts.

The tribunal led by Justice Arum Ashom, while admitting all the documents in evidence, ordered counsel to the respondents to include their objections in their final written addresses.

The other members of the tribunal are Justice Mikail Abdullahi and Justice l.P. Braimoh.

The tribunal adjourned the case until June 26 for continuation of hearing.

Earlier, Ayeni presented result sheet from polling units in nine local government areas of the state to establish differences in some areas, against what is recorded on INEC’s Form EC 40A.

Counsel to INEC, Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat and APC objected to the admissibility of the Form EC 40A, reserving reasons until their final written addresses.

  • Lagos residents defy govt’s warning on ‘ponmo’ consumption

Lagos residents defy govt’s warning on ‘ponmo’ consumption

Despite the warning by the Federal Government on the purchase of cow skin (ponmo) due to the outbreak of Anthrax disease in some neighbouring countries, the trade in the commodity still thrives.

A survey of some markets at Mushin, Egbeda, Oshodi and Ikotun, all in Lagos State, by NAN revealed that the demand for ponmo hasn’t dropped.

This is in spite of the announcement made by the government.

The Federal Government had, on June 13, alerted the general public, to the outbreak of anthrax disease in some neighbouring countries within the West African sub-region.

It advised Nigerians to desist from the consumption of hides at the moment.

The statement read in part, “the disease, which has claimed some lives, is a bacterial disease that affects both animals and man that is a zoonotic disease.

It said that anthrax spores are naturally found in the soil and commonly affect domestic and wild animals.

It specifically stated that the disease was widespread in Northern Ghana, bordering Burkina Faso and Togo.

A Housewife, Mrs Adewunmi Onalaja, told NAN that she did not know how to stop buying ponmo because her family enjoyed it.

“I’d be lying if I say I haven’t heard the announcement, but it’s hard to comply. When the news broke out, I was afraid initially but after a week I spoke with my customer and she told me she hasn’t gone to the market of late, so I bought from her.

“The only precaution I will take is that when the one I stocked up from my customer finishes, I will stop buying till it’s safe,” Onalaja said.

Chidera Ezeokocha, who runs a restaurant at Egbeda, told NAN that cooking local delicacies such as Afang, Edikaikong and Egusi stew are almost impossible without cow hides.

“I still put ponmo in my soups, those soups are incomplete without them, but I make sure I season it well. I thought the announcement was to alert us about poisonous ponmo.

“If I see a ponmo that is not good I will know, I have been in this food business long enough for me to know that a particular ponmo is bad,” Chidera said.

Sakirat Rafiu, who hawks peppered cow skin, told NAN that she doubted if Nigerians could obey government’s warning.

“The truth is that I don’t believe Nigerians will stop trading in ponmo, except they start getting arrested, which I am not sure is possible.

“Ponmo is cheap and demand for it is high and with how expensive things are, people don’t have a choice,” she said.

Kikiopefoluwa Idris, a businesswoman, said that she couldn’t be bothered about the warning on ponmo comsumption because she had never been a fan of ponmo.

“I have always preferred the dried ponmo; the ones you have to dip inside water to soften it. I buy that in bulk because it has longer life span than the fresh ones displayed in the open market,” Idris said.

On her part, Mrs Esther Adebamowo, the Market Leader (Iyaloja), Olugbede Market in Egbeda, appealed to buyers and sellers to comply with government’s directive.

“Government knows it all, and they’re particular about our wellbeing. I’d advise that we listen to them, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“On our part, there’s nothing we can do to stop the buying and selling of ponmo, except government comes out to say anyone caught selling or buying will be punished.

“I as Iyaloja can’t sanction the sellers,” Adebamowo said.

NAN reports that the government had resuscitated a standing committee on the control of anthrax in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

People can get infected with anthrax spores by coming in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.

The silver lining is the fact that Anthrax is not a contagious disease, and so, one cannot get it by coming in close contact with an infected person.

The signs of anthrax are flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever, muscle aches and if not diagnosed and treated early, leads to pneumonia, severe lung problems, difficulty in breathing, shock and death.nb

Lagos: 26-year-old man machetes pastor over fake prophesy

Lagos police  have arrested a 26-year-old man, one Akpannu, for allegedly cutting a pastor with a machete for allegedly giving him a fake prophecy.

Akpannu was alleged to have in May, 2023, cut the pastor of one of the new generation churches, Prophet Anayochukeu, for allegedly giving him a fake prophecy.

It was learnt that the incident  happened at the church’s headquarters in the Ijesha area of Lagos State.

The accused claimed that the pastor, during a prayer session, told him that he was about to lose his sister except when certain prayers were conducted.

The accused said a pastor had earlier told him that for him to be successful in business he must perform certain spiritual cleansing which required him to buy coconut and dry gin with which to pray.

Angered by the earlier prophecy which the accused claimed did not work, he attacked the second pastor with a cutlass inside the church premises.

The matter was reported to the police, who trailed the accused to his hideout where he was arrested.

While at the station, the accused alleged that both pastors instilled fear in him by giving him false prophecies that his only sister would die by January, this year.

  • Oyo guber battle: Makinde survives round one as Tribunal upholds his election

Oyo guber battle: Makinde survives round one as Tribunal upholds his election

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has upheld the re-election of Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The governorship election was held on Saturday March 18 and the result was declared on Sunday March 19, 2023. Makinde polled a total of 563,617 votes to defeat his closest rival, Senator Teslim of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 251,230 votes. Chief Adebayo Adelabu of the Accord came a distant third, polling 38,757. But Folarin and Adelabu did not file any petition against Makinde before the tribunal.

The tribunal in a unanimous ruling on Friday, read by Justice Ejiron Emudainohwo, and supported by Jutices Baraka Wali, and I.S. Galadima, dismissed the petition filed by the AA governorship candidate, Babatunde Ajala, and awarded a cost of N600,000 against him.

The tribunal awarded a cost of N100,000 in favour of INEC, and N250,000 each in favour of Governor Makinde and PDP. INEC had asked for a cost of N300,000, while counsel to Makinde asked for cost of N5million, and PDP also demanded a cost of N3million. But the petitioner’s counsel pleaded for forgiveness from senior legal counsel and the panel.

In the petition, INEC was the first responded, while Governor Seyi Makinde was the second respondent. The PDP was the third respondent. A legal luminary, Otunba Kunle Kalajaiye (SAN) held brief for Governor Makinde, while Mr. Isiaka Olagunju (SAN), was the counsel for PDP.

The lead counsel to Ajala, Mr. Etibo Orowo King, had withdrawn the case before the judgment was delivered, saying the petition was withdrawn in order not to disrupt the current peace in the state, saying: “It was not a judgment. It was a ruling on our application to withdraw our petition. We actually withdrew the petition in the interest of justice, peace and tranquility in Oyo State. This is why the panel dismissed our petition based on our application for withdrawal.”

Kalejaiye had told the panel before the judgment was read that it should reflect in their judgment that the Electoral Act should be amended to have a threshold that any candidate that did not score a particular number of votes should not be eligible to raise a petition against the winner of the poll. But the panel asked him during te hearing if the request would not infringe on the fundamental human rights of the candidates. And Kalajaiye said he said that to push for the amendment of the Electoral Act. But in the unanimous ruling, the panel said the request would be sent to the National Assembly.

The PDP counsel also supported the move for the amendment of the Electoral Act to reflect a threshold for eligibility to file petitions before election tribunals.

Speaking with journalists after the judgment, Kalejaiye said: “It was the final end of the petition brought by Action Alliance against the emergence of Governor Seyi Makinde in the March 18 election. The petition was essentially to ask for rerun of the election on the basis that the candidate that was cleared for the election was not the candidate that was filled for the candidate of that election and the petition was filed, and we have responded to the petition, only for us to come this morning and find out that the party and the candidates claimed that they have looked at the petition again and they are not sure that they will succeed and they brought an application to withdraw the petition.

“We are convinced that it was when they saw our response to the petition that they made up their minds on the unavailability of the petition because we attached our petition on 18 grounds and that comminated into what happened today. The tribunal has dismissed the petition and has awarded cost against Action Alliance (AA).

“But there is one thing that is very clear which I made to the tribunal. Candidates, and political parties, who performed abysmally in an election should not be allowed to come to court to waste judicial time. Where a political party only scored 387 votes, and challenged a person, who scored 563, 617 votes in all the 33 local governments, is a waste of judicial time.

“The electoral act needs to be amended to create a threshold that if you have not scored at least a quarter, or 25 per cent of all the total vote cast in a state, you should not come to the election tribunal. Three judges have left their jurisdictions to come and sit for a petition that is dead on arrival. So, only serious petitioners will have access to court. This is a call for the amendment of Electoral Act.”
