Just in: Lagos set to announce reinstatement Of monthly environmental sanitation

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a clean, flood-free, and environmentally sustainable city by calling on residents to adopt proper sanitation practices as a daily routine.

Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, made this known during an inspection tour of several high-risk areas including Idi-Araba, Orile Iganmu, and Alaba Rago.

He stressed that the government is poised to reintroduce the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise, with the formal launch date to be announced shortly.

Wahab decried the worsening sanitary conditions in parts of the city, especially the activities of illegal cart pushers and traders operating along roads, drainage channels, and medians.

According to him, intelligence reports revealed that a syndicate is fuelling illegal waste dumping activities around Idi-Araba.

“At Idi-Araba under Mushin Local Government, we observed a significant number of cart pushers, which is against the state’s environmental laws. Enforcement has been ongoing and will now be intensified across the state,” he said.

The Commissioner said an abandoned dumpsite in the area, now under illegal use by the cart-pushing syndicate, will be dismantled.

He also warned that traders conducting business under the Daleko Bridge would be removed if they failed to comply with sanitation guidelines.

At Alaba Rago Market in Ojo, Lagos, Wahab expressed disappointment at the unsanitary practices and illegal expansion of market activities onto public roads and drainage alignments.

“They’ve turned the road median into a waste dump. We’ve given them until tomorrow evening to clean up and relocate their goods into the market space. Failure to comply will result in the market being sealed,” he warned.

He added that the market chairman has pledged to correct all infractions, but if the traders fail to act responsibly, the Ministry will have no choice but to enforce strict sanctions.

The Commissioner also inspected the Iganmu Channel at Orile, which had become heavily silted due to indiscriminate waste dumping.

He ordered the deployment of swamp buggies next week to clear the blocked waterway and prevent flooding.

Wahab said the government is aware of the growing population and has responded by deploying over 100 LAWMA trucks to support areas where PSP operators have challenges.

However, he stressed that waste management is a shared responsibility.

“Many residents want to enjoy waste collection services but don’t want to pay. That has to stop. Every ward has designated PSP operators, and once residents pay, these operators are mandated to perform,” he stated.

He appealed to Lagosians to stop dumping waste on roads, medians, and in canals, and to properly bag their waste and use approved PSP operators.

The Commissioner was accompanied on the inspection by key officials, including the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu; Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite; Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin; KAI Corps Marshal, Major Olatunbosun Cole (Rtd); and GM of LASWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi.

The areas visited include Ojerinde, Ewunmi, Wonuola, Takuro, Paul Okuntola, and Taiwo Streets in Idi-Araba; Alaba Rago Market in Ojo LGA; and the Iganmu Channel in Orile.

  • FG moves to deepen Lekki Channel beyond 16.5M

FG moves to deepen Lekki Channel beyond 16.5M

The Federal Government has given the nod for the maintenance dredging of the $1.5bn Lekki Deep seaport channel from its present 16.5metres to 17metres in the first instance as it targets 19meters depth.

Disclosing this over the weekend during his maiden visit to Lekki port, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Abubakar Dantsoho in the company of senior management staff of the Authority, urged Lekki Port to consolidate transshipment volumes to landlocked neighboring countries.
According to Abubakar Dantsoho, “The rise in throughput volume at Lekki Port is exciting to us.
“Lekki’s capacity to berth super post-panamax vessels and deliver rapid cargo and vessel turnaround positions is a game-changer for Nigeria’s export competitiveness, particularly for agro-allied products, as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) gains traction.
“The port’s efficiency is driving steady increases in transshipment numbers, meeting the maritime needs of neighboring countries and supporting NPA’s goal of achieving economies of scale.
“This enhanced competitiveness fuels demand, boosts foreign exchange inflows, and contributes significantly to Nigeria’s year-on-year trade surplus, reinforcing the national economy
“So it’s very pleasing to note the rising export figures and we hope that the export volume is going to double or even triple in the nearest future. And because of that, we have to still reaffirm our commitment as NPA management to do what we can possibly do within our own powers and with the support of the Federal Government to ensure that this trend, this beautiful throughput trend you have shown us, continues to grow and increase.
“So what are we doing to ensure that this trend continues? We are doing about five things. Now, number one, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, with the recommendation of the Nigerian Port Authority has gotten the approval for the dredging of the channel at Lekki Port.
“This is something that we have been working towards, something that we’ve been discussing for almost two or three years. And finally, we give God the glory that it has happened.
“We have also syndicated a strategic partnership agreement with
China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to undertake the dredging in the overriding interest of trade facilitation”. But because we wanted to also enhance the relationship and make the partnership stronger in a concerted bid to grow Nigeria’s trade volumes”.
“So I think that’s a clear indication of how serious and how supportive we can get when it comes to issues of Lekki Port.”
On automation, the NPA MD stated that, “Now, the other thing I want to mention is the automation issue that you have raised. Now, luckily for you, and most likely because you are the most current or the latest port that we have in Nigeria, it is expected naturally that all those things that are required for a modern port should be here. Lekki Port is up to date with the technologies and we are very happy about that.
“The technology that is here will be part of the main requirements for the deployment of the port community system, which is a precursor for keying into the National Single Window.
“We are hoping that other port locations or other terminals will very soon also have 100 percent capability in terms of technology deployment so that once we deploy the Port Community System, keying into it would not be an issue. So I really appreciate that Lekki Port has done well in the area of technology deployment.”
On channel survey, the NPA MD explained that the contract has been awarded.
“We have awarded the contract for the survey of the channel, which is also a major requirement of the international port and harbour and navigation systems. This will give us more optimisation in the area of channel management around Lekki Port.”
On Lekki Port request for a reduction in Ship Dues, the NPA MD explained that many of the equipment the Authority buys to ensure efficiency at the ports are dollarised.
“We keep buying Navigational Bouys, Tug Boats and otherd to ensure efficiency in port operations across the country. Because many of the things that we buy are dolariser, in as much as it’s necessary to lessen the burden of Lekki Port payments to government, Lekki Port should also know that we need to have more money to be able to buy more of these things and also ensure that personnel who are running them are also well paid.
“When the Single window is finally deployed, and 95 percent of port processes become paperless, the revenue at the ports will triple. Electronic transaction will completely or near completely eliminate unreceipted payments in our ports
“When this happens, it is believed that we are going to make more money. At that point, I think NPA will look at the possibility of bringing down the Ship Dues.”
The NPA MD also commended the Management of Lekki Deep Seaport for sustaining superior performance and remains unwavering in its commitment to providing every necessary support to optimize the port’s potential.
Speaking earlier, the MD of Lekki Port, Wang Qiang presented several key requests for policy support to the NPA MD.
“We wish to request for an adjustment of Tariff Structure to reflect service costs and inflation, reduction in Ship Dues specifically for large vessels and feeders, to enhance port competitiveness.
“Provision of Night Pilotage Services to enable 24/7 operations and improve vessel turnaround time, amongst others,” the Lekki Port MD stated.
The NPA MD also paid a visit to the $19.5bn Dangote Petrochemicals Refinery, and met Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.

OUTPUT CONSOLIDATION: Managing Director Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho (3rd Right), Managing Director Lekki Port Mr. Qiang Wang (1st Left), Board Chairman Lekki Port, Mr. Abiodun Dabiri (1st Right) and Executive Director Finance & Administration NPA, Vivian Richard-Edet (2nd Right) on Saturday May 24th 2025 when the NPA Management team paid performance enhancement visit to Lekki Deep Seaport.

  • Lagos kicks off N10 billion aquaculture centre project in Epe

Lagos kicks off N10 billion aquaculture centre project in Epe

Construction has commenced on the Lagos Aquaculture Centre of Excellence (LACE), a major fish farming and processing facility located in Igbonla, Epe. The first phase of the project is valued at ₦10 billion.

Once completed, the centre is expected to produce 50 million fingerlings annually, 2,000 tonnes of table-size fish, 20,000 tonnes of processed fish, and 24,000 tonnes of fish feed each year. The project is being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on a 35-hectare site.

The Lagos State Government signed a Joint Venture Agreement with Dula Agro-Services Limited to develop the LACE project.

Speaking on the development, Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, said the centre would support the establishment of at least 5,000 smallholder fish farms. It is also projected to create approximately 1,000 indirect jobs during the construction phase and 500 direct jobs once operational.

The facility will include hatcheries, grow-out systems, fish processing units, and a feed mill to support both the centre and associated out-growers. These out-growers will supply fish to the processing plant, enhancing the entire aquaculture value chain.

Ms. Olusanya added that the centre will also serve as a hub for research and training in aquaculture, covering farming practices, business development, and sustainability.

According to her, LACE is designed to anchor aquaculture growth in Lagos by diversifying fish species, enhancing food security, and empowering local fish farmers. The project also aims to boost fish production, ensure stable fish supply, and promote processed and value-added aquaculture products for both domestic and export markets.

She emphasized the importance of expanding hatcheries and processing plants to improve farm incomes and create employment, especially in rural areas.

Dula Agro-Services Limited Managing Director, Mr. Adeyemi Adeshina, said the PPP initiative reflects a strategic vision to position Lagos as a leading player in global aquaculture. He noted that the centre will focus on producing export-quality seafood while maintaining environmental standards.

He also highlighted the project’s goal to improve access to quality fingerlings and reduce feed costs through its dedicated feed mill, ultimately contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s aquaculture industry.

Adeshina expressed confidence that, with the right infrastructure, Nigeria can become a competitive force in the global seafood market.

Lagos APC primaries: Consensus candidates emerge for 4 LGs

Chairmanship candidates for four local council areas have emerged at the ongoing  Local Government primaries of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

Mr Isa Jubril emerged candidate for Iba LCDA, Mrs Motunrayo Gbadebo for Ijede LCDA, Mr Rasaq Kasali emerged for Lekki LCDA and Mr Azeez Kareem  emerged as Otto Awori LCDA candidate.

NAN reports all the candidates emerged via consensus and were affirmed by the delegates of each of the council areas.

Voting to pick candidates for other  other council areas was still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.

Deputy governor of the state, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, while addressing   delegates before voting, urged them to be peaceful and orderly, saying that the whole country was watching.

Hazmat said: “We take this exercise very serious. Our president who is our leader and father, is monitoring us from Abuja.

“This is his state and you know he takes the people at the grassroots very seriously. That is why all of us must be patient.

“LASIEC is here to observe the process. This is a peaceful process. Let us do it peacefully and quickly and go. Let us be calm and be patient. Let us do it well.

“In Lagos, it is APC that is still  existing, the umbrella (of PDP) is torn, so we should not play into the hands of  outsiders (opposition).”

Reeling out voting modalities earlier,  Chairman, Lagos APC Electoral Committee, Mr Babatunde Ogala ,said  delegates of the local governments with consensus candidates would be allowed to affirm their candidates before delegates of councils with competing aspirants.

“Some Local Governments seem to have done their process at home, we will take them first so that they affirm and depart.”, he said shortly before the emergence of the four consensus candidates.

Stating that aspirants who wanted to withdraw were at liberty to do so, Ogala urged delegates to leave the venue after voting to decongest the venue.

  • Lagos begins demolition of illegal buildings in GRA, others

Lagos begins demolition of illegal buildings in GRA, others

The Lagos State Government will begin enforcing building regulations in Ikeja GRA this weekend. Demolition of illegal structures is scheduled to start on Saturday.

Mr Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary at the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), made this known during a meeting with developers and residents of Ikeja GRA.

He stated that the time for issuing warnings was over. Enforcement, he said, would begin immediately, beginning with building markings and demolitions on Saturday.

“Thank you very much. As elders say, a journey of a million years begins in one day. I’m ready to lead.

“If I get approval, I’ll start painting and marking buildings owners won’t like. I will remove them,” Oki said.

He explained that enforcement would start in Ikeja GRA and then move to Ikoyi and Banana Island. The state would no longer tolerate lawlessness.

Oki said LASBCA officers would accompany him and remove buildings that visibly breach approved building plans, especially those with extra floors or altered use.

“The operation will continue for two to three weeks. Anyone who feels untouchable will be arrested and jailed.

“We are past the warning stage. We’ll seal and demolish any non-compliant structure. My officers are ready,” he said.

He clarified that the initiative is not about wealth or aesthetics but about maintaining order and safeguarding public interest in residential areas.

“If your approval was for a three-bedroom flat, don’t convert it to four. Don’t build higher than allowed. Follow the rules,” he said.

Oki said LASBCA would not accept payments or offers to regularise as substitutes for compliance with planning regulations.

“You will pay heavily. Nobody told you to build beyond approval. You’ll be held accountable and prosecuted,” he cautioned.

He criticised property owners who sent engineers to the meeting, calling it a sign of disrespect to the government and community.

“This isn’t just about buildings or money. It’s about being responsible and thinking about others. In the UK or US, people obey planning laws,” he said.

He noted that past notices and invitations were ignored, adding that the government would no longer tolerate breaches of planning laws.

“This is our second meeting. Yet, the same people send representatives. You can’t keep breaking the law without facing the consequences.

“Enough is enough. We’re restoring order to GRA,” he said.

He also condemned the obstruction of access roads, especially those leading to key facilities like the Lagos State General Hospital.

“Emergency vehicles can’t get through due to parked cars. If someone dies in an ambulance, who will take responsibility?” he asked.

Dr Muiz Banire (SAN), Chairman of the Ikeja GRA Residents Association, voiced strong support for the government’s actions.

“We are very satisfied, even excited. Enforcement begins tomorrow. The message is simple: everyone must obey the law.

“That’s all we ask — residents and government alike. Without rule of law, there can be no meaningful development,” Banire said.

NAN reports that Ikeja GRA residents have long raised concerns about overcrowding, illegal conversions, and blocked access to public infrastructure.
