FG uncovers 476 online sites set up to fight govt. – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government says it has uncover about 476 online publication sites dedicated to daily churning out of fake news to fight the government.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this on Monday in Abuja when he received officials of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations on a courtesy visit

Mohammed said the latest of the hatchet jobs by the traducers was the fake publication on President Muhammadu Buhari’s mental status.

“It will amaze you that recently we unveiled almost 476 online publication sites that are dedicated to daily engaging in churning out fake news to fight the government.

“The latest which I found ridiculous is the one that said days ago, that they had information that when Mr President was in the UK the last time, he was advised to step down because he could not even recognise members of his immediate family.

“I begin to wonder how they can go this far, simply because they know that people are gullible and they will make the fake news to go viral,’’ he said.

The minister noted that fake news is taking a new dimension and threatening the existence of the country.

He said the debilitating effects of the menace was not only on the government but on every Nigerian.

Mohammed noted that many marriages had been wrecked as a result of fake news, particularly through the social media while people had lost their lives and many others committed suicide.

To buttress his position, the minister recalled a recent report where fake news almost led to killing of 600 applicants by scammers.

“A young man sent out letters to 600 people to enlist into Nigerian Army and collected N10,000 from each of them.

“He asked them to report at the Okitipupa Army Barracks in Ondo state on a particular day to collect their letters of appointment.

“At the same time, he alerted the Commandant of the Barrack that Boko Haram insurgents were coming to invade the barrack on the same day,’’ he said.

Mohammed said his ministry had spearheaded the campaign against fake news years back before the menace got so bad.

He said the NIPR had critical role to play in ensuring the fight against fake news.

“This is where your body comes in because you have a powerful platform to ensure that the menace of fake news is confronted squarely.

“Regrettably, however, members of this institute have been found wanting, they have most times place pecuniary interest and motives above patriotism and nationalism

“You will recall the sad incidence of the P&ID saga.

“It was a member of this institute, a firm of PR consultants that was hired to give impression to the world that Nigeria entered into agreement with P&ID and renege and have to pay about nine billion dollars.

“It took the combine interventions of this ministry and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to go to the UK to change the narrative to prove that the purported contract was a huge scam,’’ he said.

The minister admonished members of the institute to place nationalism and patriotism over and above pecuniary gains in the discharge of their duties.

He also assured NIPR of the support of the ministry in its proposed plan to use its platform to engender stakeholders interaction and engagement on national security and cohesion.

Earlier, Malam Mukhtar Sirajo, the National President and Chairman, Governing Council of NIPR said they were willing to work with the Federal Government to engender peace and unity.

He also seized the opportunity to invite the minister to the Annual General Meeting of the Institute holding in Bauchi in May.

FG not overwhelmed by insecurity – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government says it is not overwhelmed by security challenges facing the country and has the wherewithal to confront them headlong and restore law and order.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed stated this on Tuesday in Lagos at a meeting with the Online Publishers.

Mohammed who was briefing the publishers on national security said the federal government was conscious of the development and working to restore peace, law and order,

The minister berated those advocating for truncation of democracy over the security challenges.

“I have read comments saying the Federal Government is overwhelmed and does not have a clue as to how to tackle the challenges.

“Some have even gone as far as suggesting a truncation of the democratic order, a clearly treasonable stance.

“Well, I am here today to assure all Nigerians that the government acknowledges the security challenges we face at this time, from terrorism to kidnaping, banditry and farmer-herder conflict.

“It is definitely not overwhelmed and indeed it has the wherewithal, as you will see in the days ahead, to confront the challenges headlong and restore law and order, peace and security,’’ he said.

The minister frowned at the negative narrative that the terrorists and bandits had superior firepower over the nation’s military.

He said the military were constraint by the possibility of recording collateral damage.

“One of the most difficult things to do, for a democratically-elected government, is to use the instruments of coercion against its own people.

“For example, while the nation’s military have superior firepower over the rag tag band of Boko Haram and ISWA, the terrorists most often than not operate among the populace, either in our villages or towns.

“Hence the military, in tackling them, is usually careful to avoid collateral damage,’’ he said.

Mohammed added: “The same applies to the kidnappers who abduct our school children.

“Usually, the location of the kidnappers is not unknown to the security forces, but they still have to exercise caution in order not to hurt the same children they are trying to rescue.

“Despite these inhibitions, the security forces have the wherewithal to decisively tackle the challenges’’.

Mohammed said the recent announcement by the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on the readiness of government to prosecute 400 suspects arrested for allegedly funding terrorism was a testament of government’s determination to decisively tackle terrorism and other violent crimes.

He appealed to Nigerians and particularly the media to play their part in lowering the palpable tension in the polity.

“The first step is to tone down the rhetoric.

“While the media must continue to carry out its primary responsibility to inform, criticize and stimulate debate, it must also realise that it can only carry out this responsibility in an atmosphere of peace and security.

“I am therefore appealing to the media to play its part in dousing the pervasive tension.

“Lending your platforms to uncompromising separatists and die-hard pessimists about the survival of our nation can only overheat the polity and aggravate the security challenges.

“This is not a call for censorship. It is a call for responsibility, in the national interest,’’ he said.

The minister also appealed to all Nigerians to continue to support security agencies who are working daily to protect them.

  • Twitter Blues: Lai Mohamed’s And Garba Shehu’s Outbursts, By Magnus Onyibe

Twitter Blues: Lai Mohamed’s And Garba Shehu’s Outbursts, By Magnus Onyibe

    By Magnus onyibe.

The penchant or predilection for Nigerian government officials , particularly those in the top hierarchy of the ministry of information and in the higher echelon of the presidency to demonize the citizens of this great country has been taken to the next level. Perhaps the casting of Nigerians, particularly men and women in the news media organizations as enemies of the country, is part of the next level which the ruling party promised to take Nigerians to, when it was seeking re-election in 2019. Such antics may be great politics, but they certainly illustrate how the incumbent government is disrespecting Nigerians.
The observation above is underscored by the recent statement by the minister of Information, Lai Mohamed and the Special Assistant to the president Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu who have been blaming Nigerians and the management of Twitter for planning to locate Twitter’s office for Africa in Ghana instead of Nigeria.
While trying to deflect the allegation by Nigerians , especially the youths and members of the main opposition party , PDP that the choice of Ghana as opposed to Nigeria for Twitter head office, was reflective of the leadership failure in our country, which is underpinned by the ineptitude of the incumbent government, evidenced by the horrendous state of insecurity in the country, and the disdain for civil liberties by the authorities , particularly with respect to freedom of speech; the information minister and media assistant to the president in their characteristic manner of defending the indefensible, choose to shield government while disparaging Nigerians and Twitter. Instead of owning up to the fact that Nigeria is teetering on the brinks and indeed in a low steam internal war , even as it is fast becoming a basket case , then dwell on what is being done to remedy the situation if there are such plans, the minister choose to attack fellow citizens and the media, while the president’s spokesman lambasted Twitter and parodied Ghana for what is clearly an embarrassment to our country.
Before now, it was ‘normal’ for the current ruling party to blame the former ruling party , PDP for all the calamities that have befallen our country even six (6) years after it took over the reins of power in Aso Rock Villa.
But a critical mass of Nigerians are currently resolving to make it clear to the APC that they would no longer accept the subterfuge of pulling the-wool-over-their-eyes. As such they are demanding that the ruling party take responsibility for the economic, sociopolitical as well as ethno-religious quagmire that are now practically and systematically plaguing and decimating the country.
The least that was expected from the ruling party is an apology for the crushing misfortune that Nigerians have suffered in the past six years that it has been on the saddle in Aso Rock Villa.
That is the minimum gesture of penance that the incumbent government should be tendering to Nigerians for its abysmal leadership of the country. But instead , and without the required morale rectitude, the ruling party through its aficionados is playing on the intelligence of the long suffering masses of Nigeria, who would have benefited from the job opportunities that is intrinsic in Twitter establishing its African head office in Nigeria. Apart from jobs creation, the presence of high technology firms like Twitter in a community or society have the potential to facilitate technology transfer. That is why high tech firms such as Twitter , Google, Microsoft etc are to be wooed not disparaged. Even in the USA and Europe, states and countries respectively compete amongst each other for the citing of the headquarters of firms like Tesla , Microsoft, Apple etc in their jurisdiction. For a practical example. Think of the technological advancements in automobile repairs made possible by the establishment of vehicles assembly plants such as Volkswagen , Peugeot, Mercedes, Styr trucks etc in Nigeria in the 1980s. Most of the best motor mechanics that we have in Nigeria today , owe their expertise to the experience gained working in the vehicle assembly plants.
While Nigerians have been waiting to no avail for the show of remorse by the government in power for the unprecedented levels of unemployment, galloping inflation and astronomical naira/dollar exchange rate, not to mention the malaise of insecurity that has assumed a pandemic level. Characteristically, government’s human mega phones have elected to further insult the intelligence of Nigerians by shifting the blame to the government that it took leadership from 6 years ago; and on which it had a fetish for blaming all the woes in our country: to trying to make the average Nigerian feel guilty for causing Twitter to shun Nigeria , while also vilifying Twitter for making a business decision to sideline her .
By blaming the mass media and the masses for the decision by a politically conscious global business entity such as Twitter to locate their African head office outside Nigeria , the propaganda agencies of government have descended to a new level of low and infamy. That is simply because making Nigerian people the cannon fodder, is not only disingenuous, but rather unfortunate and unjustifiable.
Ideally, the government information management apparatchiks should have admitted the current terrifying and horrendous state of insecurity in our country which has rendered nearly the whole of north east region almost ungovernable. That our country is jeopardized economically , politically and socially can not be denied.
So what our country’s image managers needed to do , is to reassure the world that all hands are on deck to restore peace, stabilize the country, and improve on respect for fundamental human rights such as free speech and right to express dissent, (key democracy grand norms) on which Nigeria is being scored lowly.
Instead of doing as outlined above, government propagandists are berating Nigerians and lampooning Twitter.
A less brash and combative approach would have been to properly situate the challenges that our country is currently grappling with and articulate the efforts being made to address the concerns of Twitter that made it ignore Nigeria , where it has an estimated 25 million users , the country that ranks as number 8 in internet usage in the world , and the nation with the biggest economy in Africa with the highest Gross Domestic Product , GDP on the continent.
Where Lai Mohamed and Garba Shehu should have been enlightening Twitter that Nigeria is about to slay the twin demons currently bedeviling our country: which are the lack of will to implement the overdue political restructuring of Nigeria, but which the ruling party APC and northern political forum
are now green lighting, they resorted to being clever by half.
While the world should have been further informed that the concomitant issue of rotation of presidency between the north and south, which is the second demon shackling the nation and preventing her from attaining its potentials would also be jettisoned as soon as the practice of true federalism commences, when northern leaders make good their promise to accept restructuring of Nigeria politically, they opted to be coy in a matter that requires forthrightness.
Ordinarily , the Nigerian publicists should have been sharing with Twitter the more positive picture of Nigeria as outlined above particularly with respect to the plans that are afoot to address Twitter’s concerns about our country’s unflattering human rights records accentuated or headlined by #Enfsars protests of October last year, and the ugly fall outs.
But while our information minister has elected to insult the intelligence of Nigerians by literarily telling them that they are the architect of their own misfortune on one hand, the presidential spokesman on the other hand, decided to talk trash to Twitter as if their presence in Nigeria would not have made a difference in creating employment for the unemployed thereby boosting our economy.
As opposed to filibustering , why not emphasize to Twitter and other multinationals that Nigeria is actually on the cusp of national rebirth as it is determined to eliminate the twin demons that have pinned our country down in the doldrums. And when that happens the much sort after autonomy of the states via devolution of power from the federal to state governments that would promote healthy competition amongst the states could be achieved. That would enable our country leap forward in the manner that China surged in growth and prosperity when it changed its scorch earth policy- Cultural Revolution-steep in communism after its founding father Mao Tse-Tung passed away in 1968 and Deng Xiaoping, considered the father of modern China took over the reins of leadership of that country and thereafter set the agenda that enabled her to come from behind Japan , Germany, France, Sweden, Uk and other European and Asian countries to become the second biggest economy in the world, after the USA.
As some of us might have already figured out , Twitter is just a metaphor or is symbolic of other major firms that have exited or opted not to operate in Nigeria due to the toxic sociopolitical and economic atmosphere currently prevailing in our country. By now, it is common knowledge that Dunlop, Mitchelin and other such firms that had been operating in Nigeria for at least half a millennium have relocated to Ghana in the last decade or so because that country has made conscious efforts to be business friendly through economic, social and political reforms. These are qualities and atmosphere that unfortunately our country is bereft of . Even CNN has seized having its correspondent domiciled in Nigeria by downgrading it to a position only manned by Stephanie Busari. Gone are the days when my good friend, CNN correspondent, Jeff Koinage was resident in Nigeria and covering west Africa from here as David Mackenzie based in South Africa covers the southern African region.
When the information minister should be finicky about the incorrectness of the images of Nigeria being broadcast by CNN by commissioning an outfit to capture iconic and ennobling sights and sounds of our country for CNN and other satellite broadcast stations to use, he is busy chasing perceived internal enemies whom he is accusing of de-marketing Nigeria . You only need to see the images of Nigeria broadcast on CNN and other global tv outfits depicting how COVID-19 mask wearing is playing out globally to understand how unedifying images of Nigeria are presented to the outside world and in an uncoordinated manner.
Has anyone seen the DHL-global logistics firm’s advert about its wide reach in Africa? While Ghana , Kenya , South Africa etc are noted in the advert for their tourism potentials , Nigeria’s notorious traffic jam in lagos was the mascot used as the iconic feature in Nigeria by DHL. Such de-marketing gimmicks have remained unchallenged or uncorrected by the minister of information.
But he appears to prefer latching on to victimization of Nigerians since the ruling party must find somebody to blame so that the APC support base would be riled up and energized, even when they know the truth about the leadership paralysis that has engulfed our country.
Anyone in doubt about how Nigeria is portrayed in bad light in the referenced DHL poster advert should not take my word for it. Just check out the poster on the wall of DHL office for international passport collection, (after visa is issued) in Victoria island, lagos ,to see how Nigeria is subconsciously being de-marketed.
But typical of the image makers of our dear country, instead of toeing the foregoing outlined path of honor and ensuring that the reputation of Nigeria is dwell burnished , the minister and the president’s media assistant unleashed their ire on long suffering Nigerians, the media industry and Twitter by standing the truth on its head. That is reminiscent of the manner that ex president Donald Trump of the USA kept misleading his followers by alleging that the November 2020 elections in the USA was rigged, therefore president Joe Biden is not a legitimate president.
Below is what Information minister Lai Mohammed stated in a televised media briefing on why Twitter did not pitch its tent in Nigeria: “this is what you get when you de-market your own country…”
The minister went on to excoriate Nigerian youths that spear headed the #Endsars protests that shook the country to its roots. And in the same breath that he was condemning the youths who staged #Endsars protests that was later hijacked by hoodlums, largely because the authorities failed to engage the youths constructively, and on time, the minister claimed that government is not against criticism or dissent. Yet, it unleashed mayhem on #Endsars youth protesters in October last year. It beats me hollow that the minister would not realize that such atrocity committed by our police and army against our youths and footages of which went viral , would not be offensive to the likes of Twitter that is so very socially conscious.
And as if determined not to be outdone by the minister in defending government , the seriousness of the issue was diminished in the following cheeky remark also attributed to Garba Shehu, the presidential spokesman :
“I pray Ghanaians would not allow their country to be used as a platform for the orchestration of nuisance on the African internet space.
“Nigeria is safer with the hypocrisy of Twitter. We shall have to improve on our methods for elimination of fake news on the information space.
“They just hate Nigeria because they know that the only country that can be the next African super power, fully democratic, highly mobile population and good working age population is Nigeria”
He concluded by claiming that “Twitter came to Ghana to target Nigerian market. They won’t admit they need us, but we know.”
Okay, since mr Shehu knows that Twitter is targeting Nigerian market which is the largest in Africa, but Nigeria and indeed Nigerians are bearing the consequences of thriving in a chaotic sociopolitical and economic atmosphere , while Ghanaians are reaping the fruit of their hard labor arising from their ability and capacity to reform as well as conform with international best practice: what is mallam Garba and his bosses doing about the missed opportunity by the army of the unemployed in Nigeria who have lost the opportunity of gaining employment to Ghana ?
While it is easy to engage in spin by standing the truth on its head , in the long run , reality often trump’s falsehood.
That is why we should be humble and not be so smug and cavalier as Lai Mohammed and Garba Shehu has been in their response to twitter’s decision to shun our country.
It is not only that the confrontational and combative attitude of both the minister of information and the president’s spokesman are disappointing, but also very dispiriting that they chose to excoriate the media,Nigerians and Twitter , than share with the masses , the plans if any, that the ministry and indeed the presidency have made or are making to persuade Twitter to reverse its decision to locate its African head office outside Nigeria.
Perhaps , if they tried to make some sense rather than spew nonsense as they have done , they might have succeeded in convincing Twitter and the rest of the world to change their negative perception of Nigeria. And they could have done so by making the case that although our beloved country may indeed be teetering on the brinks of socio-political collapse as reflected by the current state of anomie being experienced , concerted efforts are being made to remedy the situation.
The duo of the minister of information and presidential spokesman could have proceeded to present to Twitter’s management, Nigeria’s road map to reversing the misfortune foisted on the country.
They could have also made the case that the recent appointment of new military service chiefs to step up the fight against insurgents and also the change of lnspector General of Police, IGP with a new officer to curb and reverse the rising violent crimes in the country are all aimed at putting the country at even keel with global best standards. Hopefully, the highlighted military and police initiatives would accomplish the objective of stamping out or minimizing violent crimes by bandits currently ravaging the country and also ensuring that political oppression and human rights abuses are reduced if not eliminated.
Unfortunately, engaging in such salesmanship and civility may be too much work or boring for the duo. Perhaps, to them , it is easier to play on the emotions of Nigerians by making them feel like they are the architects of their misfortune, instead of apologizing to them, and also better to disparage and throw tantrums at Twitter, even if it is clear that such action has no positive value. Without a scintilla of doubt , Twitter is a potential job creator for our youths and also expected to be GDP booster for our economy if it were located in our country. But we seem to have lost that opportunity.
Meanwhile, no matter how hard he tries, Lai Mohammed can’t pretend not to know what marketing is about. I’m making that assumption and assertion basically because since he is implying in his statement that Nigerian media and the people of our great country are de-marketing the country, hence the nation is being sidelined by international investors such as Twitter, he must understand the concept of marketing.
So l expect Alhaji Mohamed and Mallam Shehu to be aware that for any company to invest in Nigeria or any other country for that matter, consultants are engaged to produce what is known as country report.
For that purpose, big corporations engage international consulting firms such as KPMG, Ernst & Young, PriceWaterhouse etc and local Nigerian consultancies like Philip Consulting led by Foluso Philip and Financial Derivatives driven by Bismarck Rewane amongst others .
So investors or entrepreneurs don’t determine where they invest or locate their head offices based on mere whims and caprices or political emotions or hear say which are the alternative realities that Lai Mohamed and Garba Shehu are strenuously trying to create to negatively energize the APC supporters base and make Nigerians that criticize bad behavior in government feel guilty. The truth is that the decision by any firm with solid organizational structure to berth or anchor its ship of business in any particular country is based on solid market research or study that has taken into consideration all factors, including business and sociopolitical dynamics.
That is in addition to the fact that most countries usually establish diplomatic ties with each another, except countries such as North Korea which is an autarky.
To foster diplomatic relationships , most of them have missions or embassies/high commissions in the countries that they are intrested in maintaining diplomatic relationships with.
And a host of such missions abound in Nigeria with offices in Abuja and Lagos.
One of the functions of diplomatic missions is to send information back to their home countries about their host countries. These include political and socio-economic intelligence sent through the famous diplomatic bags.
Also engaged in similar activities are the supranational agencies such as the United Nations ,UN agencies like the world bank, IMF, UNISEF etc also based in member countries from where they gather, analyze and synthesize information from their local environment.
What the above analogy indicates is that rather than relying on the mass media reports or social media posts by citizens of a country , as Lai Mohammed alleges, international investors have multiple sources of information about the local dynamics in the countries that they target for the location of their business.
To validate the case that l’m making and put the matter into context , consider the following comment by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Cardona Laing about insecurity in Nigeria “We are extremely concerned about the deteriorating security situation”. she added that , “Nigeria is facing a lot of problems everywhere.”
Below is what the UNHCR also had to say about Nigeria “Up to 65,000 Nigerians are on the move following a series of attacks by armed groups on Damasak town, in northeast Nigeria’s restive Borno State”.
The UN Refugee Agency, spokesperson Babar Baloch also told journalists in Geneva the following:
“Initial reports indicate that eight people were killed, and a dozen injured.”
Similarly, the Office For the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs( OCHA) had the following to say about Nigeria:
“Humanitarian assets have been targeted, including the destruction of at least five NGO offices and several NGO vehicles, a mobile storage unit, water tanks, a health outpost and a nutrition stabilization centre.”
The reports above reflect the reality and they contradict the picture which government spin doctors tried to paint and which is an attempt to hoodwink Nigerians.
Now , you would agree with me that Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn and other fringe instant messaging and information disseminating platforms that have become more efficient and effective means of information sharing, are big businesses.
In fact most of them are unicorn-valued at over a billion dollars.
Being Organizations with robust structures, the decision to locate their offices in any particular country is never based on glib talks in the social media or traditional media platforms on which the information minister is venting his spleen.
While one can understand the frustration of the minister, and the image maker for president Buhari, on the fact that the opportunities for jobs creation intrinsic in Twitter African headquarters being situated in our country are eluding Nigeria and Nigerians : the reality is that our dear country is punching below her weight by not observing globally acceptable political ethos. That is why our country is generating negative vibes on the matter of attracting foreign investments and location of regional offices by global corporations and supranational organizations.
That dismaying reality is also underscored by the fact that Nigeria is only mentioned in the same breath as Afghanistan, Syria , and Libya which are failed states of which sorrow tears and blood are their regular trade mark-apologies to fela Kuti , the Afrobeat maestro of blessed memory.
Despite being the nation with the largest population , biggest economy in Africa and number 8 in internet usage and connections in the world; major foreign investors that are politically conscious are reticent about considering our country which is caught in the vortex of religious Insurgency driven by boko haram , terrorism unleashed by ISWAP, and herdsmen-farmers conflicts as well as banditry, resulting in hundreds of thousands of people forced to live in Internally Displaced People Camp, IDP with over twenty thousand souls lost in the past decade. How such a country be an ideal space for establishing the headquarters of major corporations is best known only to information minister and Aso Rock mouth piece. What is obvious to most people and what we now know is that such a choice is certainly difficult for a politically sensitive outfit like Twitter, especially when a country with a tranquil atmosphere like Ghana is just one hour away by air plane flight?
Although Nigeria is officially not at war with any country, but herself , the general state of insecurity, plus the threat to civil liberties as evidenced by the alleged involvement of the army in brutality against civilians while dispersing #Endsars- youth protesters in October last year that ended in some tragedies , make the country look like a war zone.
And all these negative occurrences are what are stacked up and crystallized into the negative testimony which are likely what helped to seal Nigeria’s fate against being a preferred destination for the headquarters of Twitter in the African continent .
Hopefully, before Twitter actualizes the decision to berth her ship in Ghana , chances are that Nigeria might have cleaned up her act. Although, l’m not holding my breath because the likelihood of such happening is quite quaint.
However, in the event that Nigeria truly loses Twitter, perhaps the country would’ve learnt a few lessons to enable her be prepared to be the ideal location for the anticipated Google plan to also berth in Africa.
But that won’t happen if the authorities remain nonchalant and ambivalent about making Nigeria a bride to foreign investors seeking business marriages in a continent with about 54 countries as Lai Mohamed and Garba Shehu’s response to Twitter’s Jack Dorsey’s disappointing news seem to portray.
Gone are the days when Nigeria was one of the fastest growing economies in the world and as such our dear nation was being considered for addition into the list of emerging economic power houses in the world alongside countries like Brazil , Russia, lndia, and China to form BRIC Countries-a term coined by Goldman Sachs in 2001 for emerging markets that would become global leaders.
Comparing and contrasting the socioeconomic outlook of Nigeria in the past decade with
the current toxic socioeconomic and political atmosphere that makes it look like a killing field , I can’t phantom why the mass media and the masses are being made the scape goat by our minister of information .
That’s because even the deaf and dumb can see how security , law, order and justice have taken flight from our country lately .
Arising from the above , information minister Lai Mohammed’s charge against Nigerian media and Nigerians is rather egregious and Garba Shehu’s parody of Twitter and Ghana is unbecoming and uncharitable .
As we may recall, (to borrow an American slang) Twitter takes no prisoners.
To demonstrate its zero tolerance for breach of its rules , it recently blocked access to the platform by then president of the USA , Donald J Trump, the leader of the free world for spreading false news about coronavirus pandemic and sowing negative seeds about the fidelity of the 2020 elections in his country that he lost to Joe Biden .
Having led the charge , other social media platforms followed suit in sanctioning an in incumbent USA president.
Also , this is not the first time that Nigeria’s loss became Ghana’s gain .
When Barack Obama, as a seating president of the USA visited Africa , Nigeria was not on the list of countries with the privilege to host him. But Ghana , the small country whose population is a little over that of lagos state, hosted the first African American president, July 10-11, 2009.
Same applies to when it was time for African countries to seek and obtain independence from the British colonialists. Again, while Ghana obtained her independence in 1958, Nigeria received independence from Britain two years after-1960.
There is no consolation for Nigerians even if they wanted to reduce the embarrassment of Ghana always being preferred by international businesses and politicians.
That’s because despite her relatively smaller size compared to Nigeria, (31m versus Nigeria’s 200m people) consider the latest victory of Ghana over Nigeria as reflected by the choice of that country as the location for the headquarters of the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA.
It is clearly another master stroke for Ghana .
Reportedly, the country’s presidents, particularly the current one, Nana Akufo-Addoh personally goes out of his way to woo foreign investors. The same manner in which, Peter Obi, ex governor of Anambra state , reportedly traveled all the way to the headquarters of the beer brewing company , Kronenburg, in Strasbourg , France to convince the management to locate their brewery facility in Onitsha, Anambra state instead of Asaba, delta state that was initially the preferred location.
The truth is that our country has not had the good fortune of being led by a development oriented president that would be focused on building more wealth for our country. Instead we have been suffocating under the rulership of those who want to share the money as opposed to creating wealth by adopting innovative and dynamic strategies .
It is appropriate at this juncture to share my personal experience about the strenuous efforts that l made trying to get the Bosch Automotive of Germany to locate its west African operations office in Nigeria.
About a decade and half years ago , my firm Inspire Auto Services Ltd , secured the partnership of Bosch Automotive of Germany as an authorized Bosch Cars Services operator in Nigeria. The approval was sought from its office in South Africa which paired us with an existing partner in Nigeria that goes by the name Hydrotrans with focus on Diesel engine business which is basically about trucks and we got authorization for cars repair.
Along the line , l discovered that Bosch also had an office in Morocco through which lnspire Auto Services ltd was required to direct its requests for importation of automotive parts into Nigeria which l felt was not right given the size of Nigerian market compared to Morocco .
To cut long story short, following concerted efforts that l made to persuade the Dubai regional office covering the Middle East and Africa markets of the automobile parts manufacturing firm originating from Germany, Bosch was constantly pressured to set up a major office and appoint a country representative for Nigeria ,the largest market in Africa. The proposition was justified with facts and figures , and they finally acceded to the request in 2014.
But just as the office located in Landmark building at lsaac John’s street in lkeja, lagos was about to commence business , there was Ebola pandemic outbreak in Nigeria, 2014 and the Bosch office which had been established was forced to relocate to Ghana temporarily.
But owing to the dexterity of Ghanaian business development officials who have a knack for successfully pitching their country to would be investors that they track and trap with incentives such as the tranquil and peaceful business environment that the country offers , Bosch has since remained a permanent business fixture in Ghana serving as a bolster to that country’s economy .
And until recently , Nigerian office was reporting to Ghana from where automotive parts imports into Nigeria were processed and technical services rendered . That is clear indication of how aggressive Ghanaian authorities can be with respect to attracting and retaining foreign investments.
Unlike Nigerian officials that have made several trips to the Silicon Valley in San Francisco, California, USA, visiting most of the high tech firms located there, without succeeding in attracting any of them to Nigeria, Ghanaians , only make their country investors- friendly by adopting or conforming with global best practice in politics; engaging in economic reforms and observing the rule of law as well as showing respect for human rights.
Although , Nigeria hosts the Economic Community Of West African Countries, (ECOWAS) secretariat, Cote De l’voir is the home to African Development Bank , (ADB)while Egypt is the headwaters of African Export-Import bank, (Afri-Exim) fortuitously, Nigerians are the current CEOs of both ADB and Afri-Exim Bank.
And while the CEOs tour of duty is for a specific span of time since they are tenured, but the banks remain permanently in those countries serving as economic bulwark respectively.
Now ,many reasons can be adduced for Nigeria’s lackadaisical attitude towards attracting foreign investors.
Chief amongst them is the attitude of entitlement often exhibited by Nigerian officials which is derived from the assumption that since the country has the largest population in Africa and also boasts of the largest market in the continent , as well as being oil/gas rich, any and every business organization planning on coming to Africa, would naturally gravitate towards Nigeria.
Unbeknownst to such Nigerian government officials with exaggerated impressions about the strategic importance of our country without investing commensurate efforts to harness the great potentials , one of the fastest growing business and tourism destinations that is also the headquarters of myriads of global corporations from where they manage their Middle East and African operations, is Dubai in the United Arab Emirates , UAE.
The secret of Dubai’s role as the foremost business and tourism hub in Africa and Middle East is that the authorities actually go out of their way to woo businesses to locate their headquarters there. They even incentivize potential investors with provision of infrastructure, generous tax breaks etc.
With more businesses becoming more politically conscious like Twitter , information minister Lai Mohamed and presidential image maker Garba Shehu should brace up for more cold shoulders from more big businesses looking to anchor their offices in the African continent.
One only needs to look at what is happening in the state of Georgia in the USA where the governor and essentially white legislators in the Republican Party led government passed a bill that constrains citizens-particularly black and brown communities from engaging in the civic duty of voting during elections. It is a legislation which president Biden has tagged “Jim Crow in the 21st century”
The state of Georgia is already receiving flaks and punishment for the perfidy by the corporate world. This includes Coca-Cola and United airlines, both of which are headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
Even the sporting world- Major League Baseball, MLB , has also threatened to move its All Stars Game out of Atlanta if the anti voting rights bill targeting black and brown communities is not rescinded.
So, it is likely that Twitter’s cold shoulder to Nigeria may be the beginning of the corporate world’s involvement in politics in the manner that shareholders of major businesses about a outlet of decades ago started prevailing on the management of the equity funds firms in which they have stakes not to invest in countries, products or services that engage in, or are associated with unwholesome practices.
In other words Environment, Social & Governance , ESG issues are currently being put in the front burner or front loaded by businesses.
If our country continues to operate democracy in the breach and remain a gangster paradise that it now appears to be , l’m afraid Twitter may not be the last multinational corporation to thump its nose at Nigeria.
And while there is no need to gloat over the consequences of such dire possibilities, we need to whip our self into line as a country, to avoid the negative ramifications , so that foreign investors would not start avoiding Nigeria like a plague as a result of her non conformity with democratic and governance best practice.
That is the reality and present danger that l would like the minister of information and the spokesman of the president to ponder as we enter this new era of businesses and businessmen/women getting more environmentally, socially and politically conscious.

Why we held town hall meeting on national security–Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said the recent town hall meeting on national security in Kaduna was to address the nation’s security challenges and the call for secession.

Mohammed said this while fielding questions at a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) flagship interview programme, NANForum, in Abuja.

NAN recalls that the Federal Government through the Ministry of Information had on April 8 convened the town hall meeting on national security.

Mohammed said apart from the security challenges being experienced in the country, the call for secession had become more pronounced and there was the need to take drastic measures to address it.

He also said the town hall meeting was aimed at building elite consensus on the indispensability of the unity of the country, its security and peaceful coexistence.

“Nigeria is facing security challenges, we have been battling with Boko Haram for 10 years, we have been battling with herdsmen -farmers clashes for about six years.

“We have also been handling the issue of banditry, cultism and the likes but why we became concerned and felt we had to organise a town hall meeting was as a result of these security challenges.

” The call for secession became more and more pronounced, at that point in time, we felt it was necessary to have a town hall meeting and see if we can build an elite consensus on indispensability of the unity, security and the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria.

“When Nigeria has been on this kind of cross road, we have always tried to get elite consensus to agree on the unity of Nigeria, agree on its security and agree on the need for all of us to live together peacefully,” he said.

The minister noted that though the last town hall meeting was the 18th his ministry had held since he came on board the Kaduna forum on national security was unique.

He said the meeting was well attended by people from all walks of life with panelists drawn from the academia, private sector and civil society.

The minister added that the town hall meeting, which was robust, gave government the opportunity to hear from the other side of the society.

“Another unique thing is the colour of the attendees in attendance; not just eight ministers, there were governors of Kaduna State and his deputy and governors of Zamfara and Ekiti sent representatives.

“We had representatives of Miyyeti Allah, we had representatives of PANDEF, security chiefs were there, traditional rulers, bishops and Imams.

“We also had women organisations and all major stakeholders that you will expect when discussing the issue of security and national unity,” he said.

Mohammed said it was made clear from the beginning that the town hall meeting would not be a talk shop.

He stated that all discussants were tasked to come up with implementable resolutions, adding that stakeholders did not only highlight security challenges but also proffered solutions.

NAN recalls that the discussants at the event included Dr Jibrin Ibrahim, Prof. Saka Nuru, Ibukun Awosika, Prof. Chudi Uwazuruike and Prof. Kokunre Eghafona.LAI

  • Lai Mohammed to Nigerians: Ignore secessionists; they’ll be first to run away when trouble starts

Lai Mohammed to Nigerians: Ignore secessionists; they’ll be first to run away when trouble starts

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Sunday said that the Federal Government was working hard to improve national security and prevent all secession tendencies.

Mohammed, who spoke on Sunday in Lagos when he appeared on Bond FM radio programme, “Ibi Abasede”, urged Nigerians not to listen to promoters of secession.

Speaking specifically on issues around security, Mohammed said that Federal Government’s efforts in that respect necessitated the Town Hall meeting on security held on April 8, in Kaduna.

The meeting brought stakeholders together to chart a way forward, he explained.

Mohammed said that recommendations from the meeting, which had the theme, “Setting Benchmarks for Enhanced Security and National Unity in Nigeria’’, would be presented to the Federal Executive Council and state governors on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

The minister pointed out that what united Nigeria was more important than those issues threatening its continued existence.

“We were moved by security issues around the country and called for a meeting of all relevant stakeholders on April 8, in Kaduna.

“That we have ethnicity issues is not new. IPOB, Boko Haram and farmer-herders clashes are not new; all we must do is to look for the way forward.

“We are aware of them, the government is working. Secession is not the way out of our challenges. You don’t cure a headache by beheading the patient.

“The things that unite us in Nigeria are more than what separates us,” he said.

The minister said that the stakeholders at the Town Hall meeting in Kaduna came up with some recommendations to further secure and unite the country toward progress.

Mohammed said that eight ministers, lawmakers, traditional leaders, religious leaders, scholars and civil society organisations, opposition parties and security chiefs personally attended the meeting.

He said that the stakeholders recommended supremacy of the law, empowerment of the Police and other security agencies, as well as the need for political restructuring.

According to him, all the stakeholders at the meeting were united against secession, opting for a restructured and stronger nation.

“We cannot do these without constitutional amendment,” he said.

Mohammed said that the stakeholders also recommended that all Nigerian children of school age should be in schools, noting that most recruits into insurgency and banditry were out-of-school children.

According to him, if the children of the poor are hungry and not educated, the rich will not be able to sleep.

He added that the meeting also recommended the recruitment of more Policemen with more training to all security personnel.

He added that the meeting also recommended decentralisation, restructuring and reorganisation of the judiciary as well as training and retraining of Judges.

“We cannot do these without constitutional amendment,” he said.

Mohammed said that the stakeholders also recommended that all Nigerian children of school age should be in schools, noting that most recruits into insurgency and banditry were out-of-school children.

“The stakeholders also recommended that security operatives be equipped with modern equipment to boost efficiency necessary to win the trust and confidence of the people.”

The minister advised religious leaders and traditional leaders to encourage what the Constitution says about inter-ethnic marriages to forestall secession.

“Those who support separation and secession will be the first to run away when any problem starts.

“We should not listen to them as many of them have about four passports of other countries,” Mohammed said.

He said that the stakeholders recommended state Police and the need for the National Assembly and state assemblies to support it “because all security is local”.

Mohammed said that the meeting also recommended that traditional leaders should be encouraged to perform their assigned roles in line with the 1979 constitution.

He said that the group also recommended autonomy to local governments and to allow their statutory allocation to go directly to them for security, education and infrastructural development at the grassroots.

“The stakeholders also recommended the establishment of ranches and grazing reserves with necessary amenities such as water, education and healthcare facilities for humans and livestocks,” Mohammed further said.

The minister, in the course of the programme, answered many questions from listeners who monitored the programme.

  • BREAKING: FG orders GoTv, Startimes to migrate to FreeTV platform

BREAKING: FG orders GoTv, Startimes to migrate to FreeTV platform

The Federal Government says it has directed two PayTv platforms – GoTv and Startimes – to migrate their signals from self-carrying to any of the two licensed FreeTv signal distributors.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja, said the directive was in line with the Digital Switch Over (DSO) process.

DSO is the process of transiting from analogue to digital terrestrial broadcasting and the country has set April 29 for the resumption of the roll out of the second phase in the remaining 31 states.

The first phase of the roll out had covered the Federal Capital Territory and the five states of Plateau, Kaduna, Kwara, Osun and Enugu.

According to the minister, the laws of the land recognises a single frequency network which is being operated by two licensed signal distributors – Integrated Television Services (ITS) and Pinnacle Communications.

He said the two PayTv – Startimes and GoTv – which are currently carrying their respective signals, is in negation of the law and must migrate to any of the licensed signal distributors of their choice.

“We have directed National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to ask Gotv and Startimes to go to either Pinnacle of ITS.

“They cannot carry their signals and that is the only way the licensed signal distributors can survive,’’ he said

The minister gave an assurance that with the approval of N9.4 billion by the Federal Government and the setting up of a 14-member ministerial task force to drive the DSO process the remaining 31 states would be successfully and effectively covered.

He said the DSO would enable Nigerians have the opportunity to have choices of many TV stations as well as have access to quality pictures and programmes with little annual cost and no monthly subscription.

Mohammed said the plan for every state the DSO is being rolled out is to cover at least 70 per cent population coverage with Digital Terrestrial Transmission (DTT) while the remaining areas would be covered by Direct To Home (DTH).

He pledged that no part of the country would be left out without DSO signal before the final Analogue Switch Off

Speaking on contents on the FreeTv platform, the minister said the government would set up Local Content Development Fund to assist talented young artists and content developers as well as enable budding stations to thrive.

He said part of the fund would also be used to assist veteran actors and notable celebrities to procure special licenses to either have their own channels or programmes.

School kidnapping takes place in other developed countries —Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has averred that the kidnapping of students takes place in other developed countries, adding that the United States also experience school kidnapping.

Mohammed made this known on Monday while featuring on Channels Television’s ‘News Night’

He also maintained that the government would not pay ransom to secure the release of the kidnapped students and members of staff of Government Science College in Kagara, Niger State. He added that the government was employing kinetic and non-kinetic means to ensure the release of the abductees.

Mohammed said, “Even in the most developed countries of this world, school kidnapping takes place. Last year, in the US, we all witnessed three of four school kidnappings, and that is in probably one of the most developed countries in the world.

“The thing about terrorism is that the terrorists don’t live by your own rules and they are especially interested in soft targets. They know that what is going to get global attention is kidnapping school children.

“We must be careful; we can’t turn all our schools into barracks. What is important is intelligence gathering, surveillance rather than the physical presence of the soldiers or policemen.

“We are dealing with people who don’t think like me and you, we are dealing with people who don’t have any rules of engagement, we are dealing with people whose motivation is completely different from mine and yours. And anywhere in the world, this is how terrorists operate but the most important thing is to learn from what is happening and adapt.”

How Nigeria survived, exited second recession despite COVID-19 – Minister

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says Nigeria did not exit the latest recession by accident, but with “hardwork, foresight and deliberate planning by government.”

The minister stated this on Saturday when he featured on a monitored Channels Television programme.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Nigeria slipped into recession for the second time in four years in the midst of COVID-19 after the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) declined for the second consecutive quarter in 2020 (Q2 and Q3)

The economy, however, came out of the recession in the fourth quarter as growth in agriculture and telecommunications had offset a sharp drop in oil production.

The GDP grew 0.11 per cent in the three months through December from a year earlier, compared with a decline of 3.6 per cent in the third quarter as announced by the National Bureau of Statistics.

Mohammed said exiting the recession occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic was not accidental.

He recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had last year set up the Economic Sustainability Committee which came up with Economic Sustainability Plans to mitigate the effects of COVID-19.

“When you talk of GDP, it is the total sum of the value of your services and goods. Clearly, if there is a lockdown, you cannot go to work, and there is bound to be a recession.

“What we did was that we pumped money into the system by creating jobs.

“The first is the1,000 jobs through public works given to each local government and we have 774 Local Government Councils.

“So, we have 774,000 workforce engaged on public works like road and this goes a lot in boosting the economy,’’ he said.

Mohammed said government equally introduced the Survival Fund which the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment supervised to prevent loss of jobs and create new ones.

The Survival Fund, according to the minister, was to ensure that Small and Medium Scale Enterprises did not collapse.

“With Survival Fund, we asked for companies that employ between five and 50 people and we gave them payroll support for about three months.

“About 500,000 MSMEs benefitted from this programme,’’ he said.

The minister said the government also gave One-Off-Grant whereby N10,000 was given to each of 233,000 artisans, including hairdressers and mechanics.

He said some other programmes introduced by government included Conditional Cash Transfer with 3.6 million beneficiaries as well as N-POWER, TRADERMONI, FARMERMONI, MARKETMONI which reaches millions of people.

Besides the survival plans and economic sustainability plans, he said the government is investing heavily in infrastructure and employing more people.

The minister said that the government is doing more with less resources, adding that the effects of the pandemic was not peculiar to the country but a global affair.

He said no fewer than 40 million Americans are now out jobs and some cannot pay their mortgage due to the pandemic.

“In Nigeria, our major sources of revenue are crude oil and taxation.

“Crude oil is just inching up but we also suffered a decrease in production from 1.72 million barrels a day to 1.67 million barrels daily losing about half a million barrels daily.

“In the last 12 months, officers from grade level 12 and below are working from home and this has a significant effect on the economy.

“In spite of these, we still have to contend with other major challenges like insurgency, banditry and kidnapping; therefore we must understand and admit that the country is going through a lot,’’ he said.

The minister also identified the challenge of population explosion, explaining that being a delicate issue to legislate on, government can only deploy advocacy for its control.

  • Why we cannot allow #OccupyLekkiTollGate to happen – FG

Why we cannot allow #OccupyLekkiTollGate to happen – FG

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said never again will the Federal Government allow to happen the kind of violence that was perpetrated across the country during the EndSars protest last October.

Lai Mohammed stated this in Abuja on Thursday while addressing a press conference, where he stressed there is intelligence at the disposal of the FG for some subversive elements to cause violence by hijacking the ”Occupy Lekki Toll Gate” protest planned for Saturday, February 13th 2021.

The text of the press conference addressed by Lai Mohammed reads: “Good morning gentlemen and thank you for honouring our invitation once again.

“As you may be aware, some EndSars proponents have given notice of their plan to return to Lagos – Lekki Toll Gate to be specific – on Saturday, February 13th 2021. The ”Occupy Lekki Toll Gate” flyers have been circulating online, with the proponents threatening that ”Lagos will burn” again.

“Let me be clear: While peaceful protests are the constitutional rights of Nigerians, violent protests are not. At this time, the chances that any peaceful protest will be hijacked are very high. Based on the intelligence at the disposal of the Federal Government, some Nigerian activists have linked up with others outside Nigeria, including subversive elements, with a view to destabilizing the country. We cannot and must not allow this to happen.

“Never again will the Federal Government allow the kind of violence that was perpetrated across the country under the guise of the EndSars last October. Never again will anyone or group be allowed to destroy cities or to kill and maim innocent citizens, including security agents, under any guise.

“The EndSars campaign last October started as a peaceful protest against police brutality. As a government that believes in the constitutionally-guaranteed right of citizens to engage in peaceful protests, the Federal Government did nothing to hinder the protests for as long as they remained peaceful. Not only that, the Federal Government moved swiftly to accede to the five-point demands by the EndSars campaigners which are:

    i) Immediate release of all arrested protesters.

ii) Justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families.

iii) Setting up an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of police misconduct within 10 days.

iv) In line with the new Police Act, psychological evaluation and retraining (to be confirmed by an independent body) of all disbanded SARS officers before they can be redeployed.

    v) And increase police salary so that they are adequately compensated for protecting the lives and property of citizens.

“Unfortunately, despite the acceptance of the demands, the protesters misread the Federal Government’s respect for the rule of law and defiantly continued to demonstrate and occupy a public facility, even after a curfew was declared by the Lagos State Government. This led to a series of actions that culminated in the hijacking of the protests by hoodlums, who perpetrated unimaginable violence in Lagos and other cities across the country.

“The trillion-Naira destruction of Lagos, in particular, remains too fresh a wound. Hundreds, including the youth, lost their livelihoods to the wanton attacks in Lagos. The burnt wreckage of public buses that were wantonly set ablaze by rampaging hoodlums remain in their positions as a sad and gory reminder of the unprecedented attacks. The city is still reeling from the war-like destruction.

“For those who are using justice as an alibi for another round of destruction, let me say this: As we speak, the Judicial Panels of Inquiry, set up across the country to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra-judicial killings, with a view to delivering justice for all victims of the dissolved SARS and other police units, are continuing with the assignments. In Lagos, the Judicial Panel of Inquiry has an added responsibility of investigating the incident of October 20th at the Lekki Toll Gate.

“Like we have said many times, anyone who has any information on the alleged shooting or purported massacre at the Lekki Toll Gate, including the names and addresses of those who were purportedly killed, should head to the Panel to give it such information. This is how to enhance the search for justice, not by rabble rousing or engaging in media shows.

“However, any further resort to violence in the name of EndSars will not be tolerated this time. The security agents are ready for any eventuality. A situation in which six soldiers and 37 policemen were murdered in cold blood by hoodlums will not repeat itself. The attack, looting and razing of 269 private and public property will not happen again. The killing of 57 civilians will not be re-enacted.

“We therefore strongly warn those who are planning to re-occupy Lekki Toll Gate on Saturday to desist. We know that many of those who have been loudest on social media in advertising the plan to reconvene in Lagos on Saturday are not even in Nigeria. They are elsewhere around the world fanning the embers of violence and inciting gullible people back home. No one should fall for their antics.

“No government anywhere will allow a repeat of the kind of destruction, killing and maiming wrought by the hijackers of EndSars protests last year. After all, only one policeman – (plus four others) – was killed in the invasion of the US Capitol in January, yet the FBI has continued to hunt down and prosecute the perpetrators. No life is more important than the other.

“The Federal Government is also keenly watching the role being played by the various social media platforms in this renewed clamour for violence in the country. Recall that the social media platforms that eagerly nudged on the EndSars protesters, until the situation got out of hand, are the same ones that quickly pulled the plug on even their own President when the chips were down in their own country. I hope we have all learnt our lessons. If we allow them to destroy our country, we will bear the brunt.

“Gentlemen, I thank you for your kind attention. I will now take your questions on the issues that I have just addressed”.
