EPL: Lampard accepts to coach Chesea as interim manager

Homeboy Frank Lampard has accepted to coach Chelsea Football Club on an interim capacity all through the end of the season.

Recall that Graham Potter was sacked on Sunday evening following defeat to Aston Villa as the Blues slipped into the bottom half of the Premier League table.

The west London outfit have been heavily linked with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique. But, with Todd Boehly eager to replace Bruno Saltor ahead of the weekend, it appears that Lampard will see out the remainder of the season.

Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle to appoint the Blues hero as interim head coach until end of season. Previously when Lampard replaced Maurizio Sarri in 2019, he pulled together a five-man coaching team which consisted of Jody Morris, his assistant, Eddie Newton, Chris Jones, Joe Edwards and Henrique Hilario.

Chelsea are occupying the 11th position but will slug it out with Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League

Lampard reacts after Iwobi clash with Everton fans

Everton manager Frank Lampard has reacted to a bust-up between away fans and Alex Iwobi at the end of defeat at Bournemouth.

The Toffees were beaten 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium, with the way fans making their unhappiness with their side’s performance clear following the game. Lampard was forced to drag his players away from their own supporters as they angrily demonstrated with his team.

Iwobi also saw his shirt thrown back at him after sending it into the stands, with a wall of security forming a barrier. Lampard has defended the Everton fans for their angry reaction and insisted that the incident with Iwobi was merely a “misunderstanding”.

“I think there was a bit of a misunderstanding, Alex [Iwobi] had some friends that he was concerned about that were sort of at the front of the fans, there was nothing in that, and the players just have to accept the fans have a right to voice their opinions,” he said.

“The fans have a right to be disappointed. They have come down here twice this week and seen poor performances. And before that we had been going OK and then they see performances they don’t like.

“So when we are pleased they are happy after Palace, when we are pleased that they give us a welcome, we have to understand that they can voice their opinions and their opinions are right today.”

EPL: Gerrard’s men defeat Frank Lampard’s Everton

Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia scored to get Aston Villa’s Premier League campaign up and running with victory over Everton as Steven Gerrard got one over on his old midfield rival Frank Lampard.

The two were facing each other as managers for the first time after years of battles on the pitch in games between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Both had overseen losses in their Premier League openers and it was Gerrard’s side who claimed their first win of the season with a dominant display at Villa Park.

The home side looked on it from the start and got the breakthrough midway through the first half when Ollie Watkins, making his first start of the season, found strike partner Ings inside the box and he turned sharply before firing clinically into the back of the net.

Everton, once again playing without a recognised striker, did not manage a shot on target in the first half, although they did see an Anthony Gordon effort ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside.

Substitute Buendia saw a deflected shot cleared off the line as Vila pressed for a second, which duly arrived in the closing stages when Buendia stabbed in following a good move.

Lucas Digne turned a cross into his own net immediately after to give Everton hope, and they staged a late rally as Gordon was twice denied by Martinez, but Villa held firm to take the three points.

  • We don’t need tiki-taka players at Everton – Lampard

We don’t need tiki-taka players at Everton – Lampard

Everton boss Frank Lampard has detailed the type of player he wants to sign this summer.

The squad is not set for a few weeks off before returning to training on July 1st ahead of the new term, with Lampard himself set for some time away from Finch Farm too to spend time with family. However, he’s focused on one particular aspect when he gets his squad back for pre-season.

When asked about his next aim, the manager revealed: “To get the players fit and robust. Our injury record when I came in and what we’ve had is one that affects you. Two big centre halves out for a big period of time, Dominic – so each individual case when you look at it is not easy to analyse.

“I came in in January, and there’s not things you can always do when you’re playing every few days. But it has to be more planned.

“We have to be strong and robust. It’s Everton, we’re not a tika-taka team, we have to be strong.”

He added: “To improve, in a lot of ways. We want to play, the way we’ve played in the last month was fantastic but it’s been a certain type of football. We’ve played a lot of big teams who have had more possession.

“We want to look at how we can be a little bit better in possession. Some of that will be the squad and recruitment, others will be how we work in pre-season.

“You’re always starting to think about those things, you can never stand still or relax in this game. There’s reasons we are where we are and there’s reasons we just about stayed up.

“It’s very important that after that break we get to work.”

EPL: Lampard’s Everton defeat Man Utd to boost survival hopes

Everton secured what could prove a priceless victory in their battle to avoid relegation as lacklustre Manchester United were beaten at Goodison Park.

Frank Lampard’s side were plunged into even deeper crisis when they lost at fellow strugglers Burnley in midweek to leave them facing the prospect of dropping into the bottom three this weekend if results went against them.

In a game low on quality but high in tension, Everton’s victory came courtesy of Anthony Gordon’s 27th-minute drive, which took a heavy deflection off United captain Harry Maguire to leave keeper David de Gea wrong-footed.

Everton keeper Jordan Pickford made two important early saves from Marcus Rashford and a vital late block from Cristiano Ronaldo, but there was rarely any sense of siege as United lacked urgency, failing to break through in another blow to their hopes of making the Premier League’s top four.

  • Lampard reveals Guardiola motivational message after Chelsea sack

Lampard reveals Guardiola motivational message after Chelsea sack

Everton manager Frank Lampard admits he received a motivational message from Pep Guardiola after his sacking by Chelsea.

When Lampard was sacked by Chelsea in January 2021, Guardiola was one of the first people to get in touch to offer support.

Manchester City’s manager left a voice note, complimenting him on the work he had done at Stamford Bridge and how it would guarantee him opportunities in the future.

The pair had exchanged numbers a few years earlier – Lampard had been to watch City train – but didn’t have anything other than an amicable relationship, so the words that Guardiola left were not just unexpected, they were huge fillip for the 43-year-old.

“I’ve a huge respect for Pep,” said Lampard.

“I went up against him as a player, his teams were incredible; so to have that contact with him which, in all honesty, he instigated was a great thing. It gave me a real eye opener into what top managers and top people do.

“I think Alex Ferguson is a great reference point. He not only was one of the greatest managers of all time but he also had a real sentiment and emotional factor which means he has a strong link and support to any other coach, manager and person trying to walk anywhere near his path.

“The greats have that. They have real people skills. So when Pep contacted me or when we’ve had brief discussions on different matters, it is something I really appreciate. I look forward to seeing him in those terms.”

  • Marcos Alonso explains bust-up with Lampard at Chelsea

Marcos Alonso explains bust-up with Lampard at Chelsea

Chelsea left-back, Marcos Alonso has revealed what happened between him and former manager Frank Lampard when both men clashed in 2020.

It all started when Alonso was substituted at half time during Chelsea’s 3-3 draw with West Brom in September 2020.

And instead of sitting with the other players in the dugout, the Spaniard opted to go back to Chelsea’s changing room.

Lampard was furious with the left-back for refusing to wait in the dugout and gave him a dressing down in front of his teammates.

“The manager didn’t take it well but I explained everything that happened. He thought I left before the end of the game but I told him no,” Alonso told The Athletic.

Alonso said he was watching the game upstairs and with five minutes remaining until the final whistle, West Brom security asked him to leave the place and straight away he went to the changing room.

“Then when the referee blew the whistle, I went to the team bus before the team got back.

“It was not with any bad intention that I wanted to leave… I was not happy, of course, with how the game went and everything, but it was not my intention to do that,” he said.

  • Lampard ‘very excited’ after Everton appointment confirmed

Lampard ‘very excited’ after Everton appointment confirmed

Premier League club Everton have appointed Frank Lampard as new manager.

The former England midfielder has agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract – until June 2024 – and will take charge for the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Brentford at Goodison Park on Saturday 5 February.

“It is a huge honour for me to represent and manage a club of Everton’s size and tradition and I am very excited,” Lampard told evertontv.

“I always had a great feeling when I played against Everton.

“There are certain clubs in England that when you go into the stadium, you can feel the passion the fans have for their team.

    “It is very intense

“I found it difficult when it was against me and I am very much looking forward to representing that on their [supporters’] side. I will bring the same passion they give when they watch their team.

“I think Everton is a unique club in that you can really understand what the fans want to see. The first thing they want is fight and desire and that must always be our baseline.

“I knew I had to work overly hard [as a player] to try to be the best I could. I’m the same as a manager and I want to see that in my team.

“Beyond that, you need the qualities to play good football. I want to see a team that are confident in possession, that can control games with possession, and be very exciting to watch at the top end of the pitch.

“We need to be a team that’s very active… crossing and getting shots on goal and staying in the other half of the pitch. When you don’t have the ball, you must be aggressive.

“And management is not just the tactical side – it’s how you make the squad and individuals feel. I will try to be myself, very personable and close to the players, and set up a team to play good football and win games.”

  • Everton offer Frank Lampard manager’s job

Everton offer Frank Lampard manager’s job

Everton have offered their vacant managerial position to former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.

Lampard, 43, has been out of work for a year after being sacked as Chelsea manager last January, leaving the Blues after 18 months in charge.

Portuguese Vitor Pereira and caretaker Duncan Ferguson also had their second interviews for the job on Friday, but the club decided to move for Lampard, says BBC Sport.

Rafael Benitez was sacked after winning just one of his last 13 games.

The former Liverpool manager lasted less than seven months and a side lacking in confidence lies 16th in the Premier League, just six points above the relegation zone.

Pereira initially looked set to be offered the job after holding “very positive” talks and said club officials were “enthusiastic of what I proposed to them”.

But graffiti daubed on Everton’s Goodison Park home this week opposed the move and read ‘Pereira out, Lampard in’.

And on Wednesday night around 100 fans held a protest at Goodison at the way the club is being run.

Former Toffee Wayne Rooney was also in contention for the role but turned down the chance to talk with Everton as he wants to stay at Championship strugglers Derby.

Ex-Rams boss Lampard held talks about becoming Norwich boss in November before dropping out of the running, with the Canaries appointing Dean Smith instead.

He could be appointed as Everton manager by the time they next play on 5 February against Brentford in the FA Cup.

  • Frank Lampard reveals day he feared Chelsea sack

Frank Lampard reveals day he feared Chelsea sack

Frank Lampard has revealed when he knew he was in trouble as Chelsea manager.

The Blues legend was fired in January 2021 and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who went on to win the Champions League last season.

And Lampard says he started to feel concerned after losing 3-1 to Arsenal on Boxing Day.

“It was a really good feeling. Then come the end of December we lose some games and that can change pretty quick,” Lampard said on Gary Neville’s The Overlap.

“We went to Arsenal on Boxing Day and lost and played poorly. There hadn’t been that many games in my time at Chelsea where you could say we were off it today. Miles off it.

“When we went to Arsenal and got beaten pretty well, I knew that good feeling from before had gone. I could see it in the performance. Then we had (Manchester) City the next game.

“At Chelsea, it is understandable, I’m not crying my eyes out, but you lose two games on the bounce like that people start talking about it straight away. I could sense the feeling of that.

“I think we lost three games in seven and at the end of January I left.”

Lampard added: “I could feel it. I was sort of being told some things that it might happen. Rumours.

“Chelsea is such a big club and it has had huge success with it – it changes managers so it doesn’t take long for people to jump onto that ship. It would have been stupid of me to just listen to that, but I’m not silly. You listen to those things and just keep working.

“The next morning (after losing to Luton Town) I got a message from Bruce Buck the chairman of the club saying ‘Can you move training and come and meet us in the boardroom?’

“Once the club makes that decision there is no nice way. I knew straight away.

“There is no nice way to do it. There may be different ways and etiquette to doing it, but at the end of the day the result is the same.

“When I met Bruce and Marina it was very cordial. I knew what was coming. Not at the time, but you are thankful for the period, you understand what it is. They are going to move on and there is nothing you can do there.

“When you take the job you understand that call may come. At Chelsea, it probably will come unless you win back-to-back titles all the time and that was never going to happen.”
