Lampard ponders change in penalty-taker after Jorginho miss

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard admits he may seek to change penalty takers after Timo Werner’s success last night.

Jorginho has missed two of his last four spot-kicks after hitting the post with the game goalless during Wednesday night’s 4-0 win in Krasnodar.

The Italian had been substituted by the time Chelsea were awarded a second penalty and Werner dispatched with a thumping effort on 76 minutes.

Lampard insists he has no issue with Jorginho’s hop-skip technique, but he could not confirm if the midfielder will continue on penalty duty.

“Jorginho has had an incredibly successful run of scoring penalties in his career, especially at Chelsea,” said the Blues boss.

“If you take that many penalties, as he does, there can be periods when you miss one or two, I’ve experienced that as a player. I’ve got no problem at all with his style of taking them because of the success he’s had.

“But I know Timo Werner is very capable of taking penalties, as we saw. We have other players that can too. So I will talk to the players to see how we move forward, but we have very good penalty takers at the club.”

Rudiger given chance for Chelsea return after Lampard heart-to-heart

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has buried the hatchet with central defender Antonio Rudiger, according to Tribalfootball.

The German was out of favour at the club and was likely to move in the summer.

But no transfer materialised, and now the Daily Mail reports Rudiger could be back in the Chelsea squad.

The paper claims the two had heart-to-heart talks, and Lampard is ready to give Rudiger a chance to resurrect his Blues career.

The 27-year-old is happy to stay at the club if he has a fair shot at securing a starting spot.

It remains to be seen if he will remain beyond the January transfer window.

Lampard disappointed VAR shuns Chelsea penalty

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has expressed disappointment after he felt his side were denied a penalty in their goalless draw against Manchester United.

The manager expected that Harry Maguire’s tackle on Cesar Azpilicueta was going to be reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and a penalty would follow. He was left disappointed after his players call was snubbed by the referee

“I thought it was a clear penalty and I didn’t see it at the time from where I was standing. It is a hard call for the referee but VAR was quick to dismiss it and then they should have got the referee to watch it on the monitor, he said.

“I don’t understand it at all today, I thought it was a pretty simple one.”

The manager also praised goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who was named the man of the match. Lampard praised the goalie saying he was very good and was composed.

“his performance was very good. You rely on your goalkeeper in those moments in a tight game. He showed what he is there for and we brought him in for his quality. He has showed great composure in his games already.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard denies they face Manchester United tomorrow as favourites.

For Lampard, he is refusing to take United lightly in what he reminded his players is a “big game”.

“It certainly does feel like a big game,” Lampard said.

“They are a quality team, they went to Paris and got a fantastic result.

“It’s an opportunity to get some hard-earned points. It’s too early to assume anything. It’s early.

“The games of teams around you will always be big. There are games where you have to grind out.”

Mendy is my number one goalkeeper – Lampard

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard admits new signing Edouard Mendy is the number one keeper at the club.

Mendy was involved for the team against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League group stages.

The Blues played out a 0-0 draw with the Spanish side.

Mendy got a clean sheet, and Lampard believes he will go from strength to strength as he gets to know his new teammates.

“I think the way he has played in the three games since being here, he has played very well. Made a good save today, two clean sheets,” Lampard told reporters when asked if Mendy was now his first choice in goal.

“So at the minute, yes. I said when he came in it was good for competition. We knew his qualities and he is showing them already.

“So as it stands, yes it is. But that always remains something that is up for grabs, so that is why you have competition at clubs. The way he is playing I am very happy.”

  • Lampard didn’t rate Pulisic ‘because he’s American’ – Salzburg coach

Lampard didn’t rate Pulisic ‘because he’s American’ – Salzburg coach

RB Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch has claimed Chelsea boss Frank Lampard had doubts about Christian Pulisic because he is American.

Lampard awarded Pulisic the No 10 shirt for this season.

But Marsch claimed he had to put Lampard straight when speaking on Extratime Radio: “The perception in Europe, mostly, is that the American player is willing to run, willing to fight, has good mentality, but technically they’re not very gifted and tactically they’re not very aware and their experiences aren’t very big.

“But we’re seeing that change. We’re seeing more and more of these players develop themselves.

“Even Frank Lampard, when I spoke to him in preseason a year ago now, I was talking to him about having Christian Pulisic and he was kind of like, ‘Yeah, he’s got a lot to learn so we’ll see how he does’.

“I said to him, ‘Listen, he was at Dortmund, and they had a high level of tactical thinking, of playing, and he was very successful’.

“I could see right away that Frank Lampard’s idea of Christian Pulisic was shaped a lot by the fact that he was American and not that his football education came a lot from what has happened in Germany. Since then, I think Lampard has learned that Pulisic is a lot better than he gave him credit for.”

Ziyech has still yet to make his debut since his £37 million (€40m/$47m) move from Ajax, but Lampard confirmed that he would be on the bench at the weekend.

The German arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer for a £47.5 million fee.

The 24-year-old has started the season impressively, playing as a striker and off the left wing.

And Werner admits when he interacts with manager Frank Lampard and technical director Petr Cech, he finds it tough to stop getting starstruck.

“As a child, you don’t see much of the teams in the Premier League but you see them in the Champions League, so you see Chelsea, Manchester United,” he told Three UK.

“These were the clubs in my youth that won a lot so maybe [Cristiano] Ronaldo or when you are here, you hear [about Didier] Drogba and also Frank Lampard the manager, they have a lot of legends in the club here.

“When you come here and see they are working for the club, you see them and you were like a child like 10 or something, you see Ashley Cole, Lampard or Petr Cech you think ‘it’s crazy, I’m here now with them!’ It’s a lot of fun.”
