  • LASG warns residents over structures on waterways

    Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), has warned residents to stop building structures on waterways.

    Oke-Osanyintolu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday that indiscriminate building on waterways was largely responsible for flooding in the state.

    “Residents should stop building structures to prevent the free flow of water.

    “The government will re-enforce laws against illegal structure but with a human face; we will reconstruct, reorganised and redeveloped every area in Lagos.

    “Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared Lagos State as a state of emergency.

    “By this, we are improving on our infrastructure and LASEMA is well equipped to carry out a reorganisation of our mode of building.

    “Lagos residents should key into the vision of the state government.

    “We are appealing to our citizens that though we will talk, we will also act because we are ready for the job,’’ said.

    Oke-Osanyintolu said that the governor after going around Lagos metropolis declared emergency on roads, sanitation and environment.

    He said that one of the missions of the present administration was to look into enforcement of the state law, especially on waste disposal.

    He said that there was a need for Lagos residents to imbibe positive behavioural change to enable the government to achieve its aims of protecting the lives and property of citizens.

    The LASEMA boss said that Lagos state environmental agencies had sealed off many collapsed building sites.

    He alleged that the illegal building owners usually engage in construct work at midnight but said “the agencies are now on top of their responsibility’’.

    LASEMA expresses concern over pipeline vandalism in Lagos

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has raised the alarm of possible fire outbreak following pipeline vandalism at Kakatin Road, Aboru in Mosan-Okunola Local Council Area of the State.

    Director General of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, raised the alarm in an interview with in Lagos on Sunday.

    The LASEMA boss urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to shut down the pipeline from the source to avert major disaster.

    “I want to inform Lagos residents that pipeline vandalism has been reported in Kakatin Road leading to Aboru Mosan Okunola Local Government Development Area (LCDA) Lagos,” he said.

    Oke-Osanyintolu said that officials of the agency and other stakeholders were on stand by.

    He urged residents of the vicinity to avoid the use of naked fire around the area to avert disaster.

    Another petroleum tanker injures 2 men in Lagos – LASEMA boss

    The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, says another tanker conveying liquefied petroleum gas has injured two men in an accident.

    Oke-Osanyintolu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday that the truck fall off after losing control at Palmgroove inward, Obanikoro area of Lagos.

    According to him, the tanker with registration number AKD 621XX, lost control while on motion as a result of brake failure.

    He said that the tanker collided with a black Jeep with registration number SMK-101FL, a CLK Mercedes Benz with registration number YAB-990AS, and an opay motorcycle.

    Oke-Osanyintolu said no life was lost, but two adult male on the bike sustained serious injuries and had been taken to the hospital for medical attention.

    He said that the affected area have been cordoned off and traffic diverted to prevent secondary incident as a result of the leaking gas.

    He, however, said that officials of the Police, Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials had mobilised to the scene.

    Oke-Osanyintolu said tow truck and fire service were also present at the scene while recovery operation was ongoing.

  • Two dead, 30 vehicles burnt in Lagos pipeline explosion -LASEMA

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has stated that two people have been confirmed dead and 30 vehicles burnt in the Ijegun, Lagos pipeline explosion.
    The representative of the agency said the total loss would be determined at the end of the ongoing firefighting operation.
    He revealed that the explosion occurred when security agencies intercepted the vandals in the act.
    He said, “On arrival of the LRT at the scene of the incident, it was gathered that some vandals were engaged in illegal bunkering activities at Fire Junction, Ijegun, within the vicinity where NNPC pipelines were buried.
    “The vandals had already siphoned petrol into a 33,000 litres tanker while a second tanker of the same capacity was being loaded when security agencies suddenly intercepted them.
    “While trying to escape, some of the siphoned fuel spilled into the drainage and the vandals were alleged to have set the spilled fuel on fire in a bid to deter the security agencies from apprehending them.
    “The fire eventually returned to the pipeline point where the vandals siphoned the fuel and exploded with escalating fire which led to two fatalities and over 30 vehicles burnt.
    “The actual loss will be determined upon conducting post disaster enumeration after the fire has been put out.”
    The spokesperson for NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, noted that the safety of firefighters needed to be assured before the fire would be put off.
    He said, “Pipeline fire is a specialised fire management; not all firemen can handle it.
    “NNPC safety firemen are specially trained to handle such delicate incident and that is why NEMA mobilised the NNPC to the scene.
    “It will take time before the inferno can be tackled until the supplies from the pipeline is weak and disabled when supplies are shutdown and the main source and valves closest to the scene.
    “In as much as lives and property of the people are not threatened, the fire will be put off as soon as the safety of the fire officers are also assured.”
     

  • LASEMA cautions motorists driving through railway crossing

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has advised motorists, tricycle operators and other road users against reckless driving, over speeding, as well as to always be vigilant especially when driving through the railway crossings to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

    The General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu disclosed this following the unfortunate incident involving a tricycle rider that suddenly rammed into a moving train, while trying to cross the railway crossing around Shina Peters Road, Iju-Ishaga in Ifako Ijaye Local Council Development Area of the State .

    According to the General Manager, the Agency received the distress call on Tuesday, 30th of April 2019 at about 6:52 am. This prompted the immediate activation of the Agency’s Response Team and other stakeholders to the scene of the incident accordingly. “On arrival at the scene of incident, it was gathered that a tricycle with five people on board was involved in the unfortunate incident”.

    He further stated that preliminary investigation gathered at the scene of incident revealed that a tricycle with five people on board had a collision with a moving train resulting to the death of four (4) persons (three adult males and one adult female), while one adult male escape unhurt.

    The Agency’s Response Team and other stakeholders, which includes Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, (LNSC) Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) were responders at the incident scene. The dead bodies were recovered and handed over to State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) to be moved to the mortuary.

    Tiamiyu noted that the incident, could have been avoided if road traffic rules were strictly adhered to by the tricycle operator. He however advised motorists, other road users and especially tricycle operators who are mostly in the habit of manoeuvering any available space to always exercise patience when crossing railway lines to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

    Sad! Seven scavengers injured in Lagos building collapse

    Seven scavengers were on Monday reportedly wounded in another building collapse in Egerton oke Arin square, Lagos Island.

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency ( LASEMA ) made this known on its official Twitter handle.
    According to LASEMA, the building had been marked by LASBCA for Demolition, which started on Sunday.

    LASEMA confirmed that “officials were on top of the building when some scavengers tried to remove the doors on the ground floor and the remaining parts of the building collapsed on them.”

    According to the agency (LASEMA), the four rummagers sustained minor injuries and had been taken to the nearest hospital before the arrival of LRT.

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has warned miscreants who are in the habit of attacking emergency responders, infringing injuries and also destroying government vehicles acquired with tax payers’ money to desist from this heinous act.
    The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu disclosed this in Alauasa, Secreatariat, Ikeja today, following the recent attacks on his operatives around Obanikoro, Ikorodu Road and Ejigbo respectively where officials of the Agency were badly brutalized and vehicles damaged, noting that the perpetrators of this dastardly act would be fished out and prosecuted appropriately.
    He revealed that this act is mostly perpetrated by some unscrupulous elements who do not have any role to play at the scene of the incident, but rather create pandemonium thereby impeding the smooth operation of the emergency officers, putting their lives at risk of attack during the operation exercise by infringing injuries on them.
    According to him, “emergency workers should be seen as your friend coming to give help to people in distress as well as salvage properties during emergency situations such as road traffic accident, fire outbreak and so on, and as such should be allowed to carry out their assigned duties without any hinderance to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and properties.
    The General Manager noted that the present administration of His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has invested heavily in all emergency/security operatives towards prompt and adequate intervention to all emergency incidents in the State. He further stressed that tentacles of the Agency have been decentralized from the Command and Control Centre, Alausa, Ikeja to other parts of the State, which includes Lekki by Admiralty Way, Onipanu on Ikorodu Road and Cappa Dispatch Centre, Oshodi equipped with various rescue equipment and recovery vehicles.
    While expressing satisfaction with Lagosians who patronize the emergency toll-free line, 112/767, he however stressed the need to ensure they call the emergency numbers immediately and not to resolve to self-help before calling the numbers as well as giving precise location with the nearest landmark of incident scene. He further advised motorists especially commercial bus drivers to always ensure they give right of way to all emergency vehicles blaring siren or heading towards emergency scene.
    Tiamiyu finally reiterated that security operatives have been placed on red alert to arrest those who are in the act of carrying out these atrocities, noting that they will be prosecuted accordingly.

  • Ember Months: LASEMA boss cautions Lagosians on safety

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has urged Lagosians to be safety cautious as well as to demystify the negative report about the ember-months of September to December, periods of the year said to be often characterized by major emergency/disaster such as auto crashes, fire outbreaks and other tragedies that often claim lives and properties.

    Speaking in his office at the Secretariat, Alausa, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEMA) Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu noted that the period is mostly characterized with so many activities and high vehicular movement of people and goods in and out of the State with the festive activities of Christmas and New Year celebration.

    The General Manager expressed the need for attitudinal change of the people, especially motorists/commuters who feel the ember months are the time to double their hustle, thereby rushing to make more money and to get to their various destination at the least possible time at this period thereby leading to major road accidents which are caused by over speeding/reckless driving, drinking of alcohol and not adhering to traffic rules.

    He emphasized that the ember months are just like every other month of the calendar year and as such, motorists are advised to ensure necessary safety precautions are strictly adhered to while driving, noting that erring offenders would be prosecuted by the State Government.

    Tiamiyu stressed that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and all the other Agencies that are important in the management of emergencies in the State have been put on red alert to secure and protect the lives and properties of people living and doing business in the State.

    While attributing one of the major causes of fire outbreak during ember months to air becoming dryer, thus encouraging chain reaction of fire and also not switching off of electrical appliances when not in use that sometimes result to electrical fire outbreaks in public places like markets, malls and homes e.t.c which are often difficult to control because of the dry season.

    He advised our people to adopt electrical safety measures such as: always switch off electrical appliances when not in use, avoid naked wires, avoid storage of combustible substances such as (PMS) petrol and kerosene to avoid fire outbreak.

    The General Manager, however hinted that in a bid to stem occurrences of major disasters and emergencies in the State, the Agency as part of its advocacy programme will be embarking on road show to sensitize Lagosians on the Lagos State Emergency Toll Free Line 112/767 as well as jingles on various media platforms on emergency prevention/mitigation.

    Finally, he re-affirmed the commitment of His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode at providing necessary equipment and support as well as his Agency’s readiness in the management of emergency/disaster in the State through prompt intervention and extending its tentacles to all the nooks and crannies of the State.

    LASEMA says five persons died as boat capsizes in Ikorodu

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed five persons died, as boat capsized at Ebute Terminal, in Lagos.

    The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr Adesina Tiamiyu said that the agency received a distress call at about 5.57pm on Wednesday.

    Tiamiyu said that on arrival at the incident scene, it was observed that a 20 capacity passenger boat belonging to Blue sea capsized mid-sea, enroute Ikorodu from Lagos Island.

    He said that the immediate cause of the boat mishap was not yet known.

    ”Unfortunately, five persons (four adult females and one adult male) were confirmed dead as a result of the incident.

    ”Their bodies were deposited at the morgue at Ikorodu General Hospital, while five persons (four female and onr male) were rescued alive,” Tiamiyu said.

    He said that the rescue was carried out by the combined efforts of LASEMA, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).

    Recovery efforts are still on-going as at the time of this report.

  • Heavy traffic on Third Mainland as LASEMA conducts simulation exercise

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency( LASEMA) has advised motorists to avoid the Third Mainland bridge following a gridlock which is as a result of a live simulation exercise presently being conducted by the agency.

    The exercise is conducted in collaboration with stakeholders tagged “Operation Oko Jososa”, which is opposite the Unilag Waterfront, inward Lagos Island.

    In a statement by LASEMA Public Affairs Unit, Adebayo Kehinde, the exercise is a simulation of multiple road accidents involving a luxurious bus and five other vehicles one of which plunged into the Lagos Lagoon.

    The aim is to sharpen synergy, foster collaboration, improve the level of preparedness and increase the response capability of stakeholders in the management of multiple casualty incidents in along the 3rd Mainland Bridge which more often than not witnesses this kind of event.

    Those involved are men of the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) State Environmental Health and Monitoring Unit (SEHMU ), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Waterway Authority (LASWA), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Marine Police National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Nigerian Security & Civil Defence Corp and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    The Lagos State Government, however, advised motorists and Lagosians at large not to panic as this exercise is only alive simulation exercise to ascertain the capability, response time and coordination among emergency response which requires coordinated Multi-Agency response.
