  • Accrued pension debt: LASG approves N711m for 287 retirees in September

The Lagos State Government has disbursed the sum of N711 million as pension payments for the month of September.

The Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) in a statement on Monday by its Head of Public Affairs Unit, Mrs Basirat Lawal, said the N711 million was released to pay 287 retirees for that month.

LASPEC said Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, was represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr Akintola Oke, at the Retirement Bond Certificates Presentation on Sept. 29.

“The Agency in the month of September also released Insured death benefit cheques amounting to about N32 million to nine beneficiaries and next-of-Kin of deceased employees,’’ it stated.

Ambode reiterated in the statement that Lagos State was committed by being up-to-date in Pension payments, and the administration advised the retirees not to live extravagantly.

The statement quoted Ambode as saying that he has embarked on massive infrastructural development in the state that would, however, give great priority to those who have laboured and were now retired.

“I understand the challenges facing the retirees and that the receipt of their pension dues will enable them face the future, as well as other goodies in the pipeline,’’ Ambode said.

The Director-General of LASPEC, Mrs Folashade Onanuga, in the statement also advised the pensioners to spend wisely.

“If you are in the evening time of your life, make sure you rest well, and do not do anything that will aggravate your health status.

“Use your pension for your basic needs and make sure you eat well and in moderation.

“The current economic challenges have affected the ability of youths to gain employment, such that in essence, many youths who should be taking care of themselves and their parents are still depending on them.

“I also advise the retirees to consider using the lump sum received to empower any resourceful child to start a family business, which could end up creating jobs for others,’’ Onanuga added.

  • Apapa gridlock: Stay out of Lagos, LASG orders truck drivers

Sequel to the incessant gridlocks witnessed at the Apapa axis of Lagos, the State Government on Friday directed owners and operators of articulated vehicles/trailers and petroleum tankers to stay away from its borders for now.

The state government in a press conference jointly addressed by officials of the State as well as members of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, regretted that the incessant traffic bottleneck had impacted negatively on the commercial activities of the citizenry, adding that the directive would be enforced to eliminate the current hardship being faced by motorists.

Addressing the briefing, the State’s Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi said investigations revealed that the traffic lockdown was a direct result of the challenges being faced by operators of the ports’ which had made it impossible for them to load the articulated vehicles/trailers that have come from the hinterland to evacuate imported items from the ports.

He said the gridlock was worsened by the current rehabilitation of some major roads and other minor roads which necessitated the closure of some roads in Apapa, noting that the situation had led to the traffic bottleneck and backflow of the articulated vehicles to as far as Ojuelegba on the Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere.

Explaining the reason for the State’s directive, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the Apapa gridlock had also become a reoccurring problem due to constant breakdown of operations at the Ports.

“Clearly, it is the breakdown of operations at the Port that is the monster causing this reoccurring issue. We keep having this issue of gridlock in Apapa because issues that the Ports Authorities and the concessionaires are dealing with are recurrent and the spillover effect of those issues are causing all these.

  • Dilapidated pedestrian bridge: LASG restricts movement on Ikorodu Road

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said that there would be a partial restriction of movement on Ikorodu Road to enable it replace the dilapidated and disused steel pedestrian bridge at Fadeyi Bus Stop with a new footbridge.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Olujimi Hotonu, the government said that in its continuous drive to protect the lives of pedestrians on the highway, the disused pedestrian bridge would be pulled down to give way for a new one worthy of the status of the state.

To effect the removal of the bridge, the State Government said the main carriage lanes of the Ikorodu Road would be closed to traffic for two nights on Saturday, 23rd September, between 11pm and 6 am, and Sunday 24th between 11 pm and 4 am, while the service lanes will be open to traffic.

The Government also said all traffic both inward Lagos and outward Ojota will be diverted to the service lanes.

While soliciting for the cooperation and support of all road users especially motorists plying the corridor to observe all the caution signs on the road, the state government said it had put in place effective traffic management strategies to manage the traffic during the period of closure.

The government said the notice of partial restriction of the road became expedient to enlighten motorists and other road users to utilise alternative routes to avoid delay as well as obey traffic officers deployed.

While regretting the inconveniences the partial restriction would cause, the government appealed for caution, noting that the ultimate goal of the plan was to safeguard lives and improve traffic along the corridor.

Heavy rainfall: LASG warns residents to stay indoors

The Lagos State government has warned residents to stay indoors, because of the torrential rains in most parts of the state.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Samuel Adejare, said the rains were bound to have an untoward effect on landed property, roads and the environment.

“You are implored as much as possible to stay indoors unless it is essential to go out.

However, we strongly advise those who live in lowland and close to water bodies to move upland, Adejare said in a statement.

“Due to the downpour in the state, motorists plying Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island and other areas prone to flood, which has caused traffic gridlock in the state, are advised to take alternative routes made available by traffic officials.

“This is because flood in the area has caused us to temporarily block the road for safety,” the police said in a statement.

TheNewsGuru.com had earlier published photos and videos of several areas of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and Victoria Garden City, VGC, areas of Lagos state submerged by the flood, due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the state.

  • Collapsed Lagos building: LASG accuses developer of ‘flouting stop-work order’

Collapsed Lagos building: LASG accuses developer of ‘flouting stop-work order’

    …Says investigations already in progress

The Lagos State Government on Friday accused the developers of the three-storey building which collapsed in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos of “criminally unsealing a stop work order on the building” and continued construction before the eventual collapse.

Speaking to newsmen after an assessment of the collapsed site, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Wasiu Anifowose, said the building in question was disapproved by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), but the developers illegally broke the seal to continue work.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that so far, three people had died while 19 others were injured when the building collapsed at around 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Anifowose said LASBCA officers in charge of the area where the incident occurred had, two weeks before the collapse, disapproved the development because it was being built contrary to building regulations.

This particular building had been monitored and had been sealed off,” Anifowoshe said.

Our officers had come back to monitor for compliance but they were prevented by hoodlums from carrying out their statutory responsibilities.

Yesterday, before the collapse, our officials were there again but were chased back to the office to reinforce when this tragedy happened.

We had actually served all the necessary statutory stop work notices and this is evident in our records that the building was sealed off but this developer broke the seal twice and continued with the illegal development and this is the result of the illegality,” the Commissioner said.

He said the building was sealed off based on the evidence that the materials found on site were substandard, aside the fact that the developers had no development permit to embark on the construction.

The commissioner said the government was unhappy with the rate of illegal developments within the state.

Despite deploying officers to monitor development to prevent such ugly occurrences, some wicked, irresponsible and unscrupulous developers still carryout nefarious illegality,” he said.

Once a building is sealed off, the seal should not be broken. It is dangerous and is a criminal offence punishable under the building control law.”

Anifowose said the state government had opened investigation into the matter and would not hesitate to sanction any developer who violates the law.
