Murdered Fashion Designer: FG ,IGP tasked to take over investigation

A lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN has admonished the Lagos state government and the police not to compromise the investigation of the murdered fashion designer, Miss Oluwabamishe Ayanwole.
Adegboruwa tasked the Federal Government and the Inspector General of police, Usman Baba to take over the investigation of the murder case of Oluwabamishe
Recall that Oluwabamishe was murdered after boarding a BRT bus from Chevron bus stop at Ajah, enroute Oshodi in Lagos.
TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports the FG and IGP Baba were tasked by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun -Olu Adegboruwa to take over the investigation to guide against a cover up.
Adegboruwa, in a statement stressed that it will be in the interest of the police to come out clean and fetch other fleeing killing squad of the deceased, saying that he smells a rat and a conspiracy to do a cover -up in an attempt to scuttle ongoing investigation with a hurriedly packaged TV interview with the suspect driver.
”Events unfolding concerning the murder of Miss Oluwabamishe Ayanwole are as intriguing as they are worrisome. Following public outcry and media monitoring, the Lagos State Government hurriedly packaged the Bus Rapid Transfer driver for media interview, to give the impression that he was innocent of the crime.
”Some further revelations have now thrown up very serious questions that the Lagos State Government must answer, if it is not covering up this dastardly act of daylight murder.
”In a homicide matter of this magnitude, how can a prime suspect who was declared missing, be handed over to government by the security agencies?
”A video of his initial arrest showed that the driver confessed to having carnal knowledge of the deceased, in very remorseful fashion. He was dressed in shabby and disheveled attire, truly reflecting his fugitive status as of the time of his arrest”.
”Who then packaged a crime suspect, to turn out clean shaven, dressed in specially designed Lagos State Government outfit and now well tutored to claim innocence to set up the cock and bull story of hijack?
”Why was Lagos State Government romancing a murder suspect?
”And why was he paraded on a selected media of TV Continental, over which Lagos State has influence through patronage?

”What is the business of Lagos State in the interrogation of a murder suspect?

The Commissioner of Police had earlier addressed the press to the extent that the suspect had confessed to the crime before Lagos State emerged with the latter James Bond storyline”. He said
Adegorunwa said ,it will be a sad day for humanity in general should the government stoop so low to try to cover up a clear case of murder, just for public relations. He accused governor Sanwo-Olu of being a party to the packaged story being told by the driver, saying it doesn’t add up.
The lawyer said that Lagos state police cannot be trusted to handle the murder case , because it had already surrendered a murder suspect still under investigation to the Lagos state Government for media packaging.
He urged the federal government to take over the investigation of the case to avoid compromise in the Murder case

Lagos seals 6 lounges and night clubs

The Lagos State Safety Commission has said it sealed lounges and night clubs in Ikeja over the lack of compliance which is part of its 2022 Zero Accident Campaign (ZAC).

The Director General/CEO, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, stated in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday that ZAC is determined to ensure that all workplaces and public facilities are safe for all visitors and workers alike.

Mojola said that the action on some Bars, Lounges and Night Clubs became necessary due to their contravention of the State Government regulations despite several efforts to ensure compliance.

He slammed the failure of these establishments to obtain safety compliance certificates, and register with the safety commission through its www.lasgsafetyreg.com portal.

The Safety Commission boss said that the lack of fire extinguishers, poor hygiene and housekeeping, lack of safety signages and inadequate parking spaces had caused traffic gridlocks and other safety infractions identified by the Commission.

Mojola further reiterated that similar enforcement exercises would take place across the State as the Lagos State Safety Commission continues to discharge its duties.

He said that the commission would not relent in its efforts, especially when implementing the laws of the Commission towards a safer Lagos for all.

He implored all business entities to regularise their safety management documentation towards achieving safer public places across the State.

LASG identifies 6,500 inbound passengers who flouted COVID-19 travel guidelines

The Lagos State Government says it has identified and started communicating with about 6,500 inbound passengers who are suspected to have breached COVID-19 travel guidelines.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi on Friday.

“We have commenced communicating with 6,500 inbound passengers who are suspected of not being compliant with our guidelines established to protect the community, lives and our economy,” a statement by the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi said on Friday.

The Lagos State Government also disclosed that it had activated a mobile court for defaulters of the mandatory COVID testing for arriving travellers, peddlers of fake certificates and persons refusing to isolate on arrival into the country.

According to Mr Abayomi, the move is part of efforts to halt the alarming trend of defaulters whose actions were responsible for previous increasing waves of the pandemic in Lagos State.

“In response to this civil disobedience of our citizens, on the 14th of December Lagos State publicly announced the activation of the mobile court for defaulters of mandatory COVID testing for arriving travellers, peddlers of fake certificates and persons refusing to isolate,” the statement read in part.

“The announcement and activation of the prosecution of defaulters by mobile courts resulted in a sudden trend in travellers complying with the requisite Day-Two and Day-Seven testing, isolation protocols and other guidelines, causing an almost doubling of our testing volumes per day. This is a very encouraging development. The more test the better we can prevent community transmission.

“Many more positive inbound travellers were identified, and many more persons observed the isolation protocols resulting in better control of importation and spread into and within the community.

“As a government, we are determined to halt the alarming trend of defaulters whose actions were responsible for previous waves of the pandemic in Lagos State,” the statement added.

  • ENDSARS Panel and the LASG White Paper, By Carl Umegboro

ENDSARS Panel and the LASG White Paper, By Carl Umegboro

    By Carl Umegboro

The ‘ENDSARS’ nationwide protest warranted by the ruthless and extrajudicial killings of security agencies particularly the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit in the Nigerian Police then, which is endemic in Nigeria has continued to take different dimensions. During the protest, monumental losses were recorded by the governments, public and private sectors. Several policemen were killed. Police stations, government vehicles including eighty (80) newly acquired BRT buses provided for mass transit by Lagos state government valued at a whopping N3.9 billion were asininely set ablaze. Two major Correctional centres were attacked and inmates freed. Acts of sexual violence were also reported. NPA headquarters in Lagos, banks, courts and others also got their share from hoodlums’ attacks.

In the private sector, part of the Oriental Hotels at Lekki which was then rumoured to belong to the APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his Television Continental (TVC) were openly, irrationally damaged which changed the narrative as settling political scores. Invasion of the palace of Oba of Lagos, others’ houses and looting of many shopping malls were also encountered in the mobs’ actions. What remains baffling is the connection between these individuals being ‘bloody-civilians’ like the protesters and the police brutality. These incidents suggest the protest was hijacked to settle scores.

At the initial stage, President Muhammadu Buhari backed the protesters to freely express their grievances albeit in a peaceful manner as a conventional best practice over incessant police excesses, and in solidarity, instantly scrapped SARS. That done, but rather than the protest subsided as expected, it advanced and rapidly transformed to ‘End-Buhari’ revolution with politicians funding and reinforcing the mobs which attracted the security operatives to arrest the situation. Conversely, scrapping the SARS was ill-advised. Disciplining the bad eggs in SARS should have practically achieved a better result instead of complete scrapping of the unit as insecurity in the country has overtly worsened following the action.

Then, following claims and counter-claims of massacres at Lekki tollgate in Lagos during the protest particularly by the Cable News Network (CNN), Buhari through the National Economic Council directed state governments to set up independent panels to investigate, report findings alongside make recommendations. Consequently, the ‘Lagos State Panel of Inquiry on Restitution of Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Related Matters’ was birthed to independently handle the tasks efficiently. On November 15, 2021, the panel submitted its report, but by mission or omission, it was leaked. Next, an alleged death threat of a member of the panel spread intensely all over the media space. Many believe the leakage was shadily planned to overshadow the anticipated White Paper.

From the panel’s report, it submitted that at least 46 unarmed protesters were either shot dead, injured with bullets or assaulted by security forces at Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020 and penciled names of nine dead persons but without details including circumstances that led to their deaths. Logically, the term ‘either’ in the panel’s report after a one-year intensive investigation makes it neither here nor there. On account of the inconsistencies, the White Paper released by the LASG endorsed only 11 out of the 32 recommendations and separated those statutorily under federal government’s control. It also rejected the list of nine dead persons purportedly killed at Lekki tollgate except one which was witnessed during the uproar as no details supported others. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor however leaves the door open for proof to contenders, and plans a peace walk. Though a good idea, however, the rally should be critically reconsidered against further civil disorder particularly in December.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed had earlier described the report as ‘fake and tales by moonlight’. It was also rumoured that one of the deceased among the purported murdered persons in the report died a year prior to the ENDSARS protest. Now, looking at the intention of the government for considering an investigative panel, perceptively, it was targeted to a redress where necessary provided it reflects the true positions of what transpired during the protest. However, the government argues that no family showed up when corpses could be traced, identified, examined or autopsy conducted and those allegedly injured with gunshots be verified at the hospitals. It further argues that death certificates of the alleged slain protesters are necessary to ascertain the date, location and cause of death. These are strong arguments any day.

Suffice to say that the panel failed to credibly determine the claims of alleged massacres and police brutality during the protest at Lekki tollgate. Possibly, the panel enthroned emotions above objectivity leading it to rest on speculations and assumptions. The panel’s conclusions without proof are debatably prejudiced. The first task should have been to visit the alleged bereaved families and injured persons in the hospitals for verification as everybody living or dead is traceable to a family. Essentially, the panel ought to adduce death certificates and medical reports from hospitals that treated injured persons as it is a standard practice that hospitals do not treat persons with gunshots without a police report prior to or while undergoing treatment.

The way forward is; as Babajide Sanwo-Olu astutely leaves the door open demonstrating his neutrality, the allegations of extrajudicial killing of nine persons and brutality of the unarmed protesters will rest on nothing, lacking strong argument to challenge the White Paper if without proof. And sensibly, no accountable government will do otherwise. The alleged massacres and brutality must be substantiated by the victims’ families as well as those treated in hospitals of injuries linkable to the military and police brutality during the protests in October 2020. Thus, the onus rests squarely on CNN and those that adduced the panel with claims of massacres and brutality during the Lekki tollgate protests to substantiate them. If there are no proofs, on a serious note, CNN owes the country unreserved apologies for misrepresentation. The truth matters more than propaganda.

He noted that the submission of the findings of the judicial panel would accelerate the process of justice and accountability.

“I welcome the submission to the Lagos State Governor, H.E. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of the reports of the judicial panel on claims of brutality and shooting in the Lekki area of Lagos State, during the 2020 EndSARS protests.

“I urge the government to implement the recommendations of the judicial panel of inquiry to rebuild trust and start the process of healing and reconciliation,” the statement added.

LASG, LCC ask judicial panel to strike out #EndSARS protest coordinator’s testimony

One of the Coordinators of the #EndSARS protests, Serah Ibrahim again failed to show up for her cross-examination on Saturday at the Lagos State judicial panel on restitution for victims of SARS-related abuses and other matters.

This prompted the lawyers representing the Lagos State Government, the Lekki Concession Company, LCC and the Police to ask the panel to strike out her previous testimony.

They premised their application on her continued absence at the proceedings of the panel.

During her previous testimony, Serah, who described herself as a professional auditor said she was at the protest ground every day and in fact helped in coordinating activities.

Led by her lawyer, Yinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), Serah had narrated how the Nigerian Army and subsequently the police shot at protesters at the Lekki toll gate on the night of October 20, 2020.

She testified that at least 10 persons were killed.

During her appearance at the panel on May 8, Serah came along with several videos, some of which she said she shot personally with her iPhone.

One after the other, she played the videos which according to her demonstrates that soldiers shot at peaceful protesters on the night of October 20.

As she played the videos, she explained to the panel that soldiers shot at the harmless protesters and even took away some of the dead bodies.

Counsel to the Lagos State Government, Olukayode Enitan (SAN), in his application to strike out her testimony told the panel that the witness has been evading cross-examination after making “scandalous and outrageous claims.”

He asked the panel to note that this is about the 4th court sitting that the witness had failed to turn up for and having failed to present herself for cross-examination, she should be deemed to have abandoned the cause.

The Senior Advocate’s application was supported by Counsel to the LLC, Rotimi Seriki and Counsel to the Police, Joseph Eboseremen.

On her part, the Chairman of the Panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi said members would consider the application and take a decision which would be communicated later.

She adjourned the proceedings till September 11.

LASG demolishes partially collapsed building, marks 70 others for removal

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) says it has demolished a partially collapsed building at No. 19, Church Str, Lagos Island and its set to demolish 70 others.
A statement on Friday by LASBCA spokesman, Mr Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, said the General Manager of the agency Mr Gbolahan Oki, supervised the demolition exercise.
Speaking at the demolition site, Oki said it has became an urgency to immediately remove the dilapidated and distressed building, which was no longer fit for human habitation to prevent collapse.
He said several other defective buildings had been marked for removal to rid the state of defective buildings, in a bid to end the era of building collapses.
Oki noted that his team had earlier visited the distressed building site to get an on the spot assessment and asked the residents to relocate for their safety.
The General Manager said the agency had identified and marked 70 other distressed buildings within the state for removal.
He explained that 20 of the structures were discovered on Lagos Island.
Oki assured that due process would be followed for Non Destructive Tests (NDTs) to be carried out on affected buildings in order to ascertain their structural integrity.
He added that the test would also determine if the buildings could be either renovated or demolished if found not safe for human habitation.
The General manager further reiterated that the “government has absolute zero tolerance for building collapse, hence all building codes regulation within the state would be strictly enforced”.
He added that enforcement would include ensuring all buildings above two floors obtained insurance, as contained in the Building Regulations 2019 (as amended).
He warned developers and property owners to always do the right thing by involving LASBCA at various stages of construction works and obtaining all requisite approvals and completion certificates.
Oki appealed to Lagos residents to help government achieve its aim of creating a safer state by reporting substandard construction and dilapidated structures within their locality to the agency.

Lekki protests: LASG denies ordering arrest, maltreatment of protesters; says CP will give account of what happened

The Lagos State Government on Sunday said the Commissioner of Police will be questioned on the events at the Lekki Toll Gate – the venue for the planned #OccupyLekkiTollGate protests on February 13.

The State Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, said during an interview on a monitored Channel Television programme.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that during the protest, popular comedian Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, along with some others were arrested by the police.

They were also said to have been mistreated as videos that have now gone viral online, showed some of them being thrown shirtless into a police van.

The protesters had come out to oppose the decision of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry to reopen the Lekki Toll Gate and hand it over to the Lekki Concession Company.

According to the Commissioner for Justice, the government has no problem with residents exercising their fundamental rights to freedom of expression or participation in peaceful protests, however, if the action of the protesters is seen to result in a breakdown of law and order, then that is where a crime is being committed.

He cited a breach of COVID-19 protocols as part of the offences of those arrested, as well as the fear that the exercise could go out of hand.

“We cannot afford the sort of vandalism we saw before,” Onigbanjo said.

He, however, stated that the CP will be asked to give proper accounts of the events that led to the arrests, especially if they indeed mistreated peaceful protesters.

“We condemn any act of brutality on the part of the police,” the commissioner said, explaining that the government is not the one who gives such orders.

“The Nigerian police force is a legal entity of its own, with its own processes.

“But the role of the police stops when it comes to prosecution. The state government will ask the CP to give an account of what happened”.

Onigbanjo further defended the state government, saying that the ideally, arrests made on weekends don’t get to be brought to court until Monday, but in the case of those arrested, mobile court was set up immediately and the arrested youths were allowed bail and released later that same day.

“We were hell-bent on ensuring that nobody’s right is trampled upon,” he said.

  • Fresh fuel scarcity looms in Lagos today as NUPENG’s talks with LASG end in deadlock

Fresh fuel scarcity looms in Lagos today as NUPENG’s talks with LASG end in deadlock

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has said that the planned strike by Petroleum Tanker Drivers in Lagos would start on Monday as its meeting with Lagos State Government ended in deadlock.

The South-West Chairman of NUPENG, Mr Tayo Aboyeji, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos on Sunday.

Aboyeji said the issues which forced the drivers to initiate an indefinite strike was not addressed during the four-hour meeting with officials of Lagos State Government on Sunday.

“They only promised to get back to us after we have told them what we want to avert the strike.

“Now, our stand still remains that they should address the issues of extortion and harassment of our members by security agents.

“Security agents and hoodlums are extorting our members and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management use taser on our drivers and this can kill.

“Since they are not ready to address these issues, we will start the strike on Monday morning until they are able to resolve them.

“It is unfortunate that the strike might affect all other states in the federation because most of them load their petroleum products in Lagos depots.

“We are not happy to disrupt fuel supply because we know the effect but we cannot continue to cope with the problems,” he said.

Aboyeji said that members of PTD were now accusing NUPENG of taking side with security agents to molest and assault drivers on Lagos roads.

TheNewsGuru.Com, TNG reports that the National President of the NUPENG, Mr Williams Akporeha, had in a statement on Friday directed tanker drivers to begin the withdrawal of their services as from 12:midnight on Monday.
