LASU reacts to viral certificate found at suya spot

The management of the Lagos State University has reacted to a viral photo of its certificate found at a suya spot in the state.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that a certificate belonging to one Abisoye Azeez Oluwaseun, an engineering graduate student surfaced on social media some couple of days ago after a man requested to connect with the bearer because it was used to sell suya to him.

Oluwaseun graduated with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in Chemical and Polymer Engineering from LASU, the certificate showed.

Reacting to the development, the institution’s management in a statement made available to the public on Tuesday said that the certificate has been invalidated because the bearer’s name is incorrectly spelt.

Confirming that the viral certificate exists, the school noted that it was invalidated on February 25, 2013, because the graduate’s surname was incorrectly written as ABISOYE instead of ABIOYE.

LASU further stressed that the institution had issued a new certificate with the correct surname, which the graduate collected on September 30, 2014.

The university maintained that according to its policy, the invalidated certificate should have been shredded immediately after re-issuance.

However, the certificate ended up in the public space due to an oversight.

The statement read, “The University, having recovered the certificate on November 21, 2018, wishes to make the following clarifications: The certificate in question exists but was invalidated on February 25, 2013, because the graduate’s surname was incorrectly written as ABISOYE instead of ABIOYE.

“The invalidated certificate got into the public space due to improper screening of office waste papers prior to disposal.”

She said this led to the formulation of the six strategic goals that have guided his administration’s policies.

“The sixth goal aims to promote sports and recreational activities not only as an entertaining event but also as a healthy lifestyle choice that has the added advantage of immense business opportunities for staff and students.

“An objective that the hosting of the forthcoming FASU, and other games like NUGA will help foster,” she said.

Olatunji-Bello called on both local and international organisations, vendors, to partner and support the game.

She said that such support would also demonstrate their commitment as progressive partners in the development of Lagos and to the growth of sports in Africa.

“Your admission today is a testament to our institution’s dedication to accessibility and inclusivity in education.

“Over the last few years, we have provided access to quality education for working professionals through the Sandwich Degree Programme here on our main campus, Epe campus, and other affiliated institutions.

“For us, regardless of the academic programme offered, quality education is always the watchword,” she said.

Olatunji-Bello implored the students to be vigilant, and security conscious at all times, and report any suspicious activity to the university authorities for appropriate response.

“We have digitalised admission process and students records allowing our students to register for their courses and also accessing their results promptly online.

“Our digitalisation process has also rubbed off positively on our certificate processing, cutting the processing time and eradicating delays in the issuance of certificates.

“These, in addition to the quality of our lecturers and organisation, meaning that we have arguably the best Sandwich Degree Programme in Nigeria today,” the vice-chancellor said.

Prof. John Adeogun, Director, Sandwich Degree Programme, charged the matriculating students to make the most of the rare opportunity and ensure class attendance above 70 per cent, while focusing on seeking the university’s degree.

Adeogun said that university management would ensure welfare, security and improvement of learning facilities for all students.

“I hope that you will avail yourselves of the opportunity to excel and become worthy ambassadors of the university.

Role of auditors place them as ‘watchdogs or gatekeepers’ – Lagos Auditor-General

The  Auditor-General, Lagos State, Mr Moshood Adewuyi on Tuesday, described the role of auditors as watchdogs and gatekeepers.

He charged the Head of Internal Audits in Nigerian universities to embrace principles of good governance, accountability, and transparency to improve their respective institutions.

Adewuyi gave the advice at the 36th National Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Committee of Head of Internal Audits Departments/Units In Nigerian Universities (CHIADINU), held at the Lagos State University (LASU) in Lagos.

The Auditor-General was represented by Ms Olufunmilola Coker, Head, Internal Audit, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA) at the conference.

The theme of the conference is “Governance, Risk Management and Compliance : Issues and Insights For University Internal Auditors”.

He stated that the role of internal auditors cannot be overemphasised in any private or public organisation, noting, “they are indispensable in ensuring compliance with extant financial rules and regulations”.

Adewuyi said this compliance allows the internalisation of processes and procedures in the application of resources.

“The role of auditors put them as ‘watchdogs or gatekeepers’ because they ensure proper documentations, examination of books and records, monitoring the use of resources in accordance with pre-determined financial plans, and safety of organisational assets.

“Our roles are essential to the growth and development of the respective universities where we work, and especially in situations where resources are limited and where value for money is expected,” he added.

According to him, the auditors must embrace effective organisational risk management and mechanisms established to ensure adherence.

The management of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has confirmed removing the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Tajudeen Olumoko, as part of the ongoing investigation into the allegation of certificate racketeering in the institution.

Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU, made this known in a statement on Friday, in Lagos.

Thomas-Onashile said that the management was not covering up any staff on alleged certificate racketeering which was published recently online.

She said that attention of management had been drawn to recent reports regarding alleged “Certificate Racketeering” and a “sting operation” in the university.

“For emphasis, there has been no “cover-up” and there will be no “cover-up”.

“The management has promptly brought the original allegations to the attention of general law enforcement authorities, including the office of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

“These authorities have not yet concluded their investigations.

“The management does not take such matters lightly.

“Its own inquiries into the allegations will be concluded before the end of 2023,”she said.

Thomas-Onashile added that the Vice-Chancellor had approved the appointment of Dr. Surajudeen Fatai as the new Acting Dean, Students’ Affairs Division of the university.

“Fatai is a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, LASU.

“The appointment is for a period of a year, with effect from Nov. 7, 2023 to Nov. 6, 2024,”she said.

LASU removes Student Affairs dean over alleged certificate racketeering

The Lagos State University, Ojo, has removed the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Tajudeen Olumoko.

His removal was in connection with a news report published on Monday by an online news platform.

The story revealed that a certificate racketeering syndicate had genuine Lagos State University certificates that anyone interested could purchase for between N2m and N3m, depending on the technicality of the course involved.

Meanwhile, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, has been appointed as acting DSA.

A source in the university who does not want to be mentioned confirmed the removal to our correspondent, saying, “Yes, it is true, Olumoko has been removed and Abatan has taken over as DSA. This happened yesterday, (Tuesday).”

However, the Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, when asked for the school’s reaction to the removal of Prof Olumoko, told a national newspaper “I can’t say if he has been removed or not. I am not yet in the office. So, I don’t know anything yet.”

Management on Tuesday, said it would invite the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Akibu, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Senate of the tertiary institution and other top staff over allegations of extortion and certificate racketeering levelled against the school recently.

  • LASU debunks reports on delay in HND conversion

LASU debunks reports on delay in HND conversion

Lagos State University (LASU) has debunked a report alleging that it has yet to graduate students converting from Higher National Diploma (HND) to Bachelor’s Degree since 2020 in spite of huge sums they paid.

Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU, said that the report was published by an online platform and entitled: “Despite paying more than half a million Naira, LASU HND conversion students have not graduated since 2020”.

In a statement she issued on Sunday in Lagos, Thomas-Onashile said that the report was fraught with lies and half-truth.

The coordinator said that the report appeared like a calculated attempt to smear the image of the university.

“As a responsible institution, we consider it necessary, therefore, to provide the true position so that falsehood may not prevail over truth.

“The HND/B.Sc conversion programme, which is a programme designed for two academic sessions, commenced at the university in 2020.

“Therefore, it could not have been possible for the university to graduate the newly-admitted students in the same year of entry – 2020, as reflected in the headline.

“Students who have met the graduation requirements have all been presented and cleared by the university senate for graduation, an assertion that can be confirmed in the 26th convocation brochure of the university.

“A total of 48 duly-registered students graduated at the 26th convocation of the university, 12 students’ results are awaiting approval of the senate while others have pending issues,” she said.

Thomas-Onashile added that the university like other academic institutions, had a time frame for opening and closing of its portal (be it for payment, registration, examination or other academic purposes).

“Any student who does not utilise this time frame as expected will automatically be shut out.

“This might have accounted for some of them not being able to register.

“However, students who registered within the given time frame and sat for their examinations are able to access their results on the portal once it is released by the directorate of ICT,” she said.

She added that some of the students did not go through the right channel for registration of courses.

“They might have engaged the services of surrogates to do the registration on their behalf which is always to their disadvantage.

“Some of the students who did not comply with the rules and regulations guiding the process wanted the university to waive courses that they did not pass.

“Those concerned are requested to take all their failed courses as carry-over, but, they are not willing,” she said.

Thomas-Onashile said that the university would continue to work in line with the best global practices.

“Students with pending issues are, therefore, requested to visit the Director, Directorate of School of Part Time Studies (DSPTS) for legitimate guides towards resolving their issues, ”she said.
