8,000-bed LASU hostel ready for allocation – VC

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, says a section of an 8,000-bed students hostel in the Ojo Campus of the university has been completed and ready for allocation.

Olatunji-Bello made this known at a news conference with student-journalists and influencers, to mark the second anniversary of her assumption of office as LASU vice-chancellor.

The event held on Wednesday in Lagos.

She said that students would start getting hostel spaces from the next academic session.

LASU management expresses its commitment to addressing concerns raised by students.

“I approved the provision of free transportation for students commuting between LASU Iba Gate and Iyana-School, morning and evening, daily.

“This is a measure to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the students,” she said.

The vice-chancellor said that she also approved extension of the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic session by two weeks.

“Examination will now commence mid of Nov. 2023,” Olatunji-Bello said.

She added that in response to overcrowding of classes, the institution had adopted hybrid (physical and online) mode of teaching for large classes.

“LASU is already making provision for facilities to support hybrid teaching.

“Also, work-study scheme is being implemented in the university; students can volunteer to work and get stipends at various centres in the university.

“There is a plan by the university to co-host the African Universities Games with the University of Lagos; the competition will come up later this year,” Olatunji-Bello said.

The vice chancellor said they were glad to be associated with the initiative, as it aligned with their drive to leverage science and technology.

“This is an historical event on the South Pole, as Indians would cherish Chandrayaan three for life because it will enrich their memories and exposure to the world on science and technology.

“The institution is willing to further work on mutual beneficial programmes and initiatives towards building a better place for Lagosians,”she said.

Mahesh Narasimhan, Consulate General of India, Lagos, said this was their third mission to the moon and Chandrayaan three was a great success.

” Chandrayaan three landed on the South Pole of the moon and no country in the world has landed there, which is a big achievement for us.

“We chose LASU to view the streaming because LASU is one of the great universities in Nigeria, and particularly, Lagos State,” he said.

Ramesh Biswal, Coordinator, Sanyukta Bharitiya Association, Lagos chapter, said this was a big achievement, not only for Indians, but for other countries in the world.

LASU student dies in Ogun fatal crash

A 26-year-old student of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ademola Ayinla Timothy, and two others have died in an accident along the Sagamu-Benin highway.

The accidents involved a Lexus SUV marked BDG 979 HD, a Geon truck registered as LAR 730 XB, and a Toyota Sienna car.

Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

Odutola said the crash occurred at 6:45 am before the Babcock University junction along the expressway.

Odutola blamed the crash on reckless driving on the part of the driver of the Lexus.

“The fatal accident occurred when the driver of the Lexus car drove recklessly and rammed into the moving truck, and, as a result, the Lexus somersaulted,” she explained.

According to her, the Sienna hit the Lexus as well, trapping it and its occupants.

She explained further: “Ademola Ayinla Timothy was rescued and rushed to the hospital, but he did not make it; all affected and damaged vehicles have been evacuated and recovered to the station.”

Prophet sentenced to death for using LASU student for ritual

An Osun State High Court sitting in Ikire, on Monday, convicted and sentenced to death Prophet Philip Segun, 42, and Owolabi Adeeko, 23, for killing Ms Favour Daley-Oladele, a final year student of the Lagos State University.

Delivering her judgment, Justice Christiana Obadina also convicted and sentenced Mrs Bola Adeeko, 46, (the mother of Owolabi Adeeko), to two years imprisonment for eating the heart of late Ms Daley-Oladele.

Obadina said the prosecution counsel proved their case beyond reasonable doubt and so therefore she found the convicts guilty.

The Prosecution led by the State Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Osun Ministry of Justice, Mrs Adekemi Bello, had told the court during trial that the convicts killed their victim on Dec. 8, 2019.

Bello also informed the court how the Ogun State Police Command were able to arrest Prophet Philip Segun and  Owolabi Adeeko over the killing of Ms Oladele, a final year Sociology student at the Lagos State University.

She told the court that Adeeko had confessed to killing Ms Favour Daley-Oladele, narrating that he killed Ms Daley-Oladele (his girlfriend) and used her heart to prepare a money ritual meal for his mother in connivance with Prophet Philip Segun.

Bello said that the charges of  conspiracy and murder leveled against the convicts contravened Sections 324 and 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Laws of Osun State 2002.

The prosecution counsel during the trial called nine witnesses, including a police investigating officer, and also tendered several exhibits before the court to prove the case against the convicts.

Mr Adeshina Olaniyan, the defence counsel, however, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his clients.

Justice Obadina in her judgement sentenced Owolabi Adeeko and Prophet Philip Segun to death by hanging on the count of murder of Ms Oladele and 14 years imprisonment for conspiracy.

The judge equally sentenced Mrs Bola Adeeko (mother of Owolabi Adeeko) to two years imprisonment for eating human flesh.

It would be recalled that Owolabi Adeeko on Dec. 8, 2019, lured Favour Oladele (his supposed girlfriend) from Mowe, Ogun State to Osun, on the pretext of taking her to meet his uncle at Ikoyi-Ile.

Adeeko, however, killed Ms Oladele after she got to Osun and her body was dismembered and used to prepare money ritual soaps by Prophet Philip Segun (a prophet of a Cherubim and Cherabum Church) while her heart was eaten by Mrs Adeeko.

LASU school of communication, scholars pay tribute to Lai Oso

Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunde-Bello,Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), said that the late Prof. Olayiwola Oso contributed to the largely progressive movement and healthy development of education in Nigeria.

Olatunji-Bello, represented by Prof. Adenike Boyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), said this at a Day of Tributes organised for the late professor by the Faculty of Communications and Media Studies, LASU, in Lagos.

She said that he was a very great man who effortlessly demonstrated common sense in all his affairs, a respected Pan-Nigerian and formidable comrade of his immediate community.

“We recognise Oso’s large heartedness and legacy. We also praise his generosity of spirit and magnanimous nature.

“During his lifetime, he contributed hugely as a member of Senate. He excelled as a past Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.

“However, I consider him a fine Nigerian Philosopher of Education, an administrator, a friend, for all who welcomed him.

“He was an inspiration to a new generation of researchers, and above all, a brilliant man who selflessly gave his all to the service of the university,” Olatunji-Bello said.

She said that they were consoled by the fact that he lived a good life and touched as many lives as he could.

“We hope that his family and close friends will be consoled by the great memories he has left behind.

“Finally, on behalf of the university governing council and senate, I commiserate with the immediate family, particularly his amiable wife and children, staff, students and associates on the demise of a prominent member of LASU,” Olatunji-Bello said.

Prof. Sunday Alawode, Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, described Oso as “the legend of our time, lifter of careers, teacher of teachers and professor of professors”.

Alawode said that he gave up himself in the service of humanity.

Prof. Rotimi Olatunji, former Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, said that this was a collective loss but more importantly a personal loss to him and his family.

Olatunji said he was a big brother, friend, counselor, boss, prayers partner and most of all a mentor.

“We are proud of his legacies and we should sustain the good memories,” he said.

Mr Adeleye Ajayi, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos Chapter, said that Oso’s death was a colossal loss because he built many people positively.

Ajayi said that they had close relationship right from being his senior in secondary school and later as his lecturer.

“I know his legacy lives on,” he said.

Prof. Umaru Pate, President, Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), said that the combined qualities endeared Oso to the younger generation of media and communication scholars .

Pate, also the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Kashere, Gombe, said that professionals constantly sought his support and mentorship.

“Oso held the firm conviction that the meeting of the gown and town will benefit mass communication and media fields for the maximum impacts of both professions on democracy and development.

“He pursued this conviction relentlessly and his death is a collective loss,”he said.

Some education and media institutions were also present to pay their tributes.

They include Channels Group, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Yaba College of Technology and Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria.

Late Prof. Oso, born on Oct. 19, 1955, made his mark in the field of communication and media studies before his exit from the world in June.

He was  a major pillar in Nigeria’s premier school of communication in LASU, now known as Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, and became a Professor of Mass Communication in 2011 at the university.

Oso died in a car accident that occurred on June 24, when he was returning from Delta State University, Abraka, where he had gone to examine some masters and PHD students.

  • Ex-Gov El-Rufai speaks on how leadership should be like in Nigeria

Ex-Gov El-Rufai speaks on how leadership should be like in Nigeria

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has harped on the need to practice the culture of citizens-centred governance in the country.

Malam El-Rufai stressed that citizens-centred governance should be encouraged in the country to drive even development.

El-Rufai spoke on Sunday at the launch of an autobiography and retirement programme of Prof. Ishaq Akintola in Lagos.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Akintola, a Lagos State University (LASU) lecturer, doubles as the Founder of Muslim Rights Concerns (MURIC).

He bows out of the university service on Monday, on attainment of the statutory retirement age of 70, and the book, entitled “My Jihad”,  x-rayed his activist struggles and achievements through perseverance, to encourage young social crusaders.

El-Rufai, who was the keynote speaker and awardee at the programme, said with the present political advancement of the country, any political mobilisation based on ethnic or religious leaning was bound to fail.

He said that the enthronement of Tinubu-Shettima was a repeat of Abiola-Kingibe’s feat.

According to him the sound-footing with which the Tinubu leadership was going had deflected the ranks of those that did not see any good in the same faith ticket that propelled them to power.

“As a people, the earlier we distil ourselves from the primordial ethnoreligious perception of things, especially as it concerns national leadership, the better for us.

“The way with which the present administration at the centre is changing things for the common good of the Nigerian people within a short period shows that leadership should be hinged on merit and not entitlement basis.

“We must de-emphasise religion and ethnic colouration for us to build a society where no one should be discriminated against on the basis of ethnic nationality, religion or political leaning.

“As members of the two major religious groups in the country, if we find ourselves in public positions, we should ensure we practice the basic principles of leadership as encapsulated in both Christian and Islamic religions.

“Both religions espoused the culture of good leadership, but some individual persons tend to do that which is at variance with the scriptures,” he said.

He regretted that leadership choice based on entitlement in Kaduna State plunged the state into protracted crisis in the bygone years.

The former governor, however, said a recent change in the old tradition of leadership choice had changed things for the better.

He described the South-Western part of the country as a tolerant society and encouraged them to continue with such spirit for the development of the country.

The former governor expressed delight in the tempo of religious activism of the celebrator with his MURIC organisation.

El-Rufai said that the crusader, through his preaching and bridge-building across the divide, was instrumental to the power shift from the North to the South in 2023.

He commended the celebrator for his vigour in the pursuit of uprightness and a just Nigerian society, praying that Allah would continue to grant him wisdom to do his work.

At the event, the former Kaduna Governor was awarded the symbol “Icon of Ariwa Intigrity” for his service to humanity.

Other awardees include former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami and former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Muiz Banire.

The event drew personalities from academia, state actors, religious groups and the corporate world.

On efforts to engender a competitive workforce in the state, the Governor said: “We are committed to improving the quality of human resource in the public service.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Thursday gave N10 million as appreciation to the best graduating student in the history of Lagos State University (LASU), Miss Aminat Yusuf.

Aminat of the 2021/2022 academic session, Faculty of Law, finished with the perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00 (First Class Honours).

Speaking at the 26th convocation and 40th anniversary of LASU, Sanwo-Olu said N5 million of the gift was his personal donation while the other N5 million came from Lagos State government.

“I congratulate Miss Aminat Imoitesemeh Yusuf on her excellent academic performance which reflects her exceptional brilliance, hard work, sacrifice and focus.

“I am pleased to announce a personal donation of N5 million and an additional N5 million from the state government to recognise her outstanding achievement. Well done Aminat!

“To all the graduating students who chose Lagos State University as their institution of choice and have gone through a robust training, I say big congratulations.

“I know that you are all eager to positively impact and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of this great nation.

“It is my fervent hope and prayer that you all will be worthy ambassadors of this great citadel of learning,’’ the governor said.

Sawo-Olu noted that in the past 40 years, LASU had lived up to the expectations of its founding fathers.

He said that attaining 40 years of excellence was no mean feat and congratulated LASU for remaining steadfast in its commitment to the provision of high standard of education.

According to him, LASU’s high standard of education has produced highly-skilled men and women over the years, many of whom are being celebrated in Nigeria and abroad.

“I am equally impressed by the many achievements of the university which have received national and international recognitions.

“In 2018, the World Bank selected and designated LASU as one of 16 Nigerian universities recognised as `Africa’s Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

“LASU has started the admission of international students to the programme,’’ the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu commended the university’s management for maintaining uninterrupted academic sessions, and for aggressively pursuing the promotion of vigorous research and teaching in line with global best standards.

He noted that beyond churning out graduates from universities regularly, the essence of education was to meet societal needs.

The governor charged universities to ensure that their curricula were at par with best international standards.

“This is necessary to reverse the negative effect that the scourge of education tourism is having on our young ones and on our development,’’ Sanwo-Olu stressed.

  • Aminat Yusuf: LASU best graduating student shares inspiring success story

Aminat Yusuf: LASU best graduating student shares inspiring success story

The best graduating student for the 2021/2022 set in Lagos State University (LASU) , Ojo, Aminat Yusuf, says right mentoring by lecturers, hard work and God’s guidance were major factors for her success.

Yusuf, whose father is a journalist and mother a business woman, also thanked her parents for motivating and inspiring her to achieve the  feat.

She spoke in an interview on Wednesday, in Lagos, in which she shared her experience during her undergraduate days.

Yusuf, an Edo indigene, finished with a Cumulative Grade Point Average  (CGPA) of 5.00 (First Class Honours).

She said that the listed factors helped her to be the best graduating student of her set and in LASU’s years of existence.

“The events of the past few days have motivated me to share in brief my story, in a bid to inspire many others who are in similar situation as I was and are striving towards excellence,” she said.

Yusuf said this was considering the financial situation of her parents, coupled with the fact that was the first child.

”I called for financial support  only under compelling circumstances, after I have exhausted all options.

“As a result, I experienced some serious financial constraints during my two plus four years stay at LASU.

“In 200 Level,  second semester, just because I needed to get a browsing phone and get trained in computer skills, I saved up about 90 per cent of my feeding allowance,” Yusuf said.

She said that she settled for garri and groundnuts for a larger part of the semester, which one of her friends considered absurd and told every available listener.

“For most part of my days an undergraduate, I lived in the university premises, because I had no hostel, and going home everyday would have been absolutely inconvenient.

“The school had a stand-by security and standard lighting system, so, it was safe for me; my major challenge was having to attend lectures everyday in a neatly ironed white and black dress, acting like everything was perfect,” Yusuf said.

She also spoke on her first day in LASU for the physical screening, towards admission into diploma in law programme.

“I remember fantasising about achieving a remarkable feat in this prestigious university.

“I first did Diploma in Law programme, which runs for two years, in which students are taught compulsory law courses, with a view to offering direct entry admission to top class students.

“I studied really hard and prayed so fervently towards achieving excellence; I graduated from the programme with a CGPA of 4.98 and this was the best in my set.

“The possibility of graduating with such grade motivated the yearning to graduate with a perfect CGPA at the undergraduate level,” Yusuf said.

She called on well-meaning Nigerians to invest in the education sector and lauded the passing into law of the Student Loan Act in the country.

“I believe this will no doubt be of immeasurable value to our education system.

“While I struggled financially through my education, I don’t desire such hardship for students coming behind us, especially the female students,”Yusuf said.

She appreciated the LASU management for sustaining the congenial and conducive environment that contributed to her excellent performance.

“I am deeply grateful to my parents for their sacrifice, unwavering support towards my education.

“My parents really motivated me from their different careers; my father is a journalist while my mother is a business woman.

“Thanks to my faculty lecturers for their reflex of excellence, commitment and dedication teaching us to be the best.

“I will like to use this opportunity to launch a YouTube channel tagged “Learning Law with Aminat* with a goal of  giving back to society through my immediate community,”Yusuf said.
