LASU management reacts to killing of former student

The management of the Lagos State University (LASU),Ojo, has assured the entire students of the institution that all issues surrounding the attack on one of its former students and a staff member will be adequately addressed.

Mr Ademola Adekoya , the Coordinator of the Centre for Information Press and Public Relations,LASU, gave the assurance in a statement he signed and released to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

Adekoya said that the management commended the students’ union and the entire students for their maturity and restraint since the attack by suspected armed robbers on the former student and a staff member of LASU occurred.

“The management received with great shock, the report of an attack on a former student of the university, Mr. Nurudeen Alowonle, and a staff member, Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi, a Senior Assistant Registrar, which led to the untimely death of Alowonle.

“The incident took place in the evening of Wednesday , Aug.18, outside the university campus, along the Egbeda-Igando Road.

“The university management is deeply saddened by the incident and expresses its heartfelt condolences to the immediate and extended families of the deceased, his colleagues, friends and the students’ union,” he said.

Adekoya added that since the sad incident occurred, the social media had been circulating several accounts, many of which were inaccurate and misleading, of circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

“We have refrained from making a hurried statement until now in order to ascertain the facts considering the very sensitive nature of the incident,” he said in the statement.

    Adekoya said that the university was putting the true position about the incident before the public based on the outcome of its investigations as follows;

“That the deceased former student, Alowonle ,was yet to receive his certificate due to an ongoing disciplinary case that he was facing in the university and a panel presiding over his case began sitting in 2019.

“The case continued until 2020 but the panel could not sit due to the COVID-19 pandemic then. He was, however, invited by the panel, along other students who had ongoing disciplinary cases to defend themselves.

“Alowonle appeared before the panel that day and was even the first student attended to by the panel, and his case was concluded before 2.00 p.m.

“He ostensibly remained on the university campus until late in the evening during which time he met up with Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi,” the statement said.

Adekoya said that the duo stayed at the university senior staff club until past 8.00 p.m., after which they left together through the Iba Gate of the university for their destinations.

“Unable to get vehicles at the school junction as it was late in the day, the duo were said to have trekked several meters away from the gate ostensibly in search of a vehicle.

“Unfortunately, they were attacked by suspected men of the underworld, dispossessed them of their valuables and shot them.

“The staff member, Majekodunmi, was lucky to have escaped with gunshot wounds and eventually got helped by passers-by to a nearby hospital, but the former student did not survive the attack.

“The body of the deceased was said to have been deposited in a mortuary in Lagos, while the injured staff member is currently receiving treatment at the University Health Centre and responding well to treatment,” he said.

Adekoya said that the university security department was working with the security agencies to investigate the sad incident with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to book.

”I urge you to kindly consider your appointment and this inauguration as a call to duty and service to your fatherland.

”The only way you can justify the confidence reposed in you by the State Government, is by working tirelessly to ensure that the existing peace and industrial harmony in the university is sustained and even improved upon.

”As the supreme governing authority of the University, I charge you to give top priority to implementation of quality policies and programmes that will accelerate the pace of development and growth of the university to make it rank among the best in the world.

”One of the recommendations is for the dissolution of the previous Governing Council and the removal of the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Council.

”Based on the conviction by the State Government that the Panel did a thorough job and the report was not based on biases or sentiments, the report of the panel was upheld and the existing Governing Council was then dissolved accordingly.

The governor assured that the other aspect of the Panel’s recommendations would be implemented, in line with the relevant provisions of the law and in the overall interest of the students and the public.

BREAKING: Sanwo-Olu fires LASU Council, orders fresh process for VC appointment

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has accepted the recommendations of the Special Visitation Panel on the appointment of the 9th Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Lagos State University (LASU).

The governor mandated the dissolution of the Governing Council and the removal of the Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman for blatant violations of the extant laws guiding the appointment of a VC.

Sanwo-Olu cancelled the second failed exercise to appoint the 9th Substantive Vice-Chancellor.

He cited the flagrant contravention of extant laws, breach of due process, failure and disregard to follow laid down criteria guiding the process for the appointment as publicly advertised.

A statement by Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information said in due course, a new Governing Council for LASU will be constituted.

“The reconstituted Council shall conduct a new process for the appointment of the 9th Vice-Chancellor”, Omotoso noted.

Members of the Joint Council and the Senate Committee who participated in the two failed exercises of 2020 and 2021 to appoint a 9th Vice-Chancellor are exempted from further participation in the VC appointment process.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor and management of the University were directed to elect new council members from the Senate.

The Registrar and Secretary to Council were ordered to proceed on leave with immediate effect till the end of the process for the appointment of the VC.

The state government said they failed to advise the Joint Council and Senate Committee against taking wrong decisions, which were against the provision of the law during the two failed exercises of 2020 and 2021.

An Acting Registrar will superintend over the new exercise, while the Acting VC is to forward to Sanwo-Olu, through the Surrogate Council (Special Adviser on Education), the list of all the Deputy Registrars of LASU for the purpose of appointing an Acting Registrar.

“The Governor, following the recommendation of the Special Visitation Panel, shall be setting up a full Visitation Panel for Lagos State University immediately”, the statement added.

Ogun gov gives best 2020 LASU graduating student bungalow, N2m

Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun has donated a two-bedroom bungalow and N2 million to the 2020 overall best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) Oladimeji Shotunde, an indigene of the state.

The governor made the announcement during a celebration of Ogun academic laureates 2021, held at the Obas Complex, Abeokuta, on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor also gifted Mr Ademola Adeeko, of Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, winner of 2020 African Union Continental Teacher’s Award, a two-bedroom bungalow.

The governor announced that the state government would also set up an education endowment fund for Miss Faith Odunsi of the Ambassadors College, Ota, in Ogun, winner of Global Open Mathematics Tournament.

He noted that the event was another symbolic confirmation of the status of the state, not only as the education capital of Nigeria, but as the intellectual melting-pot in Nigeria.

Abiodun said that education remained one of the biggest industries in the state and one of the proudest legacies bequeathed to it by her founding fathers, promising that the government would sustain the legacy.

“This is why immediately on assumption of office on May 29, 2019, we declared a state of emergency on education. It was a methodical and calculated approach to rescue the education sector from the dwindling fortunes inflicted on it by the indifference of the past.

“What could have happened to the education of the state that produced the likes of Prof. Wole Soyinka, the first Nigerian and African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature; Prof. Thomas Lambo, the first professor of Psychiatric Medicine in Nigeria?

He listed others produced by the state as Prof. Biyi Afonja, Professor of Statistics; Prof. Olikoye Ransome Kuti, the renowned Paediatrician; Emeritus Prof. Theophilus Ogunlesi, the first Professor of Medicine in Nigeria; Prof. Oyinade Olurin, the first female Professor of Medicine, Prof. Anthony Asiwaju, foremost Historian.

Abiodun said that the present administration focused on infrastructure development, human capital development, provision of conducive environment, among many others, to redeem the sector and restore the lost glory.

He assured the people that the state government would continue to put measures in place toward providing quality education necessary for the development of the state.

The governor charged teachers, as important stakeholders, to continue to discharge their professional duties creditably beyond the new demands of COVID-19.

He appealed to teachers to ensure that the children were adequately catered for physically, mentally and socially in preparation for future challenges.

NAN reports that Soyinka; Prof. Isiaq Oloyede, Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB); and Prof. Anthony Asiwaju, Professor of History, joined the event virtually.

  • Name LASU after Jakande, Lagos prominent indigenes tell Sanwo-Olu

Name LASU after Jakande, Lagos prominent indigenes tell Sanwo-Olu

A group of Lagos Prominent indigenes has implored Governor Babajide SanwoOlu to name Lagos State University (LASU) after the first civilian governor, late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande for his meritorious services to the state.

This request was contained in a Press statement issued by their spokesman, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri in Lagos at the weekend.

“The Late Jakande founded and established the pioneer university and nurtured it to maturity.

“Other state universities in the country were named after their pioneer founders included Ambrose Alli University in Edo State, Adekunle Ajasin University in Ado Ekiti and Olabisi Onabanjo in Ogun State,” the lndigenes reminded Governor SanwoOlu.

According to the Lagos lndigenes, Alhaji Jakande deserved such honour as his works in the state were yet to be surpassed.

“He had done more than any governor dead or living. His legacies included the Lagos Epe- Expressway, Lagos- Badagry Expressway and the Banana Estate, lkoyi amongst others.

“The scripting of governance in Lagos State cannot be chronicled without Jakande as one of the chief-protagonists and, we dare say, inadequately sung heros of our nation,” the group stated.

The group pointed out that an elegy was not befitting to capture the life of such a man as Alhaji Jakande, rather an eulogy would do.

“Alhaji Lateef Jakande made way to history books by sheer completeness in biography, excelling personally, professionally and politically.

“A simple, unassuming, small-statured man with an ‘iroko’ personality, LKJ during his lifetime, stood tall as a role model to many, whether old or young, political or apolitical, Muslim or Christian, Southerner, Westerner or Northerner.

“Lagosian by roots, we dare say he was a nationalist and knew no ethnic bigotry.
Born on the 23rd day of July, 1929 in the Epetedo area of Lagos Island, LKJ was a journalist per excellence and became Governor of Lagos State from 1979-1983.

“He was later appointed Minister of Works under the Sanni Abacha’s military regime.

“As Governor, LKJ stretched forth his hands as farthest as he could to reach the poorest grassroots through his housing and neighbourhood primary and secondary educational programmes, noted the group.

The Prominent lndigenes recalled how Jakande envisioned the Lagos State University and his administration conceptualised and actualised the Lagos-Badagry Expressway that opened that sector of the State for development.

The Lagos Metroline (LML) project was his brainchild, they also recalled.

” lt was of particular note that throughout his lifetime, Alhaji contentedly lived in his personal house in the Ilupeju area of Lagos and used his personal car, even when he was governor.

“What manner of man! His visionary leadership is peerless and he would easily remain one of the best public office holders in the political history of Nigeria; last of the Titans.

“A true Awoist with a culture of progressivism and an unbending tenacity for the welfare and the uplift of the masses, he has effortlessly become a ‘political allusion’ and metaphor for performance, not just in Lagos State, but across the country.

“Alhaji Lateef Jakande lived for the good of others, state and country and his people-oriented policies and legacy of standing for all would long be remembered.

“The former minister is a ‘personification’ of simplicity, honesty, dedication and selflessness. His life, not his death, drives home the sermon.

“May Almighty Allah grant his noble soul unimpeded access and permanent residence in Aljanah Firdaus. Amin!”, the prayed.
