    Nigerian lawmaker kills gunman in midnight attack

    Gunmen stormed the home of a House of Representatives member, Abdullahi Balarabe Salame, Friday midnight.

    They attacked his residence in the Bado area of Sokoto around 3am.

    Salame, who represents Gwadabawa/Illela federal constituency, revealed that he killed one of the assailants.

    “I was attacked in my house in Sokoto by armed robbers. But by Allah’s powers, I was able to shoot and kill one, and injured some”, he said.

    The lawmaker also shared photos of the foiled attack.

    Salame, a former Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, is a 2023 governorship aspirant.

     

    “They came to destroy him. Allah (SWT) did not give them the opportunity because Allah (SWT) promised to protect anyone who stands for truth and trust.

    “This attack is not the first time. It has been done to the people who stand because the society is facing this kind of challenge”, a supporter, Bilal Goronyo wrote on Facebook.

    Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident.

     

    The spokesman, ASP Muhammad Sadiq said the robbery attempt was thwarted by the swift response of the joint metropolitan Police Patrol.

    Sadiq noted that an investigation had commenced and assured that operatives were on the trail of the gang.

    “The command also calls for calm and enjoins residents of Sokoto to promptly tender any useful information that could speed up the arrest of the perpetrators or help the ongoing investigation”, he said.

    Ex-Rivers lawmaker dies ten days after wife’s death

    A former member of the House of Representatives, Jerome Eke, has died few days after losing his wife identified as Joan.

    Eke represented Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between 2015 and 2019.

    It was gathered that the former federal lawmaker passed on last Friday, barely 10 days after his wife died, though the cause of death was not disclosed.

    Eke’s kinsman and predecessor in the House of Representatives, Ogbonna Nwuke, confirmed the former lawmaker’s death.

    Nwuke, who is the Rivers State spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, describe Eke as an “astute campaigner and jolly good fellow’, saying his demise is a big loss to the Etche people.

    “He (Eke) was a jolly good fellow, a very astute campaigner and he was very close to me regardless of our political differences. It is a great loss for the Etche nation,” Nwuke said.

    Also, a councillor and leader of Etche Legislative Assembly, Blackson Nwayanwu, said, “Yes, he (Eke) is actually dead. But I don’t know the details yet. His wife too is dead”, he said.

    Gunmen abduct ex-Bauchi lawmaker, Ningi

    A former member of the Bauchi Assembly, Abdulmumuni Ningi, has been abducted by gunmen.

    According to reports, the former lawmaker was whisked away by gunmen around 8:00pm on Thursday within Bauchi metropolis.

    Confirming the incident to newsmen Friday, Bauchi police spokesman ,DSP Ahmed Wakili, said the command reliably gathered Ningi was trailed by his four abductors.

    They were said to have driven in a gold coloured car with which he was trailed to his house around the BSADP area at Isa Yuguda Guest House.

    He added that the kidnappers, who were fully armed with guns, seized their victim and drove away with him in the car they brought .

    Wakili said his whereabouts is unknown at the moment as no demand has been made by the abductors.

    Umahi still remains our leader, friend in PDP – Lawmaker

    A federal lawmaker, Chief Sylvester Ogbaga, says Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi remains the leader and friend of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, notwithstanding his defection to the All Progressives Party (APC).

    Ogbaga, representing Abakaliki/ Izzi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, stated this at Isu, Onicha Local Government Area on Sunday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawmaker spoke, while interacting with newsmen on the sidelines of the distribution of items to the indigents by Ebele and Anyi Chuks Foundation, on Sunday.

    NAN also reports that animosities had broken out between supporters PDP and APC supporters in the state, following Umahi’s recent defection.

    Ogbaga, a fourth-term member of the lower legislative chamber, stated that although Umahi had joined APC, he rose to political stardom on the platform of PDP.

    ”We have no two governors in Ebonyi, and we expect him as our leader to address the threats to PDP members and the general insecurity in the state.

    ”It is still surprising that Umahi, who remains our friend and brother, joined APC when we were expecting the party to meet the expectations of Nigerians,” he said.

    Ogbaga called on the governor to address the human resources aspect of his administration and arrest the present situation in the state.

    ”We call on our very friendly governor, who has constructed lots of concrete roads and flyovers, among others, to pay special attention to stomach infrastructure.

    ”We also call on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to address the issue of insecurity in the country.

    ”This is because farmers are adversely affected by this development and if not checked, we may be drifting toward food crisis,” he said.

    The lawmaker commended the founder of the foundation, Dr Ifeanyichukwu Odii, for his massive empowerment of the people and called on other wealthy Nigerians to emulate him.

    ”People like Odii deserve to be given national awards because they have assisted the needy in the society without holding governmental or political positions,” he said.

    A member of the Taraba state house of assembly representing Nguroje state constituency, Bashir Mohammed has been kidnapped by gunmen in the early hours today.

    Nduka Obaigbena joins Sam Amuka, Segun Osoba as NPAN Patron Residents of his area in Jalingo, said the gunmen stormed the lawmakers house and shot sporadically before whisking him away around 1.30am.

    According to one of them, “we couldn’t sleep last night, heavy gun shots started around 1:40am to 1:45am as they are leaving.”

    Police arrest 18-year-old boy, three others for killing Bauchi lawmaker

    Bauchi State Police Command said it has arrested three suspects who were accused of killing a serving member of the State House of Assembly, the late Musa Mante Baraza.

    The late lawmaker, who represented Dass State Constituency, was reportedly slain in his residence in Dass Council, while two of his wives and his one-year-old daughter were kidnapped on August 13.

    According to the authorities, while Mante was killed, his family spent one week with the unknown gunmen before they were released.

    The suspects were arrested three months after by the police.

    Spokesman of the Command, Ahmed Wakil said, “One Abdulrazak Mohammed, 29 years, Abdulmumini Umar, 29 years, Yusuf Mohammed, 18 years and Mas’ud Hassan, 22 years, all of Bauchi town, were arrested in connection with the killing.

    Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is conducting by-election for the Constituency today to replace the late lawmaker. He was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    There has been serious battle between the bigwigs of the parties on who replaces him.

    The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who recently rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC), is working to favour his party. Also, the State Governor, Bala Mohammed has vowed to claim victory in Dogara’s Constituency.

    Serving Imo APC lawmaker sent to jail

    A member of the Imo House of Assembly, Hercules Okoro has been remanded in an Owerri correctional facility for assault.

    An Owerri Magistrate Court, presided over by D.V. Okoroji made the order on Monday.

    Okoro, a member of the All Progressives Congress, represents Ohaji Egbema State Constituency in the state assembly.

    Okoro was arrested on 13 November following an altercation between him and deputy speaker, Amarachi Iwuanyanwu also an APC member.

    On Monday, Okoro was arraigned, charged with an eight count assault occasioning harm.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Before Okoro was remanded in prison, his lawyer Mr Amandibuogu Osondu asked for his bail.

    He argued that the offence is bailable and that incarcerating Okorro further was against justice.

    The prosecuting counsel, Mr T Okee said that he needed more time to respond to the bail request.

    In his ruling, Magistrate Okoroji advised the parties to exchange briefs.

    He adjourned the case till 18 November.

    Ebonyi Assembly suspends Lawmaker Indefinitely

    The Ebonyi State House of Assembly on Friday suspended indefinitely, the member representing Ebonyi North West Constituency, Victor Aleke, over alleged misconduct.

    This followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the House leader, Victor Chukwu and seconded by the member representing Ohaukwu North, Chinedu Awoh.

    Chukwu also moved a motion that the Chairman of Ohaukwu Local government area, Clement Odah, be suspended alongside the lawmaker.

    He said the motion stemmed from the findings of the adhoc committee set up by the House to investigate the financial activities of Ohaukwu Local Government.

    The Leader said, findings of the Committee indicted both Aleke and Odah, and there was need for the House to sanction them to serve as a warning to others that might indulge in similar acts in future.

    Chukwu said the Committee discovered a lot of financial improprieties, including inflation of contracts sum allegedly by Odah’s administration, which according to him, shouldn’t go unpunished.

    He alleged that Aleke who was a member of the Committee became a “a green snake in a green grass”, by allegedly conniving with Odah to sabotage the assignment; an act he said was against the House rule.

    Chukwu said Aleke had committed other infractions in the past which he described as not just dishonorable, but breaches the peace of the House, adding that such should not be overlooked any longer.

    He urged the House to suspend both Aleke and Odah pending when the determination of the allegations against them.

    But the motion for the suspension of Odah was stepped down by the Speaker, Rt. Hon Francis Nwifuru, who said it would be discussed during next plenary, while Aleke’s was upheld.

    Meanwhile, there was a mild drama as the member representing Ezza South State Constituency, Hon Chris Usulor, opposed the Speaker.

    He requested that there should be headcount of the lawmakers at the plenary to know those in support or against the suspension of Aleke, before he makes his ruling.

    But Nwifuru quickly told him that his request was against the House rule.

    Aleke was not present in the chamber when his suspension took place on Friday.

    On whether the suspension of Aleke had any connection with his alleged refusal to join Governor Umahi to APC, the chairman House Committee on Information, and Member representing Ishielu South, Hon Arinze Chukwu, said it had nothing to do with defection.

    9 lawmakers test positive for COVID-19 – Speaker

    Nine members of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, as well as 35 employees of the legislative body, have tested positive for coronavirus, parliamentary speaker Mustafa Sentop said on Thursday.

    “Nine of our lawmakers have been infected with the coronavirus, four of them are receiving treatment in hospitals.

    “In addition, the coronavirus was detected in 35 of our employees,” Sentop said while addressing the parliament.

    The country has seen an increase in the daily increment of COVID-19 cases since late July following the removal of the majority of the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic.

    According to the health authorities, Turkey has so far confirmed more than 53,800 infections, including 1,015 fatalities.

    BREAKING: Lagos Assembly spokesman, Tunde Buraimoh is dead

    The Lawmaker representing Kosofe constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Tunde Braimoh is dead.

    Until his death, he was the chairman house committee on information, security and strategy in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

    Tunde Braimoh had also served in the Parliament as the chairman house committee on Judiciary, petitions and LASIEC, he was also a one time chairman of Kosofe local government area, now ikosi isheri local council.

    He is survived by his wife and children.

    Confirming his death, Hon. Sanni Ganeey Okanlawon from Kosofe Constituency 1, wrote on Facebook “ONE DEATH TOO MANY, TUNDE BURAIMOH, Sun re o”.
