Defamation: 2Baba threatens Brymo with N1bn lawsuit

2face, Nigerian pop star, has threatened to sue Brymo, his colleague, for alleged defamation.

The ‘Akoko’ singer had, in a lengthy Twitter rant on Tuesday night, alleged that 2Baba “falsely” accused him of sleeping with his wife.

The artiste also alleged that he was attacked by men loyal to the ‘True love’ crooner over reasons that weren’t exactly established.

On Thursday, Brymo took to Twitter to share a court document sent to him by 2Baba’s lawyer alleging defamation.

In the letter, 2Baba’s lawyers said Brymo’s claims caused his family “unspeakable distress” and damages.

Describing Brymo’s claims as false, 2Baba demanded an apology and threatened to seek N1 billion in damages.

According to 2Baba’s lawyers, the singer will go to court should Brymo fail to retract his statement within two days.

“The baseless and false allegations have caused unspeakable distress to our client and his family,” the letter read.

“You have also caused our client’s estimation to be lowered in the estimation of his friends, business associates, and wider members of the public, and further caused him a significant loss of business.

“Our client will give you the benefit of a doubt, perhaps you were inspired to spew such nonsense after one of such self-confessed episodes of ‘spending days getting high and philandering’.

“We demand that, within 48 (forty-eight) hours of receipt of this letter, you withdraw your statements, and publish on your entire social media accounts an unreserved apology to our client and his wife.

“Should you fail or refuse to meet our demands, we shall perfect our client’s instructions to pursue redress by seeking no less than one billion naira in damages against you in court.”

In reaction to the threat, Brymo wrote on Twitter: “I’ll advise they go to court. I insist on all my tweets asserted.”

Brymo wrote in another tweet: “Bros…your reign is over, stay at home…start a farm.Na music we dey do for here, no be godfather we dey form”.

Rihanna drops lawsuit against her dad

Popular pop star artist Rihanna Robyn Fenty has dropped her lawsuit against her dad Ronald Fenty. This is coming years after accusing him of using her fame in his favour.

Rihanna, who was to appear in court on 22 September, approached the court to seek dismissal for her lawsuit against her dad, stating that she wants to reach an agreement outside of court, in order to avert a spectacle around their legal proceedings.

Rihanna’s legal action against her dad was instituted in 2019, alleging that he was using the family name to promote his venture Fenty Entertainment in 2019, alongside Mr Moses Perkins, who she alleged has been soliciting business by falsely acting as her agent.

Despite having no authority to act on his daughter’s behalf, Ronald is said to have booked her on a $15million tour in Latin America and two concerts, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for $400,000.

While Rihanna was taking legal action against her father, the two remained in contact.

  • Uber drivers to receive $20m pay in legal battle settlement

Ride-hailing firm, Uber has agreed to pay $20 million to settle a lawsuit brought by drivers nearly six years ago.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the settlement is coming after the drivers filed new settlement agreement in a federal court in San Francisco late on Monday night.

Uber drivers had argued in the lawsuit that they are employees, not independent contractors, as Uber has classified them, and therefore entitled to certain wage protections and reimbursement for their expenses.

The settlement amount is one-fifth of the settlement offer Uber proposed in 2016 to resolve the case, valued at up to $100 million, which US District Judge Edward Chen at the time rejected as inadequate.

A California Supreme Court ruling last year made it much more difficult for companies like Uber to argue that their drivers are independent contractors, a decision that poses a threat to Uber’s business model.

In a statement, an Uber spokesman said “Uber has changed a lot since 2013,” and highlighted new programs and technology improvements to help drivers.

“We’re pleased to reach a settlement on this matter and we’ll continue working hard to improve the quality, security and dignity of independent work,” the spokesman said.

The settlement covers drivers in California and Massachusetts who drove for Uber from August 2009 through February of this year, according to the filing.

  • Google faces lawsuit for unwanted tracking of phone locations

Google faces lawsuit for unwanted tracking of phone locations

A Californian man has filed a lawsuit against Internet search giant, Google for invading people’s privacy by tracking the whereabouts of smartphones users despite “location history” settings being turned off.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the suit filed on Friday seeks unspecified damages along with class-action status to represent all US iPhone or Android smartphone users who turned off location history in order not to have their movements logged by Google.

“Google expressly represented to users of its operating system and apps that the activation of certain settings will prevent the tracking of users’ geolocations. This representation was false,” the lawsuit read.

The suit accuses Google of violating privacy law, and cites a news report last week confirmed by university researchers.

Google did not respond to a request for comment.

After the report, Alphabet-owned Google modified its support page to read that turning off location history off “does not affect other location services on your device, like Google Location Services and Find My Device”.

Location data may also be tracked for use in other services such as maps or search, the support page indicated.

The page had previously indicated that turning location history off meant places visited were not stored by Google.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), a non-profit public interest group, said it has sent a letter to the US Federal Trade Commission to look into whether Google has violated a 2011 consent order.

“Google’s subsequent changes to its policy, after it has already obtained location data on Internet users, fails to comply with the 2011 order,” Epic quoted its letter as stating.
