EFL: West Ham, Leeds, Sunderland crash out

Jorgen Strand Larsen scored twice in two minutes as Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated West Ham United 3-2 to reach the English Football League (EFL) Cup third round.

Strand Larsen came on in the 73rd minute and struck in the 82nd and 84th minutes to seal victory at Molineux, overturning West Ham’s earlier 2-1 lead.

Lucas Paqueta had headed the visitors in front on 63 minutes, after Rodrigo Gomes had netted Wolves’ first goal of the season just before halftime.

Tomas Soucek equalised for West Ham in the 50th minute, following Hwang Hee-chan’s missed penalty for Wolves that hit the post earlier in the match.

The clash between the league’s bottom two teams added more pressure on West Ham boss Graham Potter, whose side have suffered heavy league defeats to Chelsea and Sunderland.

Promoted Leeds United were knocked out on penalties by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday after a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough, losing the shootout 3-0.

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans boycotted the match in protest at the club’s Thai ownership, and they watched from afar as their side advanced in dramatic fashion.

U.S. goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was the hero for Wednesday, saving two penalties and keeping a clean sheet in the shootout on his debut after joining the club on loan.

“I’ve only been here a few days and had to learn 10 new names.

“Then another 10 in this game. I’m glad I could help,” Horvath said at post-match.

Sunderland also crashed out on penalties, losing 6-5 to third-tier Huddersfield Town, after a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Brentford beat Bournemouth 2-0 in the only other all-Premier League tie of the night, with goals from Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago securing victory on the South Coast.

Brentford’s record signing Dango Ouattara featured as a substitute against former club Bournemouth, days after scoring on his league debut.

At Turf Moor, Burnley edged Championship side Derby County 2-1, with Oliver Sonne grabbing a stoppage-time winner for the much-changed Premier League outfit.

Wrexham earned a dramatic 3-2 win at Preston North End, with Kieffer Moore scoring in stoppage time after the hosts twice took the lead in the second-tier encounter.

League Two side Cambridge United, stunned Championship club Charlton Athletic.

The third round draw will take place after Wednesday’s matches.

Burnley, Leeds United promoted to Premier League

Burnley beat Sheffield United 2-1 to seal automatic promotion to the Premier League on Saturday with the result also sending Championship leaders Leeds United up alongside them.

Leeds had earlier thrashed Stoke City 6-0 to go top of the Championship on 94 points with two matches remaining and needed Burnley to then not lose to third-placed Sheffield United to make sure they would finish in the top two.

Burnley duly obliged with Josh Brownhill scoring twice at Turf Moor either side of Tom Cannon’s equaliser.

Scott Parker’s side, who were relegated last season, joined Leeds on 94 points to leave Sheffield United on 86 and now facing the prospect of trying to join them via the playoffs.

Joel Piroe scored a hat-trick in the opening 20 minutes for Leeds at a raucous Elland Road and added another before halftime as the hosts stormed 5-0 ahead by the interval.

Leeds are heading back to the top flight after being relegated in 2023 after three seasons in the Premier League.

Fourth-placed Sunderland are guaranteed a playoff place despite a 1-0 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers who kept alive their slim hopes of a top-six finish.

Fifth-placed Bristol City went down 3-1 at relegation battlers Luton Town, but remained above Coventry City who also lost 3-1 to bottom club Plymouth Argyle.

Seventh-placed Middlesbrough will be kicking themselves as they failed to capitalise on the defeats for Bristol and Coventry as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday despite taking an early lead.

With two games remaining Bristol City have 67 points, Coventry have 66 and Middlesbrough have 63.

Millwall and Blackburn, with 63 and 62 points respectively, are also still involved in the playoff picture.

  • Allardyce apologies to Leeds fans after failure to stop relegation

Allardyce apologies to Leeds fans after failure to stop relegation

Sam Allardyce was parachuted into Leeds United on a rescue mission to keep the club above the drop zone but was left apologising to fans.

This was after they were relegated on Sunday, saying the squad lacked the talent and depth of the top teams.

Leeds were thrashed 4-1 at home by Tottenham Hotspur though even a win would not have been enough as fellow relegation battlers Everton beat Bournemouth 1-0 to stay up.

The Yorkshire side finished second-bottom, five points adrift of the safety zone and six above Southampton.

“It’s really sad Leeds are in this position and to the fans I apologise.

“I didn’t do better and the players didn’t do better and try and win at least two out of the four games and give ourselves a better opportunity to stay in the Premier League,” Allardyce said referring to his matches in charge.

He told reporters the relegation was “professional suicide.”

Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham ran roughshod over Leeds and there was a mix of boos and muted applause from the Elland Road crowd after the final whistle blew on a dreadful season.

“Most of it comes down to how good are your players?

“These players have tried very hard and I can’t fault their effort but as a squad they haven’t been good enough by the fact that they’re in the bottom three in the Premier League.

“And I would have loved it if I could have got a little bit more out of them, so I take responsibility for that,” added Allardyce.

The 68-year-old Allardyce, Leeds’ fourth manager this season, announced his shock return to the game after two years away on May 3 by boldly saying he was “just as good” as Pep Guardiola, Juergen Klopp and Mikel Arteta.

But Leeds earned just a point out of his four games on the touchline.

“It’s tough our world when things start failing and when they start failing and confidence starts going it’s very difficult to claw it back.

“You have to just put that behind you and come back and be more determined in terms of what you’re going to achieve next year in terms of how to get out of the Championship,” he said.

Asked if he will make a pitch for the manager’s job for next season, Allardyce said there would be discussions next week, “when we get over the disappointment of getting relegated.

“The last thing I wanted was to be the man who took Leeds United down. I tried all we possibly could try to get the players to get better results.

Having quality players, Allardyce said, was all about recruitment “…because better players and more intelligent players make you a better coach, make everybody at the club better, make it a happy club going forward.”

Needing nothing short of a victory on Sunday to have a chance of avoiding relegation, the much-travelled manager was asked why he named six defenders for the game.

“Why do you think that was?” Allardyce snapped. “See, you don’t need to be a head coach or anything like that to understand the need for a clean sheet. Because we had conceded 74 goals.”

“I’m sorry for getting a bit touchy, but it is a bad day for me,” he added.

EPL: Everton escape relegation, Leicester, Leeds go down as 2022/23 season rounds up

Everton football club for the second time in two seasons escaped relegation on the last match day.

The Tofees defeated Bournemouth by 1-0 to at Goodison park to stay afloat in the premier League thereby leaving Leicester City and Leeds city to join Southampton as relegated teams.

Leicester defeated West Ham 2-1 but still got relegated after amassing just 34 points all through the season.

Tottenham Hotspurs  walloped Leeds City 3-1 in the other survival  and continental spots battle.

Arsenal defeated Wolves 5-0 while Liverpool settled for a 4-4 draw against already relegated Southampton side at Saint Mary’s.

Brentford defeated Champions Manchester City by 1-0 while Newcastle settled for a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

  • Leicester, Leeds relegated from Premier League

Leicester, Leeds relegated from Premier League

Leicester City’s nine-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they were relegated in agonising fashion despite beating West Ham on the final day of the season.

The Foxes’ fate was out of their hands heading into the last round of fixtures, and Everton’s 1-0 victory over Bournemouth meant the 2015-16 winners slipped into the Championship by two points.

While Toffees fans were in ecstasy at Goodison Park, Leicester supporters at the King Power were left to rue a miserable campaign in which they won only nine league matches.

Leeds United has also been relegated from the Premier League as they lost their final game of the season to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Whites’ fans turned on both their team and the club’s owners as the West Yorkshire side’s three-year top-flight stay came to a meek and pitiful end at Elland Road.
  • We deserved more than Newcastle draw – Allardyce

We deserved more than Newcastle draw – Allardyce

Leeds boss Sam Allardyce felt they deserved more from their 2-2 draw with Newcastle.

Patrick Bamford missed a penalty, while Junior Firpo was sent off for Leeds in an amazing game which also saw a home fan invade the pitch and shove Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

Allardyce said: “The score line should have been a victory for us today. I believe with the spirit we showed, the commitment we showed if we’re going 2-0 up I think would have, the way we defended the game apart from silly penalties, of course, we would have won the game. The fact that we allowed ourselves to get knocked back a couple of times by missing the penalty and then conceding the penalty within two minutes and the way we stayed in the game was very really good.

“Of course, going 2-1 down again to another penalty and then coming back from that scoring, and then again the player sent off. So we shot ourselves in the foot quite often but also, we showed us enough today to say we if we cut out those mistakes we can get three points perhaps. We are playing the third in the league and nearly or should have won in my opinion, of course. But that’s down to our fault today, giving two penalties away and missing one, and even when we got a player sent off we defended exceptionally well to make sure we did get a point, because we could have easily lost again.”

On Bamford’s penalty, Allardyce also said: “Well, I left it how it used to be like before I got here. I mean, I haven’t seen them take many penalties. It is what it is, they have been what they’re doing then we cannot say ‘why didn’t somebody else take it?’.

“I would have thought if Rodrigo really wanted it he have gone and snatched it off Patrick and said ‘I’m taking this’. We see that quite a bit and then of course that puts you under even more pressure to score. So you miss it, it can happen to anybody. It happened to us today, but at the worst possible time. And that’s very unfortunate for us.”

  • EPL: Chelsea beat Bournemouth 3-1, Man City defeat Leeds 2-1 to retain top spot

EPL: Chelsea beat Bournemouth 3-1, Man City defeat Leeds 2-1 to retain top spot

After six losses in a row, Chelsea recorded their first victory under interim manager, Frank Lampard as late goals from Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix saw off Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Chelsea found the back of the net inside nine minutes when N’Golo Kante crossed from the right and Conor Gallagher found space in between defenders to head home.

However, Bournemouth hit back when they cut Chelsea open with a brilliant move that ended with Matias Vina curling a wonderful shot into the far top corner.

Blues went ahead eight minutes from time Badiashile headed home a free-kick and Felix made it three for Chelsea to wrap up a win for the Blues first time in 7 games.

The result means Arsenal must defeat Newcastle tomorrow to still be in the running to win their first premier league title in 19 years.
An Arsenal win tomorrow will reduce the deficit to just one point but City having a game in hand.

EPL: Leed’s survival hopes dealt blow by Fulham

Leeds United’s hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League were dealt another blow as Fulham condemned Javi Gracia’s side to a third successive defeat at Craven Cottage.

Second-half goals from Harry Wilson and Andreas Pereira proved enough to earn victory for the hosts, who reinforced their bid to seal a top-half finish and climbed one place to ninth.

But the loss means Leeds remain just two points above the relegation places, in 16th, before Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City directly below them play later on Saturday.

A quality first-time finish by Wilson, after Illan Meslier had got an unconvincing hand to Willian’s cross, broke the deadlock after 58 minutes.

Pereira then slotted in after Meslier again failed to effectively deal with a cross on a difficult afternoon for the Leeds goalkeeper.

Somewhat belatedly, the two goals eventually sparked Leeds into action, and Joao Palhinha’s own goal, after Patrick Bamford had redirected the ball with an outstretched leg, offered Leeds hope with 11 minutes remaining.

But despite eight minutes of stoppage time they were unable to force an equaliser.

EPL: Klopp hails Liverpool players over performance against Leeds

Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his boys played the ‘best game’ of their season against Leeds on Monday, as they stormed to a 6-1 victory at Elland Road.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota on the night ensured Liverpool ran away with six goals from the Etihad.

The result has kept their momentum alive for a place in Europe next season, whether that be the Europa League or the Conference League, and after the game Klopp insisted the result was ‘exactly what we wanted’.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ‘[I enjoyed it] a lot! I think it’s the best game we’ve played this season, from all different perspectives.

‘It was a really good game, sensational goals. Counter-pressing-wise, [the] best game, [I was] close to saying [in] decades, but it was really long ago!’

  • Salah, Jota grab doubles as Liverpool whip Leeds United 6-1

Salah, Jota grab doubles as Liverpool whip Leeds United 6-1

Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota both scored twice as Liverpool returned to winning ways in the English Premier League (EPL) with a 6-1 hammering of Leeds United on Monday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had not tasted victory in any competition since the March 5 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United but ended a five-game winless streak at their relegation-threatened hosts.

Liverpool took control through a quickfire first-half double from Cody Gakpo and Salah, although Luis Sinisterra pulled one back two minutes into the second half at Elland Road.

There was to be no dramatic turnaround as a Jota brace, either side of Salah’s second, made sure of three points before Darwin Nunez then completed the scoring off the bench.

The points moved the Reds to within six of Europa League qualification.

Leeds United should have taken the lead against the run of play when Rodrigo headed a glorious seventh-minute chance straight at Alisson from Jack Harrison’s free-kick.

But Liverpool were in front when Trent Alexander-Arnold dispossessed Junior Firpo before playing a one-two with Salah and teeing up a simple Gakpo finish for the 35th-minute opener.

Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead just four minutes later with a rasping drive past Illan Meslier after Jota’s delicate offload.

An Ibrahima Konate mistake allowed Sinisterra to race through and chip Alisson, but Leeds’ momentum was soon halted when Curtis Jones found Jota to curl past the onrushing Meslier.

Brenden Aaronson struck the upright with a whipped long-range attempt, before a selfless Gakpo pass rolled in Salah for a cool left-footed finish into the bottom-left corner.

Jota found the same corner from Jordan Henderson’s pass, with Nunez then capping the rout by latching onto Alexander Arnold’s dinked ball and dispatching past Meslier.

Klopp’s side had recorded just 13 points in their 15 Premier League away games this season prior to this trip, but Leeds United remains a happy hunting ground for the Reds.

Liverpool have not lost any of their last six league visits to Elland Road, dating back to a 4-3 defeat in November 2000.

That was when Mark Viduka scored all four Leeds United goals.

While out of the running for any silverware this term, Klopp will want his team to produce similar away performances across the remainder of the season.

This is necessary as they bid for European qualification.

However, this has been a slightly quiet season for Salah compared to his usual lofty standards, having scored 13 times in 29 league outings before this clash.

But the Liverpool man again came to the fore against Leeds United.

The forward has scored nine times against Leeds United in the Premier League, with no Reds player managing more.

Only Gordon Hodgson can match that tally in Liverpool’s entire league history.

Leeds United were thrashed 5-1 at home by Crystal Palace last time out and have now shipped 16 goals in their four league games in April.

This is more than any other team this month.

The Whites’ defensive struggles continued here, although they may have felt aggrieved with Gakpo’s opener.

This was after it appeared Alexander-Arnold handled when dispossessing Firpo in the build-up.

Liverpool now host strugglers Nottingham Forest on Saturday, when Leeds United visit Fulham.
