  • EPL: Leeds United set to hire Nigerian forward Victor Moses

Leeds United are set to replace departing midfielder Raphinha with Nigerian forward Moses Simon popularly known as daddy.

Although, Ligue 1 side Nice are also in the race to snap the Nigerian international from his present club Nantes.

With Raphinha in talks with Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona, Leeds are already looking for his replacement.

The Elland Road club is holding out for £65m for Raphinha and some of that income will be put back into the team.

Nice have an agreement in place with Nantes. Exactly what that deal looks like is not revealed. But another English Premier League side Newcastle were reportedly ready to pay £17m and £100,000-a-week for Simon this summer.

Simon, 26, is a Nigeria international, who can play all across the frontline. He is right footed, although he played the majority of last season on the left wing.

The winger scored six goals and grabbed eight assists from 30 Ligue 1 games last season. And he looks like an option to replace Raphinha.

EPL: Leeds survive relegation battle as Burnley go down

Leeds United survived relegation after claiming a dramatic added-time victory against nine-man Brentford to secure their Premier League survival.

Jack Harrison’s late strike from the edge of the penalty area sealed the win and in the end comfortably avoid the drop by three points.

But Sergi Canos looped in an equaliser two minutes before he was sent off for a second bookable offence.

With a two-man advantage, Leeds controlled the final stages, although it took Harrison’s goal to completely relieve the pressure, with goalkeeper Illan Meslier running the entire length of the field to join in the celebrations and manager Jesse Marsch flat on his back in the technical area as he was swept away by the euphoria.

It means Leeds become the first side since Wigan in 2011 to survive after starting the final day in the bottom three.

    Leeds escape on memorable day

Meanwhile Burnley lost to Newcastle by a solitary goal and booked a spot in the lower division of the English league.

The loss meant Burnley would join Norwich ,Watford in the English championship for season 2021.2022.

At the start of the day, Burnley were above Leeds on goal difference, but Jesse Marsch’s side won 2-1 at Brentford to end the Clarets’ six-year spell in the top flight.

Arteta explains playing Tomiyasu as left-back

Mikel Arteta has explained the reason for playing Arsenal right-back, Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back against Leeds United.

The Gunners had to show resilience in claiming a 2-1 win over the relegation candidates in the Premier League on Sunday.

Given the long-term absence of Kieran Tierney, Tomiyasu was tasked with filling in at left-back against the Elland Road club.

Asked about the switch for Tomiyasu, Arteta stated post-game, per the club website: “It was for today, we cannot do things thinking about the next game.

“We believe it was the right thing to do today with what we wanted to do in that side, especially what Leeds had on the side. “

Ex-Liverpool boss plays down Pogba’s impact against Leeds

Graeme Souness played down Paul Pogba’s impact in Manchester United’s 5-1 win against Leeds on Saturday, instead hailing Mason Greenwood as the “star of the show”.

The Red Devils opened the new Premier League campaign with an impressive display at Old Trafford.

But ex-Liverpool midfielder and manager Souness said the France star’s input was to be expected from someone the club paid a then-record transfer fee of €105 million (£89m) to sign in 2016.

“For me, yesterday the star of the show was Greenwood. For a young boy, I thought he was sensational,” he said on Sky Sports .

When fellow pundit Micah Richards laughed and pointed out that Pogba had four assists, Souness replied: “We expect that from a £100 million man.

EPL: Fernandes hits hat-trick as Man Utd thrash Leeds

Bruno Fernandes scored his first Manchester United hat-trick as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side overpowered old rivals Leeds to make the perfect start to the new Premier League season.

The Portugal midfielder opened the scoring on the half-hour mark at a packed Old Trafford, but Luke Ayling’s thunderous strike drew Leeds level early in the second half.

Mason Greenwood restored the hosts’ lead with a crisp finish less than two minutes later, before Fernandes’ low shot was ruled to have crossed the line by referee Paul Tierney after a check of goalline technology.

The 26-year-old quickly completed his hat-trick with a thumping finish from Victor Lindelof’s pass, before Fred added United’s fourth goal in 14 minutes from Paul Pogba’s cross – the Frenchman’s fourth assist of the afternoon.

It was Fernandes’ first hat-trick since he moved to Old Trafford in January 2020 and only the second by a Red Devils player since Robin van Persie’s title-winning effort against Aston Villa in 2013.

But the game was also a personal triumph for Pogba.

The France midfielder’s future has been the subject of intense debate as he enters the final year of his contract.

But his four assists included a sublime pass for Greenwood’s goal, and he left the field to a standing ovation 15 minutes from time as £74m new-boy Jadon Sancho was introduced for his debut.

EPL: Varane deal uncompleted as Man Utd approach Leeds United game

Raphael Varane will not be available for Manchester United’s English Premier League season-opener against Leeds United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the deal is not “100 per cent done yet”.

Having completed deals for Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho, the Old Trafford giants announced on July 27 they had struck a deal with Real Madrid for the 28-year-old defender.

Varane had to obtain a visa and undergo quarantine before undergoing his medical.

Solskjaer said the final aspects of the deal were not signed before Friday’s registration deadline for the Premier League.

“He’s not trained with us and all the dots over the i’s and we haven’t crossed the t’s yet,” the Manchester United manager said.

“Things happen and things take time and unfortunately with the isolation that delayed these things.

“It’s not 100 per cent done yet … I can’t say that he will be involved tomorrow (Saturday), (but) I can probably say he won’t be (involved) because he’s not trained with us.”

Asked what the hold-up has been and if there is any concern it will not be completed, Solskjaer said: “It always happens that there’s little things in there.

“But the big hold-up was the isolation and the quarantine, of course. He’s been in Manchester now. It’ll be done soon.”(

  • Vardy scores as Leicester City run over Leeds United to go second

Vardy scores as Leicester City run over Leeds United to go second

Jamie Vardy inspired and Youri Tielemans scored twice as Leicester City enjoyed an impressive 4-1 win at Leeds United on Monday to move up to second in the English Premier League (EPL).

The Foxes, who have now won all four away games this season, grabbed the lead in the second minute.

This was when Vardy intercepted a poor back-pass from Leeds United defender Robin Koch and set-up Harvey Barnes to slot home.

The goal came directly after an early chance for Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford, who could only head straight at Kasper Schmeichel from close range.

Brendan Rodgers’ side doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Marc Albrighton whipped in a cross.

Vardy’s stooping, angled header struck Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the face and fell to Tielemans to fire home.

Leeds United came out strongly after the break.

They pulled a goal back three minutes after the restart when a deep cross from Stuart Dallas went through a crowded box and into the net’s far corner.

Pablo Hernandez then hit the bar for Leeds United with a fine effort from the edge of the penalty box.

But Leicester City restored their two-goal advantage with a beautifully-worked third goal.

Substitute James Maddison found Cengiz Under who showed great finesse to pick out Vardy who slotted home.

The 33-year-old striker has now scored eight goals in all competitions this season with each coming away from home.

Maddison was involved with the fourth goal, in stoppage time, when Mateusz Klich challenged him from behind.

After a VAR review, referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty kick which Tielemans confidently converted.

Leicester City are now on 15 points, just one point behind leaders Liverpool and Rodgers enthused about his team.

“I thought my players were brilliant. We had to be tactically disciplined and then play when we had the ball,” he said.

“If we get to March, April and we are in that position (second), then it will be nice, but there is a long way to go,” he added.

Leeds United are 12th on 10 points and their Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa struck a self-critical tone.

“In the first 30 minutes we defended poorly and after we didn’t create enough danger. That is one of the main responsibilities of the manager,” he said.

“I am not taking the blame, just stating the players were not correctly distributed. The players are disappointed,” added Bielsa.

  • Liverpool to begin EPL title defence against Leeds

Liverpool to begin EPL title defence against Leeds

Liverpool Football Club will begin their English Premier League (EPL) title defence on Sept. 12 at Anfield when they face newly-promoted Leeds United FC.

Manchester City and Manchester United will not participate in the competition until Sept. 19, after they were given 30 days to rest following the end of their European season.

Manchester City were due to open their season against Aston Villa, and Manchester United against Burnley but those games will be moved.

Manchester United will begin the season at home to Crystal Palace on Sept. 19 while City will travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers for their opener on the same day.

Mikel Arteta will begin his first full season in charge of Arsenal with a trip to newly-promoted Fulham, while north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur host Everton in the opening weekend’s fixtures.

Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ opening matches are both scheduled for Sept. 14, with the Blues travelling to Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolves visiting Sheffield United.

Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool travel to Chelsea for their second game of the season before hosting FA Cup Champions Arsenal.

  • Leeds United back in EPL after 16-year absence

Leeds United back in EPL after 16-year absence

Leeds United returned to the Premier League after a 16-year absence on Friday as West Bromwich Albion’s loss at Huddersfield Town guaranteed them a top-two finish in the Championship.

A huge favour from Leeds’ Yorkshire neighbours, who won 2-1, meant the celebrations could start in earnest at Elland Road.

The club’s Italian owner Andrea Radrizzani will also be toasting promotion which is worth an estimated 170 million pounds.

Leeds have 87 points with two games remaining, five more than second-placed West Brom who slumped to defeat at the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday with one game left.

Leeds are six points ahead of third-placed Brentford, who have also played 44, and a point from their last two matches will ensure Marcelo Bielsa’s team rejoin the elite as champions.

They could even claim the second-tier title on Saturday if Brentford fail to win at Stoke City.

The success will be doubly sweet for Leeds who missed out on promotion last season in the playoffs despite looking favourites for automatic promotion for much of the campaign.

It also comes less than a week after the death of one of the club’s greatest players — England World Cup-winning centre-half Jack Charlton.

Three times English champions, Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in 2004 after hitting financial trouble and being forced to sell a host of big-name players such as Robbie Keane, Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer.

The problems were only just starting though and after three years in the Championship they slipped to the third tier and into administration with the future of the club in doubt.

While they eventually regained their place in the Championship in 2010 they never really challenged for promotion until the enigmatic Bielsa took charge in 2018.

They have been transformed under the former Argentina coach and can now look forward to renewing old rivalries with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool.
