  • Farcical own goal sets Leeds on a thumping 5-0 win at West Brom

Farcical own goal sets Leeds on a thumping 5-0 win at West Brom

A farcical early own goal from Romaine Sawyers summed up a miserable day for West Bromwich Albion as the English Premier League strugglers were thumped 5-0 by Leeds United on Tuesday.

Further first half goals from Ezgjan Alioski, Jack Harrison and Rodrigo, and a brilliant strike in the second half from Raphinha, gave Leeds their biggest top-flight victory since a 6-1 win at Charlton Athletic in April 2003.

It also confirmed the enormous task facing West Brom manager Sam Allardyce to keep his side up.

Leeds move up to 11th in the table with 23 points, while West Brom remained second-bottom on eight points from 16 games, five shy of safety.

The home side fell behind in the ninth minute as Sawyers put the ball into his own net.

He was pressured 25 yards from his goal, swivelled and played a back-pass to where he expected goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to be.

But the gloveman had taken up a position to the left of his goal to give Sawyers an option for the pass, and the ball nestled into an empty net, a calamity from which the home side never recovered.

The match was billed as the defensive structure of Allardyce against the swagger and verve of Leeds under their manager Marcelo Bielsa’s.

However, it proved to be a no contest as the Baggies’ wilted at the back and offered virtually nothing in attack.

  • Set-piece goals fire West Ham to 2-1 comeback win over Leeds

Set-piece goals fire West Ham to 2-1 comeback win over Leeds

Two headed goals from set pieces helped West Ham United to beat Leeds United 2-1 in their English Premier League clash at Elland Road on Friday.

Goals from midfielder Tomas Soucek and defender Angelo Ogbonna ensured that West Ham fought from a goal down to defeat the hosts.

West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski conceded a penalty in the second minute, when he brought down Patrick Bamford and seemed to have redeemed himself by saving Mateusz Klich’s spot kick.

However, a retake was ordered due to Fabianski leaving his line and Klich scored at the second attempt.

Soucek put West Ham level in the 25th minute, out-muscling defender Stuart Dallas to head the ball into the net.

The visitors took the lead thanks to Ogbonna’s far-post header from an Aaron Cresswell free kick ten minutes from time.

Now level with Chelsea as the league’s best scorers from set pieces with eight goals, the win lifts the Hammers to fifth spot in the standings with 20 points after 12 games.

Leeds remain in 14th place on 14 points.

  • EPL: Chelsea move top after coming from behind to beat Leeds

Chelsea went top of the Premier League as they came from behind to beat Leeds United in their first game in front of fans for nine months.

Former Blues striker Patrick Bamford, who spent five years at Chelsea without making a senior appearance, gave Leeds an early lead at Stamford Bridge after getting between defender Kurt Zouma and keeper Edouard Mendy.

Timo Werner then somehow managed to miss from point-blank range after Olivier Giroud’s flicked header from a corner, the Germany forward hitting the underside of the bar before Leeds cleared.

However, Giroud marked his first league start of the season with his fifth goal of the week, the scorer of all four of Chelsea’s Champions League goals away to Sevilla in midweek poking home from five yards after Reece James’ cross.

Chelsea, who welcomed 2,000 fans back to Stamford Bridge after coronavirus restrictions were eased, went ahead as Zouma headed in from Mason Mount’s corner before substitute Christian Pulisic added a late third.

Chelsea, who started the day third, are one point clear at the top.

Eberechi Eze shines as Crystal Palace thrash Leeds

Eberechi Eze registered his first Crystal Palace goal with a sublime free-kick as Roy Hodgson’s side thrashed Leeds United in an entertaining match at Selhurst Park.

Scott Dann headed in Eze’s corner to put Palace ahead after 12 minutes, before £19.5m summer signing Eze, 22, curled his set-piece expertly into the top corner.

But Bamford, who endured a difficult loan spell with Palace in 2015, took his next chance just as well, controlling Mateusz Klich’s header with his chest before firing into the bottom corner.

Palace’s two-goal advantage was restored before half-time as Helder Costa conceded an own-goal in attempting to block Patrick van Aanholt’s cross from the left.

Pascal Struijk headed narrowly wide and Ezgjan Alioski was denied as Leeds chased a second-half response, but Jordan Ayew put the result beyond doubt with Palace’s fourth on 70 minutes.

Crystal Palace moved up to sixth with victory, three points behind leaders Southampton, as Leeds dropped to 14th.

  • Bamford scores hat-trick as Leeds end Aston Villa’s winning start

Bamford scores hat-trick as Leeds end Aston Villa’s winning start

Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford scored a superb hat-trick for Aston Villa’s winning start to the season to an abrupt end with a 3-0 away victory in the English Premier League (EPL) on Friday.

After an entertaining but goalless first half, Jack Grealish went close to a stunning opener for Aston Villa in the 52nd minute.

This was when he ran from the halfway line and jinked into the penalty box before his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Three minutes later though Aston Villa found themselves behind, when a Rodrigo shot was pushed out by Emiliano Martinez and Bamford pounced to slot home the loose ball.

Bamford then made it 2-0 with a fine shot from the edge of the area in the 67th minute.

That was after a strong burst from midfield by Mateusz Klich had put Aston Villa’s defence on the back foot.

The Leeds United striker then completed his hat-trick, his smart footwork creating just enough space for a precise, curling finish after 74 minutes for his first Premier League treble.

The win moves Leeds United up to third on 10 points, albeit having played an extra game, two points behind Aston Villa.

Leaders Everton, who have 13 points, are at Southampton on Sunday.

  • Casilla gets eight-match ban for racism

Casilla gets eight-match ban for racism

Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has been banned for eight matches and fined £60,000 after being found guilty of racially abusing Charlton Athletic forward Jonathan Leko.

The 33-year-old, who denied the charge, has also been ordered to attend a face-to-face education session.

The incident took place in Charlton’s win over the Whites on 28 September.

“I do not feel at all that the guilty verdict is a clear reflection of the incident,” Casilla said in a statement.

The charge was found proven by an independent regulatory commission.

The Football Association began an investigation in October and subsequently charged Casilla with a breach of FA Rule E3.

It was alleged the Spaniard’s words “made reference to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin”, constituting an aggravated breach, and the FA granted Casilla extra time to respond to the charge.

Under rules introduced for the 2019-20 season, the minimum suspension for a player found guilty of an aggravated breach of the FA’s discrimination rules is six matches, which can be increased depending on any additional aggravating factors.
