    Leicester City appoints new manager

English club Leicester City have appointed former Queens Park Rangers head coach Marti Cifuentes as their manager on a three-year contract.

The Championship side parted ways with former manager Ruud van Nistelrooy last month following the club’s relegation to the English second tier after finishing 18th in the Premier League.

“This is a fantastic club with a proud history, and it’s a privilege for me to be asked to help write the next chapter,” Cifuentes said in a statement shared by Leicester.

The Spaniard, 43, previously coached Hammarby, whom he led to a Swedish Cup final and UEFA Conference League qualification. He took over at QPR in October 2023.

QPR put Cifuentes on gardening leave in April, ahead of their final game of the Championship season, as they finished 15th, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Leicester begin their 2025/26 Championship campaign at home against Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.

Van Nistelrooy makes unwanted EPL history with absurd stat

Ruud Van Nistelrooy brought up an abysmal Premier League record following Leicester City’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

The Foxes traveled to Stamford Bridge aiming to end their poor run of form but succumbed to Marc Cucurella’s decisive goal on the hour mark.

In the process, the Manchester United legend set an unfortunate record as his team’s losing streak extended to five across all competitions.

Among managers with at least 15 Premier League games in charge, only Mick McCarthy’s Sunderland (84%) and Russell Martin’s Southampton (81%) have a higher loss percentage than Van Nistelrooy of Leicester City (80%), who have lost 12 of his 15 matches at the helm.

The former Premier League champions, currently mired in relegation trouble with just 17 points from 28 matches, will be seeking redemption in their next clash against Manchester United on March 16.

Guardiola’s Man City celebrates landmark win over Leicester

Manchester City ended their five-game winless run as Pep Guardiola celebrated victory in his 500th game in charge with a 2-0 win at Leicester City on Sunday.

Savinho’s first-half goal and an Erling Haaland header after the break earned a much-needed three points for the faltering champions at the King Power Stadium.

It was just their second Premier League victory since the end of October, but the frailties of the last two months – where they lost nine of their previous 13 matches – were still on show.

Leicester provided a stern test and might feel they could have got something out of the match as Facundo Buonanotte hit the post and Jamie Vardy missed a key chance at 1-0 down.

While their title challenge is probably over, sitting 11 points behind leaders Liverpool who play later on Sunday.

City moved back in touch with the top four and will hope this can be a stepping stone to a full revival.

The Foxes have now lost four in a row and their bounce under new boss Ruud van Nistelrooy was restricted to two games as they remain in the relegation zone.

EPL: Chelsea duo sink Leicester in stellar performance

Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez goals secured a dominant away victory for Chelsea at Leicester.

Jackson, 23, scored his fifth goal in four consecutive away games as he outbattled defender Wout Faes to win a long punt up field, which he finished well after Fernandez played him into position in the 15th minute.

Fernandez then headed in from close range on the rebound, after goalkeeper Mads Hermansen saved Jackson’s initial effort, to seal the win.

Jordan Ayew dispatched a late penalty for Leicester in the 95th minute after Romeo Lavia fouled Bobby de Cordova-Reid in the box.

The Blues were dominant on a cold, wet afternoon at the King Power stadium, with over 66% possession throughout the 90 minutes.

It was a torrid return to Premier League football for Leicester, who lost star midfielder Harry Winks through an ankle injury in the 11th minute.

They didn’t muster a shot on goal until the 39th minute, when Kasey McAteer almost found the bottom corner on the break, then Wilfred Ndidi missed a great chance just before half-time.

But Chelsea were commanding. Noni Madueke had a goal ruled out for offside and squandered chances through Moises Caicedo and Joao Felix, who earned his first Premier League start since his last spell with the club in May 2023.

Cole Palmer also saw a close range shot cleared off the line by his own man Madueke in unfortunate circumstances shortly after half-time.

Chelsea move up to third in the Premier League table on 22 points before the rest of the weekend’s games, with Leicester remaining 16th on 10 points.

Arsenal score two stoppage time goals to beat Leicester

Arsenal scored twice in stoppage time to earn a dramatic victory over Leicester.

A Wilfred Ndidi own goal in the 94th minute and a close-range Kai Havertz strike in the ninth minute of stoppage time denied a Foxes side who were within reach of an unlikely point at Emirates Stadium after clawing back a two-goal deficit in the second half.

Gabriel Martinelli had given the dominant Gunners a deserved first-half lead when he steered home Jurrien Timber’s cross, before providing the pass for the second, converted by Leandro Trossard, on the stroke of half-time.

Leicester had managed only one touch in the Arsenal area before the break, but they reduced the arrears a little over a minute into the second half when James Justin’s header from Facundo Buonanotte’s free-kick struck Havertz on its way in.

Justin doubled his personal tally in spectacular fashion shortly after the hour mark, meeting Ndidi’s left-wing delivery with a swerving volley that beat David Raya via the inside of the post.

If Arsenal were momentarily stunned by Leicester’s recovery, they soon recovered their poise and Mads Hermansen produced two superb saves to keep the Foxes level, denying Havertz with a point-blank stop before keeping out Trossard’s shot – moments after giving the ball away inside his own area.

But Trossard’s late effort was deflected past the Danish goalkeeper by Ndidi before Havertz struck from close-range to complete the scoring.

Victory lifts Arsenal level on points with Manchester City, who could be overtaken by Liverpool if they beat Wolves at Molineux in Saturday’s late game.

    Ex-Leicester manager passes away

Former Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare sadly passed away this week.

The former West Brom, Hull, Everton, Watford, Aston Villa and Norwich man was only 60.

Shakespeare had revealed that he was undergoing treatment for cancer back in October 2023.

His family have announced his passing this week, shocking the English footballing world.

The statement added that Shakespeare “passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family.”

It continued: “While the family are immensely proud of his footballing achievements as both a player and a coach, to us, his family, he will always primarily be a loving and loved husband, father, son, brother and uncle.

“The loss is devastating to us all and we would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly difficult time as we try to come to terms with, and mourn, the loss of a very special person.

“The family would like to thank and acknowledge the many prayers and good wishes sent during the past few difficult months, many of which we were unable to respond to but all meant a lot to Craig and the family.”

  • Iheanacho snubs Leicester’s £65k weekly pay may opt for Aston’s offer

Iheanacho snubs Leicester’s £65k weekly pay may opt for Aston’s offer

Super Eagles and Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, has rejected a new deal from the club amidst interest from Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

The 27-year-old striker has been subjected to just ten league starts in the EFL Championships this season, with Enzo Maresca preferring Zambian Patson Daka to lead the line for the Foxes.

Iheanacho, alongside Wilfred Ndidi, are at the tail end of their Leicester City career as their contract runs out in June 2024.

While the defensive midfielder has set sights on a move to a Premier League top-six side, Iheanacho isn’t keen on extending his stay at the King Power Stadium.

According to Football Insider, the highest-scoring African in the history of the FA Cup was offered an improved deal with a weekly wage of £65,000, but the Nigerian striker rejected the offer.

‘‘He (Iheanacho) has been offered a new deal but not prepared to sign. But we will wait till the end of the season and see’’, the report stated.

Several reasons might have sparked Iheanacho’s reaction, with the absence of playing time at the forefront.

According to Football Fancast, Aston Villa are interested in bringing the 2021 FA Cup winner to Villa Park as a backup for Ollie Watkins.

The Villains have enjoyed a great season under Unai Emery and have their eyes locked on a place in the UEFA Champions League next season. Should Iheanacho join Villa, he would have the luxury of playing alongside skilled players like Douglas Luiz, Leon Bailey, Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby.

Aston Villa view Iheanacho as an experienced Premier League forward, representing a summer bargain that could make all the difference next season at Villa Park.

In 10 starts for Leicester, Iheanacho found the back of the net five times and created one goal, averaging a goal involvement every two games.

Leicester City defender Jonny Evans is receiving an MBE.

The defender has made over 100 appearances for Northern Ireland.

The 35-year-old said: “When I got the letter through the door and it had the Royal seal on the back, I was a bit shocked, but it was also amazing.

“It made me feel very proud, especially when I saw that it was in recognition of my contribution to association football in Northern Ireland.

“It brought it home that playing more than 100 times for my country, and playing for so long for Northern Ireland, has been so good.

“I represented everyone in the country and had many good times along the way.”

7 players leaving Leicester City after relegation [See list]

Seven players will leave Leicester City when their contracts expire in June, officials from the club who were relegated from the English Premier League (EPL) have said.

Youri Tielemans, Caglar Soyuncu, Daniel Amartey, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand, Ayoze Perez, and Tete will leave the club.

“The Football Club extends its thanks to all seven players for their contributions during their time with Leicester City and wishes them every success in the next stages of their respective careers,” Leicester City said in a statement.

More players are likely to follow, with the situation of Super Eagles’ Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi sure to attract Nigerian interest.

Dean Smith’s side failed to stay in the English top-flight this season and were relegated after finishing 18th.

The club added that they are still in talks with team captain Jonny Evans to extend his contract.

  • Leicester, Leeds relegated from Premier League

Leicester, Leeds relegated from Premier League

Leicester City’s nine-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they were relegated in agonising fashion despite beating West Ham on the final day of the season.

The Foxes’ fate was out of their hands heading into the last round of fixtures, and Everton’s 1-0 victory over Bournemouth meant the 2015-16 winners slipped into the Championship by two points.

While Toffees fans were in ecstasy at Goodison Park, Leicester supporters at the King Power were left to rue a miserable campaign in which they won only nine league matches.

Leeds United has also been relegated from the Premier League as they lost their final game of the season to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Whites’ fans turned on both their team and the club’s owners as the West Yorkshire side’s three-year top-flight stay came to a meek and pitiful end at Elland Road.
