EPL: Leicester come from behind to beat Burnley

Leicester got the win they craved over Burnley to mark the anniversary of former owner’s Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha’s death on an emotional day at the King Power Stadium.

Burnley thought they had equalised through Chris Wood eight minutes from time but his effort was controversially ruled out by the video assistant referee, which ruled the striker had accidentally tripped Jonny Evans before the ball entered the net.

It meant Leicester were able to celebrate victory after goals from Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans had overturned Wood’s 26th-minute header.

It was a fitting result on a day when Leicester honoured Vichai, who was killed on 27 October last year when his helicopter crashed shortly after take-off close to a car park by the stadium.

Earlier, thousands of fans took part in a ‘Walk for Vichai’ and the stadium itself turned white as they wore scarves bearing the logo ‘Making the Impossible Possible’ which were given to them after entering the stadium.

Vichai’s son ‘Top’, who is now responsible for running the club, was dignified throughout the game, shaking hands with numerous well-wishers before kick-off. He did allow himself to punch the air when Tielemans’ 74th-minute shot powered into the roof of the net.

As the players left the field, Top put his hands together in prayer and pointed to the sky.

  • Ndidi receives yellow card in City defeat as Iwobi fires blank in Everton loss

It was double migraine for Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as he bagged a yellow card in Leicester City 2-1 defeat by Liverpool on Saturday.

Ndidi who as usual was in action for 90 minutes was handed the yellow card in the 30th minute of the match by referee, Chris Kavanagh.

Ndidi was however not the only fox that saw the other side of the referee as teammates Jony Evans and Çağlar Söyüncü were also carded.

Liverpool forward and Senegal international Sadio Mane shot Liverpool into the lead in the 40th minute and also set up the added time penalty that was converted by James Milner.

Leicester City’s consolation goal was scored in the 80th minute by James Maddison.

The pain of losing was not an exclusive for Ndidi on Saturday as compatriot and Everton forward Alex Iwobi equally suffered a lone goal defeat by homers Burnley.

Iwobi like Ndidi was also in action for full 90 minute with Everton maintaining lion share of possession which unfortunately could not translate into goals at the Turf Moor.

Seventy two minute goal scored by Jeff Hendrick was all Burnley needed to seal victory and put smile on the faces of home fans and record only their second victory in six matches the first one being a 2-0 victory at home over visiting Norwich City last month, while Everton were recording their fourth defeat in six matches.

EPL: Vardy hits brace as Leicester thrash Newcastle

Leicester City’s impressive start to the season under Brendan Rodgers continued with a thumping win which left woeful Newcastle anchored in the relegation zone.

Ricardo Pereira’s outstanding low finish set Leicester on their way before Newcastle were reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time after Isaac Hayden’s terrible challenge on Dennis Praet.

Leicester made the extra man advantage count with three goals in 10 second-half minutes.

Jamie Vardy beat Martin Dubravka at his near post to double the lead and, after Paul Dummett had deflected Praet’s cross into his own net to make it 3-0, headed the fourth.

On a miserable day for Newcastle, Wilfred Ndidi added a late fifth goal with a shot on the turn.

Leicester move back up to third in the table, where they started the weekend, after a fourth win in five league and cup games.

Rodgers’ side are two points off second placed Manchester City and seven behind leaders Liverpool, who they visit next Saturday.

EPL: Leicester City come from behind to beat Spurs

James Maddison’s first league goal of the season helped Leicester come from behind to beat Tottenham in an absorbing encounter at the King Power Stadium.

Maddison drilled a superb low effort into the far corner from distance to lift Brendan Rodgers’ side back into the top four at the visitors’ expense.

Ricardo Pereira had put the Foxes back on level terms, moments after Spurs had been denied a second goal when Serge Aurier’s low drive was disallowed for a marginal offside call against Son Heung-min.

Harry Kane’s fourth league goal of the season had given Spurs the lead in the first half, the England striker slotting Son’s clever flick beyond Kasper Schmeichel despite being knocked off balance by Foxes defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Leicester thought they had opened the scoring themselves when Wilfred Ndidi scored on the rebound after Paulo Gazzaniga spilled Youri Tielemans’ effort, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.

  • Transfer: Leicester seal £40m Tielemans deal

Leicester City have confirmed the signing of midfielder Youri Tielemans from Monaco for a club-record £40m on a four-year deal.
Tielemans spent the second half of last season on loan at the King Power Stadium, making 13 appearances, scoring three goals and adding four assists.

  • Transfer: Leicester City sign Newcastle striker for £30

Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez has signed for Leicester City for £30m on a four-year deal.

Perez, 25, leaves St James’ Park after five years. The Spaniard was the club’s top scorer in 2018-19 with 12 goals.
He is Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers’ second signing of the summer, following the arrival of defender James Justin from Luton Town.
Perez, who was bought from Tenerife for £1.5m in June 2014, scored 48 times in 195 appearances for Newcastle.
The Magpies are currently without a manager following the departure of Rafael Benitez at the end of June for Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.

  • Liverpool held by Leicester to give Man City lifeline

Liverpool held by Leicester to give Man City lifeline

Liverpool missed the chance to move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as Leicester held them to a 1-1 draw on a nervy night at Anfield.

Sadio Mane got Liverpool off to the perfect start with the opener inside three minutes, but Leicester hit back in first-half stoppage-time through Harry Maguire.

That goal changed the complexion of the game at an expectant Anfield, and anxiety set in as Leicester became the first club outside the top six to take points off the leaders this season.

Leicester stay 12th as a result while the draw extends Liverpool’s lead at the top five points, but it could have been much more for Jurgen Klopp’s title chasers.

  • Wolves defeat Leicester in seven-goal thriller

Wolves defeat Leicester in seven-goal thriller

Diogo Jota completed a hat-trick in injury time to snatch a thrilling victory for Wolves, who punished a dire Leicester defensive display to increase the pressure on Foxes boss Claude Puel.

A dramatic climax at Molineux produced scenes of stark contrast – with Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo being sent to the stands for racing to celebrate the winner with his players, as Puel put his hands over his face to show the strain of defeat.

Leicester attempted to play offside in the final added minute and Jota was left unmarked to turn in a Raul Jimenez cross, moving his side to eighth in the Premier League table, a place above their opponents.

The Portuguese forward had opened the scoring by prodding home at the back post, with Ryan Bennett heading a second to prompt chants of “sacked in the morning” being aimed at Puel.

Clearly angry in the opening 45 minutes, the Leicester boss saw his side hit back within six minutes of the restart – first through Demarai Gray’s solo run and finish, and then a Conor Coady own goal.

But after digging themselves out of trouble, Leicester’s defence was again undone by a Ruben Neves long ball for Jota to power in his second, only for Wes Morgan to head a late equaliser which appeared to have earned them a point that had seemed so unlikely for much of the game.

Wolves, who beat Leicester 4-3 the last time this fixture was played in the top flight at Molineux in 2003, had other ideas and, in a chaotic finish, Jota won it with Leicester again a mess at the back.

  • EPL: Vardy strike gives Leicester win at Everton

EPL: Vardy strike gives Leicester win at Everton

Jamie Vardy’s 58th minute strike gave Leicester City a 1-0 win at Everton on Tuesday and condemned the Merseysiders to their fourth defeat in five English Premier League games.

Leicester boss Claude Puel made four changes from the team which lost to Cardiff City on Saturday, including leaving midfielder James Maddison on the bench.

Also, Marco Silva recalled Brazilian Richarlison to his starting line-up.

After a poor first half, the decisive goal came when Everton defender Michael Keane mis-controlled the ball to Ricardo Pereira, who sent Vardy through.

The striker made no mistake with a low drive past Jordan Pickford, before celebrating with a cartwheel in front of the travelling Foxes’ fans.

Gylfi Sigurdsson blasted over from a promising position for Everton, but Leicester should have doubled their lead when Harry Maguire somehow missed the target from point-blank range.

Everton, with just one win from their last eight games, have now failed to win in their last four home matches.

The win moves Leicester up into seventh place, on 31 points, four behind Manchester United.

Everton manager Silva was frank in his assessment of his team’s performance.

“A disappointing result, poor performance to be honest. In this moment we have to be honest and look clear at the game.

“Poor performance since the first minute. We knew what they came here to do, playing a 4-5-1 and waiting for our mistake,” said the Portuguese who accepted his players looked nervous.

“When you play so anxious you make easy mistakes like the one we conceded. There is no reason they are under the normal pressure we’ll find the reason for that,” Silva added.

Puel was delighted with the way his team carried out his gameplan.

“The organisation of the team was perfect and I am happy for the players because we lost our last game at home to Cardiff and it was not a fair result,” the Frenchman said.

“We said after that game we wanted to take three points away. It was a difficult challenge of course, but the team showed character.

“We know all the players are tired like us, but the most important thing was to show our strength in this moment. We needed to have a different adaptation for this game.

“In this situation it is not just the quality, but the physical makes a difference. We needed to find the right situation to move.”
