Chelsea, Leicester charged for touchline clash

The Football Association is charging Chelsea and Leicester City following a clash between players and coaches from both teams on Tuesday night.

The two teams played a tense Premier League game at Stamford Bridge, which Chelsea won 2-1 to move into third place in the league.

They also met in the FA Cup final last weekend, which Leicester won 1-0.

Following that game, Leicester defender Daniel Amartey was seen throwing away a pennant Chelsea presented to the Foxes.

Chelsea players were unhappy with Amartey and Leicester in general, and tensions boiled over in the league clash on Tuesday.

An FA statement read: “Chelsea FC and Leicester City FC have both been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 following their Premier League fixture on Tuesday 18 May 2021.

“It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or club officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour during the 93rd minute.

“Chelsea FC and Leicester City FC both have until Tuesday 25 May 2021 to provide their respective responses.”

EPL: Chelsea defeat painful – Iheanacho

Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho admits there was a heavy disappointment after defeat to Chelsea.

Iheanacho struck for the Foxes in the 2-1 defeat.

He lamented afterwards, “It’s so painful. We needed to win this match. The first half was not so good, but in the second half we were much better. It was just hard for us to come back.

    “We gave everything tonight.

“It was hard for us and now we have to win the last match and try to secure a place in the Champions League.”

BREAKING: Chelsea fall to Leicester City in FA Cup final

Leicester City lifted the FA Cup for the first time as Youri Tielemans’ stunning long-range goal earned the Foxes victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

Tielemans collected a loose ball 30 yards out before rifling an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Chelsea thought they had equalised late on but VAR ruled out Wes Morgan’s own goal due to offside in the build-up.

The Foxes held firm in stoppage time to earn Brendan Rodgers his first major trophy in English football.

Leicester’s victory over Man Utd huge step – Rodgers

Leicester City coach Brendan Rodgers says his side took a ‘big step’ by beating Manchester United on Tuesday.

The Foxes claimed a 2-1 at Old Trafford, pushing them eight points clear of fifth-placed West Ham, although David Moyes’ team have a game in hand.

“It’s an extremely important win for us,” said Rodgers in his post-match press conference. “It’s huge. We’re at 66 points now, which is what two of the sides that finished in there last season got.

“It’s a big step but there are still two games to go and the teams are still chasing us, so we still have work to do.”

  • EPL: Newcastle stun Leicester in six-goal thriller

Newcastle moved to within one point of Premier League safety with an impressive 4-2 win over Champions League-chasing Leicester City.

Joe Willock put the visitors ahead with a cool finish after pouncing on an error from Foxes defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Paul Dummett doubled the Magpies’ lead, rising above Wesley Fofana to head past Kasper Schmeichel from Matt Ritchie’s corner, before Callum Wilson’s second-half double wrapped up the three points.

From 4-0 down, the hosts grabbed two goals inside the last 10 minutes through Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho to give the Magpies a late scare.

The result moves Steve Bruce’s side up to 13th, 12 points ahead of 18th-placed Fulham who have four games left.

Leicester, in third, remain five points ahead of fifth-placed West Ham but have now played a game more.

“I have said quietly for weeks that we’d be OK when we got our big players back. My staff have worked tirelessly to make sure we got to this position,” Bruce said.

“We have turned it around at the right time. Normally [39 points] is enough. We are in the dizzying heights of 13th. We haven’t done it yet but we have made big strides in the last few weeks.”

EPL: Leicester held by 10-man Southampton

Southampton held Leicester to a draw despite playing more than 80 minutes with 10 men to frustrate the Foxes in their push to clinch a top-four finish.

Jannick Vestergaard was controversially sent off after just 10 minutes when his tackle on Jamie Vardy was deemed to have denied the Leicester striker a goal-scoring opportunity.

Vestergaard, on the edge of his box and the last defender, got the ball with a lunging tackle but referee Robert Jones deemed his follow-through on to Vardy’s ankle had prevented the striker running in on goal.

That decision set the game’s pattern, Leicester probing while Southampton defended deep, but it was the Saints who took the lead in the 61st minute.

James Ward-Prowse scored from the penalty spot after Kelechi Iheanacho had blocked Stuart Armstrong’s effort with his arm raised up by his head.

Jonny Evans headed in Iheanacho’s cross eight minutes later for the equaliser but under near-constant pressure Southampton’s defence held firm.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy brilliantly denied Vardy with his right boot from close range in the final 10 minutes.

The point takes Leicester eight points clear of fifth-placed West Ham having played a game more but they have a difficult end of the season to come.

Southampton edge 10 points clear of the relegation zone as they close in on guaranteeing their safety.

EPL: Iheanacho sets new personal scoring record

Kelechi Iheanacho has set a new personal scoring record in the Premier League with his ninth goal of the season in Leicester City’s 3-0 thrashing of West Bromwich Albion.

The Nigeria international has surpassed his previous record of eight goals in a league season which was achieved after 26 matches in the 2015-16 campaign at Manchester City.

After grabbing the match-winning effort that sent Leicester City into the FA Cup final on Sunday, the 24-year-old continued his goalscoring form as the Foxes bounced back to winning ways in the English top-flight on Thursday night.

FA Cup: Iheanacho shoots Leicester City into first final in 52 years

The phenomenal run of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho for Leicester City continued Sunday night at the Wembley stadium as the 24-year old scored the only goal in the semi-final clash against Southampton.

Iheanacho, who has already eclipsed the 12-goal FA Cup record previously held by Didier Drogba, increased his own tally to 15 when he converted the chance created for him by his strike partner Jamie Vardy in Sunday’s tie.

Having watched Chelsea edge City 1-0 on Saturday, many had tipped Leicester City as the favourites for a final ticket ahead of the Saints and they did not disappoint even though some may have expected a higher margin of victory.

After a rather uneventful start to the game, the Foxes almost shot in front in the 27th minute after a neat play between Vardy and Iheanacho but the latter was let down by his final touch.

There were a few chances afterward but no goals to separate both sides going into the halftime break.

However, ten minutes into the second half, the breakthrough finally came for the Foxes and Iheanacho was at the end of it.

Vardy galloped down the left and pulled back for Iheanacho, who saw his first-time effort blocked but the ball bounced back to him and he steered home at the second time of asking.

That goal was Iheancho’s 15th of the season in a phenomenal campaign; making him the first Nigerian player to score 15 goals in a season in all competitions for a Premier League club since Odion Ighalo scored 17 in the 2015/16 football season for Watford.

Leicester boss eager to see Iheanacho sign new deal

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers is eager to see Kelechi Iheanacho sign a new deal.

The 24-year-old has been in superb form of late, named Premier League player of the month for March having scored nine goals in as many games for the Foxes since his strike at Fulham in early February.

But with his current deal up at the end of next season, Rodgers wants to agree new terms with the Nigeria international soon.

“He’s definitely someone you want to have,” Rodgers said. “You see the development and the improvement, and that’s what you aim to have – a squad that is developing and can contribute for you.

“I’m pretty sure there’ll be something organised between him and his representatives.”

Though it took Iheanacho time to find his feet alongside Jamie Vardy at Leicester, the partnership has blossomed this season.

“I think you see a young player playing at the top of his game,” Rodgers said. “When he was at Manchester City he was a young developing player who hadn’t played much.

“He came here for a big fee and then of course coming into a team with one of the league’s best strikers has needed some adapting from him. I can only speak for the two years I’ve been here but his work, his ambition to become a better player was always there.

“He’s a wonderful character within the squad, constantly smiling, and whatever role he’s been asked to play he’s played it very well.

“The combination between him and Jamie is very good and at 24 there’s a lot of improvement in him.”

Leicester to send Cengiz Under back to Serie A club

Leicester City are set to pass on signing permanently Cengiz Under.

The Turkey winger has been on-loan at Leicester this season from AS Roma, though has struggled to find a place in manager Brendan Rodgers’ plans.

Sporx says Leicester are now planning to send Under back to his parent club.

The Foxes paid €3m for Under’s loan, with the outright option valued at €25m.

Keeping tabs on Under’s situation are Fenerbahce, which are keen to bring him back to Turkey this summer.
