EPL: Why Leicester beat Chelsea – Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City boss, Brendan Rodgers has said that his team defeated Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League on Tuesday night because his players started the game really well and were very good defensively.

Rodgers also played down his Leicester’s title chances despite the Foxes going top of the Premier League table with 38 points from 19 matches after beating Chelsea at the King Power Stadium.

Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison scored both goals for Leicester against Frank Lampard’s side.

“I don’t really think about it,” Rodgers told a post-match press conference when asked if his side are title contenders.

He added, “It’s something that gets floated about.

Chelsea players know we’re better than this – Mount

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount says there’s no complaints about their 2-0 defeat to Leicester City last night.

Mount concedes the Foxes were the superior team.

“We were beaten by the better side,” he acknowledged to chelseafc.com.

“We know they are a very good team and coming into the game we knew how tough it would be. They set up very well and sometimes you have to put your hands up and say they were better on the night.

“They took their chances. Two goals before half-time affected us and makes it difficult when you’re coming out in the second half. When you’re clinical in front of goal you are going to win games. We had a couple but we didn’t score.

“We are disappointed we didn’t win the game. We know we are better than that. We have to have a look at ourselves, look at how we played, see where we can improve and come back stronger next game.”

[Watch] Ndidi ends Premier League goal drought

Wilfred Ndidi ended his Premier League goal drought as Leicester City defeated Chelsea 2-0 on Tuesday evening.

The Foxes went into the clash hoping to extend their winning streak to three consecutive English elite division games following their 2-0 triumph over Southampton last time out.

Six minutes into the game, James Maddison worked a short corner-kick from the right to Marc Albrighton, who then cut back to Harvey Barnes on the edge of the box. The attacker sliced his shot backwards, and the Super Eagle picked up the loose ball before lashing it from range into the bottom left corner of Edouard Mendy’s post.

With that strike, the former Genk star scored for the first time in 37 English elite division games. The last time he found the net was on September 29, 2019, when Leicester City romped to a 5-0 win over Newcastle United.

Also, the 24-year-old has now scored more Premier League goals against the Stamford Bridge lords that any team.

In addition, three of his seven goals in the tournament have came from outside the goal area.

Leicester go second in EPL after beating Southampton

Leicester City beat Southampton 2-0 on Saturday to go second in the ongoing 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL).

James Maddison and Harvey Barnes scored the goals to lift Leicester City to within one point of Manchester United, who play at third-placed Liverpool on Sunday.

Brighton and West Brom both picked up vital wins in their fight for survival Saturday while Chelsea and West Ham moved up the table with wins in the day’s other matches.

Maddison fired Leicester City ahead eight minutes before half-time and Barnes added a second deep into time added on to put Brendan Rodgers’ side above champions Liverpool.

Liverpool can regain the top spot, though, if they beat leaders Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

Fulham’s hopes of getting anything from their west London derby at home to Chelsea ended when Antonee Robinson was sent off for a nasty challenge on Cesar Azpilicueta.

Mount scored the only goal 12 minutes from the end to secure Chelsea a 1-0 win, lifting them to seventh, but only seven points behind the leaders.

EPL: Leicester beat Tottenham to move second

Leicester City climbed to second in the Premier League as they overcame top-four rivals Tottenham to move four points behind leaders Liverpool.

In a hard-fought battle between the sides starting the day third and fourth in the table – Spurs one point above the visitors – it was the latter who established themselves as champions Liverpool’s closest challengers courtesy of Jamie Vardy’s penalty and a Toby Alderweireld own goal.

Vardy confidently dispatched his spot-kick in the fourth minute of first-half injury time, after referee Craig Pawson was advised to review Serge Aurier’s needless shove on Wesley Fofana via the pitchside monitor.

A VAR review for offside disallowed James Maddison’s well-taken finish three minutes after the restart, but Vardy’s header from Marc Albrighton’s excellent cross deflected in off Alderweireld to double Leicester’s advantage after 59 minutes.

Vardy’s opener arrived at the end of a closely contested opening 45 minutes, during which Spurs captain Harry Kane’s saved free-kick in the 34th minute and Foxes midfielder Maddison’s deflected shot from distance were the only other attempts on target.

Son Heung-min was denied at close range by Kasper Schmeichel as Jose Mourinho’s disappointing hosts were left frustrated in search of a response, while Leicester went close to a late third through Youri Tielemans.

Beaten 2-1 by Liverpool in their top-of-the-table meeting on Wednesday, former pacesetters Tottenham find themselves six points adrift of the lead.

Europa: Iheanacho shines as Leicester thrash Braga

Kelechi Iheanacho scored twice as Leicester City secured a comfortable 4-0 win over Braga on Thursday.

The Nigerian scored on either side of half-time and almost completed his hat-trick, only to be denied by Braga goalkeeper Matheus.

Iheanacho then turned provider when his square pass found Dennis Praet to score from close range.

James Maddison, who set up Iheanacho’s first goal, made it four for the hosts with a brilliant solo goal.

The Foxes have an 100% record after three matches and sit top of Group D.

Brendan Rodgers’ side next face Wolves on Sunday ahead of next week’s international break.

Iheanacho challenges Vardy for Leicester goal award

Kelechi Iheanacho’s strike in Leicester City’s 3-0 victory over FC Zorya Luhansk has been shortlisted for the Foxes’ Goal of the Week.

In the Europa League Group G encounter against the Ukrainians in England, the Nigeria international scored his team’s third goal after James Maddison and Harvey Barnes had given Brendan Rodgers’ men a two-goal advantage.

Iheanacho received the ball 20 yards out, shifted it out of his feet before rattling a strike into the bottom corner away from goalkeeper Mykyta Shevchenko.

That strike has been nominated along with Barnes’ effort against Zorya, Jamie Vardy’s late winner at Arsenal in the Premier League and Hamza Choudhury’s first-half effort at AEK Athens.

  • Vardy header gives Leicester first win at Arsenal in 47 years

Vardy header gives Leicester first win at Arsenal in 47 years

Leicester City won at Arsenal for the first time in 47 years on Sunday.

Substitute Jamie Vardy’s late close range header was enough to secure victory for them in the English Premier League (EPL) at The Emirates in London.

The win lifted Brendan Rogers’ side to fourth on 12 points, while the Gunners stay in 10th place on nine after six games.

Arsenal were left ruing their failure to score in the first half hour when they pushed forward time and again.

They racked up 10 shots and six corner-kicks to Leicester City’s one and zero respectively.

The hosts had the ball in the net from a corner-kick in the fourth minute.

But replays showed at least three players offside as Alexandre Lacazette flicked it past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The hosts then almost scored when Kieran Tierney whipped in a cross which team captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang headed over.

They went even closer to opening the scoring a few minutes later when Alexandre Lacazette, standing in front of goal, somehow nodded another cross from Tierney wide of the far post.

Vardy, who came on with half an hour to play having missed Leicester City’s previous two games with a calf injury, broke the deadlock in the 80th minute.

He headed home Cengiz Under’s cross.

“We weathered a bit of a storm but then started getting into it and we’ve come away with a win. It’s big for us but it’s just the next game where we want to keep improving,” said Vardy.

The win gets Leicester City’s season back on track following league defeats by Aston Villa and West Ham United.

“We’ve had a couple of bad results and we wanted to put that right in the league. Luckily, I’ve come on and made an impact,” Vardy said.

“It gives us a little boost. The last two games in the league have not been good enough, but to come here and put in a performance like we have is great for the team.”

Vardy’s 11th Premier League goal against the Gunners —— more than any other player apart from Wayne Rooney —— gave his side their first win at Arsenal since September 1973.

  • West Ham beat Leicester City 3-0

West Ham beat Leicester City 3-0

Leicester City recorded their first loss of the season on Sunday after slumping to a 3-0 defeat against West Ham.

West Ham who were well-organised and thoroughly deserved their victory, secured their win through goals from Antonio, Fornals and Bowen.

Leicester had plenty of possession but failed to get a single shot on target.

The win was West Ham’s second in a row, without conceding a goal as they now sit seventh in the Premier League table.

Leicester remain second on the league depending on the outcome of Liverpool match against Aston Villa later today.

Both Leicester and West Ham now head for the international break.

While Leicester have been brought back to earth after their strong start, West Ham can dream of a season that won’t end with them fighting relegation once again.

We’ll just have to wait and see.
