Lagos Govt seals popular Lekki nightclub

A joint enforcement team from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps  and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency  (LASEPA) on Monday sealed Light House Club located on Admiralty Way,  Lekki, over environmental pollution.

This is contained in a tweet by the Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab (@tokunbo_wahab).

Wahab said that the establishment was sealed for violating Lagos State noise pollution regulations, following multiple warnings that were disregarded by the management.

He said that the closure would remain in effect until the club management demonstrates full compliance with environmental standards.

“This includes implementing proper soundproofing measures, and LASEPA confirming their adherence to approved noise levels.

“We want to make it clear to all entertainment venues across Lagos that our environmental laws are not optional.

“The rights of residents to peaceful enjoyment of their neighbourhood  takes precedence over any business interest,” Wahab said.

  • Lagos govt to demolish buildings in Lekki

Lagos govt to demolish buildings in Lekki

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has said it will demolish some buildings around the Lekki area of the state over encroachment on the Right of Way (ROA).

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said this while speaking with journalists after an inspection tour on some projects around the Lekki environs on Thursday in Lagos.

Wahab also appealed to residents to always be patient during flash flooding during the rains. The commissioner visited the Oral Estate and Purple Mall, among others, all in the Lekki axis.

“We were at Oral estate some few weeks ago, and then we asked those families to take time so we can review.

“So, we came back after the review and then to see what we have to do to remove those contraventions and have a win-win with the citizens staying there.

“We have to remove some contraventions on the ROA of the Ikota River because the river is the only channel that supports the Atlantic.

“God forbid, if anything happens on the other Lagos Atlantic, the only way you can save the whole Island, including this place, is through the Ikota River,” he said.

Wahab, who said the ROA had been badly encroached upon by a lot of developments, added that they had to re-establish the ROA of the river.

“Their system 156, 157, 44 and 44A, even 46, they all discharged to the Ikota River. So now they have narrowed it down at those points, and you all saw it yourself. They were building on the bank of the Ikota River.

“So, we have to just re-establish the ROA for the Ikota River, and then they have to also install the sheet piles. The sheet piles is to ensure that they won’t go beyond it in future,” he said.

Sheet piles are long, thin, interlocking structural sections driven into the ground to create a continuous wall for retaining soil or water.

They are used in both temporary and permanent structures for various applications, including retaining walls, cofferdams, and waterfront structures.

He added that the sheet piles were a way of pushing them back, sanctioning them, removing what they need to remove, and then mitigating the impact on the ROA of the Ikota River.

“They have to install the sheet piles at their own cost. By Monday, we want to see their commitment to install the sheet piles, which should not take them more than seven days.

“Once those commitments are not there, we do what we have to do, but we have to remove it. It is obvious to even them,” he said.

On the number of houses that would be removed,  the commissioner said the figure would be determined in the coming week.

“We will know by next week, but houses have to be removed on the ROA of the Ikota River,” he said.

On flash floods in some parts of the state, the commissioner appealed to residents to be patient when they experience these floods.

“When it rains heavily, I tell people every time there’s a lock-up, lock-up is basically telling you that storm water or rain water can’t discharge to the natural outlet, which is the lagoon or the Atlantic.

“So, when you have that for a few hours, the water level is high, there will be flash flooding. The next morning, if you go to those areas, you won’t see the water anymore.

“It must have receded, and that’s what happened. So, it’s about nature and science,” Wahab said.

He appealed to residents to be patient, saying that the floods would disappear after one or two hours.

“The appeal is let us be patient. If you have no emergency, you can still stay where you are. After one or two hours, the water body will leave the road or the space for you,” he said.

  • How Lekki Bishop allegedly raped 25-year woman while speaking in tongue

How Lekki Bishop allegedly raped 25-year woman while speaking in tongue

A 25-year woman (name withheld) on Wednesday told an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court  how a bishop, Oluwafeyiropo Daniels, allegedly raped her while praying.

The alleged rape occurred at the cleric’s  residence at Lekki, Lagos State.

The bishop is standing trial on an amended three-count charge bordering on rape and sexual assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The alleged victim/survivor testified at the resumed trial of the defendant.

The witness,  who was  a  member of a church founded by the defendant,  was led in  evidence by  state lead counsel, Mr Babajide Boye.

According to the alleged survivor, she was in her sister’s shop in Osogbo on Jan. 2, 2019, when her cousin was listening to the bishop’s sermon on phone.

“I told my cousin the sermon was nice and he told me the name of the church which I searched  for and followed its  page on Facebook.

“After that, I was able to chat with Feyi on Facebook  and he added me to a WhatsApp group called  Spiritual Sonship Group,” she testified.

The alleged victim told the court that she met the defendant for the first time at a camp in 2019 when the church  had a three-day retreat.

“He later had a programme at OAU which I attended and met  Brother Isaac, one of his spiritual sons, and we exchanged numbers.

“From the sonship group, I took an assistant pastor / first prosecution witness (PW1) (name withheld) to be my prayer partner because, irrespective of our gender, we call ourselves sons.

“On the WhatsApp group, Feyi dropped a message that all sons should pick  a convenient  time to fast for 70 days, pray for two hours and break at 6.00 p.m. daily and  come  to Lagos for laying of hands after the fasting,” she testified.

The witness told the court that  the defendant told her personally to come to Lagos for  laying of hands after the fasting.

“On Sept. 8 2019, I told her (PW1) that I was going to Lagos for the laying of hands but the programme started late and there was no where to sleep because I had no one I could stay with in Lagos.

“PW1 told me  to call and tell Feyi that I had no one to stay with for the night, and I did.

“He said there was no problem, and this made me to follow him to his house with some other members, including Bro Israel and his wife, but they later left the house that same day,” she said.

The witness said that a lady identified simply as Rachael took her to a room where she slept.

“The following morning, Feyi came out of his room and laid his hands on my head and started praying for me  at the dining section, after I  greeted him.

“I went inside the room to start preparing to go to Osogbo, and he told me there was food in the kitchen, that I should eat.

“I was eating at the dining when he came to meet me again and said, ‘Are you in your period?’

“I said, ‘No”, and he went back to his room. I did not see Rachael in the morning though we slept  in the same room,” she said.

The alleged survivor further told the court that the defendant came to her again and told her that he had an instruction for her but would want  her to hear it herself.

She said: ” There are two portraits of one Prophet Babajide David Olulana on Feyi’s living room whom he told me was his spiritual father.

“Feyi told me to carry one of the portraits and stare at it so that I can hear the instruction myself, which I did.

“After a while, he came out of his room and asked if I heard anything. I told him,” No”.  He then said that the portrait was talking to me but I could not receive it. He said his spiritual  father would use another means to speak to me.

“I then got a text message on my phone with the sender showing Babajide. I could not call the number but the message read, ‘Whatever your father asks you to do, do it for your own good’.”

According to the witness,  the defendant later came out and asked if she had received any sign.

“I told him I got a message. He said I should delete the message. Feyi told me that when I was born, my aunt did something to me which prevented my progress in life.

“He said the instruction he received was for him to help me so that I could be free from my aunt. I asked what the instructions was, and he said the instruction was for him to have sex with me. I was confused at this point. His eyes had already changed and he told me to go to his room.”

She told the court that when she got there, the two portraits of Prophet Babajide were on the bed.

“He (defendant) was playing a Christian song with the title, ‘Let Praises Rise’  on his phone. He pushed me on the bed, I tried to move away but he pulled me back as I was already naked.

“While Feyi was speaking in tongue, he was having sex with me,” she testified.

The witness further told the court that the defendant told her she would die if she would tell anyone about the alleged rape.

She said that the defendant raped her on other occasions and she  got pregnant for him but lost it to an accident on Ilorin-Ibadan  Road.

Justice Ramon Oshodi adjourned the case until May 25 for continuation of trial.

She was led in evidence by Lagos State counsel, Mr Babajide Boye.

She told the court that she was an assistant pastor of 1 Reign Christian Ministry founded by the bishop.

She said that she knew the bishop on  May 28, 2018, when her friend invited her for a church programme at which the bishop ministered, at Akungba, Akoko in Ondo State.

She said that the programme was tagged  “Strictly Supernatural”.

According to her, she subsequently became a member of the church and rose to the position of an assistant pastor.

She said that Pastor Boluwatishe Oladejo took over from Pastor Toyosi Bamise as the Lead Pastor then.

The witness told the court that the bishop, who she regarded as her spiritual father, raped her at his residence on Ikota Villa Estate, Lekki, Lagos State, on June 21, 2020.

The witness said: “I was listening to Pastor Chris’s message when bishop came to the three-seater chair I was sitting on and told me to go naked.

“For the fear of what happened a day before, I went naked,  and bishop locked the door, increased the volume of the television and went naked also.

“He pinned me to the chair and raped me. He was bigger than me.”

The witness said that she appealed to the bishop to leave her but he did not.

“He threatened that I would run mad if I should tell anyone; so, I was in the guest room till the following day.

“On June  22,  I sent a  message to  Pastor Boluwatishe and informed him that I had been raped,” the alleged victim testified.

She also told the court that the bishop did not allow her to go out of the house after the first alleged rape.

“He sent the gateman anytime I needed anything. It was at this time that it was dawn on me that this man is a rapist.

“For my safety, I was acting stupid and acted as if I did not tell anyone.

“I was in the room when he came again and said he wanted to have sex but  I refused.

“He was very angry;  so, I told him  I had tears from the previous sexual violation,” she testified.

The witness said that, on June 23, 2020, the bishop also told her that he wanted to have sex with her.

“He said I should count it as a privilege that he had sex with me because many people would love to have sex with him.

“I told him I had someone I was dating.

“That same morning of June 23, he took off my dress and raped me again in the sitting room.

“He told me I would die if  I should tell anyone. I bled a second time because of the forceful entry,” she said.

She earlier told the court that the bishop called her on phone on June 5, 2020, saying that it was her turn to come with some other pastors to his house at Lekki, Lagos State.

She added that,  on June 19, when she got to the house, the bishop came out from his room and told her that she had a query to answer.

She testified that the bishop told her that she would transcribe his message entitled “Fulfilling My Ministry”.

She said: “The following day, on June 20, only the bishop and I were left in the house after other pastors had left.

“The bishop told me to go on a three-hour prayer work around the estate but I came back 30 minutes before the three hours elapsed,  due to rain.

“He questioned why I returned earlier, and I told him that it was due to rainfall.

“I was seated on a couch that same day listening to Pastor Chris’s message when the bishop walked up to me from the dining section and made comments on the teaching I was listening to.”

She testified that the bishop thereafter told her to pull off her clothes but didn’t rape her.

“He said he wanted to know my loyalty and see If I had finally submitted to him.

“I told him I could do anything for him but sex. He tried kissing me but I stopped him; then, he slapped me.

“He ordered me to wear back my clothes, saying that I disappointed him,” the witness said.

She testified that on June 24, 2020, the bishop told her to clean up the house.

“That was when Sister Faith and Pastor Toyosi came to the house.

“I tried to talk to Pastor Toyosi but bishop did not give me a breathing space until he travelled to Ghana and I went home.”

The alleged survivor also told the court that  the defendant sent N5,000 to her from  Ghana to treat herself because of the tears she had.

“He got back to Nigeria with his two children and wife, and when the wife asked why I could not walk well,  bishop told her I contacted a disease from toilet.

“He came to meet me about 3.30 a.m. in the guest room and brought out a rod for me to swear with, that I would run mad if I should tell anyone that he raped me, which I did out of fear.

“He took me to First City Hospital, Lekki, where Dr Tina Clement, a member of the church attended to me, ran some tests, gave me drugs and sent the results to him.

“When the doctor asked what happened to me, bishop told me to tell her I was raped by my friend, and he was with me throughout the tests,” she said.

A computer printout of chats between her and the defendant was admitted in evidence.

Oluwafeyiropo is also alleged to have had sexual intercourse with one other person and sexually assaulted another, aged 19 years, by forcefully sucking her breasts.

According to Lagos State Government, which is prosecuting the case, the alleged offences contravene Sections 260(2) and 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Justice Ramon Oshodi adjourned the case until May 24 for cross-examination of the witness and continuation of trial.

  • Popular Lagos Bishop sent to prison for allegedly raping 2 church members in Lekki

Popular Lagos Bishop sent to prison for allegedly raping 2 church members in Lekki

An Ikeja Sexual offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday remanded a clergyman, Daniel Oluwafeyiropo for allegedly raping two of his church members (names withheld).

Justice Ramon Oshodi remanded the founder of “I Reign Christian Ministry” in Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

Oshodi admitted the defendant to N20 million bail with two sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties must be owner of a build up property in Lagos State and the property must be enough to cover the bail sum.

“The original document of the landed property must be submitted the chief registrar of Lagos State.

“The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must have three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State,” he said.

The judge also ordered the defendant to deposit his international passport with the chief registrar of the court and ordered acceleration hearing of the case.

Oshodi adjourned the case until May 9 for trial.

Earlier, the defence counsel, Mr Olukunle Oyewole, while moving his bail application dated  April 10, urged the court to grant bail to the defendant on liberal terms.

Oyewole argued that the defendant had been on police administrative bail since May 20, 2022 and had made himself available to the police.

“My lord, the defendant was not informed on the day the matter came up for the first time before this court.

“The defendant is a well known religious leader and he has shown by his action  that he will not jump bail.

“The offence for which he is charged with is a bailable offences and he has credible sureties that can stand for him,” he said.

The state lead prosecution counsel, Mr Babjide Boye, in his counter affidavit dated April 14, urged the court to refuse the bail application of the defendant,  however, left it at the discretion if the court.

Boye, however, argued that the offences was a serious one and the likelihood of conviction  might  put the defendant on flight risk.

“There is also possibility of the defendant interfering with the prosecution witnesses.

“He is a bishop of so many branches and if granted bail,  he may use his position  to influence the prosecution witnesses as he is regarded as a man of authority who has the possibility of committing same crime.

“We urge the court to deny the defendant bail because he has failed to provide  the court  exceptional  circumstances to grant him bail,” the prosecutor submitted.

Oluwafeyiropo, was earlier  arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on rape.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly committed the offences sometime in June 2020 at Ikota Villa Estate, Lekki, Lagos.

According to the prosecution, the alleged offence contravened Sections 260 (2) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

  • NIPCO set to connect Lekki Free Trade Zone with gas pipeline

NIPCO set to connect Lekki Free Trade Zone with gas pipeline

NIPCO Gas Ltd. has signed an agreement with the NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd. (NGML) and Lekki Free Zone Development Company (LFZDC) to build a gas pipeline.

The gas pipeline, which is expected to be completed in the next six months, is planned to supply gas to the Lekki Free Zone and feed a 24 Mega Watts (MW) power plant in the axis.

Speaking at the signing of the MOU in Lagos on Sunday, the Managing Director, NIPCO Gas, Mr Nagendra Verma, said the pact would aid smooth distribution of gas to Lekki area of Lagos State.

“Our intention is to supply gas, which is economical, cheaper and environmentally friendly.

“It will also enhance efficiency of equipment and ultimately boost the economy of this country.

“We are developing gas infrastructure to meet the power requirement of the industries,” said Verma.

According to him, this business engagement will attract more industries to set up their facilities within LFZDC, which will not only support the consortium, but also develop the Free Zone area.

“This is also going to boost the industrialisation and employment opportunities in Lekki area, which in turn will boost the economy of the country.

“We believe that the collaboration between NGML-NIPCO and LFZDC shall attracts industries, as the free zone has many advantages like proximity to the sea-port and export promotion zone advantages.

“It will also improve road connectivity, hence providing better logistics for movement of raw materials or finished products.

“We feel really happy to be associated with this project, and would like to thank NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd. for making NIPCO Gas their preferred partner, and thanks also to LFZDC for partnering with the NGML-NIPCO Consortium,” he said.

The NIPCO boss said Nipco Gas pioneered Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) supply in Nigeria.

He added that NIPCO Gas had natural gas distribution network in Benin City, Edo, and was supplying gas to industries for their power and fuel requirement.

“Presently 7 CNG stations in Edo, 1 CNG station in Delta, 1 CNG station in Ogun and 1 CNG station in Kogi are operational,” he said.

Also, Managing Director, NGML, Mr Justin Ezeala, said the company partnered NIPCO because it was a reliable firm and an industry leader in pipeline laying.

“We appreciate the LFZDC for its confidence in us and we will monitor the process to ensure a fruitful project,” he said.

Meanwhile, Managing Director, LFZDC, Dai Shunfa, said the company had been in need of sufficient gas supply for many years.

“We negotiated the agreement with NIPCO and NGML. It has become reality today.

“I believe this is a win-win situation for the parties. This will be a key facility for us,” said Shunfa.

Shunfa said some equipment had already been procured for the project and would be moved to site immediately after the signing ceremony.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the proposed gas infrastructure development will enhance business development in Ibeju Lekki community and also boost economic growth in Lagos.

  • NCF raises alarm, says Lekki-Epe corridor may be washed away by 2024

NCF raises alarm, says Lekki-Epe corridor may be washed away by 2024

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation warns that the Lekki-Epe corridor, including the Lekki Conservation Center (LCC) and the estates surrounding it may be washed away by 2024 if nothing is done to check the ocean encroachment.

Dr Joseph Onoja, Director-General of NCF, gave the indication at an event to mark the 40thanniversary of the establishment of the foundation and award night held on Saturday in Lagos.

Onoja said that about 128 metre of land have been lost to the ocean between 2018 and 2022.

According to him, the ocean encroachment, if left unchecked, is an existential threat to the collective existence of the Lekki-Epe corridor.

While taking the attendees through his presentation, Onoja said that the foundation had been painstakingly tracking the ocean movement since 2018 using its active drone images and comparing it with google images.

“We started taking active drone images in 2018, especially the Lafiaji axis, “ Onoja said.

He said that an earlier redline (marked position), as at Aug. 25, 2022,  was gradually becoming  part of the ocean.

“We continued to track the movement between 2020 and 2021. By July 2021, our reference house has gotten close to the ocean. By Aug. 25, 2022, the ocean could just be seen beside the house.

“Now from our projection and from what is happening, if everything remains constant, our referenced redline will remain just by the ocean in 2026

“However, things are not equal, we have already been beaten by the beachhead.

“By our projection, if nothing is done, by 2024 the ocean will have reached the lower part of the terrain and the ocean will flow freely and meet us on the Lekki-Epe expressway.

“That is the reality we are facing,” Onoja said.

The Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) is a 78-hectare (190-acre) Natural Resource Conservation in Lekki, Lagos.

The Centre was established in 1990 to serve as biodiversity conservation icon and environment education centre.

Onoja said that the LCC now has more built up houses and estates around it.

“So, the tendency for the ocean to wipe all of these is very high, if nothing is done,” the director-general said.

He appealed to the Lagos state government for assistance to forstall this occurence.

“We are ready to collaborate with the LASG and the Federal Government to see that the reality on ground does not lead to a humanitarian, ecological and national disaster”.

Earlier, the D-G noted that the NCF was established in 1980, while the LCC was established in 1989.

He expressed gratitude to Chevron for its generous support to the LCC.

He said that the LASG donated the Canopy Walk Way to the LCC, the longest in Africa, in 2015,

He said that with the donation of the walk way, the revenue of the center has increased and the that it had also attracted many guests to the reserve.

“So far, we have over 100,000 people visiting the reserve.

“It is a heritage site for the Lagos state government and we are proud of the relationship we have with the state.

“However, since its construction in 2015, we have been the ones taking care of it and its safety standards.

“We appeal to the state government to come to our assistance, especially our fence,” Onoja said.

He noted that when it was best days the foundation’s fence was 2 meters high, adding that later it become 1.8 meters high.

“However, over time our environment has been sand-filled and our fence is now less than a meter.

“We need assistance to reconstruct it,” Onoja said.

Highlight of the event was the cutting of the anniversary cake and giving of awards to deserving individuals in the society.

The awards came in different categories including Special Recognition Award, Award of Dedicated Service, Long Service Award and Posthumous Award.

The Founder of the NCF, Late Chief Lawal Edu, among others, got the foundation’s posthumous award.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku (MFR), a former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth and General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) GCON,  got the special recognition award.

The award night was graced by people from all works of life who are passionate about protecting the earth and environmental sustainability.

  • How we’ll handle proposed Lekki airport – NCAA

How we’ll handle proposed Lekki airport – NCAA

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says it will offer professional guidance on the proposed Lekki airport in Lagos, in line with its regulations and in the interest of safety.

Mr Sam Adurogboye, the General Manager, Public Affairs of NCAA, said this in an interview with NAN in Lagos on Monday.

Recall that the Special Adviser Lagos State Governor on Public Private Partnerships (PPP), Mr Ope George, on Thursday expressed the state readiness to construct a new airport on the Lekki axis.

George revealed that the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government had sought and obtained approval from the Federal Government for the construction of the new airport in Lagos.

He said thst the project, expected to take off in 2023, would be constructed on 3,500 hectares of land.

Reacting to the development, Adurigboye assured that the aviation regulatory body would monitor the project from beginning to the end when the time comes.

“NCAA is not opposed to developmental strides, and the initial approval comes from Federal Ministry of Aviation, while NCAA also gives its approval.

“We will also supervise it from beginning to the end and certify it okay before the usage of the airport” he said.

Adurogboye said building an airport around the axis meant infrastructure development, which was good for the economy, the community and the state where it is situated.

Meanwhile, an aviation expert, retired Group Capt. John Ojikutu, commenting on the state government’s plan, said Lagos deserved a second airport.

He, however, said that the plan had been on for a long time and wondered why it was taking so long to begin it.

Ojikutu, who is the Secretary of Aviation Round Table (ART), said that the state’s plan came to light during the tenure of former Lagos governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola.

The ART is a non-governmental organisation established to advocate air safety and security in all areas of the aviation sector.

Fashola was governor of Lagos State from 2007 to 2015.

Ojikutu said that the project was supposed to be going on side by side with the Lekki Free Trade Zone and deep seaport.

“I welcomed it at the first mention about 10 years ago and I still do today.

“Lagos actually deserves a second airport which originally was planned to be sited at Imagbon near Badagry, where the Air Force now located at Ikeja was to be located.

“The bulk of the passengers destined for Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) live far away in Victoria Island and Lekki.

“I’m sure if statistics of regular passengers at the MMA are to be taken today, the percentage of that come from these areas cannot be less than 50 per cent.
