#ENDSARs: Tinubu opens up, describes Lekki tollgate shootings as a conspiracy [Audio interview]

“It is not possible for me to be part of this carnage. I am an unapologetic protester, I have seen people killed during Abacha era, I condemned it, I have gone to exile, detention and I condemned it, the protest that we already tolerated for 13 Days, How can we suddenly shed innocent blood to end the protest, it is not acceptable, there are other means, if they refuse to leave the spot, you can use, teargas, water, pepper spray, rubber bullet, not live ammunition.”

A former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, has denied any involvement in the Tuesday shooting of #EndSARS protesters by some soldiers in Lagos.

The shooting has attracted global outrage against the Nigerian authorities.

Several allegations have been made against Mr Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, regarding the incident, with some people saying, without proof, that he “ordered” the shooting just to show his loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Some business concerns linked to Mr Tinubu, including The Nation newspaper and a television station, TVC, have been attacked in Lagos by hoodlums whose motives remain unclear.

“I will never be part of any carnage. The use of live ammunition (against the protesters) is condemnable in totality,” Mr Tinubu said in an interview aired on by Channels TV.

He said he did not “order” the shooting of the protesters. “There is a limitation here, I can only control my personal security guards,” he said.

Mr Tinubu was interviewed via telephone by a Channels TV reporter, Olu Philips.

He said he was “extremely shocked” when he heard about the shooting and that he was ready to “complain to the highest level”.

“It is early hours of the morning, there’s no way I can talk to the authorities or wake them up now. I have tried to reach the NSA, I have tried to reach the head of the army.

BEING THE TEXT OF A STATE-WIDE BROADCAST BY MR. BABAJIDE OLUSOLA SANWO-OLU, LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR

    Dear Lagosians,

I address you today with a heavy heart, but not just as your elected Governor. I do so as a father and a brother. I do so as one who is touched by the infirmities and feelings of his people. I do so as a part of the collective humanity that we all share.

Yesterday’s events were no doubt some of the darkest gradients of our history as a State and as a people. As you are perhaps aware, I have been engaging the #EndSARS protesters since Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 October 2020 respectively.

I declared my affinity with their crusade against all forms of police brutalities. I took all of their #5for5 demands to President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu in Abuja. They were all acceded to.

Indeed, I could say we were making progress together though the pace was slow and indeed very slow due to lack of an acceptable leadership amongst the #EndSARS protesters.
However, events took a different turn from Sunday 18, October 2020 as criminal elements took advantage of the firm orders handed down to the officers and men of the Nigerian Police not to resort to shooting as a rule of engagement.

In Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, armed gangs unleashed mayhem on one another. While this was happening, other criminal elements joined in attacking innocent citizens who were returning from church services. There were reported cases of violent robbery of scores of citizens and rape of frightened women scampering for safety.

They are mothers, wives and sisters of our fellow citizens. Other criminal elements in turn began to unleash terror on citizens in different parts of the State like Fagba junction in Ogba and Ebute Metta. In the Ebute Metta incident, 19 officers and men of our Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were severally injured by armed thugs in Adekunle, Ebute Metta. The level of insecurity in different parts of the State became heightened with the multiple attacks on Police Stations.

The lawlessness blossomed into attacking and lynching of Police officers at Herbert Macaulay and Alapere areas of Lagos. Things took a more dangerous turn on Tuesday 20th, 2020 when the Orile and Ilasamaja Police Stations were razed by arsonists.

Chaos took over as Ajeromi Local Government Area offices were completely burnt down and wanton destruction of property followed. In the same Ajeromi, the Local Government Area, Ajegunle in particular, branches of financial institutions were looted and hoodlums attempted to gain access into the Tincan Island Ports.

As these were unfolding, with the help of respected civil society leaders and some concerned parents, we intensified our efforts as a government to persuade the leading lights of the #EndSARS protests to suspend the protests in view of the rising insecurity in the State.

We made the case that their battle has been won. We additionally conceded that they could resume their peaceful protests in Lekki and Alausa once we had succeeded in taming the rising wave of insecurity in the State. To achieve that, we needed a blanket stoppage of all forms of protests so as to make it difficult for violent tendencies to creep into the midst of peaceful protesters.

Our governance of security strategy requires that we do not make a different rule for one group of protesters and another for others. Sadly, we did not succeed in persuading the group of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate to agree to this.

Unfortunately, while many of the protesters in Alausa dispersed peacefully ahead of the start of the curfew, many of our youths at the Lekki Toll Gate insisted on continuing with the protests. Sadly, there was no leadership to appeal to as they had continually maintained that remaining leaderless was a strategy.

For clarity, it is imperative to explain that no sitting governor controls the rules of engagement of the army. I have nevertheless instructed an investigation into the ordered and the adopted rules of engagement employed by the officers and men of the Nigerian Army deployed to the Lekki Toll Gate yesterday.

This is with a view to taking this up with the high command of the Nigerian Army and seek the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief to unravel the sequence of event that happened yesterday.

Fellow Lagosians, while we pray for swift recovery for the injured, we are comforted that no fatalities were recorded as widely circulated on the social media. The leadership of our Ministry of Health led by the Honourable Commissioner, Professor Akin Abayomi worked through the night with different hospitals in Lekki and environ to monitor and provide support for the injured protesters.

It is relevant to let you know that I have also personally visited the 10 patients at the General Hospital, the 11 at Reddington Hospital and the 4 at Vedic Hospital, with mild to moderate injuries as well as the 2 in intensive care. So far, 3 patients have been treated and discharged to reunite with their families.

However, in sensitivity with the mood of the nation at this time, I have directed the following:

    1. The immediate suspension of all State activities for 3-days except those connected with governance of security in the State and the management of the current issue.

    2. The lowering of the flags in all government establishments for 3-days.

    3. The constitution of a 5-man Fact-Finding Committee into the Rules of Engagement ordered and adopted by the Nigerian Army to be headed by a retired military officer not less than the rank of a General. The report will be presented to the President within 2-weeks.

Fellow Lagosians, this may seem like the darkest hour of our history as a people, our sun will rise again. From the present ashes of our mourning today, a bright morning shall emerge from the womb of time and we shall rise again.

From the lowest place where this incident has thrown us, we shall rise with wings like the Phoenix and regenerate ourselves with new strength for a brighter tomorrow.

As we walk this phase of our history, let us remain one resilient people under God, with absolute faith trusting that we shall indeed rise again. Where we are now is fate. I apologise for everything that happened.

    God Bless Lagos State
God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Policemen and soldiers out to enforce a 24 hour curfew at Lekki Toll Gate shot at #EndSARS protesters Tuesday night.

Reports reaching TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) indicates that some persons have been feared killed while several others were injured.

The shooting led to the dispersal of the protesters, who had remained at the Plaza, hours after the curfew went into force.

Video clips from the scene, showed some protesters on the floor, hit by bullets.

Staccato of gunshots can also be heard from a video, as the protesters ran for their lives.

The protesters had defied the curfew imposed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu imposed at about noon today.

Earlier before the shooting spree, some officials came to remove the CCTV cameras at the gate.

The aim is now clear: to avoid any evidence that may be used against the police or army.

Protesters have now added #EndSwat to their demands.

  • Sanwo-Olu vows to demolish houses on Right of Way in Lekki

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said his government will demolish buildings obstructing government’s Right of Way (RoW) at Lekki in Eti-Osa Local Government Area.

Sanwo-Olu said this during a road assessment on Saturday in Lekki, saying that people had built structures without planning approval, thereby obstructing government’s RoW.

Sanwo-Olu said that houses built on the RoW and obstructions on the alignment of the Lekki Regional Road were the major causes of flooding around Lekki axis.

He said that the Lekki regional road was meant to be a relief access road for the Lekki-Epe express road.

”We have gone round and have seen that there are places where the alignments are still kept, and people still kept the planning approval of the state government.

”But a major place of concern is where people have completely bastardised the right of way, where people have built structures around the place, without approval.

”We are going to instruct the Ministry of Physical Planning to come and ask for their planning approvals. The ones that do not have, we will mark all those buildings for demolition.

”We want to also engage them because we will need to ask them what other alternatives they want to give us. What alternatives are they going to provide for government.

”If people that are meant to be civilised will come and develop on government’s right of way for future development of roads, I think it speaks to the soul of everybody,” he said.

The governor said that building on RoW was a high level of irresponsibility by citizens and disregard for the state’s urban planning masterplan.

According to him, government will not condone it or sit back and let people take undue advantage of the state’s planning laws.

”So let us take them to public courts, let us take them to the public domain, people need to see how reckless people can also live and they show that they are building with high walls with high gates.

”This government will not relent, we will do whatever it is for us to do, so that we can preserve the sanctity of the state, of the city and people that are law abiding must have respite,” he said.

This comes after reports on violence against Nigerians living in South Africa went viral.

Earlier on Thursday, the telecommunications company issued a statement condemning xenophobic attacks.

“MTN Nigeria strongly condemns hate, prejudice and xenophobia and reiterate our unequivocal condemnation of all violence,” the statement read.

“We seek to connect people, bring people together and provide a platform for everyone’s voice to be heard. We are against all forms of bigotry and discrimination; they should have no place in society.

“Everyone has the right to a world where their rights and freedoms are respected — the right to live and earn a living, freely, safely and protected by the law.”

Recall that South African mobs launched attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians, and looted and burnt their places of business in suburbs of Johannesburg and surrounding areas on Sunday, September 1, 2019, and Monday, September 2.

Three people were reported to have been killed in a fire started by a mob on an abandoned building in the Jeppestown area of Johannesburg.

The attacks have angered many Nigerians who have called for a boycott of South African businesses, like Shoprite, operating in Nigeria.

Shoprite staff, customers as well as others in the mall were thrown into a state of panic when a group started disruptive activities, knocking items off shelves.

A swift reaction from police officers then forced the protesters out onto the streets where they were filmed burning tyres and disrupting activities on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. Many were also reported to have thrown stones at the mall.

Another group of protesters demonstrated peacefully at Ikeja City Mall, Ikeja, which also houses a Shoprite outlet.

Again! Sanwo-Olu declares Lekki, Ikoyi plazas toll free today

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared the two toll plazas at Lekki and Ikoyi-Lekki Link Bridge toll free during peak hours today.
This is in continuation of the government’s simulation survey of traffic situation at the area to reduce traffic congestion.
A statement by the governor’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said a toll-free passage at the toll plaza on Lekki-Epe Expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge would run between 6:30am and 9:30am and also from 4:30pm till 7:30pm.
The statement said both toll plazas will be free for motorists going to and leaving Lekki axis to allow the state’s consultants complete the traffic simulation survey started a few weeks ago.
The toll free hours, the governor said, is to allow traffic consultants to the government carry out a comprehensive study of traffic flow around Lekki-Ikoyi-Victoria Island axes, which is part of the initiatives the government is bringing to diffuse vehicular gridlock at major business districts.
