Chrisland school attacks journalists, calls ‘rape story’ conspiracy against its brand

The Chrisland School on Tuesday sought to protect its brand and reputation in a letter to parents as the news of the defilement of a two year, 11 month old female pupil, by the school’s supervisor went viral.

The story captured courtroom proceedings on Monday of the trial of Adegboyega Adenekan, the school’s supervisor, who allegedly defiled the female pupil.

A video of the pupil in which she narrated how she was allegedly and serially defiled by Adenekan was played at an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court during the testimony of a clinical psychologist.

Chrisland School, however, on Feb. 13 in an email sent to parents of pupils of the school which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) noted that it has an untarnished reputation in its 40-year existence.

The school claimed that it had put in place measures to protect children and blamed the media for trying to tarnish its brand.

The school management wondered why the media were feasting on the case, which started since November 2016.

“Ours is an organisation with zero tolerance to abuse in whatever form and we have put in place structures and policies to ensure child protection in all our schools,” the email said.

Chrisland School clarified that the alleged incident took place at the Victoria Garden City (VGC) branch of the school and not the Lekki branch as reported in some quarters.

Throwing light on events that transpired in the case, the school said “It all started when a mother alleged that her daughter was molested.

“We were baffled that a mother could keep quiet and not notify the school or report it for two weeks.

“We also wondered why she left the child in the school for a month if indeed she was molested in the same school.”

Chrisland School claimed that it immediately set up a committee to investigate the allegation and reported the matter to the Ajah Police Station.

The school expressed doubts that the alleged defilement occurred on their premises noting that it had cooperated with the police, and the agencies involved in the case and had vowed to prosecute Adenekan if he was found guilty.

“The Lagos State Quality Assurance officers visited the school twice, interviewed many people including parents, staff and pupil and conducted an extensive investigation but nothing was found,” the email said.

The school further claimed that journalists who attended court proceedings and reported the trial were in “solidarity” with the child’s mother.

According to Chrisland School: “The issue erupted and took a fierce dimension when journalists who witnessed the court sitting last week in solidarity with the plaintiff who is a blogger started writing malicious stories (which are not a true picture of court proceedings) being circulated online.

“At the court proceedings, journalists were warned to be mindful of their stories since the matter is still in court.

“And is still an allegation until the accused is found guilty but they have continued with reckless abandon.”

Chrisland School alleged that journalists were paid to publish the allegedly malicious stories and there was a conspiracy against the brand of the school.

“We believe there is a conspiracy against the Chrisland brand and this is nothing but paid journalism.

“We pray that the good Lord will vindicate us.

“Please be assured that your children are in safe hands. We have successfully built a solid reputation over the last 40-years and we continue to stand for excellence,” the school said.

  • Motorists to pay new tolls on Lekki, Ikoyi from Feb 1 – LCC

Barring any last minute change of plan, the Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) has announced that it will increase the toll tariffs being charged at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza on Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1.

The LCC said in a statement that the upward review followed “extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State.

Although details of the new rate were not disclosed in the statement, the firm said N100 would be paid by any driver of a mini commuter bus using the Lekki-Epe toll plaza, which is an increase of N20 over the N80 currently being charged.

This, it said, was the agreement it reached with the drivers’ union during the consultations.

It said the toll fare increase was as a result of current economic and business realities that had adversely affected the cost of operations and maintenance of the company’s loan obligations.

The Managing Director, LCC, Mr. Mohammed Hassan, said the feedback and recommendations received during the series of consultations held in December 2017 with stakeholders in Eti-Osa Local Government Area and its environs considerably influenced the new toll fares to be paid by motorists plying the expressway and the Ikoyi Link Bridge.

Hassan said, “Since the commencement of tolling in December 2011, the toll tariffs had remained the same despite the continuous increase in the cost of operations to ensure that the toll plazas and the road infrastructure are well maintained.

“The toll review has also become necessary to enable the company to meet its loan obligations to its local and foreign lenders, considering the fact that foreign exchange rates have continued to increase astronomically in the last couple of years.

“The LCC cannot continue to operate or provide the services required from us if we do not review the toll tariffs.”

The LCC’s attempt to raise the fares on November 8 last year had received public outcry, which made the state government to prevail on the firm to suspend the action.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) says it has restored electricity supply to areas where its injection substations and equipment were submerged by flood on July 8.

Idemudia commended consumers in the affected areas for their patience and understanding during the period of outage.

He urged them to be safety conscious and avoid touching electrical appliances with wet hands.

Idemudia also advised them to always call the attention of professionals to electrical fault in their households or areas of residence.

“Residents should be careful not to touch our equipment and poles during flood.

“Whenever you noticed that our poles are on the ground, the first thing you should do is to stay away and call the attention of nearest EKEDC station to it,’’ Idemudia said.

Flood: Eko Disco announces power outage in Ikoyi, Victoria Island

Following the incessant rainfall that left some areas in Lagos state flooded yesterday, the management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Sunday announced that there would be a power outage in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and its environs as the company’s injection substations and equipment submerged in the flood.

Mr Godwin Idemudia, General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the company was having challenges in almost all its injection substations as a result of the flood from heavy rains on Saturday.

According to Idemudia, some of EKEDC transformers in the areas have been submerged.

The general manager said that the management of the company had directed that transmission be ‘deloaded’ in the affected areas for safety.

He said that the injection substations affected by the flood included Lekki Transmission Station, Agungi, Lekki, Ademola and Anifowoshe.

“Victoria Garden City, Water Front, Maroko and Oniru Injection Stations are completely out.

“We need to look at the extent of the effect of the flood on our equipment.

“However, we are presently working round the clock to restore supply to our esteemed customers,” he said.

Idemudia appealed to the customers to show understanding over the inconvenience the outage had caused.

TheNewsGuru.com had earlier published photos and videos of several areas of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and Victoria Garden City, VGC, areas of Lagos state submerged by the flood, due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the state.

Update: Federal Palace Hotel and other flooded highbrow areas of Lagos

More photos and videos have emerged of more highbrow areas of Lagos that were ravaged by flood. TheNewsGuru.com had earlier published photos and videos of several areas of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and Victoria Garden City, VGC, areas of Lagos state submerged by the flood, due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the state.

RESIDENTS INSTALL WATER PUMPING MACHINES TO PUMP OUT WATER FROM HOMES

Despite the fact that residents in these areas are not new to flood, this seems to be on a whole new level as the flooding left people using pumping machine to pump out water from their houses.

In some comic scenes, some residents were seen swimming in the flood waters while a video of an unidentified white man paddling his canoe (kayaking) on Ahmadu Bello Way, near The Galleria, in Victoria Island Road has gone viral on the internet.

The rich, the cliche goes, also cry! The incessant rain that has held Lagos captive for almost a week now has proved that, indeed, the rich truly also face all the vagaries that bedevil even the wretched of the earth. It is no respecter of the high and mighty!

Recall, earlier in the week, neighbours of Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, woke up to find their highbrow Victoria Garden City (VGC) estate in Lagos, has been taken over by a huge body of water. They virtually had to swim their way in and out of their homes.

Today, it appears residents of VGC are not the only ones who will be needing swimming lessons, Oniru Estate and the Lekki axis too have their own tears to shed. And the tears runs aplenty. All over Lekki phase one and two, and the corresponding estates in Oniru, is a blanket cover of water: they are all drenched in flood. Water has taken over and the proverbial tears is metaphorically flooding the eyelids of residents.

For most, various homes in Lekki, especially the lower floors are flooded. Their sitting rooms have become mini oceans of water; their properties either floating or submerged in rain water.

Their compounds and streets are flooded no go areas. In almost everywhere in Lekki, the middle and upper-class Nigerians are suddenly prisoners. Prisoners to flood. Helpless. They are inconsolable. They are no different from the worst part of Lagos any longer. Flood has become a leveller.

Ambode inaugurates emergency response unit in Lekki

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Friday promised to take the protection of lives and property as major priority of his administration by improving emergency services.

The governor made the promise at the inauguration of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit in Lekki.

He said the unit was positioned to effectively coordinate, receive and respond to distress calls.

LASEMA has three respond units located at Cappa in Oshodi, Command and Control unit in Alausa and Lekki, Lagos State.

The units at Ikorodu and Badagry are under construction.

Ambode, who was represented by Mr Oluseye Oladejo, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, said that the new dispatch centre was in continuation of the promise to promote safety and emergency management.

He said his administration was concerned about safety and security of lives and property.

Amobode added that the Lekki Response Unit was strategically located to facilitate quick response to emergencies on the waterways and for proximity to coastal areas.

“The government has also scaled up the activities of its Monitoring and Surveillance Unit to further equip them to prevent and militate against unnecessary loss of lives and properties.

“A paradigm shift from the orthodox strategy of waiting for emergency to occur and respond,” he said.

The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr Adeshina Tiamiyu, said the inauguration of the unit was an indication that the government was committed to prompt response to emergencies.

He said that the agency in the last one year had responded to numerous fire incidents, road accidents, flooding and gas explosions, among others.

Tiamiyu also acknowledged the support of the governor, who he said had continued to motivate those who respond promptly to emergencies.
