Former Italy PM Berlusconi has leukaemia – Source

Four-time Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been diagnosed with leukaemia, a source close to the matter said on Thursday, a day after he was admitted to intensive care with breathing problems.

The 86-year-old, whose media empire has made him a billionaire, is being treated in a cardiac unit of Milan’s San Raffaele hospital.

There has been no official comment on his condition, but the source’s diagnosis of leukaemia, which is a cancer of the blood cells, confirmed a report in the Corriere della Sera daily.

Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party is part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition, though the former prime minister does not have a role in government.

“I spoke this morning with Professor (Alberto) Zangrillo (Berlusconi’s personal doctor) and he told me that Berlusconi spent a quiet night, his condition is stable,” Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani told RAI state television.

Tajani, a long-time Berlusconi ally within Forza Italia, noted Berlusconi had survived a series of health problems.

“We all want to be optimistic and we hope that the lion will return soon to take charge of the party.

“He’s our political leader and of course, he never gives up,” Tajani told the broadcaster.

The party subsequently released a statement saying Berlusconi had spoken in the morning to senior Forza Italia allies and urged “maximum commitment” in parliament.

“The country needs us,” he was quoted as saying.

Berlusconi, who made his fortune from commercial television, has suffered repeated bouts of ill-health in recent years and came out of the same hospital just last week after being treated for a few days.

“There is obviously concern… (He) is alert but not in a position to deal with every situation,” Paolo Barelli, leader of Forza Italia in the lower house of parliament, told Italian radio.

Berlusconi stepped down as prime minister for the last time in 2011, weighed down by sleaze and scandal, including his notorious “bunga bunga” parties, as Italy came close to a Greek-style debt crisis.

But he returned to the Italian Senate after a national election last September and there is no obvious successor as leader of his party.

As well as his enduring influence on Italian politics, Berlusconi’s Fininvest family holding group retains control of the MediaForEurope broadcast business.

His son Pier Silvio Berlusconi is the chief executive of the company.

Berlusconi built Italy’s biggest commercial TV network and gained an international profile as the owner of European soccer champions AC Milan before entering politics in 1994 when the previous political class was brought down by a corruption scandal.

His health has deteriorated in recent years. He had heart surgery in 2016, has also had prostate cancer, and has been repeatedly admitted to the hospital since contracting Coronavirus in 2020.

Leukaemia: Accolades from team mates, fans as Ikeme quits football

Praises have been pouring in from various sources for Nigeria and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who retired from football on Friday on health grounds.

Former Super Eagles’ number one Ikeme, who started the journey to the Russia 2018 World Cup with the Eagles, was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017 but entered into complete remission in June.

He announced his retirement in a statement on Wolves website.

I spoke with the doctor and he suggested I should retire, because of the toll the treatment has taken on my body,” Ikeme said.

He thinks it’s what is best for me and I can’t really risk trying to come back, my health is the priority. I want to be here for my children, family and friends. In the grand scheme of things with my life in danger, it’s the minimum price I have to pay to spend the rest of my time with my family.”

However, praises poured in for the 32-year-old ex-Wolves keeper with his fellow keepers hailing him.

Having been at the club since the age of 14, Carl is far more than just a player in our eyes – he is our brother and an important part of our family,” said Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi.

When Carl came to tell us (with) his news, yes there was sadness, but also great happiness to see him so healthy and hungry for the opportunities that lay ahead of him.

Carl is strong, a fighter, something he has proven in his playing career and also during what has been a very challenging time for him, so I have no doubt he will be a success in whatever he does next. We wish Carl all the very best for the future, but remind him he will always remain a part of the Wolves family.”

Goalkeepers from various nationalities and clubs in England also praised their former colleague.

In a video clip posted on the Wolves Twitter handle, while some of the players sang to the tune of the famous Cuban song ‘Guantanamera’ to render ‘One Carl Ikeme, there is only one Carl Ikeme’, others only chanted the phrase.

Some of the keepers in the video are Iker Casillas, Petr Cech, David Seaman, Joe Hart, Boaz Myhill, Mike Stowell, Adam Federici, Walter Zenger and Mark Schwarzer

Others are Asmir Begovic, Tomasz Kuszczak, Jack Ruddy, Andreas Sondergaard, David Stockdale, Will Norris and Lukasz Fabianski.

Ikeme was in goal for Nigeria’s first three matches of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. His first cap was in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Tanzania in Dar es Salaam in September 2015.

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, diagnosed with acute leukaemia

Super Eagles and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, has been diagnosed with acute Leukaemia.

The diagnosis was confirmed in a statement by his club, Wolves who has also expressed their support for the 31-year-old.

The club said, Ikeme will start an immediate course of chemotherapy as he begins a lengthy battle against the disease.

“It would be an understatement to say that everyone at Wolves has been shocked and saddened to hear the news of Carl’s diagnosis,” said Wolves’ Managing Director Laurie Dalrymple.

“That relates to both players and staff as Carl has been at the club for a very long time and remains such an integral personality within the group.

“At the same time, we all know what a fighter and a competitor Carl is, and I have no doubt that he will take all of those attributes into this battle.

“Similarly, its goes without saying that Carl and his family will receive the full love and support that we at Wolves can provide – we are all with him every single step of the way towards a full recovery.

“We are speaking to Carl regularly, and sending him our very best wishes as he comes to terms with this news and starts his recovery.”
