I know I hurt many Bayern fans – Lewandowski reveals

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski admits he has hurt Bayern Munich fans and hopes he can fix his relationship with them

He is happy with his decision to sign for Barca, as he explained in a recent interview shortly after the 6-0 win over Pumas.

Lewandowski is, however, slightly sad about the manner in which things ended with Bayern Munich.

“I know that hurt a lot of fans,” he told Sport1. “I can understand that and now I just apologise for that. At that time it was important and necessary for me to make it clear that I was ready for a change.

“At the end of the day, we are all human. After 12 years in Germany, it was clear to me that my time was over. I wanted to make that clear, and of course it was not easy for Bayern to accept a sale during this phase.

“It was a difficult situation for everyone involved and we had to find the best solution. I needed this change, this move to another country, to another club. I feel like a child who has a new toy.”

Some Bayern fans yelled pro-Real Madrid slogans like ‘Hala Madrid’ at the striker as he left the Bavarian’s training camp when he returned to collect his things.

“Yes, I heard that, and I laughed,” he said. “But there were also some people shouting my name. That was really nice.

“In the last few weeks I have also met some fans in the street who have expressed their understanding for my situation and wished me all the best.”

Robert Lewandowski joins Barca teammates in US

Robert Lewandowski is in the US today to join his new Barcelona teammates.

Bayern Munich accepted Barca’s offer for the Pole on Saturday.

“I am here to help Barça get back to the top and win as many titles as possible,” said Lewandowski today upon touching down in the US.

“I’m finally here. I am very happy to be at Barça. The last days have been long, but in the end the agreement has become a reality. I am ready to face this new challenge in my career. I am a guy who likes to win matches and titles. I hope that the season starts and ends well in this sense.

“I have always wanted to play for a great club in LaLiga and this is a great opportunity for me. It is also a challenge for my private life.

“It was easy to make the decision. I want to play and win titles and I know that with Xavi this will be very possible. He knows perfectly how to lead Barça. He was an amazing player and now he is a great coach. He has a great future and I want to be part of it.

“I am a footballer who always wants to win. We have great players, with a lot of quality, in the squad. I am excited about what we can all achieve together.”

Lewandowski reaches personal terms with Barca

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is ready to put pen to paper on a £175,000-per-week deal at Barcelona.

Mundo Deportivo says the 33-year-old will sign a three-year contract with the Catalans worth £27m.

Paris Saint-Germain had threatened to hijack the deal at the eleventh hour, but the Polish superstar is said to be loyal to the LaLiga giants.

The move will speak the end of Lewandowski’s eight years at Bayern Munich, during which time he has scored as astonishing 344 times in 374 appearances.

Bayern are demanding €40m from Barca to sell the veteran.

My time at Bayern Munich is over – Lewandowski

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has declared his intention to leave the German champions.

TheNewsGuru reports that the Polish international has a year on his Bayern deal.

“My time at Bayern is over, I don’t see any chance of continuing at this club,” Lewandowski said.

“The transfer is probably the best solution for both parties.

“Bayern is a serious club but I hope they don’t keep me just because with the contract in hand they can do it.”

He added: “I prefer not to say anything more for now. After playing my last game with the national team there will be time to say more and maybe I’ll have more information.”

Robert Lewandowski quits Bayern Munich training

Bayern Munich suffered a scare around their star striker Robert Lewandowski on Tuesday when he had to abandon training after slipping while attempting a shot.

World Footballer of the Year Lewandowski left the public session prematurely for medical examinations after the incident.

“I didn’t hit the ball cleanly and it hurts a bit,” Lewandowski said amid reports of a knee problem.

Bayern Munich later spoke of “a small injury” without disclosing any details in a club statement.

The Bundesliga champions will not want to be without their top goalscorer in the deciding weeks of the season.

Bayern Munich have reached the quarter-finals of the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League, with the draw slated for Friday, and which will be played April 5/April 6 and April 12/April 13.

They went out at this stage last year against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) when Lewandowski was sidelined with injury.

Bayern Munich are top of the Bundesliga but their lead could be reduced to four points by Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

They play on Saturday against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, followed by an international break — where Poland’s Lewandowski has no game — before an April 2 date at Freiburg.

But there was also good news at the Bayern Munich camp as key midfielder Leon Goretzka returned to team training from a knee injury.

It is an injury which has seen him out of action for more than three months.

Corentin Tolisso was also back from an injury sustained last month.

“It went well and it was fun. Of course I’m excited to take the next steps now,” Goretzka said. “It’s extremely liberating. I hope I can come back better now.”

Lewandowski named Polish sports person of 2021

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been named Polish sports person of the year for the third time.

The 33-year-old, who broke Gerd Mueller’s record of 40 goals in a Bundesliga season last term, also won in 2015 and 2020.

“The sports person of the year award means a lot to me because the choice is made by you —— the fans,” Lewandowski said on Instagram.

A gala took place in Warsaw late on Saturday for the 87th time.

  • Bundesliga players pick Lewandowski as best player, Klopp as best coach

Bundesliga players pick Lewandowski as best player, Klopp as best coach

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is the best football player and Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp the best coach, according to a survey among German Bundesliga players conducted by Kicker sports magazine.

Kicker said in its latest edition on Monday that Lewandowski garnered 43.2 per cent of the vote from 234 players polled.

Liverpool’s Mo Salah was a distant second with 20.5 per cent, and Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) third.

Klopp was first in the coaching list with 34.6 per cent.

He emerged winner ahead of fellow German Thomas Tuchel from 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea (24.8) and Spain’s Pep Guardiola from 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City.

Bundesliga players also rated the English top-flight the best league with a big majority of 67.9 per cent.

Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich meanwhile earned the dubious honour of being voted disappointment of the current season.

That result likely has to do with his coronavirus stance rather than his skills on the pitch.

Kimmich first voiced doubts about vaccination and has been sidelined since early November owing to two quarantine periods, a coronavirus infection and related lung problems.

  • Mbappe, Lewandowski not in favour of biennial World Cup

Mbappe, Lewandowski not in favour of biennial World Cup

Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski have expressed concerns about the lack of rest footballers will get if plans for a biennial World Cup come to fruition.

FIFA’s proposal to host the tournament every two years instead of four has largely been met with scepticism.

Both Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Mbappe and Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski are not in favour of the change.

Mbappe suggested that the quality of the spectacle would suffer if the health of players is not taken into account.

“We like to play but it’s too much,” Mbappe said in Dubai, where he was named men’s player of the year at the Globe Soccer Awards on Monday. “If people want to see quality, we have to take a break.

“Playing the World Cup every two years would make this competition ‘normal’ and that shouldn’t be the case. The World Cup, the (UEFA) Nations League… we love to play but it’s too much.

“If people want to see quality, I think we have to take a break.”

Lewandowski echoed the France international’s sentiments, stating that the schedule is already congested even without the added burden of an increased number of World Cups.

“We have a lot of games in the year, very dense weeks,” Lewandowski said at the same event. “If you want to give the fans something different, you need a break.

“We have to look into the future, if we want to play a World Cup every two years, the level will drop. It’s impossible for the body and the mind to perform at the same level.”

  • Bayern have Lewandowski and don’t need Haaland – Kahn

Bayern have Lewandowski and don’t need Haaland – Kahn

Bayern Munich chairman Oliver Kahn has insisted there is no need to move for Borussia Dortmund’s Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland as the Bundesliga champions “have Robert Lewandowski.”

Kahn was following the line previously voiced by club president Herbert Hainer when he told Friday’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung that Lewandowski “will also still score 30-40 goals for a couple of years.”

Poland’s Lewandowski has been racking up scoring records in recent years but is 33 and has a contract to 2023.

Haaland meanwhile is not only considered the next big thing but at 21 likely has his best years ahead of him.

It is widely reported he has an exit clause in his Borussia Dortmund contract, valid next summer, which is considerably below his current market value.

Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Haaland, who realistically has his pick of top clubs across the continent if he does decide to leave Borussia Dortmund.

  • Lewandowski equals Muller’s Bundesliga goal record

Lewandowski equals Muller’s Bundesliga goal record

Robert Lewandowski equalled Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record for goals scored in a single calendar year as Bayern Munich thrashed Stuttgart.

Lewandowski’s second goal on Tuesday was his 42nd in 2021, matching Muller’s haul from 1972.

Serge Gnabry scored either side of half-time to put the visitors 2-0 up, before Lewandowski struck twice in three minutes.

Germany international Gnabry completed his hat-trick two minutes later.

One more goal in Bayern’s final game of the year – at home to Wolfsburg on Friday – will give Lewandowski the record outright.

In May, the Poland striker scored in the last minute of the 2020-21 season to break Muller’s record for Bundesliga goals in a campaign.

Gnabry, who was involved in all five goals in Stuttgart, has found the net nine times in Germany’s top flight this season – more than any other midfielder in the division.

The win moves Julian Nagelsmann’s side nine points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who can cut the gap at the top of the table to six points with victory at home to bottom club Greuther Furth on Wednesday.
