PDP wants credible LG elections in Anambra

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has advised the newly constituted Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC),j to be independent and transparent in its conduct of local government elections.

Chairman of the PDP in Anambra, Mr Chigozie Igwe, gave the advice on Thursday in Awaka in reaction to the constitution of the new ANSIEC.

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo inaugurated a six-man ANSIEC board on Tuesday with Magistrate Chinelo Osakwe as chairman.

Igwe, who welcomed the constitution and inauguration of the electoral body, urged the body to adhere to the principles of transparency, fairness and impartiality before and during the elections.

“The PDP in Anambra wishes to call on ANSIEC to ensure that all eligible voters are given the opportunity to participate in the electoral process without any form of intimidation or harassment.

“We will not accept any form of manipulation or rigging in the upcoming local government elections; as a party, we are fully prepared and positioned to win the majority of the elections,” he said.

  • PDP withdraws from Kebbi LG polls contest

PDP withdraws from Kebbi LG polls contest

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Kebbi, has withdrawn from participation in the forthcoming Local Government Council elections slated for August 31.

The Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Bello Usman-Suru, made this known while briefing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

“Having made a wider consultation with some segments of the party membership and prominent elders; it becomes pertinent to inform you that the party is no longer participating in the local government councils elections slated for August 31st, due to the following reasons:

“The Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIECOM) and all the Commissioners are card carrying members of APC in Kebbi State.

“Therefore, organising free, fair, and credible elections will be a mirage.

“We voiced out our discomfort with their appointments in several communications to the Kebbi State Government and relevant agencies involved in elections management in the state.

“PDP, therefore, doesn’t have any confidence in the leadership of the State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct the elections freely,” he said.

Usman-Suru also lamented the creation of administrative fees in respect of Chairmanship, Vice Chairmanship, and Councillorship as prescribed in the elections guidelines.

This, he said, did not only disenfranchised some candidates but also grossly violates freedom of choice to candidates, political parties and the electorates.

The chairman said: “The released election guidelines specified that the administrative fees can be paid up to Aug. 30th, but abruptly shifted backward to Aug. 7th.

“This amounts to changing the rules in the middle of the game and a clear attempt to discourage opposition parties from participating in the elections.

“It is against this background that PDP wishes to inform its teeming supporters statewide that our participation in the elections will only signify acceptance of an illegality, fraudulent system, and stage-managed elections as done in the previous exercise conducted in 2022 under the same leadership.”

Usman-Suru appealed to all PDP members across the 21 LGAs to remain calm and focused as “we continue to reflect on the present and prospects of our great party at local, state, and national levels.”

The chairman expressed optimism that the National Assembly would consider and pass a bill for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take over the conduct and management of LG elections for free, fair, credible, and acceptable elections across Nigeria.

LG election: Court stops INEC from releasing voter register to Kwara

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, restrained INEC from releasing the national voter register to the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) for the conduct of local government elections.

Justice Peter Lifu, in a ruling on an ex-parte motion brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also stopped KWSIEC and the state’s Attorney General (AG) from using the voter register for the Sept. 21 polls.

The PDP, through its Lawyer, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, had sued INEC, KWSIEC, Kwara AG, Inspector-General (I-G) of Police and State Security Service (SSS) as 1st to 5th defendants respectively.

Justice Lifu, in the ruling, equally restrained the I-G and SSS from participating in or providing security protection for the conduct of local government elections in Kwara pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by PDP.

The PDP had, in the affidavit, alleged that the KWSIEC was in grievous contravention, breach and violation of Sections 9, 28, 29 and 106 of the Electoral Act 2022, Sections 20 (1) and 21 (1) of Kwara State Local Government Electoral (Amendment) Law, 2024.

It claimed that all the conditions and precedents contained in Local Government Electoral Laws in Kwara had been deliberately jettisoned and violated under unacceptable circumstances.

Among others, PDP claimed to be a duly registered political party in Nigeria, eligible to participate and field candidates to contest elections in Nigeria, including the 2024 local government elections in Kwara sought to be conducted by the defendants.

It alleged that KWSIEC had applied to INEC for the voter register for Kwara for use in the conduct of the poll, which the party said, was in breach and violation of the provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act, 2022 and Kwara State Local Government Electoral (Amendment) Law, 2024.

It said despite the gross violations of the electoral laws, the INEC had shown the desire to release the register to the KWSIEC in violation of the Electoral Act, 2022.

After the lawyer moved the motion, Justice Lifu ordered all the parties in the suit to maintain status quo ante bellum pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiff’s motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.

The judge, however, ordered PDP to enter into a fresh undertaking to indemnify the five defendants at a cost that would be assessed by the court in case its application turns out to be frivolous and ought not to have been granted by the court.

He adjourned the matter until Aug. 12 for hearing.

He recalled that the commission, had earlier announced the postponement of the council election, from June, 2024, to June, 2025, following the amendment of the state electoral law.

“However, it’s my belief that you are aware of the recent Supreme Court judgement directing all state governments, to put in place, democratically elected local government councils in their respective states, with immediate effect.

“In compliance with the recent Supreme Court judgement, the JISIEC, being law authority, deemed it necessary to revert to its earlier decision on LG election, and unanimously requested for re-amendament of the state electoral law, to conform with the Supreme Court Judgement, and consequently fixed Saturday, October 5, 2024 as new date, for the conduct of LG election in Jigawa state,” he said.

Just In: We can conveniently conduct LG elections – INEC

The apex electoral body in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it can comfortably handle the conduct of local government elections if the responsibility falls on it.

The chairman of the commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu said this on Thursday, July 25, when he appeared before the joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on preparations for the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.

He said INEC has the capacity to handle the local government elections but that would only be possible pending when the law is amended to permit it to do so.

He pointed out that the Commission had been conducting area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory which has been devoid of the problems associated with the conduct of local government elections.

He pointed out some advantages of INEC handling elections to include that there are regular elections as when due, stability of tenure, and also that there has never been a caretaker committee in the FCT.

He noted that there has never been a time one political party has won all the seats at the elections as is common in the states.

He said if INEC handles the election, it would be better for democracy.

He, however, said this can only happen if the constitution is amended to take the responsibility from state electoral commissions.

Downpour, apathy, late arrival of materials mar Ebonyi LG election

A downpour, which lingered from July 19 disrupted the commencement of the Local Government Area elections in Ebonyi State on Saturday.

A correspondent, who monitored the situation around Abakaliki and surrounding areas, reports that people were still inside their houses as of 9 am due to the downpour.

There were no voters in many polling units visited while officials of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) and security agents were scarcely seen.

The rain continued unabated in the early hours of Saturday in most parts of the State and had been heavy as at the time of this report.

A Resident of Abakaliki, Mr Justus Okafor, told NAN that there was no need defying the rains to vote in an “already concluded elections”.

“The election is all about the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) so why should I expose myself to unfavourable weather conditions to come out early.

“I might still come out to vote but definitely not under this rain,” he said.

An Electoral Officer who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the elections would go on as planned with or without the downpour.

“We are set for the elections and hope for a massive turnout as the day progresses.

“Our job is to conduct the election while the politicians bother on who controls the electorate,” he said.

Mrs Stella Okeh, an Election Observer, urged voters to come out en masse and cast their votes to ensure a credible process.

“The notion that the ruling party will dictate proceedings at the election should be corrected because other parties are equally participating.

Ebonyi LGA election witnesses low turnout, late arrival of materials

It was further observed that the local government election in Ebonyi suffered voters’ apathy and boycott by opposition parties as only the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) presented candidates for the exercise.

The election was held in the 171 wards of the 13 councils of the State on Saturday.

People came out in trickles to vote while election materials and officers of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) arrived late to many polling units.

“You can see, it is only the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that are in for the elections and no other parties,” Nwafor said.

Another resident and politician, Onyeka Nworie, alleged that the EBSIEC did not give political parties a level playing ground to participate in the elections.
