The Police in Kaduna State has ordered restriction of human and vehicular movement within the state from Friday midnight to Saturday 6p.m.

The order is contained in a statement by the Public Relations, ASP Mohammed Jalije on Friday in Kaduna.

He said that the order was given by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Abdullahi Mudassiru.

“The CP Kaduna state has ordered the strict enforcement of the restriction of human and vehicular movement into and within the state.

“This is in compliance with the directive of Kaduna state government during the local government election scheduled to hold on Saturday across the 23 local government areas of the State.

“The general public is hereby informed that the restriction of movement will take effect from midnight (0000hrs to 1800hrs) and it covers all the entry points into the state and within the entire 23 local government areas where the elections will be held.

“No large gatherings or campaign of whatever guise will be tolerated within the stipulated restriction hours and violators of the said order will be dealt with according to extant laws of the state.

“The command is therefore calling on all law abiding citizens of the state to comply with this restriction order since all eligible voters are allowed to go out and exercise their franchise without fear of intimidation from any quarter,’’ he said.

According to him, effective security deployment has been made to secure all the poling units and collation centers across the state and a Rapid Response Team situated in all the local government areas to promptly respond to distress calls.

Jalije advised that while the election is ongoing, the public should be security conscious of their environment.

He urged people to report suspicious activities or persons to the nearest security formation or via the Kaduna police command designated emergency mobile phone numbers- 08075391105 and 07039675856 for prompt intervention.

“The Commissioner of Police thus solicits for understanding from the public as to any inconvenience the restriction might cause,” he said.

  • Residents express fear as Lagos, Ogun conduct LG polls today

Residents express fear as Lagos, Ogun conduct LG polls today

Eligible voters in Lagos and Ogun States will file out to elect their preferred candidates and party in the local government elections schedule to hold in both neighbouring states today.

Already, both state governments have placed restrictions on human and vehicular movements to allow for a smooth running of the scheduled polls.

While Lagos State said movement would be restricted between 8 am and 3pm, Ogun State pegged its restriction between 8am and 2pm.

The Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, in a statement on Thursday said, “The Lagos State Government has announced restriction of movement across the State between the hours of 8am and 3pm on Saturday, July, 24, 2021.

“The restriction is to enable the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission conduct hitch-free election into positions of chairmen and councillors in all the 57 local governments and local council development areas.”

He added that, “The restriction would facilitate the ease of movement of the electorate, election materials and LASIEC officials for the sanctity of the election, effective monitoring and enhanced security.”

Similarly, the Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, Babatunde Osibodu, said there would be restriction of human and vehicular movements between 8am and 2pm.

“We are going to restrict movement on Saturday between 8am and 2pm during the Saturday local government election,” he said.

Osibodu said the commission had put in place necessary machinery to ensure the release of all results at the commission’s headquarters within few hours after the elections.

He said, “We are ready to conduct a hitch-free election into the vacant seats of chairmen and councillors in the 20 councils across the state.”

    PDP boycotts poll in Ogun

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State has withdrawn from the poll.

The Chairman of the party in the state, Sikirulai Ogundele, said this in on Thursday in Abeokuta.

Ogundele said the withdrawal was sequel to a judgment of an Ogun State High Court between him and the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission.

Ogundele had dragged OGSIEC to court for dealing with a faction loyal to late Buruji Kashamu of the PDP in the State.

“Sequel to the judgement of the Ogun State High Court, Isabo in suit no M/55/2021 between Sikirulai Ogundele VS OGSIEC, affirming the consent judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja as delivered on 22nd June, 2021, the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party under the able Chairmanship of Dr Sikirulai Ogundele hereby make the following pronouncement:

“That consequence upon the said judgement in suit M/55/2021, Ogun State PDP withdraws its participation in the Ogun State Local Government Election which is scheduled for Saturday 24th July, 2021.

“That all candidates of the party who have been earlier screened by the party to contest in the LG election and all our teeming party members and loyal supporters are enjoined to remain calm and sustain their confidence in the leadership of the party,” he said.

Residents in fear of possible violence

Residents in both states have however expressed fear of possible violence. Some have also vowed to stay indoors despite been eligible to vote. They cited inadequate security, party rancour and thuggery as parts of reasons the election may turn violent.

‘I have a feeling the election will be violent hence I may not participate. You know LGs are the closest to the people so when violence breaks out the everyday people are first causalities. I’m also not sure of adequate security. So I can’t participate in an election that my safety is not guaranteed,’ a Lagos resident said.

An Ogun State resident shared a similar sentiment. ‘Even in their campaigns there was violence. What makes you think the election proper will not be violent? Already, the PDP in Ogun State has withdrawn from the election. Are those not possible signs of grievances and violence? The street urchins will have a field day. They will cause chaos and attack people openly especially if you decline voting for their candidate. Why should I subject myself to such punishment when in actual sense the candidate that will win already know themselves? See its their thing, let them go and handle it. Count me out”.

PDP ‘ll prove its voting strength during Rivers LG polls – Wike’s CoS

Chief of Staff to Rivers Governor, Mr Emeka Woke, has said that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will show its dominance in the state during the forthcoming local government election.

Woke said this on Tuesday during a campaign by the party for the April 17 council poll, in Emohua, headquarters of Emohua Local Government Council.

He urged PDP stalwarts and supporters in the area to come out and vote en masse for the party to reassert their voting strength.

The governor’s aide also noted that the Gov. Nyesom Wike-led administration’s huge investments in infrastructure across the 23 council areas in the state would spur people into voting overwhelmingly for the party at the poll.

“INEC will soon embark on revalidation exercise. So we need to use the election to reassert our strength,” he said.

Woke recalled that during the 2019 general elections, PDP recorded some of its highest votes in Emohua, expressing confidence that similar feat would be repeated in the forthcoming council polls.

In his opening remarks, Director-General of PDP Campaign Council, Mr John Wokoma, said that the party was sure of victory, based on the achievements of the Wike-led administration.

Similarliy, Mr Uche Miniku, the PDP Chairman in the council area, assured that Emohua would continue to support the party because of the enormous development projects already executed in the area by the present administration.

The PDP Chairmanship candidate in the council election, Dr Chidi Lloyd, said that if elected, his administration would consolidate on the good work of the governor.

LIoyd explained that his development blueprint for Emohua local council would be transformational and impactful on the lives of the people.

  • BREAKING: APC pulls out of ongoing Delta Council poll

BREAKING: APC pulls out of ongoing Delta Council poll

Main opposition party in Delta State, All Progressives Congress (APC) has pulled out of the ongoing local government election in the state.

The party cited several irregularities as reasons for its decision.

The party disclosed this in a statement signed by its caretaker Publicity Secretary, Sylvester Imonina, and issued to newsmen, Saturday.

Imonina stated that the members of the party who protested the alleged irregularities were harassed and arrested by security operatives.

According to the statement, the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) refused to allow representatives of the APC to take a record of the electoral materials which were distributed to the 25 LGAs, on Friday in Asaba.

“Some days ago we told Deltans that there were evil machinations to deprive Deltans of their rights to choose who to lead them at the local government level.

“True to the concerns raised by our Party days ago, DSIEC, PDP and Govr. Okowa has done the evil they know how to do best.

“Saturday, 5th of March, 2021 at DSIEC headquarters in Asaba, Delta APC Representatives were not allowed to take statistics of the materials that DSIEC intended transporting to the different LGAs in the State.

“This is despite the insistence of the party’s Representatives that it is the right of political parties to inspect and confirm what material is meant for ‘what and where,” he noted.

Continuing, the statement said “11 a.m today (Saturday), materials that were purportedly transported to DSIEC offices at the LGAs and some Police Stations were yet to be distributed.

“In Burutu and Patani Local Government Areas, election materials were not taken to anywhere near the Local Government Areas.

“In LGAs where materials were purportedly taken, there were/are no results’ sheets. This to our mind is evil. There cannot be elections without results sheets!

“In Ethiope East, an unconfirmed report says that materials were purportedly taken there. However, there are also no results sheets.

“In few places in Asaba and the home town of the Governor where what looks like “elections materials” were taken to, there were no election results’ sheets too.

“Undiluted information reaching Delta APC is that DSIEC in connivance with PDP and the Governor has directed that apart from selected places where there shall be stage-managed elections, and some unscrupulous journalists made to dish out the falsehood that there was a peaceful election, it was their plans that there should be no release of election materials to any Ward.”

Imonina further posited that the “APC members and Deltans who believe in democratic tenets have been to the different DSIEC offices and Police Stations where election materials were supposedly kept, but nothing is happening in those places.

“In other words, results are being written in undisclosed homes and offices with the connivance of security men. Some APC members and leaders who peacefully protested the anti-democratic vices going on in the different DSIEC offices and Police Stations are being intimidated, harassed and humiliated.

“In particular, at the Police Station in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, on the instigation of PDP leaders in Isoko North, some APC stalwarts were arrested and still being kept in a police cell by the overzealous Divisional Police Officer and men under his control.

“In view of the above, Delta APC hereby boycotts the charade called ‘Delta State Local Government Council elections.’ Though, the decision of Delta APC might be painful in view of the huge resources already committed by the party and our candidates to the project of making Delta State a better place.”

However, the statement enjoined members to remain peaceful in their bid to “bringing to the attention of Deltans and Nigerians the sacrilegious acts (murdering of democracy) of DSIEC, PDP and Gov Ifeanyi Okowa.”

APC missing in action as Ebonyi holds LG polls

The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) on Saturday conducted local government poll to elect 13 chairmen and 171 councillors across the state.
According to the Chairman of EBSIEC, Mr Jossy Eze, 13 registered political parties took part in the exercise.
However, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is the major opposition party in the state, boycotted the poll.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Mr Eze Nwachukwu, the state chairman of APC had earlier in the year hinted that APC would not participate in the poll.
He contended that the process leading to the exeecise was not transparent nor credible, hence the party would not field candidates.
NAN reports that the poll, which commenced around 9am, was marred by voter apathy in most parts of the state.
Meanwhile, Gov. Dave Umahi, who spoke with newsmen after casting his vote around 2pm at his Onuofukwuru polling unit 013 in Umanaga, Uburu, described the election as peaceful and successful.
Umahi commended the electoral commission for the credible and transparent conduct of the poll and expressed satisfaction with voters’ turnout.
“We are happy with the peaceful conduct of the election and I want to commend the electorate for coming out to choose their next leaders at the grassroots.
“We commend EBSIEC for conducting a peaceful, transparent and credible poll,” the governor said.
Meanwhile, Eni Uduma-Chima, the chairmanship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Afikpo South, has described the turnout of voters in the area as impressive.
He said that the development was a demonstration of the people’s faith in the democratic process at the grassroots.
Udumai-Chima, who voted around 1pm at Amaogbu Village Square polling unit 005, expressed optimism that PDP would sweep the poll because of the sterling performance of the Umahi-led administration.
He commended the electorate in the area for coming out en mass to vote for candidates of their choice in the election.
“I’m overwhelmed with the level of the turnout by our people for the election. It is a show of appreciation of the democracy dividend enjoyed by the people.
“Our people came back from Lagos, Port Harcourt, Aba and other parts of the country to take part in the election.
“It is due to the trust they have in their political leaders because leadership is trust,” the PDP candidate said.
Udumai-Chima, who was seeking re-election, expressed confidence that he would win.
He gave assurance that his second term would be devoted to the completion of ongoing projects started in his first term.
NAN reports that the poll was earlier slated to hold in April but postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
