  • Ligue 1: Lille eyes prolific Nigerian striker, Gift Orban

Ligue 1: Lille eyes prolific Nigerian striker, Gift Orban

Prolific Nigerian goal poacher, Gift Orban who currently plies his trade for Belgium side, KAA Gent could be on his way to French Ligue 1 side Lille metropole FC.

Recall that Lille’s potent striker, Jonathan David is being priced away and Orban is being tipped to replace him if he leaves.

The potential agreement comes as Lille seek to bolster their attacking options following the anticipated departure of their star striker, who notched an impressive 24 goals during the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season, propelling them to a fifth-place finish.

With David expected to move out of France during this transfer window, Lille have reportedly identified Orban as their primary target to fill the void left by the Canadian dynamo.

According to Foot Mercato, the French side are edging closer to reaching an agreement with Orban’s representatives, as the negotiations with Gent are slated to commence once David’s departure is finalised.

If all goes well, Orban will make his second transfer of the year, having joined Gent from Stabaek in January.

The young Nigerian talent has been exceptional in front of goal, grabbing 20 goals in 22 appearances since his move to Genk last January.

Ligue 1: Mbappe fires back at PSG

France and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar, Kylian Mbappe has reacted to the backlash he received after he sent a letter to the French club.

Recall that Mbappe sent a letter to PSG telling them that he has no intention to stay at the club beyond 2024 when his current deal expires.

The player’s decision has since angered the club, leading to mass backlash from PSG, and they have reportedly made him available for sale this summer.

PSG do not want the former Monaco man to leave for free when his contract runs down in June 2024 and their president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is said to be furious with the striker.

Mbappe said he didn’t expect such fury in the aftermath of sending his letter.

According to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Mbappe said, “Honestly, I did not think I was going to offend anyone. I only sent a letter. I didn’t know a letter could kill someone. It’s just a letter. I don’t care about the reactions.”

Should Mbappe refuse to extend his contract with the club, he could be sold before the beginning of next season to avoid leaving as a free agent

  • PSG confirms Messi is leaving club

PSG confirms Messi is leaving club

Argentina football great Lionel Messi will leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after Saturday’s final Ligue 1 match of the season against Clermont Foot, coach Christoph Galtier confirmed on Thursday.

It has long been speculated that Messi would quit PSG when his two-year deal expired after being suspended by the recently-crowned French champions in early May.

The suspension was for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

“It’s his last game at the Parc des Princes,” Galtier told reporters. “I have had the privilege of coaching the best player in football history.”

The coach said he hoped Messi would be given a good send-off.

PSG ultras have booed the forward on occasions this season.

The 35-year-old has been heavily linked in the media with Saudi club Al-Hilal.

His great rival Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Saudi side Al-Nassr in January.

Former club FC Barcelona, where Messi had spent his entire career before financial problems meant he joined PSG, have also shown interest in his return.

But pundits say this is just a smokescreen to appease fans and the same financial constraints will prevent the Spanish champions from re-signing him.

MLS side Inter Miami — part owned by David Beckham — have also been mentioned in the media as a possible destination.

But Saudi Arabia looks the most likely option for Messi, who has made no recent comment about his future.

He long ago said he would like to retire at Newell’s Old Boys in his Argentinian birthplace of Rosario, but there has been little movement on this front.

Messi, who finally achieved his dream of winning the FIFA World Cup last year, wants to continue playing until at least the Copa America in June and July 2024 in the U.S.

  • Kylian Mbappe confirms transfer plans

    Kylian Mbappe confirms transfer plans

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Kylian Mbappe said he is staying at the club for the next season amid reports he would be set to transfer to Real Madrid.

“I’ve always wanted to leave a mark. I didn’t expect to win so much so early [in my career], but I’m happy to make history in my country. I’m happy and I’ll be here next season,” Mbappe said after winning the Ligue 1 player of the season award for the fourth year running.

Mbappe has fired PSG to their record 11th Ligue 1 title with a league-high 28 goals, and still has another game — against Clermont on the final day — to add to that tally.

His contract with PSG expires in June 2025, but the France international is repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid.

  • Ligue 1: PSG lift Messi’s suspension, star him in fixture against Ajaccio

Ligue 1: PSG lift Messi’s suspension, star him in fixture against Ajaccio

Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint Germain (PSG) have lifted Lionel Messi’s suspension and the Argentine looks set to feature in the match against Ajaccio on Saturday.

Recall that Messi was suspended after traveling to Saudi Arabia for personal reasons without getting approval from the management of PSG.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner sat out last weekend’s win at Troyes after missing a training session to fulfil commitments in his role as a Saudi tourism ambassador.

Although Messi later apologised the talk of a new contract at PSG has not seen the light of the day.

After two uninspiring years in France, Messi looks set to play in Saudi Arabia next season as part of a blockbuster deal that would see him follow arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo to the Gulf kingdom.

Messi, who turns 36 next month, will sign a “huge” contract with an as-yet-unnamed club, a source close to the negotiations told AFP this week.

“Messi is a done deal. He will play in Saudi Arabia next season,” said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“The contract is exceptional. It’s huge. We are just finalising some small details,” added the source, who is not authorised to speak to the media.

PSG have yet to confirm the departure, while Messi’s father and agent Jorge insists the World Cup winner has not decided where he will play next season.

But it appears certain his stint at PSG will conclude in June after the club hopes to celebrate a record 11th French league crown.

“If the club had wanted to renew his contract, it would have been done earlier,” said a PSG source.

  • Ligue 1: Achraf Hakimi sees red, Galtier fumes as Lorient stun PSG

Ligue 1: Achraf Hakimi sees red, Galtier fumes as Lorient stun PSG

Lorient shocked Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) with a 3-1 victory at the Parc des Princes after the Ligue 1 leaders were reduced to 10 men.

PSG were reduced when Achraf Hakimi was sent off early in the first half and they have now lost nine games in all competitions in this year.

They remain on 75 points from 33 games and they could see their Ligue 1 lead cut to five points if Olympique Marseille beat Auxerre later on Sunday.

    Lorient moved up to 10th.

Lorient took the lead in the 15th minute with some neat interplay on the right flank which stretched the PSG defence.

This allowed Romain Faivre to put the ball into the box where an unmarked Enzo Le Fee fired home.

PSG were down a man five minutes later when Hakimi received his second yellow card after a late challenge on Darline Yongwa.

Kylian Mbappe then equalised in bizarre circumstances following an error from goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo.

The Swiss goalkeeper recovered the ball and attempted to restart play by rolling it forward.

But Mbappe —- who was walking back right beside him —- took the ball and pushed into an empty net.

With the one man advantage, Lorient took the game to PSG with Le Fee and Faivre pulling the strings.

The second goal came when Faivre danced into the box and his deflected cross from the byline fell to Yongwa, who made it 2-1.

Amid jeers from the home fans, PSG huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser.

Sergio Ramos headed over from a Lionel Messi corner-kick, while Mvogo also saved a Danilo Pereira header with his face.

Bamba Dieng had a late goal ruled out for offside but he scored Lorient’s third a minute later to seal all three points.

That was when he went one-on-one with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who saved the first effort before Dieng bundled it home.

PSG’s Galtier slams “very stupid” Hakimi red card in loss to Lorient

Achraf Hakimi’s red card in the loss to Lorient by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was “very stupid”, club coach Christophe Galtier said, asking his side to be more ambitious.

The Ligue 1 champions slipped to a 3-1 defeat after they lost the defender inside the first 20 minutes to a second yellow card offence.

The loss leaves PSG still with an eight-point cushion at the summit, although it would be slashed to five if rivals Marseille were to win against Auxerre later on Sunday.

Reflecting on Hakimi’s red card, which came after poor challenges on Romain Faivre and Darlin Yongwa, Galtier professed his frustration with both the player and his side’s wider performance.

“[There is] no reason for Achraf to be tense and nervous,” he said. “The second card is very stupid. [There was] no sign this week that he would be tense.

“It’s a big disappointment, and we have to react quickly because we don’t know how many points we’re going to have. Our second half of the season [has been] very, very average.

“There needs to be a collective but also an individual awareness. Too many players are looking inward. We have to look ahead.

“The Troyes match is coming up. We’ve been first since the start of the championship, but we have to finish with victories. We have the ambition to do more.”
