Messi scores stunning free-kick to earn PSG win over Lille

Lionel Messi scored a stunning free-kick in added time to earn Paris St-Germain (PSG) a 4-3 comeback win over Lille on Sunday.

The result lifted them eight points clear at the top of the 2022/2023 French Ligue 1 standings.

Hosts PSG started strongly and Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a brilliant piece of individual skill.

He ghosted past two opponents and squeezed a shot under goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

Christophe Galtier’s side doubled their lead when Neymar tapped in a Vitinha cross.

But Lille were far from passive, as Bafode Diakite nodded home an Andre Gomes cross to pull one back in the 24th minute.

PSG suffered a blow early in the second half when forward Neymar was taken off on a stretcher with a suspected ankle injury.

Lille won a penalty kick after Marco Verratti tugged Tiago Djalo’s shirt and Jonathan David coolly converted the kick to level the scores.

Lille piled on the pressure and were rewarded when Gomes pinged a long ball into the feet of Jonathan Bamba.

He smashed his effort past Donnarumma to give his side the lead.

The visitors let their intensity drop, however, and they were punished when Mbappe turned in Juan Bernat’s cross to make it 3-3.

Then, Messi’s free-kick five minutes into stoppage time sealed a dramatic victory for PSG.

Brazil forward, Neymar gave PSG the lead inside nine minutes of the encounter.

However, Moffi leveled up for the home side eight minutes into the second half.

The mercurial striker in his usual style meandered through the PSG defense before slotting the ball with his left foot to equalize for Lorient.

But Danilo Pereiro scored the winner for the away team nine minutes from time to gift PSG the maximum three points in the encounter.

Moffi is now the third-highest goal scorer in the French Ligue 1 behind PSG’s Neymar and Mbappe both on eleven goals apiece.

Kylian Mbappe breaks silence on leaving PSG

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star, Kylian Mbappe has denied that he wants to quit the French giant in January.

The World Cup winner said he was surprised by the news.

“I never asked for my departure in January.

“The information that came out on the day of the [Champions League match against Benfica], I did not understand it. I am not involved in this information neither directly nor indirectly,” Mbappe told reporters after PSG’s 1-0 win over Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

It was claimed Mbappe felt ‘betrayed’ by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and wanted to leave the Ligue 1 champions as soon as possible.

“I was as shocked by this news as everyone else. People may think I’m involved, I’m not at all.

“I was taking a nap, my entourage was at my little brother’s game. We were stunned when we found out.

“Afterwards, we had to deal with it, we had a match to play. I just wanted to say that it’s completely false, I’m very happy here,” the 24-year-old added.

Classique: Neymar shines for PSG as Mbappe basks in transfer rumours

Neymar’s ninth goal of the season moved Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) three points clear at the Ligue 1 summit following a 1-0 victory over Marseille.

The Brazil international’s strike in first-half stoppage time was enough to settle the Classique as PSG registered 23 shots on goal in a deserved triumph at Parc des Princes.

Marseille had Samuel Gigot sent off for a dangerous challenge on Neymar as the visitors suffered their first away defeat of the season.

Meanwhile, Christophe Galtier’s side stretched their unbeaten league run to 20 matches.

It is their longest streak in the French top-flight since going 21 games without defeat between May 2018 and January 2019.

Marseille had Pau Lopez to thank for keeping PSG at bay early in the first half as he denied Lionel Messi twice inside the opening four minutes.

He also blocking Achraf Hakimi after Kylian Mbappe picked out the full-back less than 60 seconds later.

Lopez then demonstrated wonderful reflexes to tip over Mbappe’s deflected 25-yard effort, before Messi’s fierce free-kick rattled the crossbar.

But the hosts broke the deadlock just before the break.

Marco Verratti robbed Amine Harit of possession before Vitinha and Mbappe combined to set up Neymar, whose first-time shot went in off the post.

Marseille came close to equalising early in the second half, with Jonathan Clauss latching onto Alexis Sanchez’s lofted throughball before drawing smart reflexes out of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Verratti and Mbappe almost doubled the lead at the other end, but the visitors’ hopes of salvaging a point were effectively dashed 18 minutes from time.

This was when Gigot was shown a straight red card for rashly taking out Neymar.

Messi was marginally off target with an attempted dink from Mbappe’s throughball later on, but PSG held out to pull clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Mbappe slams transfer reports, insists he’s happy at PSG

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe has described reports he wants to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in January as “completely wrong”.

Mbappe, who played in PSG’s 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Marseille on Sunday, was said to have felt betrayed by the club hierarchy.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning 23-year-old signed a new contract in May, after months of uncertainty.

But he was reported to have become unsettled once more after a failure to meet his demands both tactically and in recruitment.

PSG football advisor Luis Campos emphatically denied those reports by claiming Mbappe had not informed the club of such intentions.

Head coach Galtier has also expressed confusion over the speculation.

The France international has now had his say on the reports, which came up just before PSG’s UEFA Champions League match against Benfica on Tuesday.

He is adamant the reports are not true.

“I’m very happy, I never asked to leave in January,” he said, while speaking with French media.

“The info came out on the day of the match, I didn’t understand. I’m not even remotely involved in this news. I was just as shocked as everyone else.

“People may think I’m involved, but I’m not involved at all, I was taking a nap.

“My entourage was at my little brother’s game. All the people who take care of me weren’t there. So, we were flabbergasted when we found out.

“Afterwards, we had to deal with it. There was a game to play. Just to say it’s completely wrong, and I’m very happy.”

Mbappe had been a target for Real Madrid before agreeing to prolong his stay in Paris.

He said: “I am a football player. The most important thing for me is to play and give my best on the pitch. If I start spreading myself too thin, I will get tired very quickly.

“When you play at PSG, you know what you’re getting into, what it’s going to involve in the good and in the bad. You have to be ready.

“Those who come here know, we warn them. We’re right in it at the moment, but we are focused on winning games and titles.”

Mbappe has started the season in prolific form in front of goal, scoring 12 goals in 14 games across all competitions for the French champions.

  • PSG names Galtier new coach as Pochettino departs

Christophe Galtier has been confirmed as the new Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) head coach after Mauricio Pochettino left the French Ligue 1 champions on Tuesday.

PSG won the league by a margin of 15 points in the 2021/2022 season, but Pochettino departed on Tuesday following his failure to deliver their first UEFA Champions League title.

Now, Galtier is the man who has been trusted to take over at PSG, strongly supported by new sporting director Luis Campos.

Campos and Galtier have worked together previously when they combined at Lille to create the team that pipped PSG to the Ligue 1 title by a point in 2020/2021.

Galtier left Lille days after they won that championship, joining Nice.

But he spent only a single season on the French Riviera — finishing fifth and reaching the Coupe de France final — before leaving late last month.

Nice have since brought back Lucien Favre as his replacement.

That move came as speculation persisted around Galtier’s move to PSG, with Pochettino’s exit anticipated since the end of last season.

Pochettino’s departure was confirmed just hours before Galtier appeared alongside PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi at a news conference.

Galtier will be tasked with finally ending PSG’s wait for UEFA Champions League glory.

Their latest failure in the competition came in a second-leg collapse against eventual winners Real Madrid in the last 16 state of the 2021/2022 competition.

Galtier becomes the club’s sixth coach since 2012.

RMC Sport claims sources at the Parc des Princes have refused to deny the reports.

Spain born coach Pochettino has a year left on his contract and the management of PSG is ready to pay him off by buying out the remaining months in his contract papers.

Pochettino was hired with the sole aim of winning the Champions League trophy but he hasn’t been able to do so. PSG crashed out in the quarter-final of the competition last season after losing to Real Madrid 3-2 on aggregate.

The outfit’s hierarchy have publically stated their desire to win the competition with Zidane having guided the Spanish giants to the title three seasons in a row.

At Madrid, the 1998 World Cup winner with France also lifted La Liga as well as the Copa del Rey twice.

Zidane was in Paris at the same time as the Emir of Qatar for last month’s Champions League final at the Stade de France, which was won by Real.

Earlier, PSG announced the arrival of Luis Campos as their football advisor to replace the departed Leonardo.

The 57-year-old Portuguese helped Monaco to the French crown in 2017 as well as Lille four years later and worked alongside Kylian Mbappe on the Mediterranean coast.

One of Campos’ tasks will be player signings with RMC Sport reporting free agent Paul Pogba is waiting for the official arrival of Zidane at PSG to start discussions about joining the side.

“I am delighted to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, which I consider is the most ambitious and exciting club in world football,” Campos said in a PSG statement.

“I believe strongly in and share the vision of the club and I cannot wait to get started to further unleash the great potential of this exceptional club.”
