  • Obasanjo adopts lion cub in Abeokuta, names it ‘Aremu’

Obasanjo adopts lion cub in Abeokuta, names it ‘Aremu’

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has adopted a newly born lion cub in a wildlife park located inside the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

The former Nigerian leader who is also a successful farmer christened the cub with his traditional name, Aremu.

Apart from adopting the cub, which is one of the three newly born cubs at the park, the former president also donated N1 million for animal’s upkeep.

Obasanjo disclosed this on Monday at the opening ceremony of the wildlife park and animal adoption event‎.

The former president who was represented‎ by the managing director, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, OOPL, Vitalis Ortese called on Nigerians to come to the aid of some of the endangered animal species.

He said the ”name adoption of the animals in the park was aimed at recruiting individual and corporate partners who will support the park in providing the financial resources for the preservation and care of animals that are on the brink of extinction as a result of increased human activities.”

Also speaking at the event, the deputy chief coordinator, OOPL, Ayodele Aderinwale, explained the essence of introducing the wildlife park into the Library project, adding that it had been a focal point of the project since inception.

The National President, National Association of Zoo And Parks, Morenikeji Olajumoke urged the government to brace up to the challenges facing wildlife in the country.

She noted that at present, some species face extinction adding that something urgent needed to be done to address the threat.

Among the animals that are fast facing extinction is the Pangolin otherwise known as bush meat (‘eran igbe’ in Yoruba parlance). Already in China, we cannot find it anymore and they are shifting attention to Africa, particularly in Nigeria,” Olajumoke said.

And this is an animal that eliminates about 70 million pests in our forest annually. So, if we do not quickly address this, the pest will be available to destroy our forest too,” she said.

Olajumoke lamented that notable parks like the one in Enugu State ”has been wiped out with the land sold to private developers for personal houses.”

But, the cheery news is that while government seem to be turning away from wildlife development, people like our Baba Obasanjo is looking into the direction.”

Olajumoke also appealed to the government to ensure the release of a park guard at Ogba Zoo and Nature Park in Benin, Edo State, Andy Ehanire, who has been abducted since September 24 by unknown gunmen. Three policemen were also killed in the attack.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that another‎ guest at the event, who identified himself as Prof. Afolabi also adopted another cub at the sum of N1 million.

  • Buhari speech: The roar of a lion – Shehu Sani

The senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has said President Muhammadu Buhari spoke the mind of Nigerians in his Monday’s broadcast.

Sani said on his Facebook page that President Buhari has demonstrated that he cherished the nation’s unity, peace and collective progress.

The senator said: “He spoke as a nationalist and spoke my mind a hundred percent. He sent a clear message to terrorists, ethnic irredentists, secessionists and champions of sectionalism that this union is an indissoluble matrimony in all circumstances.

“The President’s speech was a lion’s roar meant to reaffirm and reinforce the unity of a nation showing signs of disintegration during his absence.
“The President’s speech was a lion’s roar re-establishing full control of a staggering clime heading to an engineered implosion during his absence.

“The President’s speech was a lion’s roar meant to wake up a slumbering nation dangerously forgetting the lessons of its history and the calling of its future.

“The President’s speech was a lion’s roar meant to extinguish the Soviet/Yugoslavia inferno stoking in our country. During the President’s absence, our hard earned trophy of peace and plaque of unity were gathering dust and gradually being eaten by ants and bugs, the lion roared to clear them.

“Our dreams and vision for a better country can be achieved without the need to subscribe to disorder or surrender to it. The roaring lion may have disappointed ‘Biafranistas’ and ‘Restructuristas’ and ‘Evictionistas’ but it’s pleasing to ‘Nigerianistas.”

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that the secret police had attempted to arrest Suleman over his recent message asking his members to kill any Fulani herdsman found around him or the church.

Fani-Kayode’s remark also comes at a time when Fayose vowed to remain a thorn in the flesh of the All Progressives Congress, APC government.

Fayose had explained that he will continue to criticise the Buhari-led government because it has failed and Nigerians are tired.

The governor had said, “I will continue to leak their secrets. I will remain a thorn in their flesh. Anything they want to do, let them come. If they want to carry their police, let them carry their police. I don’t care.”
