Big Tent lists members of Campaign Council and other organs of Third Force

The Convener of the Big Tent coalition of political parties, social movements, civil society organization’s and candidate support groups which make up the Third Force for reclaiming Nigeria, Professor Pat Utomi, has announced the list of members of the Big Tent Campaign Council, the Policy Review and Future watch team, and the Deep Dive Committees that support each of the 37 shadow focal persons of the policy team.

Indicating that the bottom-up grassroots based structure, that begins at polling booth level, but has operational anchor at the ward level, is based on a structure model of an organic bulb with complex redundancy, he said the Big Tent was favoured with so many support groups that it was able to design in several layers of coordinated parallel streams to ensure people were mobilized with deep coverage to vote and their vote protected.

The activist and politician who is Chairman of NCFront and Convener of the New Fabian Society of the Concerned Professionals said that because the movement is not just about winning elections but also about establishing a new way of accountable people-centred government, a group for policy choices to create the appropriate basis for rational public conversations that will make public choice evidence based and people centred was imperative.

In a statement by Austin Kemie, Head, Big Tent Secretariat, Prof Utomi informed the support groups present that the Policy team currently provides advisory input to the Labour Party candidates, in addition to inputs to them by several other Big Tent Committees such as that for Manifesto and for strategy.

The noted Political Economist also said the Big Tent Think Tank of senior Economists, Consultants and Retired Leaders chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Ijewere with Committees headed by such other leaders like Emmanuel Ikhazoboh, Nuhu Yakubu and Dele Farotimi were also part of the structure.

Utomi also praised the work already done by the Policy Review team also known as the Shadow cabinet. The shadow team has such leaders as Dr Usman Bugaje for Education, Prof Osita Ogbu, Prof Murtala Sagagi, Dr Chris Asoluka and younger people like Salamatu Yaradua, Halima Dada-Ahmed, Gbenga Ajayi as well as Diaspora based members like the lead Health focal person, Dr. Loretta Ogboro Okor.

Among the focal persons in the 36-member team are Prof. Auwal Aliyu for science and technology; Dr. Muiz Banire for law and order; Hadjia Bilkisu Magoro; Ambassador Joe Keshi; as well as Professor Ademola Abass.

Prof Pat Utomi also named members of the Deep Dive groups which for Defence has Major General Henry Agboola as focal person in the shadow team. The Deep Dive group is a committee of 34 retired Generals and four persons retired from the intelligence agencies, Utomi explained. He pointed out that there are special Deep Dive groups on Maintenance Culture; Values and Ethics in government; and Youth Entrepreneurship; outside of traditional Ministerial departments. He said a special one on education will be headed by a person who is not typically an educator to show that the purpose is for education that serves the social and economic needs of society. He was pleased that Foluso Phillips founder of Phillips Consulting would be providing leadership there.

He said the state coordinators in the nearly 200 person Campaign Council include Coordinators for North Central Oliver Torbunde; for Yobe , ACG Abubakar Wakili; Imo, Dr. Fabian Ihekweme; Abia, Hon. Tony Enweruzo; Gombe, Mohammed Borse Kurno; Akwa Ibom, Dr. Citizen Ini-Ekpo; and Kaduna, Ma Cynthia Tolativ Batuta.

Prof. Utomi’s list of spokespersons include Rashida Abubakar for Sokoto; FCT, Paul Obih, who will also serve as Director of Media research for the Campaign Council; and Susan Essiet for Akwa Ibom.

A full list of all the positions in the campaign council, including the liaison officers for the NLC and TUC state political commissions, and Fire teams, Utomi said would be made available through the office of the Director of Communications for the Big Tent, Charles Odibo.

WAR: Russia draws list of unfriendly countries

Russia has added to the growing list of unfriendly countries towards it in the ongoing war with neighbour Ukraine.

European countries of Greece, Denmark, Slovenia, Croatia, and Slovakia, have been added to the list.

This develop[ment was made known by Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, in a decree obtained by cable television, CNN.

The decree said Russia considers nations that “commit unfriendly actions” against It as “unfriendly countries.”

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic and the United States of America are already on the list.

Countries in this list are limited in their ability to hire workers located in the territory of Russia for embassies, consulates, and representative offices of state bodies.

The decree on unfriendly countries was signed by President Vladimir Putin in April 2022 barely two months after the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops.

Greece has a limit of hiring 34 people, Denmark of 20, and Slovakia of 16, the decree added.

Slovenia and Croatia will not be able to hire employees for their diplomatic missions and consular offices, as was the case with the United States.

Recall that the crisis between Ukraine started in February 2022 and has now lasted for five months with both nations expected to ceasefire.

LPPC distances self from list of 2021 SANs in circulation

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) has distanced itself from reports that the list of successful candidates for the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) this year has been released.

The LPPC, in a statement on Wednesday by the Director (Press and Information), Supreme Court of Nigeria, Dr. Festus Akande said the process for the final selection was still on.

Akande said the LPPC would make public the final list through media advertisement, as it has always done.

The LPPC warned those peddling falsehood about its activities to desist, threatening to go after those behind the false information and subject them to the full weight of the law.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a story by an online medium that goes by the name, ‘loyalnigerianlawyer.com,’ with the above caption which is currently in circulation with a purported list of ‘successful candidates’ that emerged after the second filtration exercise by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC).

“We wish to state clearly that the above information is fake, unofficial and untrue. It’s a mere figment of the imagination of the authors who may ostensibly be on a mission to impugn and malign the reputation and integrity of the LPPC with a view to causing confusion and skepticism in the public space.

“The information should be discountenanced by whosoever might have come across it.

“For the umpteenth time, we wish to let the public know that any information, especially issues regarding the above topic can only emanate from the office of the LPPC Secretary/Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“Anything outside this official source should be disregarded. As has been the practice, all information concerning the LPPC, especially those bordering on the announcement of successful applicants for the award of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, are published in reputable national dailies and this year’s own will not be an exception.

“The perpetrators of such illegal act would be apprehended and given appropriate sanctions to serve as deterrent to others that might be waiting in the queue to do same in the future.

“The Committee may be forced to refer the conduct of such bloggers who are legal practitioners to the appropriate disciplinary committee of Body of Benchers. A word is enough for the wise.

“On this note, we wish to inform and assure our esteemed legal community and the general public that the authentic official list of the successful applicants that emerged from the second filtration exercise by the LPPC will be made public through advertorials in the national dailies in due course.”

  • AMCON set to release another debtors’ list

AMCON set to release another debtors’ list

Indications emerged on Tuesday that the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) is preparing to release another list of debtors.

The corporation’s Head of Corporate Communications Department, Jude Nwauzo confirmed the development.

According to information obtained, the corporation has decided to expose the debtors following their failure to meet their debt obligations after several peaceful engagements.

Nwauzo insisted that AMCON would be forced to charge the debtors to court if they failed to repay their loans.

Recall that AMCON had in October published a list of defaulters that it termed as delinquent debtors. They allegedly owe about N906.1bn.

The publication exposed 105 of its top debtors, pursuant to its statutory mandate and in compliance with the circular issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria in April 2015.

Part of the publication read, “This has become necessary as all avenues provided by the corporation for the debtors to propose acceptable resolution terms have failed. Nevertheless, the corporation is still open to an amicable resolution of these debts within a reasonable time, failing which it shall continue to exercise all powers as provided by law to recover the debts.”

Among the alleged debtors were Capital Oil & Gas Limited, whose main promoter was listed as Mr IfeanyiUbah , which reportedly owed N115bn; Tinapa Business Resort, which is owned by the Cross River State Government and allegedly owes N36bn; and Geometric Power Limited being promoted by a former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, which owes N29.84bn, among others.

Based on a court order, he added that it would also take over the assets of the debtors if they failed to repay their loans.

AMCON is saddled with the statutory responsibility, among others, of recovering the non-performing loans hitherto disbursed by eligible financial institutions (banks) to their customers.

The corporation had said that despite numerous overtures and appeals to AMCON debtors to extinguish their indebtedness, it was concerned that certain debtors had wilfully maintained recalcitrant postures while also adopting unscrupulous means of avoiding recovery.

After several appeals and dialogues to resolve this indebtedness, it added that it would not relent in pursuing vehemently the achievement of its recovery mandate against erring debtors.

AMCON has decided without further notice to publish in widely read daily newspapers specific and detailed list of all erring debtors, (and directors where applicable) that have failed and or refused to reach settlement resolution with the corporation,” it stated.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Why Adamawa PDP flag bearer, Umaru Fintiri’s name appeared on Buhari's travel ban list

Investigations by TNG has revealed why a former acting governor of Adamawa State and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s name appeared on President Muhammadu Buhari’s list of 50 high profile Nigerians banned from travelling outside the shores of the country.
Recall that the president last week Saturday issued the ban under Executive Order 6 (EO6).
The travel restriction followed the judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6).
The watch-list and restriction were put in place pending the conclusion of the cases against those affected.
    Why Fintiri made the list
Checks by TNG revealed that Fintiri who was also a former speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly has been in and out of the court for allegations bothering on fraud and bribery shortly after leaving office as acting governor in 2016.
However, like some other people on the list, Fintiri’s trial has spanned over two years with several adjournments and no judgement in sight.
Having emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa in a keenly contested election amongst other former governors in the state on October 1, Fintiri’s hope of becoming the next governor of Adamawa State may suffer serious setback with the ban.
    The Aisha Buhari’s connection
Recall that the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari also has a stake in the coming election in Adamawa.
Despite the fact that the incumbent governor, Bindo Jibrila is of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and also indicated interested in a second term ticket, the president’s wife is rooting for his immediate younger brother, Mahmud Halilu Ahmad as the party’s flag bearer in 2019.
Aisha Buhari in a straightforward statement shortly after the primaries which edged out his brother condemned the primaries while also indicting the party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole for presiding over such ‘impunity’. She also threatened to boycott party activities if the controversies which thrailed the APC primaries were not resolved before the deadline issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Aside the president’s wife, a former chairman of the EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu also expressed interest in the top Adamawa job. Ribadu, a former presidential aspirant also condemned the primaries which produced the incumbent governor Jibrin as its flag bearer and called for its immediate cancellation.
More so, both Aisha Buhari’s brother and Ribadu lost their chances as the APC Appeals Panel submitted its report to the National Secretariat on Thursday.
However, according to anonymous sources, Aisha’s brother may likely defect to the the PDP in a desperate attempt to achieve his governorship ambition. Since the party had already chosen Fintiri as its flag bearer, sources claim that concerted efforts were been made to ensure
his (Fintiri) disqualification to allow for a change of name of the party’s flag bearer with INEC. This was not difficult to achieve as Fintiri still has loads of pending corruption cases before the EFCC.
    Fintiri’s ‘sins’
Specifically, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/131/2016, alleged that the former governor had between October 2014 and August 2015, diverted public funds to the tune of N1.9billion.
The anti-graft agency also charged a firm that allegedly served as conduit pipe through which the fund was siphoned, Mayim Constructions & Properties Limited, as the 2nd defendant before the court.

EFCC alleged that Fintiri had at various dates, within the ten months the fraud was perpetrated, transferred funds from account number: 0313000301 domiciled at EcoBank Plc operated by Timeplex Nigeria Ltd, into account number: 5742019591 domiciled at the same bank but operated by the 2nd defendant.
Aside allegation that he used N220million to acquire a property at No 7 Gana Street, Maitama Abuja, Fintiri was said to have within three months he held sway as acting governor of Adamawa State, repaid a N550m loan he secured from Ecobank for the acquisition of a Tea plantation farm from Nigeria Agricultural bank in Taraba State.
EFCC said its investigations revealed that the bank had initially allowed the defendant to repay the loan within twelve months. It said that Fintiri attempted to disguise the origin of the funds which the agency described as “proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: bribery and corruption”.

The prosecution maintained that the defendant committed an offence contrary to sections 15(2) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended in 2012 and punishable under section 15(3) and (4) of the same Act. Count-five in the charge dated June 16 and signed by the Deputy Director, Legal & Prosecution Department of the EFCC, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, read: “That you, Ahmadu Umaru (Alias Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri) and Mayim Construction and Properties Ltd, between the 3rd of June 2014 an 4th of August 2015 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did retain in your US Dollars account number 5742019601 domicile at Ecobank Plc, the aggregate sum of $4, 830, 000.00 (US Dollar Four Million eight hundred and thirty thousand) which sum you know form part of proceeds of unlawful act to wit: corruption and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15(2) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended in 2012 and punishable under section 15(3) and (4) of the same Act”.
49 others affected by the ban
TNG reports that apart from Fintiri, others on the list include; ex-governors Saminu Turaki (Jigawa), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Adebayo Alao-Akala (Oyo), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Rasheed Ladoja (Oyo), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Attahiru Bafarawa (Sokoto), Muazu Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Gbenga Daniel (Ogun); and Ibrahim Shehu Shema (Katsina).
The ex-ministers are Nenadi Usman, Bashir Yuguda, Jumoke Akinjide; Bala Mohammed; Abba Moro and Femi Fani-Kayode.
    Others include a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh; ex- Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral A. D. Jibrin; a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar; a former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero; and a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu; Chairman Emeritus of AIT/ Raypower, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi; Waripamowei Dudafa (a former Special Assistant (Domestic) to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan); a former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezulike; a former judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia;
Also on the list are a former National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh; Chief Jide Omokore; Ricky Tarfa; and Dele Belgore (SAN).
Most of the affected persons are currently facing trial for alleged corrupt practices in different courts.
The list was generated from cases and proceedings filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police, and 17 other agencies.
The document indicated that many of those affected had earlier been placed on similar legal restrictions by the courts and security agencies including restriction of movement, seizure of passport, temporary forfeiture of assets, freezing of accounts and others.
Executive Order not witch hunt – Presidency
Reacting to condemnations that trailed the executive order, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity), Mallam Garba Shehu in a statement on Sunday said: “Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to implement the Order in full force.
“To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.
“Also, the financial transactions of these persons of interest are being monitored by the relevant agencies to ensure that the assets are not dissipated and such persons do not interfere with, nor howsoever corrupt the investigation and litigation processes.
“It is instructive to note that EO6 was specifically directed to relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that all assets within a minimum value of N50 million or equivalent, subject to investigation or litigation are protected from dissipation by employing all available lawful means, pending the final determination of any corruption-related matter.
“The Buhari administration reassures all well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians of its commitment to the fight against corruption, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the general principles of the Rule of Law.
“Accordingly, this administration will uphold the rule of law in all its actions and the right of citizens would be protected as guaranteed by the Constitution.
“We, therefore, enjoin all Nigerians to cooperate with the law enforcement authorities towards ensuring a successful implementation of the Executive Order 6 which is a paradigm-changing policy of the Federal Government in the fight against corruption.”

  • 2019: Only eight out of 91 political parties have submitted list of candidates – INEC

The Independent National Electorate Commission (INEC) said on Wednesday that only eight of the 91 registered political parties have submitted lists of their candidates for 2019 general elections as at the end of Tuesday.

The chairman of the commission Mahmood Yakubu, made this known while speaking at a quarterly dialogue session of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room session with INEC.

He said the commission expects a very busy time receiving submissions from the other 82 parties between Wednesday and Thursday as the deadline for this submission is October 18.

Section 31 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, states that every political party shall summit the list of their candidates not later than 60 days before the fixed date for a general election.

Mr Yakubu who expressed worry over the last minute rush by political parties to file their lists of candidates, said N189 billion was approved by the National Assembly for the 2019 general elections.

INEC is expected to publish the names and particulars of all nominated candidates at the constituency where they intend to contest the election within seven days of receipt of the list.

At the meeting, a representative of the Inspector General of Police, Kenneth Ebiripson, addressed the session of the Situation Room, detailing security plans for 2019 elections.

He said the police had mapped out three stages of intervention before, during and immediately after the 2019 polls.

He also said the security agencies had plans to deal with aggrieved persons who he described as bad losers and those that might want to cause trouble during and after the 2019 general elections.

  • Top list: YouTube unveils top 10 trending videos of 2017

The year 2017 is almost coming to an end and YouTube, in its yearly tradition, has released its top 10 list of trending videos along with the top 10 music videos that ruled the charts in the year.

The music videos list is topped, unsurprisingly, by Luis Fonsi’s Spanish song Despacito (featuring Daddy Yankee) that recently became the most watched video on YouTube raking in more than 4.4 billion views. It broke the record set three years ago by PSY’s Gangnam Style.

Other music videos in the top 10 list include Ed Sheeran’s popular song Shape Of You and That’s What I Like from Bruno Mars.

The interesting part about this year’s list is that 6 out of the 10 music videos are in Spanish, a feat that owes itself mostly to Despacito’s blockbuster success.

On the other hand, the top 10 trending videos of 2017 include a variety of genres like covers of Shape Of You, a ping pong trick shots video from the Dude Perfect channel, and Lady Gaga’s Pepsi Zero Sugar Super Bowl video from this year’s NFL finale.

Collectively, the 10 top viral YouTube videos have racked up more than 633 million views (83 million more than last year’s top 10 list) and have been watched for over 40 million hours.

The top trending videos are, in fact, not the most viewed videos for the calendar and are based on YouTube’s algorithm that takes into account a combination of factors including measuring users’ interactions (number of views, shares, comments, and likes).
