World Cup: London rail station renamed after Gareth Southgate

London’s transport bosses temporarily renamed an underground station in honour of England football team manager Gareth Southgate after the team flew home following their run to the last four of the World Cup.

England enjoyed their best World Cup performance in 28 years under Southgate’s leadership, reaching the semi-finals and narrowly missing a spot in the final, losing to Croatia after extra-time.
Southgate proved popular with England’s fans for helping create a renewed sense of optimism.

After the team returned home on Sunday, Transport for London rebranded Southgate underground station in North London as the “Gareth Southgate” station for 48 hours.

“We have to celebrate the achievement, it’s important,” said Patricia Gomez, 44, who travelled from Morden in south London on her day off on Monday to get a photograph with the new sign.

“(Gareth) was awesome, he gave the team motivation, he made them work as a family.”

After winning the tournament on Sunday, France also saw similar tributes on the Paris Metro, where six stops have been temporarily renamed.

Southgate’s popularity led many fans to copy his fashion style during matches of wearing a waistcoat as he watched from the dugout.

One retailer said sales of waistcoats had soared during the tournament while the day of the semi-final clash with Croatia was dubbed “Waistcoat Wednesday”.

“Maybe we’ll get a statue next,” said Steve Ingall from TfL.

  • Buhari never promised Nigerians not to receive treatment abroad – Presidency

Buhari never promised Nigerians not to receive treatment abroad – Presidency

The Presidency has refuted media reports that President Muhammadu Buhari promised Nigerians not to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Speaking on behalf of the presidency, Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, said the said the comments are false and are “a new dimension in the plot to diminish the stature of President Muhammadu Buhari before millions of Nigerians who love and adore their president”.

Recall that Buhari made the remark at Chatham House in London while speaking as a presidential candidate.

Buhari’s exact words at the time : “What is the difference between me and those who elected us to represent them, absolutely nothing. Why should Nigerian president not fly with other Nigerian public? Why do I need to embark on a foreign trip as a president with a huge crowd with public funds? Why do I need to go for a medical trip abroad if we cannot make our hospital (sic) functional?”

However, Adesina said Buhari’s words was twisted by critics.

He added: “First, it was a pernicious twisting and misinterpretation of the words of the president by mischievous elements, perhaps they can earn him opprobrium and infamy When they see that the gambit is not achieving the desired results, they have now gone into utter fabrication of apocryphal statements, which they purvey through the social media,” he said.

“Fortunately, the Chatham House lecture of 2015 is in the public domain. The concoction by haters and agents of disunity is not part of the text of the lecture at all.

“The morbid minds that created the falsehood simply want to de-market and demean the president, having seen that defeating him in a free and fair electoral contest is a tall order.

“Therefore, they desire to instigate the electorate against him by creating statements that never existed, and attributing such to him.”

The presidential spokesman, however, added that the “dubious” people will not succeed, as Buhari’s reputation “has been built over time, and sustained for decades.”

“That is why he is widely acclaimed for integrity, transparency, honour, and accountability, both home and abroad. Negative minds can never erode or corrode this,” he said.

  • Medical trip: We can’t guarantee Buhari’s return – Presidency

The Presidency has again spoken on President Muhammadu Buhari’s health in respect to his trip to the United Kingdom today to see his doctor.

Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina in an interview with Channels Tv said there is no cause for alarm as the president is just going for a medical review.

“Mr President is 100% healthy, there is no cause for alarm. He is going to London for medical review and would return on Saturday.

He, however stated that it is only God that can guarantee his return on Saturday.

“A man cannot guarantee anything in life, we cant guarantee the president’s return.

“In terms of his health, there is no cause for alarm. It is just a medical review. We all need that from time to time as there is nobody that is 100 healthy.

“It is only God that has the final authority on things but all things being equal, he would be back on Saturday,” he added

When asked on the nature of Buhari’s illness, Adesina declined giving details, adding that only the president can reveal that.

“The nature of his illness is private and personal. The fact that the man is a president does not deny his right and privileged to his private life

“Unless he comes out voluntarily and willingly to tell the country his ailment even his medical doctor does not have the right to disclose his ailment.

“He is the only one who has the authority to tell the country, it will be unethical for anyone to speak on it.”

  • BREAKING: Buhari embarks on four-day medical trip to London

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday embark on a four-day medical trip to the United Kingdom.

According to a statement on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President’s trip is at the instance of his doctor.

He said Buhari would return to the country on Saturday.

The statement read, “President Muhammadu Buhari will tomorrow(Tuesday) undertake a four-day trip to the United Kingdom.

“In the course of the technical stop-over for aircraft maintenance in London on his way back from Washington last week, the President had a meeting with his doctor.

“The doctor requested the President to return for a meeting which he agreed to do.

“President Buhari will return on Saturday, May 12th. ”

  • PDP pockets Buhari, presidency over ‘technical stopover’ in London

…says its a violation of Constitution

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari’s “technical stopover” in London without formal transmission to the National Assembly is an abuse of the constitution.

The party also advised the Presidency to reveal the real reasons for the president’s “technical stopover” in London.

Recall that the presidency while reacting to news that the president was on another medical trip to London after his visit to Donald Trump, said he (the president) only had a “technical stopover” in London and not on medical grounds as circulated in some quarters.

However, the party, in a statement by its publicity secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, said the presidency should end ‘official secrecy’ as the president is not a private citizen, therefore his activities must be fully disclosed.

Tthe President, who left Abuja on Saturday on an official working visit to the United States of America, on the invitation of President Donald Trump, left the US after the meeting on Tuesday morning.

Buhari was expected on Wednesday as the report released to announce his departure from Nigeria to the US didn’t state he would be stopping by in London. He however, arrived London Tuesday evening.

The party believes full information should be given especially as President Buhari’s foreign trips come at great costs with no gains to the country, citing the times when the president made negative statement about the country and its citizens.

The PDP invites Nigerians to note that President Buhari left the United States 48 hours ago and embarked on an unofficial visit to United Kingdom for undisclosed reasons without transmitting a letter to the National Assembly. This is impunity and another constitutional breach.

Indeed, Nigerians are worried about the signal being sent out by this penchant for secret itinerary, particularly, given the poor reputation and governance transparency issues confronting our nation under the Buhari administration.

The Presidency must understand that President Buhari is not a private citizen and as long as his upkeep and itinerary is sourced from our hard-earned resources, there must be full disclosure, as citizens deserve to know the purpose of the visit and the cost to our nation.

The party claims Mr Buhari admitted to the Voice of America (VOA) that he was unable to reach any agreement with President Donald Trump on any matter of interest to Nigeria during his US visit and that he has no future development agenda to validate his 2019 re-election bid.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the president however returned back to the country on Thursday night.

  • England’s FA in negotiations to sell famous Wembley Stadium

England’s Football Association is in negotiations to sell Wembley Stadium, the home of the national soccer team, to U.S. billionaire Shahid Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A spokesman for the FA confirmed on Thursday it had received an offer to buy the stadium and British media said the deal could be worth up to 1 billion pounds ($1.40 billion).

Under the plan, the FA would keep Wembley as the main venue for major matches, including England internationals and the FA Cup Final, but the national soccer team could play elsewhere in October and November due to clashes with the U.S. National Football League (NFL) season.

In a statement Khan said his bid was not a precursor to moving the Jaguars, who have played one home NFL game per season at Wembley since 2013, to London permanently.

“For the Jaguars, it would deliver another – and very significant – asset and local revenue source that would further strengthen our investment in London,” Khan who is also the owner of English second tier soccer team Fulham, said.

“Today’s news changes none of what we envision for the long-term promise for the Jaguars here in Jax, and it changes nothing as to the goals we have for your downtown.”

British media reported that Khan, who is worth $7.2 billion according to Forbes, is ready to pay more than 500 million pounds.

He would also allow the FA to keep the Club Wembley debenture and hospitality business that is valued at a further 300 million pounds.

The 90,000-seater stadium was rebuilt at a cost of 757 million pounds on the site of the original ground where England won the World Cup in 1966.

The new stadium opened in 2007 and the FA said last January it would repay its debt, which was reported by the Evening Standard to be 142 million pounds, by 2024.

The money from the sale of Wembley would allow the governing body to reinvest in the English game’s grassroots, particularly pitches, and stage more England games way from the capital, a plan to which it is already committed.

Alfie Crow, Jaguars fan and editor of Big Cat Country, a blog covering the Jaguars, downplayed suggestions that the deal could herald a permanent move to London for the NFL team.

“I think the signals of the Jaguars relocating to London are premature and very assumptive at this point,” he told Reuters.

“Khan has invested a lot in the areas around the NFL stadium in Jacksonville with plans to develop even more around it, so it would be millions of dollars down the drain if the ultimate plan was simply to rip the team away as all of that comes to fruition. For now, I view it as just a value investment with a lot of potential return for Khan.”

“So, I felt I should break the ice. We have many things to focus on, like security, agriculture, economy, anti-corruption, and many others.

“We needed to concentrate on them, and politics should not be a distraction.
