  • Visit to London: Buhari violated Nigeria’s constitution – PDP

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to the United Kingdom has created power vacuum in Nigeria.

It has, therefore, called on the National Assembly to address it.

According to the PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the president did not transmit a letter to the National Assembly indicating that he would be away on a week vacation.

The party said Buhari’s action was a violation of Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

“Nigeria is at the moment, bereft of statutory leadership, including the apparatus of security command, particularly as president Buhari had not indicated a date of return to the country,” the party said in a statement.

”The PDP, and, of course, Nigerians at large, are particularly worried that, in the event of any national emergency, there is no sitting commander-in-chief to take charge. It is incontrovertible that president Buhari is on a private trip to the UK, as he was not received on arrival by the government of that country; has not had any contact with the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, or any high officials of the UK government and has not conducted any official business since his arrival to that country, on Monday.”

The Presidency had announced that Buhari would be holding a series of meetings with some individuals before participating in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings scheduled for April 18-20.

  • Agents of looters organised protest against Buhari in London – Presidency

A group of Nigerians resident in the UK on Tuesday staged a protest against President Muhammadu Buhari.

The protest took place at the Abuja House official residence of the Nigerian president in London.

The protest came 24 hours after Mr. Buhari declared his intention to contest for another term in office as president of Nigeria in 2019.

The presidency, however, said the protest was sponsored by supporters of alleged looters and corrupt elements within and outside the country.

Sources in the presidency told State newsmen on Tuesday night that the alleged looters and corrupt elements had rented motley crowd of professional demonstrators to protest against President Buhari on his arrival to London.

The sources said: “Barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari declared his intention to contest for another term in office as President of Nigeria, the camps of alleged looters and corrupt elements within and outside the country have been jolted.

“This has forced them to push panic buttons including renting a motley crowd of professional demonstrators to protest against the President on his arrival into the United Kingdom.”

According to the impeccable sources in Aso Villa and Britain, extremely corrupt Nigerians who are custodians of slush funds stolen from Nigeria, and hiding in UK or are resident cronies of such elements, have colluded to form a league of protesters.

The sources maintained that the protesters’ singular aim was to distract and disorganise the scheduled state visit of the President to England,.

President Buhari is billed to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Theresa May and other dignitaries.

“Esteemed Nigerians home and abroad, friends and business investors in Nigeria, should please see through the veil of the motive behind the Abuja House, Kensington London demonstration.

“It was an orchestrated act of desperation and a ploy to blackmail and hoodwink the President from concentrating on his anti-corruption campaign , which is fast gaining grounds locally and internationally,” our source stated authoritatively.

The source added that, “this unpatriotic act is not unconnected to the Federal government policies to name and shame corrupt citizens and looters; to collate database of Nigerians with homes in UK who are not paying the right taxes, and the hot drive to prosecute all financial defaulters through bilateral and multilateral means.”

A public affairs analyst who preferred anonymity also said “the protest was benchmarked on an assemblage of local grievances and national challenges which the government is already tackling head on.

”Such as the herdsmen versus agrarian farmers clashes, fuel scarcity which no longer exists and trumped up charge of hunger in the land at a time when prices of food items are beginning to drop and inflation on the decrease.”

His view was buttressed by our Presidency sources who further repeated the position of the President who famously said that “corruption is endemic and Nigerians need to kill it before it kills Nigerians.”

According to the source, it is obvious that this is a clear cut incident of corruption fighting back.

The source believed that many of the beneficiaries of corruption and slush funds could not withstand another devastating blow of Buhari’s anti corruption sledge hammer.

”Hence, they are resolute to derail the apple cart in order to save their ugly faces and sit back to enjoy the loot in their personal banks.

”Some of the protesters are not even Nigerians but hired hatchet men paid to do the dirty job.

”According to security sources, the protesters are said to be bent on embarrassing and humiliating the President throughout his stay in the UK.

”An insider vowed that they will take their demonstrations to the venue of CHOGM holding later in the month in Britain, which President Buhari is attending as a Commonwealth Head of State,” the source revealed

When contacted, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said while reacting to the London protest that the President would not be distracted from his mission in the UK.

Sad: Nigerian teen stabbed to death in London

An 18-year-old Nigerian, Israel Ogunsola, was stabbed to death on Wednesday night in Hackney, London.

Ogunsola is said to have approached Police with his knife wounds shortly before 8 pm on Wednesday, following the attack, SkyNews states.

Officers rushed to his aid in Link Street, in the east London borough.

Paramedics and staff from the London Air Ambulance attempted to save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene less than half an hour later.

This is coming shortly after the son of a Nigerian lawmaker, 26-year-old Abraham Badru, was shot dead in the same area in London.

Two 17-year-olds have been arrested on suspicion of murdering Ogunsola, the Metropolitan Police said. They were held on Wednesday night.

The teenager’s father, Dele Ogunsola, who lives in the nearby Jack Dunning Estate, confirmed on Thursday afternoon that his son had died.

The deceased, who was studying computer programming, was described by his dad as “academically brilliant.”

The father of London’s latest knife crime victim today demanded that the “bloodshed must stop,” saying that his son was just cycling to meet friends when he was stabbed to death last night.

Ogunsola, 55, a customer services administrator, said: “My son was a well brought up boy who respected everyone and was liked by all and sundry.

“The bloodshed must stop. London’s streets are so dangerous. Young people are being slaughtered every day.

“If it means bringing back more stop-and-search, then so be it. We have to tackle this problem and the government needs to do more.”

  • PDP tackles Buhari over ‘private visit’ to UK

    …demands detailed explanation

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the presidency for not disclosing details of President Muhammadu Buhari travel plans to the United Kingdom.

The party noted that the president is not a private citizen and details of his travels usually sponsored with the tax payers money must be known to Nigerians.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Wednesday, the party accused the presidency of always shrouding issues around president Buhari in secrecy.

Consequently, the opposition party demanded full disclosure of the purpose of Buhari’s trip, his direct destination, the duration of the trip, as well as the cost and source of the funding.

Recall that President Buhari is billed to commence his annual leave on Monday, April 9.

The opposition party added that it has nothing against the president embarking on any trip, but that the citizens deserve to know the purpose of the visit and how much it would cost the country.

According to the PDP, president Buhari is not a private citizen and, as such, cannot embark on private trips, wrapped in secrecy, especially as the nation is responsible for his upkeep.

We know that Mr. President is billed to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to take place between April 16 and 20, but, Nigerians are wondering why he is taking off to an undisclosed destination in London, two clear weeks ahead.

We ask; is president Buhari and his handlers hiding anything from Nigerians so much so that they cannot disclose the reason and duration of the so-called private visit? Nigerians are invited to note that this secret visit has a departure date but silent on the purpose, date and place of arrival.

Today, our economy is hemorrhaging and the citizens are languishing because of the continued lack of accountability and total incompetence of the Buhari-led administration.

The PDP insists that public officers, at all levels, particularly the occupier of the office of the president, must be accountable, transparent and answerable in all their dealings, at all times, especially under an administration that claims zero tolerance for corruption,” the party said.

  • FG seeks forfeiture of Ekweremadu’s 22 properties in Abuja, Dubai, London, US, others

The Federal Government has applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja for an order of temporary forfeiture of about 22 properties allegedly owned by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in Abuja, London, the United States and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In the ex-parte application filed on yesterday by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIPRPP), Ekweremadu is accused of breaching the Code of Conduct for public officers by allegedly failing to declare about 22 properties in his last assets declaration form.

The application filed pursuant to Sections 330 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act; 8 of the Recovery of Public Property (Special Provisions) Act and Section 44 (2)(k) of the Constitution, seeks mainly an order for interim forfeiture of the properties to the Federal Government.

The ex-parte application was filed for the SPIPRPP by Festus Keyamo (SAN). It prays the court for an order “temporarily attaching/forfeiting the properties listed in Schedule B hereunder to the Federal Government of Nigeria, pending the conclusion of further inquiry/investigation by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property and/or possible arraignment of the respondent (Ekeremadu)”.

The grounds relied on by the applicant include that the properties listed in Schedule A hereunder were the properties declared by the Respondent in his Assets Declaration Form at the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

It stated that investigation/inquiries have revealed that the properties listed in Schedule B also belong to the respondent and so belonged to him when he declared his assets in Schedule A.

The applicant added that the properties listed in Schedule B were not declared in Ekweremadu’s assets declaration form. It added that preliminary investigation by the applicant reveals that a prima facie case of a breach of code of conduct for public officers had been made out against the respondent.

But Ekweremadu, in a statement, defended his integrity.

According to him, there is no asset to forfeit to the government.

He said the filing of a motion for the recovery of his assets was part of the politics of the 2019 general election.

He said in the statement by his Media Adviser Uche Anichukwu: “The attention of the Office of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been drawn to a motion ex-parte filed by Festus Keyamo Chambers on behalf of the so-called Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property for an order to temporarily forfeit assets it claimed the senator did not declare with the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB.

Senator Ekweremadu, however, wishes to state unequivocally that he declared all his assets with the Code of Conduct Bureau as required by law.

The so-called panel sought and obtained his Assets Declaration Forms, but could not look at them since it is clearly out on a vendetta and smear campaign championed by Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla.

This is clearly part of the politics of 2019, and is further exposing those who colluded with the dismissed former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezulike and his cronies to steal and doctor his will.

The Senator has, nevertheless, briefed his lawyers and will meet the panel in court.

Again, Senator Ekweremadu wishes to assure all his supporters and well-wishers that there is nothing to worry about. “Like others, this too shall pass.”

Court sentences London mosque attacker to 43-years in prison

A London Woolwich Crown Court, on Friday, sentenced Darren Osborne to 43 years in prison for driving a van into pedestrians near a mosque in north London’s Finsbury Park.

Osborne,48, killed a 51-year-old man Makram Ali and injured nine others in the late-night attack in June 2017.

Osborne, from the Welsh capital of Cardiff, was convicted of terrorism-related murder and attempted murder, despite his denial of the charges.

He drove into a crowd of worshippers in a van outside a mosque in the Finsbury Park area of London in June 19, 2017.

The judge referred to his defence, that a man called Dave, was in fact driving the van, as “pathetic”.

Osborne, from Cardiff, became radicalised over four weeks in 2017 after watching a television programme about a child sex ring scandal involving a gang of mainly Muslim men in northern England.

Prosecutors said they were “clear throughout that this was a terrorist attack”.

Unemployed “loner” Osborne had pleaded not guilty, telling London’s Woolwich Crown Court that a man called “Dave” was driving at the time.

However, witnesses recalled Osborne saying: “I’ve done my job, you can kill me now” and “at least I had a proper go” to members of the public in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

The jury of eight women and four men took one hour to convict the father-of-four.
