My meeting with Buhari was very good one – Osinbajo

Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday said his meeting with ailing President Muhammadu Buhari in London was a very good one.

“Osinbajo now back in Abuja from London & will be presiding over FEC (Federal Executive Committee) this morning,” tweeted Laolu Akande.

He also pledged to share “more information” about Osinbajo’s encounter with Buhari, describing it as “a very good meeting”.

Osinbajo, who has been acting president since Buhari left for medical treatment on May 7, flew to London on Tuesday.

No details were given about the meeting but it is believed to be the first face-to-face encounter between Nigeria’s two most senior politicians in more than two months.

Buhari, 74, has not been seen in that time and has now spent nearly four months of this year out of the country, prompting growing calls for clarity about his fitness to govern.

His condition has not been disclosed but aides have previously played down rumours that he was terminally ill with cancer or even dead.

His wife Aisha, who flew to London earlier this month, on Monday posted a cryptic message on her Facebook page in response to a Nigerian senator’s description of Buhari as “the absent Lion King”.

“God has answered the prayers of the weaker Animals. The Hyena’s and the Jackals will soon be sent out of the kingdom,” she wrote.

  • Maitama Sule: Buhari writes Ganduje from London, commiserates with Kano

Maitama Sule: Buhari writes Ganduje from London, commiserates with Kano

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a personal letter of condolence to the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, in which he expressed profound shock over the death of elder statesman, Yusuf Maitama Sule, the presidency said Monday night.

The letter, said to have been personally signed by the President, also described the death of Mr. Sule as a “heavy loss.”

It will be delivered by the federal government delegation to the burial as constituted by the Acting President, a statement by Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, said.

    The President’s letter reads thus:

I have heard this morning, the death of the venerable Alhaji Maitama Sule, Dan Masanin Kano, and one of Nigeria’s famous sons. Although, I knew he was in poor health for some time, his death nonetheless, came as a profound shock.

As a Minister in the First Republic, he was one of those who assisted our Founding Fathers, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello and Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, to fashion Nigeria politically and lay the grounds of national co-existence.

Maitama Sule was blessed by God with a wonderful voice and outstanding eloquence. He served with distinction in the First Republic, the Second Military regime, as well as the Second Republic, without him being tainted with the remotest hint of scandal.

As a person, I found him personable with unceasing good humour. Nothing personified his faith more than the fact that on losing his sight, he did not retreat in himself sulking on account of his ill-fortune. Quite to the contrary, he honoured virtually all invitations extended to him and spoke as usual with singular eloquence and unparalleled wit.

In my discussions with him, I greatly valued his counsel, and I never ceased to be amazed by his concern for the well-being of his country rather than his personal interests.

Let me extend my sincere condolences to Your Excellency, family and friends, the Government and people of Kano, and Nigerians as a whole, for this most heavy loss. We shall not soon see the like of him. May God forgive his sins and admit him to Paradise, Amin.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the two-time minister and former Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, died in the early hours of Monday (today) at 88.

  • Again! Aisha travels to London to see ‘sick Buhari’

Despite assuring Nigerians that her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari will soon return to Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, has again, on Sunday, left Nigeria for London in the United Kingdom, to see ‘sick Buhari, who has been receiving medical attention in the British capital since May 7.

Mrs. Buhari had, on May 30, travelled to London to join her husband, three weeks after he embarked on his latest medical vacation. She returned to the country in the early hours of June 6 after spending one week in London. She had said the President would soon return to join Nigerians as, according to her, he was recuperating fast.

During her last visit, she said the President would soon return to join Nigerians as, according to her, he was recuperating fast.

According to a statement by the Director of Information to the Wife of the President, Suleiman Haruna, on Sunday, the President’s wife would use the opportunity of her latest visit to convey the best wishes of Nigerians and their prayers to her husband.

Mrs. Buhari’s stopover in Addis Abba will afford her the opportunity to attend a meeting of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS which will hold on Monday (today).

The statement read, “Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, left for London, the United Kingdom, on Sunday, July 2, 2017, to visit her husband who is on medical vacation.

“She will convey to the President the best wishes of Nigerians and their fervent prayers for his quick recovery.

  • Why Presidential Jet, NAF 001 remains with Buhari in London – Presidency

The Presidency has explained why the Presidential Aircraft, NAF 001 is still with President Muhammadu Buhari in London where is currently receiving treatments despite having gone for over 50days.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, said such criticisms were mostly informed by lack of understanding of protocol around foreign trips by Heads of State all over the world.

According to the presidential aide, for reasons of protocol, national security, diplomacy and prestige, there is no world leader who travels abroad and is left without plans for immediate return or possible evacuation.

He also dismissed as false and totally untrue the claims about outrageous fees allegedly being paid by Nigeria for the retention of the aircraft in London.

“From operational point of view, this country’s Armed Forces as represented by the Nigeria Air Force are not to abandon their Commander-In-Chief in whichever circumstance he is. This is a standard operating procedure.

“We have also read claims about outrageous fees allegedly being paid by Nigeria. The published amounts are totally untrue.

“Aircraft conveying heads of states all over the world usually enjoy waivers even where payments for parking are differentiated by aircraft categories.

“We have been assured that where the waiver is not granted, payment will not exceed 1,000 pounds, which is a quarter of the amount being peddled.’’

“For the avoidance of doubt, this President is not the first to have a presidential aircraft standing by for him, as he will certainly not be the last.

“All past heads of this country have had this privilege, and the part that surprises the most is that leaders who in the past travelled with three Nigerian aircraft did not suffer this trenchant criticism.’’

Shehu, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to ignore opposition campaign aimed at derailing the Buhari administration’s “big plans for the country’’.

“This is a government that is constructing the Second Niger Bridge, the Mambila Power Plant, the East-West and the North-South standard gauge railway lines.

“We are a government that has saved this country an annual loss of two trillion naira from fraudulent petroleum subsidy schemes by influential citizens and their children.’’

Shehu also disclosed that the government had successfully purged the public service of about 50,000 ghost workers, adding “the Buhari administration certainly deserves a chance’’.

  • Buhari’s health has worsened, he is now on life support – Fayose alleges

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose on Wednesday revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari has been on life-support for the past 20 days, stressing that the presidency must tell Nigerians the truth always.

Fayose who made the allegation through his Special Assistant on New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka said Buhari does not only have voice impairment but also has been on life-support since June 6, 2017.

The statement reads, “it makes 53 days since our President; Muhammadu Buhari left Nigeria to attend to his health challenges abroad. No official information as to his whereabouts and his state of health.

Like every other Nigerians, I do not wish the president dead, I have therefore maintained dignified silence since we were told that the President embarked on his second medical trip abroad this year.

However, the recorded audio message which was released by the Presidency as the President’s Ramadan message to Nigerians necessitated my setting the records straight today.

No doubt, the audio message was only a damage-control strategy aimed at further deceiving Nigerians.

I have therefore elected in good conscience to state as follows:

That the audio message does not represent the truth as our President does not only have voice impairment, he has been on life-support since June 6, 2017 at a West-End, London Hospital.

Of a fact, our First Lady, Her Excellency, Mrs Aisha Buhari was not allowed to see her husband during her last visit to the United Kingdom if only she will be courageous enough to admit.

Only three Nigerians who are of the President’s cabal are allowed access to the President. I will keep their identities for now.

Anyone with the contrary claim should produce the President to Nigerians within the next 48 hours.

It is obvious that Nigeria is drifting like the last days of the Yar’Adua’s government.

Nigerians will recall that I warned against electing President Buhari on the account of his age, health and mental capacity.

Nigerians will also recall that when they released pictures to the press claiming that President Buhari had an interview with Kemi Fadojutimi of “All Eyes on Africa” TV Show in London, on Monday, February 23, 2015, I proved to the whole world that the interview was conducted in suite 881 at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

Hate me or like me, again I am putting Nigerians on notice on the present state of health of our president.

In closing, let me state that I am not unaware of the various attempts on my life; I am undaunted as I remain committed to truth and fearlessness because a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

Dear Nigerians, even though President Buhari needs our prayers and we should keep praying that God takes total control of his situation, it is equally imperative that our leaders must tell us the truth at all times.

It is time that the President takes the interests of Nigerians above his own and resign from office so that our country can move forward. The fate of Nigeria and its people must not remain in the hands of the Presidency cabal, our country must be set free.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, attempts made by TheNewsGuru.com to reach Buhari’s spokespersons, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu proved abortive.

  • Facebook launches anti-extremism UK training program

Facebook is launching a program in the UK to train and fund local organizations to combat extremist material online, as internet companies attempt to clamp down on hate speech and violent content on their services.

Facebook, which outlined new efforts to remove extremist and terrorism content from its social media platform last week, will launch the Online Civil Courage Initiative in the UK on Friday, the company said in a statement.

The new initiative will train non-governmental organizations to help them monitor and respond to extremist content and create a dedicated support desk so they can communicate directly with Facebook, the company said.

“There is no place for hate or violence on Facebook,” said Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer. “We use technology like AI to find and remove terrorist propaganda, and we have teams of counterterrorism experts and reviewers around the world working to keep extremist content off our platform.”

The British government has stepped up attacks on Silicon Valley internet companies for not acting quickly enough to take down extremist online propaganda and fostering “safe places” where extremists can breed following a string of attacks in recent months in London and Manchester.

Facebook, Alphabet’s Google, and Twitter have responded by saying they have made heavy investments and employed thousands of people to take down hate speech and violent content over the past two years. Security analysts say the efforts have dramatically reduced the use of these platforms for jihadist recruitment efforts, although more work needs to be done.

Prime Minister Theresa May has sought to enlist British public opinion to force the U.S. internet players to work more closely with the government rather than proposing new legislation or policies to assert greater control over the web.

Earlier this week, May urged fellow European Union leaders at a meeting in Brussels to join her in putting pressure on tech companies to ‘rid terrorist material from the internet in all our languages’.

She called for the internet companies to shift from reactively removing content when they are notified of it, toward greater use of automatic detection and removal tools – and ultimately preventing it from appearing on their platforms in the first place.

  • Court sends Grenfell Tower fire victim’s ‘brother’ to jail

Posting horrifying pictures of a Grenfell Tower victim on Facebook has landed a man in jail in Britain.

Omega Mwaikambo, 43, was sentenced to three months at Westminster Magistrates’ Court after he admitted to posting the pictures, The Independent reported.

According to the Scotland Yard, Mwaikambo was found guilty of malicious communications offences.

Mwaikambo was arrested after images were posted online of what appeared to be a partially covered body following the blaze in North Kensington, west London.

He pleaded guilty to two counts under the Communications Act.

He received six weeks in prison for each count, to run consecutively, making a total of 12 weeks (three months), the Scotland Yard said.

While the body of the man in the photographs is yet to be identified formally, one man told BBC News he believed the photo showed his brother, Mohammed, who was confirmed dead.

“This morning we saw a picture of his body on social media and the police didn’t know anything about this.

“This picture shouldn’t have been released on social media.

“The police are saying they couldn’t tell us anything until they have more information,” he was quoted as saying.

At least 58 people are missing and presumed dead in the Grenfell Tower disaster.
