ADC are deceiving us, I still want Obi to return to LP – Datti Baba-Ahmed

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that the African Democratic Congress-led coalition of opposition is a form of deception.

Baba-Ahmed disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.

When asked about his position on the ADC coalition, he said, “They are deceiving us.”

Baba-Ahmed distanced himself from the group, insisting that he remained a Labour Party member.

“I am a Labour Party man, for God’s sake. I am Peter Obi’s man. I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest in 2027,” he said.

Speaking on the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 polls, Baba-Ahmed stated that there was a need for credibility and competence in the commission.

He accused the current leadership of subverting the constitution during the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, electoral fraud is the root of Nigeria’s national crises.

“Not somebody who clearly read what the constitution provides—25 per cent in at least two-thirds of states of the Federation and the FCT—but went ahead to breach it and put Nigeria in what it is today.

“The electoral fraud is right now the single most important fact to be addressed in our life as a nation, even beyond insecurity. Insecurity is derived from electoral fraud. Corruption is aggravated by the kind of electoral fraud that we have,” he stated.

By-elections: Abure-led LP slams Obi for backing ADC

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has labelled the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as an “Uber” politician.

In a statement personally signed on Friday, Abure accused Obi of elevating subterfuge to an art in politics and of recently “crying wolf where there is none.”

He further alleged that Obi has effectively booked himself a spot in the Guinness Book of Records for maintaining affiliations with multiple political parties simultaneously — all in what he described as a desperate bid to preside over Nigeria.

“It is unfortunate that Obi has turned himself to an irony and a paradox in the Nigeria political space.

“He has turned himself into “Uber” politician, not willing to take a position and stand by his decision,” he said

Recall that Obi urged his supporters to back African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidates in the forthcoming by-elections across several states in the country.

The protesters who are said to be members of various civil society groups carried banners and placards with such inscriptions : “INEC, who is using you against LP,” “Mahmood stop destroying democracy in Nigeria”, “Tell INEC to obey court orders”, among other unprintable graffiti.

The protesters reportedly gathered for the peaceful protest as early as 11:00 am today Wednesday,. August 6,2025

  • Leadership is not measured by prolonged rule – Obi replies critics

Leadership is not measured by prolonged rule – Obi replies critics

The former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Elections, Peter Obi has said that great leadership is not measured by length of years in office but by the quality and impact of services offered to the people.

Obi said this on Sunday in Awka in a statement issued to journalists.

The former Anambra governor said that if elected the president of the nation, that his longstanding pledge to serve only one term of four years would be eventful.

Obi declared that the vow was “sacrosanct,” reiterating his commitment to purposeful leadership over prolonged rule.

He cited  global figures such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, who proved the possibility of great leadership in a single tenure.

Obi noted that great leadership was not measured by the number of years in office, but by the quality and impact of service.

“Mandela served one term and walked away. That was leadership.

“Power must serve the people, not the self.” he said.

Obi acknowledged the widespread scepticism among Nigerians towards political promises, noting that public trust had eroded over decades of unfulfilled pledges.

“I am fully aware that the decay in our society has made trust one of the scarcest and most sceptically viewed commodities,” he said.

Obi  addressed recent jibes aimed at his vow, as some critics suggested that even a shrine-bound oath would not earn him public belief.

While another implied that anyone insisting on a single term should undergo psychiatric evaluation which Obi dismissed both remarks.

He stated  that such cynicism reflected a political culture where broken promises were the norm.

“They judge me by their own standards, “but Peter Obi is not cut out  from that cloth,” Obi maintained.

He noted that his political record in Anambra State, showed that he fulfilled his  campaign promises on education, healthcare, rural infrastructure, and financial prudence.

“I did not swear by a shrine, nor have I been certified mentally unstable as a result of honouring my word.

“I maintain without equivocation: if elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office,” Obi declared.

According to him, 48 months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference.

Obi outlined his priority areas as president to include rebuilding trust in public institutions, tackling insecurity through the efficient deployment of national resources, revamping the education and healthcare sectors.

He said that his interest in catalysing small businesses to drive economic productivity, and combating corruption with unwavering resolve remained unbeatable.

The former Anambra governor stated that his goal was to transform Nigeria from “a consuming nation into a productive one,” anchored on agriculture, technology, and manufacturing.

“Service should be impactful, not eternal,” noting that the challenges facing Nigeria demanded urgency, not tenure elongation.

  • Not true Obi betrayed Nenadi Usman – Obidient Movement

Not true Obi betrayed Nenadi Usman – Obidient Movement

The Obidient Movement has said that there is no friction between the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi and the acting National Chairman of the party, Sen. Nenadi Usman.

National Coordinator of Obidient Movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko, in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, described the rumours as baseless.

According to Tanko, Obi remains a committed and loyal member of the Usman-led Labour Party ‘because that’s the right and reasonable place to be after the Supreme Court upheld her appeal on the crisis in the party’.

“His Excellency, Peter Obi, has consistently affirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party, under the leadership of Sen. Nenadi Usman.

“He has also clearly stated his support for all individuals who had previously secured the party’s ticket to contest political positions.

“The rumour that Peter Obi has betrayed Sen. Nenadi Usman is entirely baseless,” he said, describing what he called the false narrative being peddled by opposition elements as a distraction.

The national coordinator said that the  speculation began after Obi attended the campaign flag-off of the Labour Party governorship candidate, Dr George Moghalu, in Anambra last weekend.

“Sen. Nenadi Usman, along with other key stakeholders in this movement, are fully aware of and support the recent developments.

“Let’s not forget that Mr Peter Obi is a man of integrity, known for keeping his word. His decision to support Dr George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Anambra, reflects that consistency.

“So far, the only individuals who have spoken on these matters are senators, members of the House of Representatives, state assembly members and I. This marks a clear departure from the old political order,” he said.

Tanko, therefore, urged members of the public to disregard the speculation and treat it as mere propaganda, built on falsehood and aimed at stirring unnecessary controversy.

“Our focus remains on one goal: building a strong movement, a united Labour Party and a better Nigeria. That, we shall achieve,” he said.

  • 2027: Abure’s camp willing to give Obi LP presidential candidate slot

2027: Abure’s camp willing to give Obi LP presidential candidate slot

The Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party says it is excited with the prospect of having the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, run again on the party’s platform in 2027.

The LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, disclosed this in an interview with journalists.

He spoke on the backdrop of Obi’s declaration at the weekend that he intends to pursue his 2027 presidential ambition on the LP platform

The LP is currently factionalised, with Obi and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, backing Nenadi Usman to oust Abure from the party’s leadership position.

A recent Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership tussle did little to clarify or resolve the question of who the legitimate leader is.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission affirmed the candidate put forward by the Abure camp for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.

In spite of the leadership tussle, Obi declared he remained in the LP and would run for president on the party’s platform in 2027.

Asked for Abure’s reaction to Obi’s declaration, Ifoh said, “We are excited about the news. If we have waited all these while for two years with all the things that happened, we can still wait for tomorrow and the next, for the whole thing to crystallise. Then we can now begin to talk about the way forward.

“Let me start by saying politics is all about interest. The interest of every Nigerian, including the Labour Party, is to have a government that can help Nigerians come out of the doldrums and not enter into more crises, whether political, social or economic.

“I believe there are so many Nigerians who have that capacity and who can also help Nigeria come out. In 2023, we gave Peter Obi the ticket and he didn’t disappoint. Rather, the system disappointed them.”

When asked if Obi had reached out to Abure, Ifoh said the channel of communication between the duo was open.

According to him, the former Anambra governor still frequently has discussions with Abure despite the cold war between both parties.

“Well, as I said elsewhere, the line of communication is not completely blocked. There are talks, though not formal. But before the 2027 poll, don’t forget that we have Anambra elections a few months from now.

“Obi is from Anambra and we expect him to play a key role in making sure that the Labour Party wins the state. So, there has been rapprochement here and there. I think at the right time, the parties will meet and thrash all the differences. From there, we’ll move on.

“If he so wishes, as he said, that he will run the next election under the Labour Party, I think it’s a good thing for us in the party. It’s a win-win situation for everyone and we wait to see how we act the talk,” he added.

Obi’s declaration however seems to be having a ripple effect in the camp of the opposition coalition championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

When contacted for a reaction, a key stakeholder of the coalition and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal expressed surprise at Obi’s statement.

“I don’t know what is in his mind. You need to ask Obi himself when you see him.

“I just read it today too that he will be contesting in LP,” he stated.

The development comes in the wake of Obi’s assurance to his supporters that he will contest the 2027 presidential election in the Labour Party.

Obi made this known while addressing some of his supporters in a viral video circulating on social media on Saturday.

Asked which party he intends to contest in the 2027 elections, Obi said, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”

The former governor also blamed the crisis in political parties on the Nigerian government.

He said, “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere.

“We had a problem in our party before, in the past. Yar’Adua was the President. I went to him then; he called the INEC chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him I don’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.

“But today, in all the parties, there are problems; these are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity.

“Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”

Obi charged Nigerians to take responsibility for ensuring that their votes count because even if agents are paid by political parties to look after their interests, the ultimate decision about whether the people’s votes count rests with voters.

The former governor also appealed to Nigerian youths and the electorate not to be discouraged because positive change will also be resisted by those who are beneficiaries of the old order.

The ex-presidential candidate also stated that there should be a retirement age for politicians seeking public office.

Obi said that by the time the 2027 election holds, he would be 65 years old, adding that he would not want to be contesting for elections in his 70s.

Rep. Sunday Umeha (LP-Enugu), has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umeha, who represents Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency, announced his defection during a political rally of the APC at Ibagwa Aka Community in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State on Saturday.

Speaking at the rally, Umeha said that his defection had become imperative owing to the protracted crises rocking LP at both the national and state levels.

According to him, the crises have made it impossible for him to effectively represent his constituents.

The lawmaker also said his decision to join the ruling APC was sequel to the need to connect to the centre and bring our people closer to power.

“There are a lot of advantages in plugging to the centre,” he remarked.

Umeha said that the APC had served the interest of Igbos better than the PDP at the federal level.

He cited the reconstruction of the Enugu-Onitsha and Enugu-Port-Harcourt Dual Carriageways as some of the landmark projects the current ruling party had done in Igbo land.

With the latest development, APC now has an elected official in Enugu State for the first time since the party’s formation over 10 years ago.

  • Resolve the small party crisis you have – Akpabio tells Peter Obi

Resolve the small party crisis you have – Akpabio tells Peter Obi

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday, urged Peter Obi, the former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), to put his house in order and not make unnecessary comments on past leaders of the country.

Akpabio stated this during a valedictory session held in honour of the late leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Pa Edwin Clark.

He was also reacting to a comment Obi made at an event saying that the efforts of Nigeria’s past leaders were in vain.

“Those who are aspiring as presidential candidates to cause division with their mouths using the social media, tell them to resolve the small party crisis they have before they come to talk about the larger Nigeria.

“I am saying this because I understand that just yesterday, one of the presidential aspirants, Peter Obi, said that the labours of our leaders who have passed on were in vain.

“They were not in vain. The mere fact that Nigeria is still standing together shows clearly that their labours were not in vain.

“Very few countries with the size of Nigeria are still together; today, many have been fragmented.

“Edwin Clark lived through the days of the USSR. Nigeria in spite our difficulties, God has kept us together because of the voices of people like Pa Edwin clark. So clearly, his labour and labours were not in vain.

“And for those in the social media, Nigeria has an unregulated social media system so let them wallow in it and then take this situation and propagate all sorts of falsehood and all sorts of narratives.

“Some of them on social media were not even born when Pa Clark was very active in service and so they couldn’t have known some of the things he did that we are remembering today.

“And yet when somebody makes a statement that the labour of our past leaders are in vain, I beg to disagree”.

Akpabio added that let Obi show leadership, like Edwin Clark did by resolving first, the crisis in the Labour Party.

“He has one of the the smallest parties in Nigeria and you cannot even resolve the crisis in that Labour Party”.
