48hrs to Lagos guber poll: Confusion as Awamaridi claims he’s LP rightful candidate

Barely 48hours to Lagos guber election, Mr Ifagbemi Awamaridi, a former candidate of the Labour Party in Lagos State,  says he still remains the candidate of the party in the March 18 Gubernatorial Election.

Awamaridi, who was also the National Coordinator, Labour Party Concerned Stakeholders, made the disclosure in Lagos on Thursday at a news briefing to round off his electioneering campaign.

Awamaridi said that he never withdrew from the governorship race as claimed by some National leaders of the party.

He said that he was the party’s bonafide flagbearer in Lagos state,  haven emerged winner in the state primary election in July 2022.

He said that his name was forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the party leadership.

“In July 2022, INEC published the name of Labour party candidate and the name is Prof. Ifagbemi Awamaridi based on the fact that I won the primaries.

“The party forwarded the name to INEC around July 5 and INEC published the name around July 25 and that name subsists.

“Later on, I discovered that the name has changed and some party leaders decided to organise a substitution primary and claimed that I have withdrawn,” he alleged.

Awamaridi said he had replied INEC that he had not withdrawn from the race, adding that a candidate could only withdraw on a signed Letter of Oath or Form 11B of INEC.

He said that the party was trying to change a lot of things in the country and INEC irregularities would not be excluded.

He alleged that the party had issues of forged documents in  22 states, including Edo and Ebonyi, in connivance with some INEC officials.

He, therefore, urged the Nigeria Police to look into the issue of forged documents by some national officers and charge them to court.

According to Awamaridi, the matter of his candidacy is before the Supreme Court.

However, the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of Labour Party, Mrs Dayo Ekong, has refuted claims that Awamaridi was the party’s candidate for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

Ekong told newsmen that Awamaridi was being used by the opposition party to cause confusion in Labour party.

2023: Confusion trails LP’s endorsement of Makinde

…as LP guber candidate insists he is still flag bearer

Confusion has trailed the purported endorsement of Governor Seyi Makinde by the Labour Party for reelection in Oyo State.

Reports have it that the Chairman of the Labour Party in the state, Mr. Sadiq Atayese, endorsed Makinde during a news conference at the party office, Molete, Ibadan on Sunday.

He said Makinde was endorsed due to the similarity of ideology, competence, compassion for the masses and numerous achievements of the governor in many sectors.

He said Makinde was endorsed due to the similarity of ideology, competence, compassion for the masses and numerous achievements of the governor in many sectors.

The result of the presidential election in Oyo State is similar to that. While the result of the election in its entirety is still a subject of contention, the takehome of the election is that a third force party that emerged barely a year ago has grown to become a strong force because of the quality of its candidate.

“Having considered this, in the upcoming election in our dear state, we have decided to support a candidate with the character, competence, and capacity to lead and who is also concerned about the wellbeing of the citizens as it is obvious that no party can win the governorship election alone.

“However, the main priority should be that the citizens win through the emergence of a candidate that best serves their interest.”
Based on this, we have decided to work with the party whose candidate aligns with ours in terms of security, agricultural development, and financial well-being. And it is obvious that the current administration of Seyi Makinde has done this.

“And we hereby call on all citizens of Oyo State to vote for him. This decision was taken with serious consideration for the party’s future in the state.”

He added that the party structure in the state remained intact as its Assembly candidates across the state were still in the race.

When contacted, the governorship candidate of the LP in the state, Tawfiq Akinwale, said he remained the candidate of party.

Also, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Akin Akinwale, in a reaction on Twitter said it was the “hungry faction” of the LP that endorsed Makinde.

“After all my uncle did for your party in Oyo State. Anyways, it is the hungry faction of Oyo LP that endorsed Seyi Makinde,” he tweeted.

Labour Party adopts Makinde as Oyo guber candidate

Labour Party (LP) in Oyo State on Sunday in Ibadan adopted Gov. Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its candidate for the March 11 governorship election.

LP chairman, Mr. Sadiq Atayese, told a news conference that the state’s Working Committee of the party believed in the emergence of Makinde, a candidate with character, competence, and capacity in the interest of the citizens.

He said, however, that the electorate should vote for LP candidates at the state assembly elections.

“Going by the results of the Feb. 25 presidential election and political realities in our state, it is obvious that no individual party can win the coming gubernatorial election single-handedly.

“The main priority should be to ensure that citizens win through the election of a candidate that best serves their collective interests.

“Against this backdrop, the right thing now is for parties and their candidates to form alliances with candidates of like ideology,’’ he said.

According to Atayese, LP in Oyo State has decided to work with the candidate whose ideology tallies with its own in terms of security of lives and property, infrastructural development, food security, education, and human capital development.

“It is of note that the present PDP administration under Gov. Makinde has presented its scorecard from the health sector with the provisions of Primary Healthcare Centres in every ward to security and others.

“There is no doubt that his governance ideas in the establishment of Park Management System which other state now emulate has made him to be a leader with uncommon innovation.

“From our evaluation as a party, Makinde has done well and we know that continuous development of a state is a function of stability in governance,’’ he said.

Atayese stressed that there had been meaningful development in Oyo State in the last four years; hence, it was only logical that the good work should continue.

“We have the responsibility to maintain the nobility of our heritage and we the citizens have to stand by it.

“We took a thorough assessment of the various governorship candidates for the March 11 election in terms of character, competence, capacity and compassion for the people.

“Gov. Makinde excelled the others; therefore, LP in Oyo state has decided to use its structure throughout the 33 local government areas to support his re-election for another four years of giant development,’’ Atayese stressed.

Nigeria Decides: ADC distances self from LP, PDP over fight with INEC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reached out to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party to stop linking it in their fight with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Recall that agents of the LP and PDP staged a walk out of the collation center after accusing the electoral body of unfairness with the counting process.

.The leaders of the two parties including the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, also called for the suspension of the collation of results and the resignation of the INEC boss, Mahmoud Yakubu.

But the ADC, in a statement signed by its Board of Trustees Chairperson, Patricia Akwashiki, said the party has never been part of the fight.

It also asked the two parties to delist its name from those partaking in the fight against INEC.

“They demanded that the INEC Chairman step down from his position and that fresh elections should be conducted,” she said.

According to Mrs Akwashiki, the former ADC party chairman doesn’t have the right to decide the future of the party since he is no longer its leader.

“This is not the position of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Ralph Nwosu who is the immediate past Chairman of the ADC does not speak for the ADC and cannot speak for the ADC.

“We cannot be a party to any action that will undermine the integrity of INEC or lead to a breakdown of law and order. When the final results are announced by INEC, we will have an informed reaction. The ADC will not be a party to any attempt to truncate the ongoing electoral process. All parties to this process must remain law abiding and remember that the Electoral Act clearly spells out guidelines for redress,” she added.

  • Election fallout: APC-PCC raises alarm over alleged plot by LP, PDP to halt announcement of results

Election fallout: APC-PCC raises alarm over alleged plot by LP, PDP to halt announcement of results

Nigeria’s new watchdog, APC-PCC has raised alarm the two major opposition political parties in Nigeria, LP and PDP are shopping for court orders to stop INEC from announcing the collation of results by INEC and lead Nigeria into crisis.

This was contained in a statement signed by the APC -PCC spokesperson, Festus Keyamo, SAN stating that:

“We have it on good authority that the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party have perfected plans to finally scuttle our democracy and throw the country into constitutional crises by surreptitiously obtaining exparte court orders stopping the announcement of the Presidential Election results which they fear have gone against them.

“The walk-out they staged today at the National Collation Center is just a precursor to executing the plan.

“Nigerians would recall that the June 12, 1993 debacle that brought Nigeria to its knees and caused our country international isolation was precipitated by a court injunction stopping the announcement of Presidential Election results.

“The court order was obtained by a certain Association for Better Nigeria headed then by one Chief Authur Nzeribe. This is exactly what Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Peter Obi want to foist on this nation again because of their inordinate ambitions. This is not surprising because both candidates where nowhere to be seen when ASIWAJU was fighting for the democracy we all enjoy today.

“However, we wish to draw the attention of Nigerians, the Judiciary, and the world to the provisions of section 84 (15) of the Electoral Act which prohibits the grant of injunctions to the stop the holding of elections (which includes the declaration of results). The section states:

‘Nothing in this section shall empower the courts to stop the holding of primaries or general elections under this Act pending the determination of a suit.’

“This has prompted their instructions to their campaign organizations, especially their spokespersons to continue to issue statements, making false claims of ‘victory’ when there is no single scientific basis for such claims.

” For instance, as outlandish as some of their claims of manipulation are, they have not pointed at one single presidential election result in any single unit in the whole country where they scored a particular figure with a result sheet duly signed by their agent that was subsequently changed at a Collation Centre.

“All we hear are sound bites of their spokespersons, huffing and puffing about winning the election just to whip up public sentiments to prepare the ground to reject the results when they are eventually released by INEC.

“For us our position is very simple and straight forward: we wish to allow the legal process of declaring presidential election results to take place peacefully and in an orderly fashion. ASIWAJU is not desperate, but is very confident of victory.

“We therefore wish to advice anyone who wishes to aid and encourage these candidates along this infamous part to remember the June 12 debacle. They may also wish to learn a lesson or two from President Muhammadu Buhari who resorted to the court of law in 2003, 2007 and 2011 when same PDP ‘defeated’ him in those presidential elections in controversial circumstances. President Buhari, as a true statesman and democrat, never resorted to underhand tactics to declare himself President.
