LP condemns INEC’s omission of party on ballot papers in Lagos

The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State on Thursday condemned INEC for omitting the party’s logo in the Senatorial and House of Representatives ballot papers ahead of Saturday’s General Elections.

INEC on Wednesday took delivery of sensitive materials for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections scheduled for Saturday.

Pastor Dayo Ekong, the LP Chairperson in Lagos State, at a news conference in Ikeja, called in INEC to reschedule the election until the party’s candidates were included on the ballots.

According to her, as Nigerians prepare to go to the polls on Saturday to elect a new President and members of the Senate and House of Representatives, the LP is decrying the flagrant exclusion of the Labour Party National Assembly candidates on the ballot papers.

Ekong called out INEC to either correct what she described as an anomaly or reschedule the National Assembly elections.

“This malicious “error” was found out this morning in Lagos, by me and my team of executive members during the routine inspection of election materials.

“It was at inspection that it was discovered that Labour Party was not listed for the election for Senate in and House of Representatives in Lagos State. This is unacceptable and a wicked way of disenfranchising Lagos electorates.

“It is unimaginable that for the elections slated for Saturday, Feb. 25, Lagos electorate will only vote for the Labour Party Presidential Candidate as INEC made no provision for the election of Party’s Senate and House of Representatives Candidates.

“We cannot accept this as we do not believe that INEC made a mistake but rather, a deliberate, malicious and intentional act by INEC at disenfranchising our Supporters from exercising their civic rights which is unacceptable,” Ekong said.

She added that  further checks on the INEC website revealed that the list of names of Lagos Labour Party National Assembly was not uploaded “even as the list and court orders for same were duly submitted to INEC and acknowledged.”

“You will all recall how we have severally pointed out the bias displayed by the current INEC REC in Lagos State towards our Party and his increasing attacks on our leaders that have constantly pointed out these biases in the past and current onslaught on our Party.

” Is this the result of the culmination of those attacks?

“We call on all Stakeholders, Foreign Observers, Lovers of Democracy and International Community to quickly wade in and call INEC to order to do the needful,” Ekong said.

The event was attended by the Governorship Candidate of the party, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, other candidates and the state executive committee members.

LP’s governorship candidate directs supporters to vote for Tinubu

Governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Adamawa, Alhaji Umar Madawaki, on Thursday in Yola directed his supporters to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the presidential election.

Madawaki told a news conference that he had adopted the APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the candidate of choice on Saturday

He said the LP had completely side-lined him and other party candidates in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.

“We have been deliberately disrespected by the party structure at the national and state levels.

“It is in light of this that we entered into discussions with the APC and after exhaustive negotiations, we have resolved to collapse our entire structure for the APC and particularly, for the presidential election.

“I therefore call on all my supporters to go to the polls on Saturday and overwhelmingly vote Sen. Bola Tinubu as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ Madawaki told newsmen.

He added, however, that on March 11, voters should cast their votes for him as governor.

“My commitment is to run an administration that will embrace everyone regardless of ethnicity, location and religion.

“I will work committedly to build a state that is strong, rich and safe for everyone,’’ he stressed.

  • 2023: ‘No alert has been received’ – LP State chairmen cry out hours to election

2023: ‘No alert has been received’ – LP State chairmen cry out hours to election

State chairmen of the Labour Party (LP) have cried out over neglect in the running of campaigns and mobilisation activities in the party.

They have declared that the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi cannot win the presidential election on Saturday as the chairmen are yet to receive money for mobilisation.

Alleging neglect by Obi, they said the former Anambra Governor has failed to recognise the important role of the 36 state chapters’ leadership but choose to work with cronies and support groups.

The Gombe State LP chairman and co-ordinating chairman for the 36 States, Sani Abdulsalam, told reporters in Abuja that such tendencies could affect the party’s performance at the polls.

He was accompanied by the national vice chairman (North East), Mohammed Alkali and the Yobe State chairman, Ibrahim Bukar, amongst others.

Abdulsalam said: “I speak on behalf of 36 state Chairmen of our party in my capacity as the Coordinating Chairman.

“We have never been respected by the party leadership and also our presidential candidate has no respect for our party executives at state levels because Peter Obi deliberately mismanaged our goodwill with the imposition of his members and other support groups that decamped with him in May 2022 to our party.

“Of note, Wednesday, February 22, 2023, was the meeting we had with the National Chairman in the party head office where a discussion was held about the logistics support for state chapters and National officers towards effective Mobilisation of our members for the presidential and National Assembly election on Saturday, February 25, 2023

“To our surprise, the National Chairman said the Presidential candidate has no confidence in all the 36 state chapters’ leadership but would rather choose to work with their cronies and support group that came with him.

“The greatest shock from the National Chairman was that money for agents will not be sent to any State Chairman or National officers except those three NWC members including a woman and that all state Chairmen and 19 other members already picked by Mr. Peter Obi himself will be given monies meant for party agents and an alert will be received by 10 pm tonight Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

“As of now, no alert has been received by any State Chairmen and information reaching us confirmed that money was paid based on ethnic and religious consideration because only persons of a particular ethnic group currently run the campaign of Mr Peter Obi in cohort with the National Chairman, has polluted the party.

“As members of the Labour Party National Executive and National Working Committee, it is our considered opinion and informed conclusion that Peter Obi cannot win this election since all party executives have been sidelined. He is not ready and is grossly ill-prepared for the Presidential race.”

Court of Appeal affirms Umeh as LP candidate for Anambra Central

The Court of Appeal, Awka has affirmed Sen. Victor Umeh as the candidate of the Labour Party for Anambra Central Senatorial District of Anambra.

The Court in its judgment held that the suit which supposedly disqualified Umeh at the Federal High Court, Awka was statute barred and lacked locus.

Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, who read the judgment via zoom allowed the two appeals by the Labour Party and  Umeh to stand.

Umeh was dragged to a federal high court by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Mrs Uche Ekwunife, the senatorial candidate of the PDP on the grounds that he did not resign from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, before picking the ticket on LP.

The court presided over by Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa in a judgment on Jan. 27 granted the prayer and disqualified Umeh.

The LP and Umeh through their counsel, Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN, and Patrick Ikwetoh respectively appealed the judgment for lack of locus by the respondents and prayed the court to set aside the judgement.

Reacting to the judgment, Chief Beluolisa Nwofor, SAN, counsel to Ekwunife said he will appeal the  judgment.

PDP, LP lose scores of members to APC in FCT

Barely 48 hours to the Presidential and National Assembly elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have lost scores of members to APC in the FCT.

According to reports, the defectors were received into the fold of APC on Wednesday in Abuja.

Dr. Hawa Iyatu-Bagu, the National Coordinator, National Mass Movement for Better Orientation (NAMMBO), a frontline Tinubu support group, said the development was an indication of APC’s victory in the Feb. 25 elections.

Iyatu-Bagu said that the organisation had been in touch with the defectors for a very long time, saying ” today those that accepted the truth have decided to follow the winning team.

She said: “We have been going round canvassing for votes and most of them here are only the leaders, because if all of them will be here, this place cannot contain them.

”So, we now ask their leaders and some of them to come here and make it public about their decision to dump PDP and LP and declare their readiness to vote for Tinubu and Shettima.

“With this development and what we have seen so far in the course of our campaigns across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria, Nigerians, especially the women are ready to vote for the duo.”

The coordinator also stated that the youths were ready to ensure the landslide victory of Tinubu, assuring the defectors of equal treatment.

According to her, the APC presidential candidate will reciprocate any gesture to be done to him with quality leadership.

Also speaking, the Deputy National Coordinator of NAMMBO, Ibrahim Umar, lauded the Tinubu support group for attracting the defectotrs into the fold of APC.

Umar, who said that the chances of Tinubu of winning the presidential election were very bright, saying that Nigerians were eager to vote for Tinubu and Shettima.

Earlier, Mr. Titus Musa, former PDP Youth Leader in Gwarinpa Ward, Abuja Municipal Area Council, who led defectors said they decided to defect to APC to vote Tinubu.

He said: ”This is due to his record of excellent service in Lagos and his contributions to national development.

”We are convinced with APC manifesto titled, the Message of Hope. APC is the way to go and Tinubu has something to offer Nigeria.

“We have seen the light in Tinubu and we are ready to join hands with him to move our country to the desired level and I believe the way Tinubu transformed Lagos if given the mandate, he will do a lot for the country.

” Therefore, we decide to defect from PDP to APC together with our teeming supporters compromising youths and women.”

On her part, the former Labour Party Women leader in Gwarinpa Ward, Ms Zipporah Bitrus, said that they left LP to APC as Tinubu and Shettima were the best for the country.

” Tinubu is a person that is always concerned about the uplifting the ordinary citizens. He had mentored many Nigerians and that is why we see reasons we pitched our tent with APC.

The high point of the event was the presentation of the APC flags to the defectors symbolising their formal integration into the party’s larger family.

  • Endorsement of Peter Obi sacrosanct, says PANDEF

Endorsement of Peter Obi sacrosanct, says PANDEF

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) says the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, is sacrosanct.

The National Publicity Secretary of the forum, Ken Robinson, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Abuja and made available to newsmen on Monday.

The National Leader of PANDEF and elder statesman, Edwin Clark, had in January endorsed Obi and the affirmation by the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) on Feb. 2.

The statement reads: “The attention of PANDEF has been drawn to certain gibberish in the media, regarding the forum’s endorsement of Obi, credited to a purported Youth Wing of the forum.

“PANDEF urges the public to disregard the reported rejection of Obi’s endorsement by the so-called youths.

“It is borne out of infantile musings.

“In the first place, PANDEF does not have “wings”.

“The forum maintains a consolidated framework at the national, state, and local government levels.

The statement adds: “For the avoidance of doubt, PANDEF stands by the endorsement of Obi by our national leader, Clark, and the affirmation by SMBLF.

“Without equivocation, PANDEF’s endorsement of Obi is sacrosanct.

“PANDEF will not be distracted by the misdemeanor but would instead intensify efforts to ensure Obi’s victory in the Niger Delta region.

“The forum cautions youths in the region not to succumb to the antics of greedy politicians and shun all acts of violence before, during, and after the forthcoming elections.”
