Labour Party has proven to be worse than APC – Valentine Ozigbo

Valentine Ozigbo, a governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, has said that the Labour Party (LP) has turned out to be even worse than the ruling party APC.

Speaking in a recent interview with journalists in Lagos, Ozigbo expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the Labour Party, saying many members were leaving due to internal issues. He had resigned from LP in February and joined the APC to pursue his gubernatorial ambition.

However, in April, he lost the APC primary to Nicholas Ukachukwu, who secured 1,455 votes. Ozigbo, who was previously the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2021 Anambra governorship election, has since filed a legal challenge against the APC primary results.

Justifying his defection, he said: “The Labour Party I was in turned out to be worse than APC. I couldn’t remain there and still criticize the APC—I chose instead to join a party that, while imperfect, has the potential for positive change.”

He acknowledged that some people misunderstood or criticized his move, but emphasized that his motivation was rooted in the desire to contribute to national development and to meet the expectations of the people of Anambra.

Ozigbo said his legal action is aimed at addressing irregularities in the APC primary and possibly securing the party’s ticket. He believes the APC can be transformed and accepted in Anambra if it fields credible candidates.

“People may dislike the APC, but that doesn’t mean it can’t change. I want to be the person who helps make APC a party that Anambra people can believe in,” he said.

  • 2027: LP opposed to coalition, sets up disciplinary committee to tame Otti, others

2027: LP opposed to coalition, sets up disciplinary committee to tame Otti, others

The Labour Party (LP) says it will not enter into any coalition or alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was part of a 12-point resolution adopted at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the party held on Friday in Abuja.

Reading the communiqué, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr Julius Abure, declared that the party would not participate in any coalition arrangement for 2027.

“The Labour Party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 general election.

“Instead, we will focus on rebuilding, repositioning, re-strategising, reconciling, and expanding our membership base to win the 2027 elections,” Abure said.

He expressed skepticism about ongoing coalition talks in the political space, arguing that those spearheading such initiatives lacked the capacity and character to build viable alliances.

“People who cannot unite their own parties cannot lead a national coalition.

“Forming a new party where stakeholders are expected to surrender their identity and structure requires strong leadership, which is currently lacking,” he added.

He said NEC also reviewed what it described as anti-party activities by Gov. Alex Otti of Abia, and other members.

According to him, it consequently established a disciplinary committee to investigate and make recommendations within two weeks.

Abure said the decision followed Otti’s public remarks on national television, which he claimed disparaged LP.

The disciplinary committee members include: Dr Ayo Olorunfemi, Chairman; Alhaji Umar Farouk, Secretary; while Mr Kehinde Edun, Mrs Dudu Manuga, and Mr Callistus Ihejiagwa, are members.

On Anambra 2025 governorship, Abure  confirmed that Chief George Moghalu had emerged as the party’s, following the primaries held on April 5 in Awka.

“NEC congratulates Chief George Moghalu and rallies all members and Ndi Anambra to support him in the Nov. 8 governorship election for a greater Anambra State,” he stated.

Responding to concerns about Moghalu’s recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abure said the LP was now using more scientific and structured approaches to candidate screening and selection.

“We’re committed to fielding candidates who will respect the party’s constitution and uphold its values.

“We are taking steps to avoid a repeat of situations like the one we are currently managing in Abia,” he said.

  • LP Publicity Secretary defect to PDP

LP Publicity Secretary defect to PDP

Mr Titus Odo, the Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State on Wednesday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Odo defected to the PDP alongside the former Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs in the state, Prince Emeka Mamah, who was the State Coordinator of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign in the 2023 Presidential election.

NAN recalls that the duo dumped the PDP during the 2023 general elections for the LP.

Receiving the defectors at the party’s State Secretariat, the state PDP Chairman, Dr Martin Chukwunwike, expressed happiness over their decision to return to their former party.

He explained that state Governor, Mr Peter Mbah gave them directive to do everything possible to bring back aggrieved party members who left the party for one reason or the other.

“We are happy to have them in our midst and God has set this party on a good foot as 2027 is already assured,” he said.

The PDP chairman, however, called for unity within the party to package themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during their presentation to the party state chairman, Odo expressed joy to return to his former party, revealing that Mbah’s massive development in the state informed his decision.

“I am happy to tell you that I am back to my home. I came back because of the giant developmental strides of Gov Mbah and I say kudos to him.

“The second reason is the defection of my immediate boss, the LP Governorship candidate for the 2023 election in Enugu State, Dr Chijioke Edeoga.

“Another reason is that the Council Chairman in Igboeze North, Mr Uchenna Ogara is turning the Council Area into a township,” he said.

On his part, Mamah also thanked the PDP leadership in Igboeze North, Enugu North senatorial zone and the State chapter of the party for receiving him back to the party.

He extolled Mbah for extending hands of fellowship to those that had left the party, saying, “Personally, I am pleased with the performances of our governor”.

  • LP disowns Datti Baba-Ahmed’s statement on Tinubu

LP disowns Datti Baba-Ahmed’s statement on Tinubu

The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has condemned a statement by the former vice presidential candidate in the 2023  General Elections, Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed, who said President Bola Tinubu’s government is ‘questionably constitutional’.

The rebuttal, signed by the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Dr Arabambi Abayomi, was issued to newsmen on Saturday in Kaduna by the party’s National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim.

Abayomi said the LP viewed the comment as undemocratic, therefore, dissociating itself from any surreptitious action capable of inciting Nigerians against the present government.

He said said the party approached the 2023 General Elections with all the determination to make difference in the way Nigeria was run.

The scribe also recalled that the party had sponsored candidates it believed at the time had the capacity to win  elections.

He also recalled that the result of the 2023 presidential election declared didn’t go its way and the party challenged the result up to the Supreme Court and lost.

“For the interest and peace of the nation, the Labour Party accepted the judgment of the Supreme Court.

“This was not because we were pleased but because of the finality of the Supreme Court’s judgment. The party has since moved on,”he said.

Abayomi lamented that the party was astonished by the illegal and unconstitutional meeting called by Gov. Alex Otti of Abia and Peter Obi, on April 9 in Abuja.

He said that at the meeting,  Baba-Ahmed still referred to the 2023 presidential election as ‘questionably constitutional’ even with the legitimacy conferred on the Tinubu’s government by the Supreme Court.

Abayomi also alleged that Baba-Ahmed, in an interview with a national television said; “The appointments they are making are fake and illegal.

“The paraphernalia of government they are enjoying, destroying our country, spending our money is only for a little time.”

He, therefore, said for them at the party, such statement was clearly inciting and a call for mass action against a constituted authority.

Abayomi said, “We think there should be a limit to whipping up the public sentiments against a legitimate government.

“The Arab Spring that rattled the entire Middle East started when the Arab leaders paid no attention to Bouazizi’s subtle.

“There was also the persistent galvanisation of the youths against their governments leading into the mass demonstrations, revolts, and revolutions that almost consumed the region.”

He recalled that Baba-Ahmed while refusing to concede victory in the 2023 presidential election also alleged that Tinubu’s government harboured a grand scheme to dismember Nigeria into six possibly autonomous zones.

He had also alleged that the administration had thrown Nigerians into untold hardship.

All these, Abayomi said, were efforts to whip up sentiments against the government.

He emphasised that Nigeria was presently passing through dangerous and precarious phase.

According to him, this needs every well meaning Nigerian to realise the fragility of the nation by putting politics aside and help to move the nation out of the woods.

Abayomi maintainedd that the leadership of LP had stated clearly that it was within the right of every Nigerian to hold the government accountable for its inability to live up to the expectation.

He, however, said statements that were inciting and capable of plunging the nation into unwarranted combustion, particularly by the political class, must be avoided.

“The Labour Party under the able leadership of Mr Julius Abure, therefore wishes to completely dissociate itself from the unfortunate and reprehensible comments by its former vice presidential candidate,” he said.

Similarly, Abayomi said the party also viewed the alleged comment by Otti of a possible ‘dooms day’ awaiting the Julius Abure’s-led leadership as a direct threat to the lives of the party’s executive members.

He called on all the security agencies to beef up security around their leaders.

  • LP’s acting chairperson speech after NEC meeting

LP’s acting chairperson speech after NEC meeting

The acting National Chairperson of Labour Party, Sen. Nenadi Usman, has assured party members and supporters of her commitment to rebuilding and growing the party for future victory.

In a message of appreciation to members and leaders of the party after Wednesday’s NEC meeting in Abuja, Usman assured that a new Labour Party would come out of the crisis which had now been settled by the Supreme Court.

“Yesterday (Wednesday) marked a significant moment in the life of our great party, the Labour Party, as the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting and Stakeholders’ Interactive Town hall convened in Abuja.

“It was a gathering filled with purpose and clarity, and I was truly honoured to be present among eminent leaders and committed stakeholders — including my dear elder brother and grand leader, H.E Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed,” she said.

Usman also acknowledged other leaders of the party in attendance, including the leader of NEC, Gov. Alex Otti, the Deputy Governor of Abia, Ikechukwu Emetu, LP members of the National and State Assembly members as well as representatives of NLC and TUC, leaders of Obidient Movement and other patriotic Nigerians.

She described the meeting as both timely and necessary, as the stakeholders worked collectively to fortify the foundations of the party, build unity and refocus on its enduring mission — building a New Nigeria that works for all.

Usman, a former Minister of Finance, said she was humbled by the resolution passed at the NEC meeting, appointing her as the acting national chairperson to lead the party during the period of  transition.

She also said that a formal visit was paid to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) where the Supreme Court judgment affirming the legitimacy of the party’s leadership transition was presented and the outcome of NEC proceedings communicated.

“This is more than a procedural step — it is a demonstration of our collective commitment to due process, internal democracy and the transparent governance that the Nigerian people rightfully expect from us.

“I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to all members of the Labour Party, the leadership of the NLC and TUC, the Obidient Movement and every Nigerian who continue to believe in this movement.

“To our leader and presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, your steadfastness and integrity continue to inspire millions.

“I reaffirm my commitment to the values and vision that define the Labour Party — a party of the people, for the people.

“Now is not the time for distraction or division. Now is the time to build, with unity, courage and a deep love for our country,” she said.

Usman said together, she and other stakeholders would continue the journey of hope, while pledging to serve with diligence, openness and unwavering focus on shared goals.

“Let us remain steadfast, engaged and hopeful. The New Nigeria is not a dream deferred — it is a vision in progress,” Usman said.

  • Abure’s election as LP National Chairman was illegitimate – NEC

Abure’s election as LP National Chairman was illegitimate – NEC

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has said that the elections that brought in Mr Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman did not follow due process.

The Labour party NEC disclosed this at stakeholders interactive town hall meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The meeting had in attendance the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi and the only state governor  of the Labour party, Dr Alex Otti, in attendance.

The meeting which included Labour Party stakeholders was converged two days after a factional national chairman of the party, Mr Abure, threatened to sanction Otti and Obi for anti-party activities and the planned parallel NEC that was scheduled for Wednesday.

According to them, the convention that brought Abure in did not follow due process of conducting elections from the grassroots through to the national and therefore was not legitimate.

Abia Governor, Dr Alex Otti, who read excerpts from the document of the judgement by the supreme court announced that the court affirmed the leadership of Sen. Nenadi Usman.

Otti said that the Supreme Court has affirmed that the plaintiff (Usman and others) were right in their appeal.

The governor admonished politicians to respect the tenures of office as stipulated in their respective political party constitutions.

He also faulted Abure for insisting on staying as the LP national chairman, even when his tenure had expired and the party members also did not want him again.

“I had a meeting with him (Abure) and asked him, what he wanted, he said he did not want anything; we offered him the Chairmanship of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).

“He went ahead to stay when his tenure and those of the NWC (National Working Committee) had expired.

“The correct procedure if you still want to be national chairman is to start from the ward congress, state congress, zonal congress, where the delegates would emerge for the national convention and everyone member is free to contest,” Otti said.

Also speaking, Mr Peter Obi, the former presidential flag bearer of the party, said the court had done the right thing by vacating the judgement of the Appeal court insisting that the right thing be done.

“Our Governor has said it. Let’s do the right thing. Let’s go and do it from the ward to local government, to state, to zone, and then come and do it nationally. Everybody is free to contest.

“Everybody is free to contest.  Nobody is excluded. I will ensure fairness.

“We want to build a party that will be fair, a party that will be just, a party that people can look at and say, this is how this party is.

“We want to go into the next election knowing fully well that we are offering Nigeria the best of people and competent people for House of Assembly, House of Rep,  Senate, or for Governor, for any level of election.”

Obi stressed that contrary to speculations he had not discussed with anybody about leaving the labour party adding that labour party must stand as one united family and act in love.

The former Anambra State Governor stated that he had not entered into any discussions with any individual or group regarding his departure from the Labour Party and that any decisions about the party’s future would be made in consultation with its stakeholders.

“I have not told anybody that I am leaving the Labour Party,” Obi said.

Senator Nenadi Usman, on her part, said that the judgement of the Supreme Court showed that the interest of the people remained uppermost.

She said that in spite of the ruling in their favour, she would rather have Abure and others at the other side of the party on reconciliation mode in the interest of the party.

The stakeholders resolved to go immediately  from the town hall meetings to INEC to present to them the Certified True Copy (CTC) judgment by the Supreme Court.

They insisted that INEC must do the right thing by not recognising Abure as the party’s national chairman.

  • LP demands probe into secretariat attack

LP demands probe into secretariat attack

The Labour Party (LP) Executive Committee in Lagos State has urged the Nigeria Police and DSS to investigate and prosecute those behind Monday’s attack on its secretariat.

Mrs Dayo Ekong, Lagos LP Chairperson, made this call during a news conference on Tuesday at the secretariat, joined by other state executive committee members.

She stated the attack occurred while principal officers were in Abuja attending the party’s National Executive Council meeting on the same day.

“We urge President Bola Tinubu, Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, and the State Security Director to urgently intervene in this matter,” Ekong appealed.

She stressed the need for the perpetrators to be investigated, prosecuted and punished for what she described as a heinous crime against the state.

Describing the attackers as debased and morally bankrupt miscreants, Ekong said they must face the consequences of taking the law into their hands.

She alleged the attack was led by one Mr Rasheed Bamishe, who illegally and forcefully entered the secretariat at 59 Oduduwa Way, GRA Ikeja.

According to her, the armed thugs used dangerous weapons, charms, and fetish objects to rob and vandalise the offices of principal party officers.

“They destroyed furniture and fittings, carted away valuables worth hundreds of millions, and stole both local and foreign currencies kept in the offices,” Ekong added.

She also said the attackers took away sensitive documents and files after forcefully opening the file cabinets across various offices.

“Most disturbing, they physically assaulted and seriously injured loyal staff present at the secretariat during the attack,” the chairperson said.

Ekong confirmed that the five injured staff members were receiving medical treatment and were responding positively.

She claimed the attack was executed with support and sponsorship from certain influential Labour Party members in Lagos State.

“These individuals will be exposed in due time. We see no justification for this wicked and ill-intentioned assault on the party,” she said.

She alleged the motive was to steal, injure, and possibly assassinate staff and leadership of the party through the criminal operation.

Ekong maintained that such conduct does not reflect LP values and would never be tolerated under her leadership.

She stressed LP is for dedicated, patriotic Nigerians committed to building an egalitarian society founded on rule of law and social justice.

“Labour Party in Lagos will pursue lawful means to ensure these perpetrators and their backers face justice, no matter how highly placed,” she vowed.

She described the act as criminal vandalism and armed robbery disguised as politics, calling it a dangerous escalation.

Ekong declared that under Mr Julius Abure’s national leadership and her chairmanship, there are no vacancies in any LP organ.

“The Supreme Court has given final judgement. Leadership of the party is settled and not up for debate,” she affirmed.

Supporting the chairperson’s remarks, Mr Sam Okpala, Lagos LP Secretary, said the culprits must be punished to deter future attacks.

  • LP NEC passes vote of confidence in Abure-led NWC

LP NEC passes vote of confidence in Abure-led NWC

The National Executive Council (NEC) of Labour Party has passed a vote of confidence in the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee.

This was part of the resolutions at the party’s NEC meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

In a communique read out by the National Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar-Farouk,, the NEC expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court decision which, it said, had returned the power, glory and supremacy of political parties.

“The court asserted the supremacy of the party over its internal affairs and that leadership of a political party is not for any court to decide, as it is a no-go area for the court, and so the court did not sack the NWC leadership.

“Accordingly, NEC in session reaffirmed the Nnewi National Convention held on the 27th of March, 2024 that produced the current National Working Committee (NWC) members, under the chairmanship of Barrister Julius Abure.

“NEC-in-session notes the various anti-party activities of Gov. Alex Otti, including calling for unauthorised stakeholders’ meeting and usurping the powers of NEC.

“He (Otti) also conducted LGA election, using another political party.

“The governor has also intensified his effort to factionalise the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

“His anti-party activities are unbecoming of a highly respected personality and this is no longer acceptable,” the communique read.

The LP NEC said that it would not hesitate to discipline the governor, in line with Article 19 of the party’s constitution.”

It also threatened to discipline any member who violated the party’s constitution, regardless of how big or powerful such individuals might be.

“NEC-in-session, in exercise of its duties, hereby cautions the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace unity and integrity of the party, as the NEC will not hesitate to issue stiffer penalty if found culpable,” it said.

The NEC equally condemned the activities of the party’s House of Representatives caucus leader, Rep. Victor Ogene, saying that he had consequently been replaced with Mr Ben Etanabene.

On the Nov. 8 governorship election in Anambra and the 2027 general elections, Julius Abure said that the party was working to resolve the challenges.

He, however, said that the party would only field candidates who would be ready to promote its programmes.

Abure also said that the party was not opposed to coalition with other parties that would promote good governance.

“What the party is against is subversive activities that promote divisions in the party,” he said.

NAN reports that the meeting was attended by members of NWC, national officers of the party, state chairmen and secretaries, stakeholders and co-opted NEC members.

  • NLC planning to invade LP national secretariat -Abure faction alleges

NLC planning to invade LP national secretariat -Abure faction alleges

A faction of the Labour Party (LP) led by Julius Abure has raised concerns that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is planning to storm the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. This comes after the Supreme Court ruled on Friday to nullify an Appeal Court decision that had recognized Abure as the LP’s national chairman.

Following the ruling, Nenadi Usman, head of the LP’s caretaker committee, received support from Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, who all praised the judgment. The LP’s House of Representatives caucus also welcomed the decision, calling it a much-needed boost for the party’s “stability and reinvention.”

The Labour Party is currently grappling with a leadership crisis that has divided the party into competing factions. The NLC, which opposes Abure’s leadership, is at the center of the tensions.

In a statement released on Sunday, Umar Ibrahim, the party’s national secretary, accused the NLC of mobilizing its members, along with hired thugs and other miscreants, in collaboration with Usman’s committee and the National Transition Committee (NTC) to invade the LP national secretariat. Ibrahim claimed that the invasion is set to take place on Monday, with the intention of stealing sensitive documents and damaging party property.

“We view this action as highly irresponsible and a sign of desperation on the part of the NLC,” the statement said. “It has the potential to disturb the peace of the Federal Capital Territory.”

Ibrahim emphasized that the Supreme Court’s April 5, 2025 judgment was clear, affirming that political parties must resolve leadership disputes internally. He pointed out that the ruling did not grant the NLC, the National Caretaker Committee, or any other group the authority to take control of the Labour Party.

“The judgment only reinforces that the leadership issue within a political party is an internal matter,” Ibrahim added. “There is no legal basis for the NLC or any other group to seize control of the Labour Party. Julius Abure, who was lawfully elected at the party’s convention in March 2024, remains the National Chairman of the Labour Party.”

He further warned that any attempt to forcibly remove Abure from his position would be met with strong resistance and urged the police and security agencies to ensure the safety and peace of the party’s secretariat.

  • Leadership crises leave LP without clear direction – Imasuen

Leadership crises leave LP without clear direction – Imasuen

Sen. Neda Imasuen (LP–Edo South) said that the numerous leadership litigations had weakened the Labour Party(LP) and left it without clear direction.

Imasuen said this during an interactive session with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel on Saturday in Benin.

The senator expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision to remove the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the party

He, however, said that the constant legal battles had nearly destroyed the party, resulting in a significant loss of members and public trust.

“They’ve been dragging the party in and out of court. Now that the Supreme Court has finally sealed it, it’s a welcome development,” he said.

He, however, expressed concern about whether the ruling could restore the party’s strength and unity.

“But the question for me—and for all of us—is, where do we go from here? I just hope it’s not too late because the Labour Party is almost decimated.

“Most of the members are gone. Will this judgment bring them back? I don’t know.

“Will it energise those still in the party? Again, I don’t know. Only time will tell,” he added.

However, he also expressed mixed feelings about the party’s trajectory, citing internal instability and lack of sincere leadership.

He voiced frustration with individuals who, in his view, dragged the party in and out of court without genuine concern for its well-being.

The senator condemned their actions, arguing that such behaviour undermined the party’s long-term interests, especially in an already volatile political environment.

Imasuen criticised the leadership of Abure, stating that the party deteriorated under his watch.

He argued that Abure failed to uphold the core values and goals of the LP, leading to disillusionment among members.

Describing the internal crisis, he lamented that the party had become unrecognisable, riddled with infighting and power struggles rather than focused on its primary mission.

“A lot has gone wrong in the Labour Party, and it’s very unfortunate. Abure, who was chairman at the time, in my opinion, really didn’t have the party at heart.

“The party became something that didn’t matter to them. It was more about fighting and tearing the party apart than preserving it.

“That’s not what I expected from someone in leadership,” he said.

When asked about his political future, Imasuen declined to confirm whether he would seek reelection in 2027.

He said he would take time to evaluate all options before committing to any political platform, including LP or APC.

NAN reports that the Supreme Court, through a five-member panel, ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to declare Abure as LP’s national chairman.

According to the apex court, leadership disputes within political parties are internal matters and should not have been decided by the appellate court, thereby setting aside the previous rulings.
