The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) under the Chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has approved the elevation of 87 legal practitioners to the Inner Bar.

Hajo Bello, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of LPPC disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Bello said that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) rank is awarded as a mark of excellence to members of the legal profession, who have distinguished themselves as advocates and academics.

Messrs Baba Dalah and Monday Ubani were among the notable names out of the 87 that got the rank of SAN.

Bello  said that the LPPC at its 164th plenary session further considered five different petitions written against some of the applicants,  and determined that each of the petitions lacked merit and were dismissed.

LPPC admits error in latest SAN list

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) said on Friday that the list of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) appointees released on Thursday contained an error.

The LPPC Secretary and acting Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hajjo Sarki Bello, in a statement, said a name on the list was not properly identified.

Bello said, while the actual appointee is “Osaka, Benjamin Nwora esq”, he was wrongly identified in the list of Thursday as “Nworka Chidi Benjamin esq,” and listed as number 43 on the list.

Part of the statement reads: “In the press release issued by this office yesterday, 21st October 2021 announcing the list of successful applicants for the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Nworka, Chidi Benjamin, Esq, listed as No 43 was mistakenly included in the list of advocate appointees.

“The actual successful applicant that ought to be in the said list is Osaka, Benjamin Nwora, Esq.

“The mix-up is highly regretted and we apologise to all persons affected by it,” it said.

The LPPC said it has since come up with a revised list in which the appointees are now listed in order of seniority, with Osaka Benjamin Nwora now listed as number 21.

LPPC restores SAN rank of Beluolisa Nwofor

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has restored the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria to Mr Beluolisa Nwofor, which was earlier withdrawn from him.

This was conveyed in a notification dated September 10, and titled; “Notification of Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria”, and marked LPPC/CJN/CH/M143/REIN/2021.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of LPPC, Justice Tanko Muhammad signed the notification letter on Sunday.

“This is to formally notify you that the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, at its general meeting, held on Tuesday, the 7th day of September, 2021, considered your application for the restoration of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on you, which was earlier withdrawn.

“After deliberations, the Committee upon being satisfied that conditions for restoration have been met and in the exercise of the powers vested on it by the provisions of Paragraph 27 of the 2018 Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and All Matters Pertaining to the rank, resolved to restore the use of the rank in your favour with immediate effect.

“Sequel to the foregoing, the Committee has further directed that you be informed that any future act or conduct on your part that runs foul of the provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct of Legal Practitioners may attract a stiffer sanction against you”.

The Committee had at its 126th general meeting of the LPPC stripped him of the rank following a petition to the committee by the former Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal.

He was accused of being “rude” to the panel of Court of Appeal justices when he appeared before them on November 16, 2016 in Appeal No. CA/A/551c/M/2016 between Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) and Prince Ebiyi Poroye and 10 others in connection with the 2016 Ondo State Governorship Election.

LPPC distances self from list of 2021 SANs in circulation

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) has distanced itself from reports that the list of successful candidates for the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) this year has been released.

The LPPC, in a statement on Wednesday by the Director (Press and Information), Supreme Court of Nigeria, Dr. Festus Akande said the process for the final selection was still on.

Akande said the LPPC would make public the final list through media advertisement, as it has always done.

The LPPC warned those peddling falsehood about its activities to desist, threatening to go after those behind the false information and subject them to the full weight of the law.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a story by an online medium that goes by the name, ‘loyalnigerianlawyer.com,’ with the above caption which is currently in circulation with a purported list of ‘successful candidates’ that emerged after the second filtration exercise by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC).

“We wish to state clearly that the above information is fake, unofficial and untrue. It’s a mere figment of the imagination of the authors who may ostensibly be on a mission to impugn and malign the reputation and integrity of the LPPC with a view to causing confusion and skepticism in the public space.

“The information should be discountenanced by whosoever might have come across it.

“For the umpteenth time, we wish to let the public know that any information, especially issues regarding the above topic can only emanate from the office of the LPPC Secretary/Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“Anything outside this official source should be disregarded. As has been the practice, all information concerning the LPPC, especially those bordering on the announcement of successful applicants for the award of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, are published in reputable national dailies and this year’s own will not be an exception.

“The perpetrators of such illegal act would be apprehended and given appropriate sanctions to serve as deterrent to others that might be waiting in the queue to do same in the future.

“The Committee may be forced to refer the conduct of such bloggers who are legal practitioners to the appropriate disciplinary committee of Body of Benchers. A word is enough for the wise.

“On this note, we wish to inform and assure our esteemed legal community and the general public that the authentic official list of the successful applicants that emerged from the second filtration exercise by the LPPC will be made public through advertorials in the national dailies in due course.”

  • Misconduct: LPPC sanctions two senior Nigerian lawyers, withdrawals SAN titles

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, LPPC, on Thursday announced the withdrawal of the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from two lawyers for misconduct.

In a statement signed by its secretary, Hadiza Mustapha, the committee said the first affected lawyer, Oluwatoyin Bashorun, would not be allowed to re-apply for the position till after three years.

According to the statement, the other lawyer, Kunle Ogunban has been relinquished of all privileges attached to the title.

At the last Emergency Meeting which was held on September, 15 2017; the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee by virtue of Section 5 (1) of the Legal Practitioners Act CAP L11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria. 2004 as amended, decided to suspend the oonferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on Oluwatoyin Ajoke Bashorun Esq. pending the investigation of all petitions filed against her.

This is to notify the General Public that after a thorough investigation of the petition, the sub-committee as setup by the Legal Practitioners’ Privdeges Committee (at which the Applicant was given a fair hearing) at its 129m Plenary Meeting upheld the recommendations of the subcommittee to wit:

That the petitioner’s petition is meritorious, having found that the respondent stayed and continued to stay in a rented property for nine years without paying rent.

That Oluwatoyin Ajoke Bashorun Esq. being an officer in the temple of Justice and an aspirant to the exalted position of Senior Advocate of Nigeria has conducted herself in a manner which is clearly in contravention of the provisions of paragraphs 18(2) (a) & (c) and 19 (a) (b) (c) & (d) of the,” the statement said.

Regarding Mr. Ogumba, the statement said thus:

Honeywell Group petitioned Kunle Ogunba SAN alleging professional misconduct against him. The misconduct allegedly consists of the institution of multiplicity of proceedings before different judges of the Federal High Court on the same subject with the deliberate aim of abusing the process of court and derailing the course of justice.

This is to further notify the General Public that after a thorough investigation of the petition by the sub-committee set up by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (at which the Respondent was given a fair hearing) it was decided that the petition is meritorious. Consequently, the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee at its 129th Plenary Meeting has withdrawn the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Kunle Ogunba Esq. and all other privileges attached to the rank forthwith.”

According to the statement, the guidelines for the conferment of the title which Mr. Bashorun was found wanting in complying with include the following:

The candidate must be of good character and must have no pending disciplinary case or complaint relating to professional misconduct against him. A candidate shall he considered ineligible if in the opinion of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee the candidate is adjudged to be of the following disposition:

    Bad behaviour, whether in or out of Court; poor temperament or propensity to insult or assault people or cause them harm or put them in a state of fear of bodily harm;

Evidence of moral depravity or other socially unacceptable behaviour; 19(I) A candidate must:

Demonstrate high professional and personal integrity; b. Be honest and straightforward in all his professional/personal dealings,c. Be of good character and reputation; d. Be candid with clients and professional colleagues.”

  • Only female lawyer on SAN award list loses title as LPPC postpones conferment on 29 others

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has reversed its earlier decision to award the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to a Lagos-based female lawyer, Oluwatoyin Ajoke Bashorun.

Bashorun was the only female lawyer on the list of 30 lawyers nominated by the LPPC earlier this year.

The LPPC announced the withdrawal of the title to Mrs. Bashorun in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday. The statement was signed by the committee’s Secretary, Hadizatu Uwani Mustapha.

The statement said the decision to withhold the rank from Mrs. Bashorun was taken at a meeting of the LPPC held on Friday.

However, TheNewsGuru.com reports that the statement was silent on the reason behind the sudden withdrawal of the rank to Mrs. Bashorun. It said investigation on her case was on going.

The statement also did not say why the conferment of the rank on the remaining 29 lawyers, scheduled for September 18 has been shifted.

Part of the statement reads: “Recall that the LPPC announced the nomination for appointment of 30 successful applicants for the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. This was after a thorough investigation of petitions against some of the applicants which is governed by Paragraph 12(2) of the LPPC Guidelines, 2016.

However, after the announcement, more facts have emerged, touching on the eligibility of the otherwise successful applicants.

Consequent upon that, the LPPC, in an emergency meeting held today, 15th day of September, 2017, has decided to defer the conferment of the rank of SAN on Oluwatoyin Ajoke Bashorun, pending further investigation of her case by a special constituted committee set up by my lord, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, chairman of LPPC.”
