I understand why Ten Hag benched me – Luke Shaw

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has accepted that Tyrell Malacia currently plays more at the club.

The 27-year-old will be hoping to work his way back into the starting line-up at United. But he says he understands why manager Erik ten Hag dropped him in the first place.

“I think it shows the trust Gareth (Southgate) has in me,” Shaw told the BBC.

“I look at it from a club perspective. I know the first two games weren’t good enough and fully understand the manager has to make decisions.

“Now the team has been winning and we’ve got to bide our time. The only thing I can do is keep supporting the team, keep training hard and just wait for my time, because I think if I put my head down and did not care, it would be a bigger hill to climb when I want to play.”

I’ve never been happier – Luke Shaw

Manchester United fullback Luke Shaw admits he’s loving England’s Euro 2020 campaign.

Ahead of tonight’s Euro 2020 quarterfinal with Ukraine, Shaw says he’s never been so happy.

He declared: “Everything about the last few days has been so good and I have not felt so happy for a long time. I hope the fans feel the same.

“The experience has been incredible. The team spirit and togetherness of the team is something I have not experienced before. You can see how close everyone is and the way they have built St. George’s Park (England’s base) is also incredible.

“It has gotten good so fast and we have been here for almost a month. Time flies, but we enjoy it.”

  • I always believed I’d turn my career around – Shaw

I always believed I’d turn my career around – Shaw

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw never doubted he would turn his career around at Old Trafford.

The left-back has enjoyed an excellent comeback after falling out of favour under former manager Jose Mourinho.

Speaking ahead of the Europa League final on Wednesday, Shaw said: “I always believed I would be able to do it.

“When I was going through the bad times and wasn’t playing, people were telling me to go play somewhere else.

“No-one wants to leave the biggest club in the world. I believe there was a reason why I was brought here and I didn’t want to leave and not show what I can do.

“I dug deep and I didn’t let anyone affect me. Now I’m on a much better path. The stuff I’ve gone through, if I didn’t have the support I would have struggled even more. My mum and dad, especially, and Anouska have known about my struggles and they’ve been so supportive.

“I had a conversation with my girlfriend before the start of the season about what my aims were. She’s pushed me and kept me on a straight path. Her and the little one have helped me outside of football and it’s nice to know you’re going back to a loving home. You grow up much more when you’ve had a kid.”

I’m more Ashley Cole than Roberto Carlos – Shaw

Manchester United fullback Luke Shaw has laughed off comparisons with Roberto Carlos.

Shaw’s impressive displays for Manchester United this season earned him the club’s Player of the Month awards for February and March, as well as an England recall.

“I’ve seen some things on it on social media and sometimes in my group chats my mates send me some stuff and I just laugh about it,” said Shaw, referring to the Roberto Carlos comparison.

“I can’t be compared to him, he was unbelievable! I’m aware of it and it’s nice to be even mentioned alongside his name, but I just laugh about it.”

Despite being compared to the Brazilian icon, left-back Shaw revealed the player he admired the most in that position was former Chelsea and England star Ashley Cole.

“Looking back at when I was growing up and my sort of era, and watching him a lot and basing my game a lot on him and what I wanted to be like as a player, then I would have to say Ashley Cole,” said Shaw.

“I’ve always been a massive fan of him and thought, when I was growing up, he was one of the best left-backs at that time.

“For me, as an all-round full-back, he was one of the best I’ve ever seen with attacking and defending, so I’d say Ashley Cole.”

Man Utd players delighted Ighalo staying – Shaw

Manchester United fullback Luke Shaw says the players are delighted Odion Ighalo is staying.

Ighalo has just had his loan from Shanghai Shenhua extended to the end of the year.

“All the players are really happy for him,” Shaw said. “Obviously his situation was up in the air and we try not to talk about that kind of thing at training but we’re just so happy for him.

“Before he arrived, a few people outside the club weren’t too sure what he was going to bring to the club, but he’s shown everyone because he’s brought goals and a different style to our other strikers.

“He’s earned and deserved the chance to stay here longer. He brings happiness and a smile to the place.

“He’s great in training but he’s also been really important at times during games and scored some great goals.

“Now that everything’s sorted, hopefully he can relax now and settle back into doing what he was doing before football stopped.”

  • Scrap Premier League season, says Luke Shaw

Scrap Premier League season, says Luke Shaw

The 2019/2020 English Premier League season must be scrapped and declared null and void if it cannot be restarted due to the coronavirus pandemic, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has said.

The Premier League confirmed last week that the season, originally suspended until April 30, would not resume at the beginning of May.

The season would only return when the situation stabilises.

League leaders Liverpool need six points to seal the title while European spots and relegation candidates are still unclear with nine games to go.

This has raised questions about how they would be decided if the season does not resume.

“Scrap it and start again. Start it again, yeah,” Shaw said during the Combat Corona fundraiser for UNICEF, a FIFA 20 competition that was streamed on Twitch.

“It’s got to be, you know. If we can’t carry it on, it’s got to be void.”

Shaw was part of the event —– which also had Gareth Bale, Paulo Dybala, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jordan Pickford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek —– which raised around 17,000 pounds (20,920 dollars) through online donations.

Some Premier League clubs had mulled finishing the season by playing games without spectators in attendance.

But Shaw said that was not a view he endorsed as fans filling up stadiums was crucial.

“Fans are so important. You realise it even more (now),” Shaw, 24, added. “I think the sport is for fans really… I think if you don’t have fans, and you don’t play in front of fans, it just doesn’t feel right.

“Especially on match days, the fans are always amazing and always help the team. Whether it’s home or even away, our fans are always brilliant and I feel like they’re always there with us.”

Manchester United were three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea before the season was suspended, a position which left them out of reckoning for a UEFA Champions League ticket.

UCL: Shaw own goal gives Barca advantage over Man Utd

Barcelona will take a 1-0 lead over Manchester United into next week’s second leg of their Champions League quarter-final after a 12th-minute Luke Shaw own goal gave them victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Sergio Busquets found Lionel Messi with a clever ball into the area and the Argentine carved out space on the left to deliver a lofted cross to Luis Suarez at the back post.

The Uruguayan’s header deflected off the shoulder of a scrambling Shaw and beat David De Gea to give the visitors the lead.

And although the linesman initially flagged for offside, the goal was given after a VAR video review.

United’s best chance of the first half fell to Diogo Dalot but the Portuguese made a mess of a fine Marcus Rashford cross, heading harmlessly across the goal from close-range.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team had struggled to get a foothold in the game during the opening 45 minutes but they were much improved after the break.

United applied plenty of pressure without creating any clear chances.

Barcelona could have added a second had Suarez not fired into the side-netting from a promising position after a clever through ball from Nelson Semedo.

Barcelona have not lost at home in the Champions League since 2013.

EPL: Man Utd can make top four – Luke Shaw

Manchester United can still qualify for the Champions League after winning in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game in charge, says left-back Luke Shaw.

United won 5-1 at Cardiff in the first match since sacking Jose Mourinho and putting their former striker Solskjaer in interim charge.

They are sixth in the Premier League, eight points behind Chelsea in fourth.

“Of course we want the top four; we want to be playing in the Champions League next season,” Shaw said.

“I don’t see why we can’t if we keep playing like that.”

United are in this season’s Champions League and face Paris St-Germain in the last 16.

Shaw played the full game against Cardiff, having been dropped for Mourinho’s final three Premier League games in charge.

The England defender was one of several United players to fall out with the Portuguese during his two and a half years in charge.

“People might be quick to forget what Jose did for United – the three trophies he won – he did a lot,” said Shaw, referring to the fact that Mourinho won the Community Shield, Europa League and FA Cup in his first season, 2016-17.

“One of the trophies [Europa League] was one we had not won before, and he took us to three trophies in one season. So those people need to respect him and remember what he did.”

Man Utd Luke Shaw agrees new deal at Old Trafford

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has agreed a new five-year deal with the Red Devils, worth a reported £150,000 per week.

The 23-year-old England international’s current contract was set to expire next summer, BBC reports.
Shaw’s progress has been disrupted by poor form and fitness issues, limiting him to only 75 appearances, but he has been a regular for United this season.
Recent performances earned Shaw – who joined United from Southampton for £27m in 2014 – an international recall.

Man Utd defender Luke Shaw recalled to England squad

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has been included in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man England squad for September’s fixtures against Spain and Switzerland.

Shaw, 23, last played for England in March 2017, as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 friendly defeat by Germany.

Liverpool pair Joe Gomez and Adam Lallana, and Burnley’s James Tarkowski are also included in Southgate’s first post-World Cup squad.

“Luke has always been a player we have liked,” said Southgate.

Shaw endured a tough 2017-18 season, facing public criticism from United manager Jose Mourinho, who questioned his approach to training and commitment to the club.

But the former Southampton player, who has seven international caps, has enjoyed a strong start to the new Premier League season, scoring his first senior goal against Leicester City this month.

“He’s had a difficult period in terms of adapting to a new club and a horrendous injury that he had to overcome,” Southgate added.

“I’m really impressed with his physical condition. He’s shown an extra edge to his game in the last couple of games. He’s shown aggression and a desire not to lose, and is looking back to his powerful best.”

England open their Uefa Nations League campaign against Spain at Wembley on 8 September, before facing Switzerland three days later in Leicester for a Kick It Out international friendly.

Shaw’s United team-mate Ashley Young, who helped England reach the World Cup semi-finals, has been left out of the squad, as has Phil Jones, who is injured.

“I want us to try and capture what we had this summer,” said Southgate.

“Once we’re through this camp, there’s going to be competition from others. People are going to have to play at a good level to retain their places.”
