Lynching of David Imoh: Police give update

The Police Command in Lagos State has said that there is no cover-up in the case of Mr David Imoh who was killed and burnt by some motorcyclists on May 12 in Lekki.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin,  in Lagos on Monday.

Hundeyin said, “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to a write-up making the rounds on social media by a faceless DSS officer, claiming a cover-up by the Police in the unfortunate lynching of David Imoh on May 12.

“The Command wishes to debunk this write-up as nothing but a cunningly-crafted work of fiction, ill-intended by some unpatriotic persons and war mongers to cause disaffection, and possibly ethnic war among Nigerians.”

He said that  officers from the command  arrived the location of the crime on time to arrest the perpetrators and saved two other victims.

He said, “The Command again confirms that the Divisional Police Officer, Maroko Division,  arrived at the  crime scene, promptly arrested four suspects and rescued the  two other  persons under attack.

“The numerous arrests, some of whom made videos, can attest to this.

“It is, therefore,  ridiculous, frivolous and laughable that the suspects were allegedly paid a miserly N100,000 each to admit and take the fall for murder.

“Further investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department led to the arrest of two other suspects.

According to him, all the six suspects were paraded before the media by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Abiodun Alabi,  on Friday, May 20.

“The seventh suspect, Usman Abubakar, 22 (not the mastermind), who literally poured petrol on the victim, was eventually arrested the next day.

“This brings the total number of arrested suspects to seven,” he said.

The PPRO  added that the Director of DSS in Lagos State confirmed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police that the alleged officer was unknown to them, he equally confirmed that the DSS neither arrested nor handed over any suspect to the police.

The PPRO said that CP Alabi had urged Nigerians to disregard the write-up as a mischievous attempt by some  fifth columnists to cause trouble within the country.

  • Minister condemns lynching of ‘one chance’ robbers in Abuja

Minister condemns lynching of ‘one chance’ robbers in Abuja

The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello has decried the lynching of three suspected traffic robbers popularly known as ‘One Chance’ in the Dutse Alhaji area of the Federal Capital City.

The Special Assistant on Media to the FCT Minister, Malam Abubakar Sani made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

NAN reports that three suspected ‘one chance’ robbers were allegedly set ablaze by a mob at Dutse Alhaji junction on Kubwa-Zuba highway, on Monday in Abuja.

The minister frowned at the mob action which led to the unfortunate death of the three suspects and restated the FCT Administration’s resolve to reduce criminal activities to the barest in Abuja.

“The FCT Administration is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure that the entire territory is free of criminality and criminal elements.

“That is why we are working round the clock with the security agencies to maintain a 24 hours surveillance round the city and its environs.

“To a very large extent, we are happy with what the security agencies are doing to keep the territory safe and arrest all criminal elements particularly traffic robbers, kidnappers and other lawbreakers where ever they may be.”

Bello, however, noted that the killing of the three robbers was an act of lawlessness which the FCT Administration strongly condemned.

“No group or individual has the right to take anybody’s life the way these young men were burnt to death. I have directed the Police to carry out a thorough investigation and bring the papetrators to book”.

The Minister, who called on residents to remain law abiding, warned that any individual or group found taking laws into their hands or resorting to self help would be dealt with in accordance with the relevant law.

Bello appealed to traditional, community and religious leaders to step up engagements with their subjects by emphasising the need for obedience to the laws of the land and refraining from acts capable of causing the breakdown of law and order.

  • Supplementary polls: Journalists escape lynching in Kano

Some journalists covering the supplementary governorship election in Kano State on Saturday escaped lynching by some suspected thugs at Suntulma Primary School in Gama ward of Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state.

NAN reports that the journalists who were in the area to monitor the poll, were chased out of the place by the hoodlums.

Trouble began when some of the newsmen tried to interview some voters who were denied access into the classrooms where some of the polling units were stationed.

While trying to flee the troubled area, some of the journalists fell on ground and one of them (name withheld), had to take refuge in a nearby Mosque in order to save his life.

NAN also reports that some of the reporters had their clothes torn by the thugs.

Speaking to journalists, some voters alleged that they were not allowed to exercise their franchise as they were chased out of the area.

One of them, Aminu Tijjani, said he went to the primary school to cast his vote at his polling unit but had to return to escape the hoodlums’ attack.

The situation is very bad and this is not how to conduct an election where people or voters are denied the opportunity to vote,” Mr Tijjani said.

Another voter, Sani Abdullahi, said he came to vote as early as 8 a.m. but was scared away by the suspected thugs numbering about 10.

Meanwhile, voting has commenced in other affected polling units across the 28 local government areas of the state.

NAN reports that the re-run election is being conducted to decide the winner between two candidates – Abba Kabir-Yusuf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 1,014,477 votes, and incumbent Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who got 987,810 votes in the first poll conducted on March 9.

The margin between the candidates stood at 26,655 votes in favour of Mr Kabir-Yusuf.
