Ligue 1: Lyon set to send Gift Orban on loan

Olympique Lyon is considering loaning out Gift Orban for the 2024/25 season. Orban joined the former Ligue 1 champions in January but has struggled to make an impact at the club.

Reports from France indicate that two clubs are interested in acquiring the striker on loan. One offer comes from the Brazilian club Botafogo, which may not be attractive to Orban.

The second offer is from Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids. This move might be more appealing to Orban due to his English-speaking background, which could provide a more comfortable environment.

Orban was invited for one of the Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers but couldn’t play as he cropped an injury in training.

The Nigerian was only able to record just a single goal for Lyon since joining in January.

Marseille’s Ligue 1 home match with Lyon was postponed after Lyon boss Fabio Grosso was injured when the team coach was attacked on the way to the ground.

Images on social media showed a bloodied Grosso laid on a stretcher.

According to AFP, the Lyon coach was hit by rocks on its way to Stade Velodrome.

The game between bottom-of-the table Lyon and 10th-placed Marseille was due to kick off at 19:45 GMT on Sunday.

Thousands of fans were already inside the ground when the announcement was made that the game had been postponed.

“We took into account Lyon’s desires for the match not to take place,” said match referee Francois Letexier at a news conference.

French football expert Julien Laurens, writing on X, described it as a “terrible image for French football”.

“What a scandalous mess,” he added. “This is not the first time this has happened (and not the last sadly) but I have no words for this. Unacceptable again.”

Few months ago, Nigerians were shocked to hear that the social media celebrity, John Lyon, who flaunts dollars on social media confessed to his involvement in two kidnap incidents.

Confessing to the crimes while being paraded by police few months ago, John claimed that his friends (the kidnap gang) asked him to give them the address of his former boss, Danjuma Omeje, and that few days later, they kidnapped him and collected a ransom of N45 million from him.

Ligue 1: Lacazette rejoins Lyon on 3-year deal

Former Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette has rejoined French clubside Lyon on a three-year deal.

The 31-year-old former France international was a free agent after seeing out his contract with the English Premier League (EPL) club, which officially expires on June 30.

Ligue 1 side Lyon confirmed on Thursday that they had re-signed the player, a product of their own youth system, who they sold to the Gunners in 2017.

Lacazette joined Arsenal on a five-year deal from Lyon for a club record 46.5 million pounds (58.1 million dollars) in the summer of 2017.

He scored 71 goals in 206 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners.

At the time of his move to London, he had won 11 senior caps for France and has since made a further five appearances.

Lacazette scored six goals and made eight assists in 36 appearances for Arsenal during the 2021/2022 season.

They finished fifth in the Premier League, just missing out on a UEFA Champions League place.

Marcelo dropped for farting, laughing in dressing room

Brazilian defender Marcelo was dropped from the Lyon first team due to continuous farting and laughing in the dressing room.

According to Marca, the team’s management issued a statement in which they tried to explain the atypical situation in the best possible way.

However, the French press revealed the real reason, and it became a topic of debate on Twitter, to the point that a legend like Gary Lineker came to his defense.

The defender was sent to the second team of the French squad for “farting in the locker room and laughing about it with his teammates.”

The experienced 34-year-old was mysteriously dropped from the starting lineup earlier in the season after an “incident in the dressing room,” according to the club, and was ordered to train with the Reserve squad at the Les Gones ground with immediate effect.

The embarrassing incident happened after Lyon’s 3-0 loss to Angers in August 2021, in which Marcelo scored an own goal.

Shortly after, the club’s social networks confirmed in a statement that, following discussions with the boardroom and coach Peter Bosz, the Brazilian defender would be dropped.

Gary Lineker, former England star. “Taking him out of the team for farting? Nowadays I’d be banned for life for shitting on a pitch. The game is gone,” the historic England footballer wrote on his Twitter profile.

“Marcelo’s inappropriate behavior in the dressing room after the match in Angers justifies this decision, which was taken unanimously by the Olympique Lyonnais management team,” the statement read.

“The player was informed of this decision yesterday evening by Juninho and Peter Bosz. The management reiterates that all its players must demonstrate an unwavering mentality and a commitment to quickly return to record results in line with the club’s ambitions.”

Mancini told me to leave Chelsea – Emerson

Lyon left back Emerson admits he was told by Italy coach Roberto Mancini to leave Chelsea.

The full back struggled for regular game time at the Stamford Bridge club, but finally got his move away this summer.

Emerson was told by Mancini to find a new club after an impressive display at Euro 2020, when he replaced Leonardo Spinazzola for the semi-final and final, following the latter’s injury in the quarter-final.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Emerson said: “I decided to leave Chelsea as I had no space. Roberto Mancini told me: you need to play, you’ve to be a starter.

“OL proposed an interesting project and I accepted in two or three days. I’m really happy with my choice.”

  • Messi yet to score first goal as PSG Beat Lyon

Messi yet to score first goal as PSG Beat Lyon

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) needed an extra-time goal to defeat Lyon 2-1 in a French Ligue 1 clash on Sunday, but Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi was not on the scoring sheet as the wait for his first goal in France continued.

Messi outshone his team-mates in PSG’s all-star attack for much of the game at the Parc des Princes but he had been taken off by the time substitute Icardi headed in a cross from the left to secure a win that looked unlikely for long spells.

The excellent Lucas Paqueta gave Lyon the lead in the 54th minute, before Neymar won and then converted from the spot midway through the second half of an absorbing contest at the Parc des Princes.

The fact it was a contest might come as a surprise to many who expect PSG to run away with the Ligue 1 title this season and perhaps even go all the way in the Champions League.

However, they were disappointing in drawing 1-1 with Club Brugge in Belgium in midweek in Messi’s first start for the club and they were given a run for their money by Peter Bosz’s Lyon in a meeting of the two most successful French sides this century.

Yet Icardi –- in many ways the forgotten man of the PSG attack –- allowed his side to make it six wins from six in Ligue 1 this season and they are now five points clear at the top from Marseille.

That gap will surely widen as the weeks go by. Lyon, for all their good intentions here, are already 10 points behind the leaders in ninth place.

Former Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has joined Olympique Lyon on a two-year deal, the French Ligue 1 said on Wednesday.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner with Germany was out of contract in Munich in July and had bided his time before picking his next club.

Lyon, coached by former Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz, conceded 43 goals last term and were looking for an experienced defender.

The 32-year-old Boateng won two UEFA Champions League honours, nine Bundesliga titles and five German Cups at Bayern Munich.

  • Barca schedule date for Depay signing announcement

Barca schedule date for Depay signing announcement

La Liga giant Barcelona are preparing to announce the signing of Lyon striker Memphis Depay this week.

Sport says Depay will become Barcelona’s fourth signing of the summer after the arrivals of Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero, Eric Garcia and Emerson.

A final agreement is close to being signed off and Barça hope to officially announce Depay’s signing on Friday, before the start of the European Championships.

That way, the Lyon forward’s future will not become a distraction during the tournament and he can focus exclusively on the Netherlands.

Depay’s deal with Lyon expires on June 30 and he will sign for Barça on a free transfer.

The forward wants to make the move to Camp Nou and be reunited with Ronald Koeman, his previous coach with the Netherlands, and the final details should be sorted soon.

    Memphis Depay agrees Barca move

Lyon’s Netherlands forward Memphis Depay has agreed a contract with Barcelona and could move before Monday’s deadline, says the French club’s sporting director Juninho.

The former Manchester United player, 26, was left out of the starting XI for Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Marseille.

“He has reached an agreement with Barcelona, we don’t hide that at all,” said Juninho.

*Meanwhile, defender Eric Garcia could also rejoin Barca from Manchester City.

The Premier League club would allow the 19-year-old centre-back to move if they receive a reasonable offer, but are also prepared to let the Spaniard leave on a free transfer next summer.

Garcia is out of contract at the end of this season and has told City he will not sign another one.
