2023: Only Rivers State people will decide next Gov not any individual – Senator Magnus Abe

Senator Magnus Ngei Abe has said that Rivers people will decide who will govern them in 2023 as their fate does not lie in the hands of any individual.

Abe, a former representative of Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, made the declaration in Port Harcourt while addressing some party faithful and returnees of the All Progressives Congress (APC), from different political parties in the Rivers West Senatorial District of the State.

The Senator hailed their decision to reunite with other members of the party in order to build purposefully, describing them as men of honour and integrity who have placed the interest of the state and interest of the party above parochial sentiments.

He maintained that, for Rivers State to actualize the dreams and aspirations of its founding fathers, the people need to come together regardless of whatever may have transpired in the past and focus on the future, as the project is about the future of Rivers State.

Abe said: “Let me thank each and every one of you for the decision you have taken; our brothers and friends from Rivers West who left the course and have decided to comeback for us to join hands together, to get this boat to the shore.

“I also want to assure you that what you have done is what is expected of men of honour and integrity to put the interest of the state and interest of the party above every other interest.

“I want you to know that to take Rivers State to where it needs to be, all of us must come together regardless of what we have done before, regardless of what we have said, regardless of what we have felt before.

“This project is about the future of Rivers State not about the past. Whatever is past let it remain in the past. For what is in front of us is more important than what is behind us.

“Once again, I am very, very happy to welcome you all back into the party and to say, that I will like to invite all men and women of goodwill across Rivers State, those who have the courage, those who have the knowledge, those who have intuition to be able to see what has not happened that can happen.

“Those who have the capacity, those who have the quality to be able to understand what people say, that the time is now.”

He went further to say, that it is important for people to realize that the APC in the State is made up of people, who have brains and could think for themselves.

The Senator said: “It is important for people to realize that the APC in the State is made up of people, who have brains and could think for themselves. And so, we must learn to do things differently.

“That is why the purpose of consultation is important, so that we will not make mistake. All of you that have been the strength of this party, that have been the strength of the Rivers West Senatorial District, all of you that have come to say that you are coming back to join us to work together, you are also part of the consultation and we will listen to you “.

Earlier, leader of Rivers West Senatorial District Plus One, Lucky Ottos said they took the decision to reunite with party members for the interest of a better Rivers State.

Ottos said: “We cannot handover Rivers State to people who are not qualified to govern and that’s why we sat down and decided that we will work with you; Senator Magnus Ngei Abe”.

Highlight of the event was a presentation of request to Senator Abe by the group, urging him to throw his cap into the ring and run for governor of Rivers State in 2023.

2023: Don’t trust Magnus Abe – APC Chieftain warns Tinubu

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has warned a presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, to be wary of erstwhile Rivers South-East Senator, Magnus Ngei Abe.

Eze warned that Abe is not a man Tinubu can trust alleging he diverted over N4 billion meant for road projects in his area.

The APC chieftain issued the warning in response to comments by Abe disparaging the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

Abe was recently alleged to have taken a veiled swipe at Amaechi, chiding him against coming close to the Presidency; hence he does not love stealing money.

Speaking at an event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while declaring his support of Tinubu’s presidential ambition on Tuesday, Abe was reported to have said the seat of the President is strictly for those that love money.

“Nigerians don’t want anybody who does not like money to come near the Presidency,” Abe said.

Reacting, Eze challenged the former lawmaker to desist from dragging Amaechi while declaring his support for Tinubu.

In a statement, the former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP) Eze said “Senator Abe, reputed for political merchandising and sabotage, recently pitched his tent in the camp of former Lagos Governor, Sen. Ahmed Bola Tinubu, following the latter’s declaration to run for the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“A man with a serious character defect speaks from both sides of his mouth and cannot be trusted and thus has severally jumped ship -from Amaechi to Wike to Sylva to Osinbajo and now Tinubu.

“I have resolved never to discuss Senator Abe, haven seen how lowly placed and irrelevant he has become particularly, after exposing himself as one that cannot be trusted after jumping from Amaechi to Wike. Abe later left Wike and embraced Osinbajo and now he has sneaked away from the Vice President for Bola Tinubu. Sen. Abe is far from a man to be taken seriously and these times are too serious for his kind of politics. He is as unstable as water”.

Stressing that everyone reserves the right to association and free speech as allowed by law, Eze said Abe is at liberty to support whoever he wishes. Still, where his right to association is expanded beyond its elastic limit to the extent that it becomes toxic, the guardian of public manners is always ready to intervene.

Noting that “Abe has not escaped the infamy his thievery has earned him,” the party Chief counselled the “Ogoni-born to be preoccupied with thoughts on how to save his neck and the little remainder his public image from the N4 billion road contract fraud perpetrated against his community as publicly alleged by Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, during a visit to Beera, Abe’s home town.”

Eze counselled Abe to do his best to lay off on issues pertaining to “Amaechi and the APC particularly now that he is no longer a registered member of the party and do his best to clear his name from the allegation levelled against him by Governor Nyesom Wike in a video that has gone viral where he was alleged to have embezzled a whopping sum of N4bn meant to construct a road awarded to him within his community.”

He added: “It is sad that instead of addressing the issue that Wike raised, which he said is well documented, instead, Abe accused Wike of awarding to himself over 25 school projects without paying the contractors.

“I am not interested in the comparison between Abe and Wike who ate more Rivers State money than each other but addressing why on earth should a road awarded to him couldn’t be completed or the money returned back to the state coffers.”

Eze tipped Tinubu to be wary of Senator Abe, noting that a “man who could divert N4 billion meant for the construction of roads in his own community, is not a character to be trusted with matters of public and even private interests.”

The APC chieftain called on Nigerians to continue to support the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and especially, “the Transportation Minister, Chibuike Amaechi, in his quest to offer quality service and deliver democratic dividends to the people.”

Those who invest in people never lack – Magnus Abe

Former representative of Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe has said that those who invest in people and the development of their area never lack.

Abe stated this at Kpor, Headquarters of Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State while receiving an award as an Outstanding Unique Leader during the LGA’s 30th Anniversary Celebration.

The Senator berated public servants who believe that stealing public funds that is meant for the development of the people will make them rich, stating that such people always end up being poor.

He said: “I want to thank the government and people of Gokana Local Government Council for finding me worthy for this award on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of our local government area.

“I am here because I support what the council chairman is doing and I’m proud to be part of the gathering of Gokana sons and daughters.

“I know that my presence here will encourage you and I’m glad we are all here to support and encourage you.

“Within your six months in office, you have consulted, reached out and brainstormed with others in your efforts to revamp the structures in the council and remained focused.

“As long as you continue to do what is good for your people, you don’t have to worry, invest in people and you will not lack neither will you be poor.

“By bringing all of us here today, you are bringing our minds back to our local government area. Gokana is growing and Gokana will continue to grow.

“In your address you have asked for computers, Mr. Chairman, I will give you 10 computers. By the grace of God, this local government will exceed the dreams and aspirations of its founding fathers.”

Abe congratulated the Council Chairman, Confidence Deko on his achievements and urged him not to be distracted nor be tired as problems will always come and whenever it comes, God will help him to overcome.

Earlier, the Council Chairman, Confidence Deko while enumerating some of his achievements within the period in office said his aim from the outset is to bring government closer to the people and to establish a thriving and competitive local economy that could attend to the demands of the 21st century.

Deko said: “Today, we are glad to report that peace have returned to the area and the people are back to farming, fishing and living together as neighbours.”

Dignitaries at the event include, the member representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Dum Deekor and the member representing Gokana in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Dumle Maol.

Other dignitaries at the event were former Council Chairman and current Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Fred Kpakol, former MOSOP President, Barrister Ledum Mitee and Professor Gbaranen Gbaanador amongst others.

Direct primaries will end short cut to power – Abe

Former representative of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has advocated the need for Nigerians to support the passage of the Electoral Act by members of the National Assembly.

Abe made the call during a courtesy visit on the Natural and Paramount Ruler of Barako Ancient Community, His Royal Highness (Mene), Comrade, Kadilo Kabari (Gbere Doo-mee VII & Menebon Barako) over the weekend at Barako in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Senator insisted that the anticipated signing of the Electoral Act by President Muhammadu Buhari will end all shortcuts to power and indeed return power to the people.

He went further to say that ultimately the process of INEC supervised direct primaries will reduce cost of organizing elections in Nigeria.

Abe said: “Elections are not expensive; it is the behaviour of people that destroyed the electoral process in our country that has made elections become expensive.

“This electoral Act, if signed by Mr. President will give Nigeria a new beginning and new opportunities for Nigerians to actually reap the dividends of democracy because there would be no shortcut to power anymore.”

He decried a situation where principal stakeholders who ought to be architects of sustainable democracy are those responsible for its chaotic and expensive practice.

Abe said: “The elections are expensive in our country today because all those who should take part in the process, all those who are expected to support the process are the ones working against it.

“Ordinarily, election is a clerical job. All you need is a Polling Clerk, Presiding Officer and Party Agents and they will conduct an election that will produce the kind of result that will be difficult to contest in Court if we allow them to work.

“But, when those who should take part in the process are the ones hiring buses, planning thuggery, bringing Police and Army, all these contribute to make the election process to be expensive, cumbersome and disputed.

The Senator who was also a member of the 7th and 8th Senate insisted that a credible electoral process in Nigeria will change the attitude of politicians.

He said: “When politicians know that their fate in an election will be dependent on the people’s vote, they will behave differently. INEC supervised direct primaries is the way to go.”

Earlier, the Barako Monarch thanked the Senator for the visit as well as his tremendous impact via many developmental projects in Barako Community with the most recent being the FERMA road entering the community and the NDDC casted road leading to the Community Secondary School and Health Centre.

Mene Kadilo Kabari congratulated Senator Abe on his conferment as MENE SUANU 1 OF OGONI by the Chairman of the Supreme council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, King Godwin Gininwa.

Nobody can play politics without me in Rivers – Magnus

Senator Magnus Abe has spoken of his political influence in Rivers State and declared that no one can exclude him from the politics of the opposition All Progressive Congress in the state.

The former lawmaker representing Rivers South-East senatorial district made this assertion while addressing APC stakeholders in Bera community in Gokana Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

According to him: “There is nobody in Nigeria, there is nobody in Rivers State, who would say there is no APC in Gokana. Can anybody say that? And you can also see that because of the love that my people have shown to me, because of the love and respect that Ogoni people have shown me, it is now clear to the whole of Nigeria, to the whole of Rivers State that, it would be impossible, I repeat the word impossible, to do the politics of APC here in Rivers State without you and me.”

Abe further explained that the party “belongs to all of us, no matter your power, money, without the people you cannot do politics, you are the people.”

Speaking further, he said: “I came here today, to tell you that the National said we should be patient. We have been patient; continue to be patient. Let us wait; when they make their decision, we will know, if they fail to take a decision after everything they have said, they would also explain to you and we’ll know. But, nobody should shake.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God. Consistently, the people have been clear that what is happening in APC in Rivers State is wrong. Everybody, committee and panel that have looked at the issues objectively, had said that what is happening here is wrong.

“All we need is those that would have the courage to fix what is wrong so that the party can move on. If that is done, the party will move on, success would be ours.

“So, remain resolute, don’t shake, don’t fear, anybody that knows where he or she is going would not be afraid when people push you because you know where you are going.”

Jegede v Akeredolu: Omo-Agege, Magnus Abe puncture Keyamo’s submission, say APC breached no law appointing Yobe Gov APC Caretaker Committee Chairman

The submission by the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo (SAN) on the Supreme Court judgement of Wednesday, July 28, 2021 that narrowly upheld the election of Ondo governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) in a suit filed by candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his major opponent in the 2020 governorship election in the state, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) and how such might might affect the APC especially it regards the scheduled nationwide congresses has elucidated counter submissions from Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and former representative of Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo (SAN) had in a statement on Wednesday urged the party to shelve its planned congresses and national convention to avoid a ‘top to bottom’ destruction from the judiciary.

However, the party in a statement on Thursday said the congresses will go as scheduled.

In their separate reactions on Thursday, Omo-Agege and Abe explained that the Supreme Court judgement Jegede vs Akeredolu’s case have does not in anyway implied that a Governor cannot serve as Chairman of any Committee in a political party of which he is a member.

They both urged the party to go ahead with the nationwide congresses as scheduled without fear of legal battles as implied in some quarters.

    Read their submissions below:

LEGAL OPINION ON THE JUDGMENT OF THE SUPREME COURT OF NIGERIA IN JEGEDE V. AKEREDOLU AND THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION 183 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA AS IT AFFECTS THE APC SCHEDULED CONGRESSES NATIONWIDE

Yesterday, Wednesday 28th, July, 2021, the Supreme Court delivered its judgment dismissing the appeal initiated by Eyitayo Jegede against the election of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Surprisingly, mischief makers for obviously nefarious intensions, resort to misinterpret the said judgment vis-a-vis the purport of section 183 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as it affects the APC Congresses scheduled for Saturday.

Without much ado, it is important to state that the majority decision of the Supreme Court in Jegede’s case, emphatically dismissed the appeal and did not consider the issue of the provisions of Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution, neither did the majority decision make any comments on the competence of Governor Mai Mala Bumi as the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee. The appeal was dismissed on the ground of competence or lack thereof for the non-joinder of a necessary party to the suit at the lower court.

It is therefore disingenuous, unsound and mischievous to attempt to misinform the reading public of what was not the ratio decidendi of the judgment of the court. Even if the apex court had considered the provisions of Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution, the majority panel would still have dismissed the appeal.

Having established the above point, it is necessary to proceed to clear the gross misconception of the provisions of section 183 of the 1999 Constitution.

The sole question that begs for consideration is whether the appointment of Governor Mai Mala Bumi as the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman offends the provisions of Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended)?

In answering the above question, it is pertinent to reproduce the provisions of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) as follows:

“The governor shall not, during the period when he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever.”

In view of the foregoing constitutional provisions, the question becomes: Is the appointment of a Governor to Chair a Caretaker COMMITTEE of his political party, same not being an ‘Executive Office’ in respect of which he is to be paid remuneration, incompetent? Can it be said that a State Governor who is the Chairman of the Governors Forum of Nigeria is occupying an “Executive office”? Can it also be argued that the President cannot be appointed as the Chairman of Africa Union?

From the explicit provision of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), it is absolutely impossible and untenable to argue that the provisions of Section 183 bars a Governor from being a Chairman or member of a Caretaker Committee set up by his or her political party. More so, the position of the Chairman of a Caretaker Committee cannot by any sense of imagination, logic or simple common sense be classified as a being a salaried Executive office.

It is important at this point to restate the fact, that the Caretaker Committee was duly constituted by the NEC of the party and given a specific mandate to put necessary measures in place to conduct a seamless elective National Convention.

There is no law under our legal jurisprudence that bars or prohibits a Governor who is a member of a political party and won elections under the political party from carrying out specific assignments on-behalf of his party. How this will amount to holding an Executive office is beyond every stretch of human comprehension.

In the light of the foregoing exposition, it is humbly and firmly stated that *Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) only bars a Governor from holding Executive positions like being a Minister, or any other executive positions for which he shall be paid for. It does not by any scintilla of imagination, render the appointment of Governor Bumi as APC Caretaker Committee Chairman incompetent and will not in anyway, affect the legality or competence of the APC scheduled Congresses.

JEGEDE VS. AKEREDOLU: LET’S THREAD CAUTIOUSLY, ABE TELLS KEYAMO, OTHERS

…As self-immolation is not an option for APC

Former representative of Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has appealed to Barrister Festus Keyamo, SAN, and APC party faithful to thread carefully and cautiously as there is nothing in the Supreme Court Judgement in Jegede Vs. Akeredolu that implies that a Governor cannot serve as Chairman of any Committee in a political party of which he is a member.

Abe, in a statement he personally signed and posted on his Facebook account titled: “NO KEYAMO: SELF IMMOLATION IS NOT THE OPTION FOR APC,” stated that the Buni-led caretaker committee in the determined effort to reposition the party has adjusted the seating arrangements in a lot of states and this may explain the stand that some party leaders will take on this issue. But it is important that we deal with facts and the law.

The statement reads in parts: “I was taken aback when my attention was drawn to a statement making the rounds on social media credited to my learned friend, Festus Keyamo, SAN, the Hon. Minister of State for Labour, demanding that our party the, All Progressives Congress (APC) must immediately halt all preparations for the forthcoming congresses and disband the Governor Mai Mala Buni – led National Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC).

“Keyamo’s argument is premised on his interpretation of the judgement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Jegede Vs Akeredolu.

Most members of the APC accepted the reality of the CECPC as a decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC with Mr. President as leader of the party in attendance.

Party leaders who had reservations about the constitution of the CECPC were informed that the decision to establish the committee was reached only after extensive legal examination of the issues confronting the APC at that time by a body of eminent lawyers in leadership positions in the APC. Barrister Festus Keyamo, I am given to understand, was one of those legal luminaries whose stand swayed the President in support of the CECPC option as the only means to save our party from imminent self-destruction. That is why I was taken aback by the quick and sudden volte-face of Mr. Keyamo in the face o fJegede vs. Akeredolu.

There is a popular saying that sometimes “where you stand on an issue is determined by where you sit”.

The Buni-led caretaker committee in the determined effort to reposition the party and carry out its difficult assignment, has adjusted the seating arrangements in a lot of States and this may explain the stand that some party leaders will take on this issue. But it is important that we deal with facts and the law.

The Supreme Court (according to Keyamo’s write-up) held that Buni was not a party to the case and so his status was not determined in the case of Jegede Vs. Akeredolu.

It is therefore shocking that any legal practitioner will on the basis of that judgement reach the conclusion that the Supreme Court has already decided that chairmanship of a committee constituted by the National Executive Committee of a political party constitutes paid employment or an executive position as stated in section 183 of the constitution.

Almost every convention committee or caretaker committee of every political party in this country that is privileged to have a governor in its fold has been chaired by a Governor, almost every primary election that produced our governorship candidates have been chaired by a Governor.

A decision by the Supreme Court that chairmanship of a committee constituted by NEC for a particular purpose can constitute an executive position or paid employment as envisaged by the constitution of Nigeria must be a matter of evidence, and it will have grave consequences not only for the APC but the entire polity.

The convention planning committee is a committee of NEC. Buni was not appointed as executive chairman of the APC, he is our Convention Committee Chairman but because the Working Committee of the party was dissolved by NEC, the caretaker members are to take care of the affairs of the party on behalf of NEC until an Executive Chairman is elected by convention.

This was carefully spelt out in the NEC resolutions that gave birth to CECPC.

These documents and others pertaining to Buni, and his lack of remuneration and activities will be evidence before any judicial proceedings to determine the status of the Buni-led Caretaker Committee.

Any member of the party who is emboldened by Barrister Keyamo’s interpretation of Jegede Vs. Akeredolu to challenge the legality of the caretaker arrangement of our party on that basis may do so, but the litigant will of course bear the burden of proof, and the party should be ready to defend its own position based on the evidence.

With all due respect to my learned friend, Festus Keyamo, SAN, he was merely second guessing the Supreme Court when he gave the impression or suggested, based on his understanding and interpretation of the said judgement, that any legal challenge against Buni, must succeed, no matter the circumstances of the challenge, insisting that mere joining Governor Buni will be enough for any litigation against the APC to succeed.

This is simply incorrect. No two cases are the same. The Supreme Court itself wisely declined to make a pronouncement against Buni on the ground that he was not joined and not heard.

To now conclude that whatever he would say when heard would not amount to anything as judgement must be passed against him is to overlook the age-long admonition of the same Supreme Court itself in the 1987 case of Lawrence V. Nnaife that “justice and fairness demand that the ratio of any case should not be pulled by the hair of the head and made Willy-nilly to apply where the surrounding circumstances are different”.

Since the surrounding circumstances have not been made known to the Supreme Court for which it rightly declined to condemn Buni unheard, it’s preposterous to second-guess the Supreme Court on that.

Let’s tread carefully, cautiously. Instead of throwing away the baby with the bathwater, and causing a stampede, let’s all support the Caretaker to the point that it births a proper executive council to prepare us for the future, especially the 2023 elections.

In the meantime we must consider our position carefully. We are less than two years away from the 2023 general elections, we have dissolved all our party structures across the States, we are less than a week away from the beginning of congresses to usher in our new Working Committee.

It has taken us almost a year to get to this point, there is no guarantee that an attempt to start a new experiment at this point will not result in a political or legal quagmire that will lead to an implosion in the APC.

There is no perfect arrangement in politics. The best course open to the APC is for our leaders to give full support and cooperation to the CECPC to conclude its assignment and usher in a new elected executive for the party.

Let me add for the record that there are issues in the party. Even the registration and revalidation exercise promised by the party in Rivers State has not been carried out and once again members of the APC in Rivers State are being denied forms for participation in our congresses, but problems within the party need to be dealt with”.

To this end, Abe maintained that to throw out the CECPC at this point may amount to self-immolation from which we may not recover as a political party”.

In conclusion, the Senator added: “we must be steadfast and stay the course, there is nothing in the Supreme Court Judgement in Jegede Vs. Akeredolu that implies that a Governor cannot serve as Chairman of any committee in a political party of which he is a member. The APC CECPC remains on firm ground”.

  • Rivers APC, No Place for violence: It’s time to move forward-Abe

Rivers APC, No Place for violence: It’s time to move forward-Abe

Former representative of Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe has appealed to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Rivers State to denounce violence and resists the temptation of being provoked to attack anyone.

Abe, in a statement he personally signed titled: “RIVERS APC, NO PLACE FOR VIOLENCE: ITS TIME TO MOVE FORWARD” insisted that a political disagreement does not amount to a land dispute neither a communal riot in which there is no meeting point. Therefore, he called on all members of the party in Rivers State to give peace a chance.

The Senator said: “I received with shock and sadness the news of the unwarranted and senseless attack on law-abiding citizens and members of the All Progressives Congress in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State.

“Party members who had gathered peacefully in response to the directive of the Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of the party to members and intending members in Rivers, Cross River, Kano, Imo and Kwara States who were unable to take part in the last registration and revalidation exercise could now do so, members met to sensitize themselves and prepare for the exercise, only to be brutally attacked by other members of the APC loyal to the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“Anyone who has been following Rivers politics will remember that ONELGA was one of the flashpoint of political violence in Rivers State where hundreds of our party supporters and their families were summarily executed just for being members of the APC. ONELGA should therefore ordinarily be the last place on earth in which one would expect members of the APC to attack and attempt to kill one another for any reason whatsoever.

“It is therefore doubly painful that once more the lives of APC members in ONELGA are again on the firing line of Rivers politics. Basic human dignity, respect for the rights of others and the basic acknowledgment of the sanctity of human life is being assaulted in the name of political supremacy.

“I condemn this primitive recourse to violence with it every breath of my being and I urge every Rivers man and woman and indeed all right-thinking citizens of our country to raise their voices and be heard,” it added.

The statement further stated that any well-meaning member of the APC in Rivers State who is focused on how the party can dislodge the opposition in the State and reclaim the State Government to improve not just the fortunes of our members but maximize opportunities for all Rivers men and women should have been overwhelmed with joy to see Rivers people troop out to mobilize themselves in active preparation to register and revalidate their membership of the APC.

“It is surprising that while we never mobilized to attack and maim those who killed our party members we can mobilize and arm youths to kill those who want to revalidate their membership of our party and those who want to join our party.

“It is clear that destroying Senator Abe and his supporters has become more important to some in the Rivers APC leadership than repositioning our party and preparing the party for victory.

“Let me remind us all that the registration and revalidation exercise is not a contest for any individual rather it is a clarion call to all of us to expand the party and improve it. We cannot do that by killing those who are interested in being part of our party.
Politics is a game of numbers and every single Rivers man and woman is important if we genuinely desire victory.

“Let me once again appeal to the law enforcement agents in the State to protect all law-abiding Rivers men and women and bring the perpetrators and sponsors of political violence and thuggery to book. The last time it was Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area and Asari Toru, etc. While our own children are safe in the comfort of expensive private universities in foreign countries the children of those we lead are encouraged to attack and kill one another.

“So far it is to the glory of God that not one member of our party has been killed by another member of this party, if we do not discourage violence we may end up spilling human blood and then our story could change for the worse.

“Once again, I appeal to all members of our great party in Rivers State to denounce violence. Do not be provoked to attack anyone, particularly your own brothers and sisters in the same party to please any individual. What we have in the party is a political disagreement, it is not a land dispute or a communal riot in which there is no meeting point.

“Members should remain calm and encourage all those who have not revalidated their membership or want to join the winning train of the APC to do so.

“I plead with all members and leaders of our great party to give peace a chance. A united, organized and galvanized APC will make greater impact in Rivers politics than a violent, hateful mob. We should all join hands to encourage Rivers people to join our party so that together we can be stronger.

Again, I urge our law enforcement officers not to give the impression that certain persons are above the law. All those behind the Omoku attack must be apprehended and brought to book. If we continue to fail in this responsibility we encourage others to follow a similar path. The end result will be anarchy and a breakdown of law order. That is not the legacy of the APC,” the statement added.

Sen. Magnus Abe warns Nigeria on dangers of delay in PIB passage

A former senator and chieftain of All Progressives Congress, Magnus Abe has warned Nigeria on the dangers of further delay in the passage of Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) in Nigeria.

Abe who leaned on the opening remarks ( READ HERE: #TNGPIBConfab: Nigeria cannot waste anymore time in enacting PIB law – Bayagbon ) of TNG’s Publisher/Chief Host Mideno Bayabgon at a one-day colloquium on PIB said Nigeria may suffer without quick enactment of PIB as the world is set to move away from petroleum.

The Stone Age didn’t end because we ran out of stones; the Age of Steaming did not end because world ran out of coals, it ended because the world moved to something else. Today the world is set to move away from petroleum, whatever we are doing now is of a limited plan.

He urged the Nigerian government to draft a development plan that will channel the new wealth created from revamping petroleum sector into infrastructural projects that will provide a new future for Nigeria

If we continue to spend on our recurrent expenditures, both the host communities and Nigeria will continue to wallow in poverty

His words: “We are happy that after so many years of speculations and wrong turns, the PIB may finally see the light of the day. But like every other law, the PIB is not a silver-bullet that will solve all Nigeria’s problem or that of the country’s oil and gas industry. The will still be challenges down the roads but one major challenge is the integrity of implementing the laws, if those who are to interpret and enforce the law are not sincere at the end of the day we will be back where we started from, no matter how good our laws maybe.

“I will like us to recall how a foreign company attempted to steal money from Nigeria using Nigerians laws and institutions. The Nigerian government hired a lawyer but the lawyer chose to represent the interest of the foreign company. This lawyer in question started funneling monies from the foreign companies to our national representatives in Nigeria just to distort the narrative in favour of the foreigners, so they could steal our money; PIB could suffer the same thing if we don’t take care of things we call ‘Nigeria factor

“The second thing I will like to discuss about is the issue of host communities. For me, I will agree with those who say we should concentrate on getting host communities 10% derivation funds from total production, as against operating costs; getting the dues from total production offers the people of Niger Delta more opportunities

Speaking as a Nigerian, we have been producing oil since it was discovered in Oloibiri in Bayelsa, everybody knows Nigeria has made billions, trillions of dollars in Nigeria but today, we are the capital of poverty in Nigeria. As we discuss the PIB today we are pressing the reset button to give Nigeria a new lease of life in the oil industry, we are running against time, In California and all across Europe they are already passing laws to limit filling stations as a direct measure to curb the dangers of hydrocarbon in their territory. The petroleum days is coming to an end.

The Stone Age didn’t end because we ran out of stones; the Age of Steaming did not end because world ran out of coals, it ended because the world moved to something else. Today the world is set to move away from petroleum, whatever we are doing now is of a limited plan. We must make use of this second chance to create new opportunities for our country, we need a development plan that will channel the new wealth created from revamping petroleum sector into infrastructural projects that will will provide a new future for Nigeria; but if we continue to spend on our recurrent expenditures, both the host communities and Nigeria will continue to wallow in poverty.
