“Magu is currently occupying a residence rented for N40m at N20m per annum. This accommodation was not paid [for] from the commission’s finances, but by one Umar Mohammed, air commodore retired, a questionable businessman who has subsequently been arrested by the secret service.

“Investigations show that the acting EFCC chairman regularly embarked on official and private trips through a private jet owned by Mohammed.

“In one of such trips, Magu flew to Maiduguri alongside Mohammed with a bank MD who was being investigated by the EFCC over complicity in funds allegedly stolen by the immediate past petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

“Furthermore, the EFCC boss has so far maintained a high-profile lifestyle. This is exemplified by his preference for first-class air travels. On 24 June, 2016, he flew Emirate airlines first-class to Saudi Arabia to perform lesser hajj at the cost of N2.9m. This is in spite of Mr President’s directive to all public servants to fly economy class.

“Magu has fostered a beneficial relationship with Mohammed who by his confession approaches clients for possible exploitation, favours and associated returns,” the DSS report said.

Magu is yet to be confirmed as the substantive chairman of the EFCC despite occupying the position in acting capacity for many years.

  • Malami’s attack on Magu is a condemnation of Buhari’s anti-corruption war – Northern group

Malami’s attack on Magu is a condemnation of Buhari’s anti-corruption war – Northern group

Northern group, Kanuri Collective Agenda (KCA), has condemned the attempt by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami to drag the reputation of the acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu in the mud.

According to media reports, Malami had written President Muhammadu Buhari recommending the sack of Magu based on several grounds “raging from diversion of recovered loot to insubordination and misconduct.”

The justice minister also accused the EFCC boss of disclosing a total naira recovery of N504 billion amid claims by a close associate of the EFCC boss that he actually lodged N543 billion in the Recovery Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), exceeding the disclosed figures by N39 billion.

Reacting to the allegation, KCA, in a statement by its spokesman, Malam Waziri Ibrahim, said Malami had made a mockery of Buhari’s anti-corruption war and exposed his administration to ridicule.

The group urged Buhari to relieve Malami of his job before he wrecked more damage to the administration’s fight against graft.

KCA quoted the PDP as saying that it was the worst national embarrassment in the history of Nigeria, for the head of an anti-corruption agency in an administration that prides itself on zero tolerance for corruption, “being dragged on allegation of diversion of recovered funds and fraudulent sale of assets seized by the agency.”

“By making such weighty allegation against Magu, the justice minister has only succeeded in telling the opposition and the international community that Buhari’s anti-corruption war is a farce because the champion of the anti-graft war is corruption-personified.The allegation also implies that Mr. President is running a very corrupt administration. Magu’s anti-corruption war has earned national and international accolades for this administration, which Malami has rubbished with his memo to Mr. President.”

  • Malami’s memo exposed corruption in Buhari’s govt, Magu’s EFCC -PDP

Malami’s memo exposed corruption in Buhari’s govt, Magu’s EFCC -PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has said the memo written to President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, recommending the sack of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, over financial impropriety has further exposed the Buhari’-led govt.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbodiyan, in a statement in Abuja, on Friday, said, Malami’s memo has exposed the regime’s “abysmal corruption, deception, and hypocrisy.”

The party said “the scandal is the worst national embarrassment in the history of Nigeria”.

Ologbodiyan noted that “there is nothing more embarrassing than the head of the anti-corruption agency in an administration that prides itself as having zero tolerance for corruption, is being dragged on allegation of diversion of recovered funds and fraudulent sale of assets seized by the agency”.

He said, “Malami’s memo has also exposed the credentials of President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption architecture, rubbished his standing as Africa Union Anti-Corruption Champion and shattered our national integrity in the international arena.

“The world can now see that the much-hyped anti-corruption fight of the Buhari administration, has been nothing but a huge fraud and a racket by certain persons in the APC administration to harass political opponents, intimidate and extort money from innocent Nigerians and steal public funds.

“Nigerians and the world have further seen why corruption has worsened under the Buhari administration, as copiously documented by a credible international organisation, including the Transparency International.”

  • Malami plots to sack EFCC’s Magu, in damning memo to Buhari

Malami plots to sack EFCC’s Magu, in damning memo to Buhari

Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, has recommended to President Muhammadu Buhari the sacking of Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Malami, in a memorandum to the president, anchored his recommendation on several grounds “ranging from diversion of recovered loot to insubordination and misconduct” by Magu.

According to a ThisDay report Malami included in the memo, a short list of three candidates for consideration to replace Magu.

The report also claimed that Malami made 22 weighty allegations against Magu.

Malami alleged accounting gaps or discrepancies of figures concerning the recovered assets, claiming that Magu was not transparent enough in the management of recovered assets.

But Magu is fighting back and his supporters within the Presidency said ” removing Magu at this time when he has given muscle to Buhari’s anti-corruption fight would be a mistake.”

“It is painful that the EFCC boss is facing certain powerful forces who have decided to remove him in spite of his remarkable achievements,” sources stated.

A Magu supporter said:” It will interest you to note that Malami accused the EFCC boss of disclosing a total naira recovery of N504 billion but lodged N543 billion in the Recovery Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“Incidentally, this exceeded the disclosed figures by N39 billion.”

According to the supporter of the EFCC boss, what should be a point of commendation is now being used against Magu.

Magu has been acting chairman of the EFCC since 9 November, 2015.

He twice failed to scale through Senate confirmation during the Saraki 8th Assembly.

  • Corrupt ex-public officials donating millions to remove Magu from office – Party Chairman

The National Chairman of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, has alleged plots by some political interests to ensure the removal of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu, from office.

Nwanyanwu, who addressed reporters yesterday in Abuja, accused some former governors and others, who are being investigated for corruption by the EFCC as the brains behinds the alleged plot.

He said: “Intelligence has reached us that there is an attempt and, in fact, they have gone on to actualise this attempt by putting together hundreds of millions of naira.

“These are former office holders in the country with those that are facing trial. This huge sum of money they have put together is to be used to influence government functionaries and those very close to the President.

“Their plot is to ensure that the one who has been driving this anti-corruption fight, in the person of Ibrahim Mustapha Magu, would be removed as quickly as possible.

“Some of them are facing trial; some of them would have their trials commenced very soon. But they don’t want it to happen. That has led them into putting heads together and putting funds together, which they use in lobbying.”

  • EFCC defends Magu over $300m Abacha loot allegation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has referred as baseless allegation against its acting Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu, by a U.S. senator, Charles Grassley, over 300 million dollars ‘Abacha loot’.

The 86-year-old U.S.Republican Senator had on April 1, addressed a letter to the Chief Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section of the U.S.Department of Justice, Deborah Connor.

He accused Magu of wrongly and maliciously detaining individuals, who spoke against the government.

Spokesperson for the EFCC, Mr Tony Orilade, in a statement on Friday, however, decried the allegation, affirming that the Commission spearheaded transparent management of looted funds.

Orilade said that the EFCC was at the forefront of the transparent management of recovered funds and would not be dragged into any controversy over an allegation that has no fact or any iota of proof.

“”The allegation clearly has no bearing with the operations of the EFCC nor address the painstaking efforts of Magu in tackling the menace of corruption, without fear or favour

““The EFCC is involved in the processes of repatriation of the looted $300million by the former Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.

““The Commission is aware of the tripartite agreement involving Nigeria with the United States and Island of Jersey.

“”As an anti-graft agency, the Commission has credible records of managing recovered funds and assets.

“It is rather unfortunate that the ranking US Senator, in a desperate bid to frustrate the repatriation of the funds, embraced the well-worn antics of some unscrupulous elements in the country.

“Those who had never succeeded in blackmailing the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“”Even the harshest detractors of Magu know and always acknowledge his firm and bold handling of the anti- corruption fight, which continues to earn him accolades within and outside Nigeria, ” he said.

Orilade pointed out that the U.S.Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently gave an Award of Excellence to Magu for his unique role in a joint field operation codenamed, ‘Operation Rewired’.

He stated that the operation yielded great results, internationally; in tackling the menace of cyber-crime.

“”Besides, only recently, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke (SAN), and a member of the opposition, poured encomiums on Magu on the visible achievements of the EFCC under his watch.

“Orilade quoted Adoke as saying: “President Muhammadu Buhari is highly celebrated for fighting corruption and the poster boy of this celebrated achievement is clearly Magu.”

Orilade said that Grassley evidently lacked any sound basis for linking the EFCC and Magu with any oppressive or separatist agenda against government opposition.

He noted that records of convictions of the Commission were in public domain as well as cases before the courts, which can be subjected to un-biased analysis and scrutiny.

“”We wish to reiterate that the EFCC under Magu is too focused on the anti-graft agenda of the government to be distracted by such empty claims of the lawmaker.

“”Grassley and his sponsors are clearly on quicksand on this issue.

““The Commission remains focused on its mandate against economic and financial crimes and will not be deterred by spurious allegations from individuals with hidden agenda,” Orilade said.

  • Nothing wrong in raiding ‘Yahoo Boys’ at Nightclubs – Magu

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has come out to defend the raids on nightclubs in the country, insisting that there is nothing wrong in it.

The anti-graft agency recently stormed a nightclub in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital and arrested 89 suspected internet fraudsters, known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo boys’.

Mr Magu said the move is important because that’s where internet fraudsters gather and spend the money gotten from their victims.

“If it is nightclubs, these are the places the yahoo boys gather and spend the money. There is nothing wrong in raiding the yahoo boys at nightclubs.”

The EFCC boss who was in Ibadan to inspect the new recruits of the commission at the state zonal office on Wednesday, stressed that the raid on the nightclubs is based on credible intelligence gathered.

“It is not about nightclub, raiding of nightclub is left to the police, we don’t have much power, and we will go there when we are sure it is the fraudsters.

“We are not raiding nightclub, we are going after the yahoo yahoo boys and we always do that when we have a credible intelligence.”

He added that the fraudsters are small boys and need the support of everybody to rehabilitate them.

“What we will do is that we have to collaborate to rehabilitate them into the society. These are small boys who are intelligent, they can be useful.

“There are a lot of fraudsters who have made millions, we can find a way to bring them back so they can be better citizens tomorrow,” he said.

  • Magu vows to secure Diezani’s extradition

The Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has vowed that a former minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke will be extradited before the end of the year to face corruption charges.

He also accused the anti-graft agencies, international partners, especially in the United Kingdom of giving what he described as undue protection to the former minister.

Magu spoke on Wednesday during an official visit to the Ibadan Zonal Office of the commission where he was received by the Zonal Head, Mr Friday Ebelo accompanied by other top officials.

He added that the agency is already changing its tactics and strategy of engaging foreign partners to ensure the extradiction of the former minister of petroleum is secured soon.

Fielding questions from reporters after a tour of the facilities at the Zonal office, Magu expressed sadness at the slow pace of investigation by the foreign partners, especially those involved with the former ministers of petroleum case, saying they could have released her to come and face charges at home having found enough evidences against her in Nigeria.

Noting that the whistle-blower policy is still active and yielding results, the anti-graft agency boss enjoined Nigerians both with and outside the country to collaborate with the agency by providing needed information that can aid nabbing corrupt individuals in the country.

He also added that the agency is readier for the concluding elections by fighting vote buying in affected parts of the country, urging the people not to go to the voting areas with huge amount of monies so as not to fall victim of been arrested for vote buying.

He said, “I want to thank all of you (media) for been partners and for helping us by collaborating with us in doing what we are doing, we are a very essential partner, the edits is very important. In fact, you people are the anti-corruption crusaders because your choice of profession is a desire for you to insist on doing the right thing for people, to fight against injustice to fellow human beings. That is an important aspect that has helped us to this level. We are here and we are doing very well.

“And we are doing everything possible. This year, we are going to upgrade everything we are doing. Rerun elections and all outstanding elections are to be concluded, we are part of it and we are going to fight against vote buying. Everybody is on our radar, so I want you to join us on that day so that we can expose the vote buyers and collect their money.

“And if you are going there, make sure you don’t carry more than maybe N25, 000, otherwise, they will arrest everybody that carries unusual amount of money on their body. So, we are going on with the fight against vote buying during next Saturday’s elections in the affected states across the nation.”

On collaborative efforts with international partners to bring back suspected looters of national treasury finding solace in other climes, Magu said “we are collaborating with everybody including the Nigerians in diaspora, those who lives outside the country, we are collecting a whole lot of information and that is our strength in getting them.

“We also want to collaborate Nigerians within Nigeria and in Nigeria so that they will give us more information to exposed the looters so that they can return the loot. Wwill insist on them returning the loot. One thing is that, the whistleblower policy is still active and still working, the only thing is that, it is been slowed down because you have to go to the courts and exhaust all the court processes, the court will have to declare the amount that is recovered as loot and forfeited to the federal government, then we will give you your share as the whistle-blower. So, we are relying on you (media) in particular to expose them so that we can go after them.

Speaking on the agencies relationship with foreign partners including FBI, Interpol and others, the EFCC boss said, “we have a cordial relationship with the FBI, NCA, with the law enforcement agencies in Italy, Switzerland and in almost all the countries, in UAE, Abu Dhabi, you have seen that we have been able to procure the extradition of the former Attorney General and most likely they will arraign him today (Wednesday) in Abuja.”

Harping on the commissions effort on the return of Diezani, the Acting Chairman insisted “They will bring her back to the country this year. We must get her. They have no reason to keep her there. Why should you keep her without taking her to court. And this is the fifth year and why should you be investigating a matter for five years and its a matter that is straightforward, a financial crime investigation, it is not a murder case that should linger, but financial crimes.

“The case is straightforward. If you don’t have any evidence or sufficient evidences to establish any offence, bring her back, we have more than enough evidences to take her to court, so we are working and we will continue to work.”

When asked if he suspects sabotage from the international partners, Magu said “Yes, definitely. I don’t know why they are protecting her. Let them release her and let her come back to Nigeria.

“They are giving her protection, for whatever reason and they are yet to disclose whatever offence she has committed, they are only relying on the evidences that we have recovered. So, they are not serious people but they are our partners and we work together. They are helping us and we help them too, it’s a two way relationship, just like we are collaborating with you people (media), you abuse us sometimes and at other times you speak well of us.

“Yes, we are and we have already started another strategy because you would have never heard me talking like this against them openly before you (journalists), so, its a new strategy and I don’t have to disclose the rest of the strategies.”

  • EFCC will extradite 18 high profiled looters soon -Magu

Not less than 18 high profiled looters in different parts of the world will be extradited soon, Acting Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Ibrahim Magu, stated on Tuesday.

He told reporters in Ilorin, capital of Kwara: “The request of President Muhammadu Buhari in London for the extradition of alleged looters is just the beginning of the fight against corruption in Nigeria. We are going to extradite more Nigerians to come and face trial in Nigeria.

“We will bring back all the looters who are hiding outside this country. The fight against corruption has just started I am telling you. It will be renewed this year. It is going to be vigorous.”

Magu described the insinuation that the EFCC is established Kwara purposely to deal with former Senator Bukola Saraki as unfair.

“Kwara is one of the oldest states in the country. It deserves the

headquarters of the EFCC. There was a time there were 12 states in Nigeria and Ilorin was a state capital of Kwara.

“You should be protesting why EFCC was not brought here earlier. Not because of an individual, far from that,” he added.

Speaking on his non confirmation as the substantive EFCC chair, Magu said: “I feel great. I am not worried. It is Gods that appoints and does otherwise. If God says you are holding a position, whether you are confirmed or unconfirmed when it is your time to leave you will leave. I believe very much in that.”
