Manchester United are in the Europa League semi-finals after Harry Maguire’s late goal secured them a dramatic 5-4 win against Lyon in extra-time.

Manuel Ugarte and Diego Dalot gave United a 2-0 lead in the first half.

But the French side roared back with Nicolás Tagliafico and Corentin Tolisso to claim a 2-2 draw, the same scoreline from the first leg, and force extra-time.

Lyon started extra-time with 10 men after Tolisso was sent off in the 89th, but still managed to turn the game around through Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette.

United, however, didn’t give up. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the spot and Kobbie Mainoo levelled the score – just a minute before Maguire’s header completed the fantastic victory.

The Premier League side will now face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals.

In Rome, Europa League sensation Bodø/Glimt claimed a 3-2 win on penalties to oust Lazio and set up a semi-final tie against Tottenham.

Maguire: Gareth Southgate slams English pundits

England coach Gareth Southgate hit out a Harry Maguire’s critics after victory in Scotland last night.

The Manchester United defender put through his own net in the 3-1 win.

Southgate later said: “From a Scotland fan’s point of view, I get it and I have absolutely no complaints, but it is a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly.

“I think our fans recognised that ‘OK there might be a bit of heat from our supporters, but we’re not going to have others getting into him’. But it is a joke. I have never known a player to be treated the way he is – not from the Scottish fans but by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is.

“They have created something that is beyond anything I have ever seen. He has been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful England team in decades and he’s been a key part of that.

“I’ve talked about the importance of our senior players and every time he goes on the field the resilience he shows, the balls he shows is absolutely incredible. He’s a top player and we’re all with him and our fans were incredible with him tonight.”

Fringe players key for victory over Fulham – Maguire

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire believes his side put in a positive display on the last day of the Premier League season.

A slightly rotated Red Devils side saw Maguire get a rare start this term, as Fulham took an early initiative in the game.

However, United rallied after a David De Gea penalty save to score twice through Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes to win the game and secure third spot in the league.

“We have a lot of competition for places and that’s what a big club needs – strength in depth,” Maguire told MUTV at full-time.

“I think you’ve seen today, after the first 20 minutes it was a really positive performance from the lads who stepped in, the lads who haven’t played as much.

“I think the manager and his staff can rely upon us, they know they can make changes and we can do the job.

“It’s good to be a part of the squad and if we’re going to be successful this season, next season, and seasons after that, we’re going to need a big squad.”

He told the Full Circle podcast, “If I was Maguire, looking at him and how it’s working out for him, or how it’s going this season, I would have said [he should leave], and I think that’s best for him as well because he needs to play.

He explained, “He has performed better for England than he has for United — I think he would agree — and over the last couple of years United have struggled.

“With England, he has always had that protection.”
